Unlock the truth, Thyself the key; Unseal the sacred book.” “Secondly,” said the preacher, “their Pentecostal experience was, however, not only the fulfilment of ancient promised, it afforded a convincing demonstration of the Victory of Jesus Christ their Lord.Never more could these men and women doubt or question the Divine Authority of Jesus.Peter's testimony that day gave expression to the faith unswerving held by all the apostolic band—'Let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ve have crucified, both Lord and Christ.’ ‘There had been occasions both during His ministry in Galilee and still more during the dark hours of betrayal and crucifixion when they doubted end feared.and even in the glow of the Resurrection Day we are told of uncertainty in their hearts, but now, being themselves the recipients of the outpoured Spirit as the first fruits of the exaltation of their Lord.they proclaim their faith in Him and in the perfection of His finished work, with certainty and unshakable conviction. The New Way “Now, the resurrection was for them a glorious fact beyond the shadow of a doubt, ‘This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses." All that He had claimed to be.‘The Way, The Truth, The Lifé'; the new and living way by which the wondering sons of men might come back to the Father Heart of God, they were ready to proclaim with confidence and power.“O Hoiy Spirit, comforter, Thou promised guide divine; On all the Journey of our life Command Thy light to shine; So shall we never stray From ways our Master trod, So shall our pathway lead To rest, to home and God.” “Thirdly,” continued Dr.Jones."the Pentecostal experience, however, meant for them much more than the fulfilment of a promise or even a convincing demonstration of their Master's Victory. It meant the creation of the church as a Living Fellowship of (See NOT NEW on Page 7) Five Years ‘Apart Brothers Now Fly in Same Squadron Dave and Bob Sproule Meet Overseas and Work in Flying Boats Work.plus a keen desire to see the world.separated Bob Sproule, son of Mr.and Mrs.Gordon Sproule, 39 Thornhill avenue, from bis young brother Dave, for the better part of five years, but they're together again.overseas, now on the same flying boat equadron, While Pilot-Officer Dave Sproule flies the boats.Flying Officer R.S.Sproule is the engineer officer of the squadron.Bob has been with the unit some time.Dave is a comparatively new arrival, It has been a crowded five rears since Bob Sproule stepped out of McGHI University in the tpring of '37 with an engineering degree, and a very strong desire ta “look around a bit.” Montreal was a good springboard to set him on his way, and he arranged à working-passage overseas for himself. He saw a lot of England.travelling extensively.later shipped to West Africa, by way of variation. Then he spent a year in France.Had he not been a bit of an opportunist, might well be there, or in a German concentration camp, now. While in France, Sproule obtained an engineering job in the immense Renault Works outside Paris. There he remained while war was in progress, and there he remained also when the Germans broke through. He was still there on the day the Germans swept in an Paris, but he felt it was time to go, and went in a hurry. Those days of getting out of France.when roads were crowded.and all was confusion, were quite an experience.ningly lamented.“It was really something, with three speeds.and all sorts of gadgets. They didn’t give us much time to get moving.” Sproule subsequently returned to Canada, worked with a construction firm for a short time, and then enrolled in the R.C.A.F.He was posted to the School of of being groomed for his present important job.During Bob Sproule; Where Westmount Reads Popularity of Library Continues Despite War Young and Old, Rich and Poor, Take Advantage Of City’s Real “Community Centre” The following article on the work of the Public Library is the third of a series written with a view to showing residents something of the work done on their behalf by their city. The information is taken di- recily from the City Manager's last annual report.Further articles of this nature will appear from time to time.“Time is money''—and quite a number of residents have found this to be the case when they forget to return their books to the Public Library. In last year's report of the work reference has been made to the great amount of time spent in tracing ‘'‘delinquent borrowers’, and the total amount received in fines at two cents a day was as much as $1,239.17, The report slightly exuses the existence of such a total by stating that the sending out of overdue notices was purposely ‘‘delayed several days’ in order to “save postage’, but there is no doubt that a change of heart — and of action—on the part of el- tizens with regard to their attitude to one of their greatest civic asseis, would save their own money and the valuable time of the library staff. The influence of war conditions is apparent throughout the report.Although there was an increase in circulation in 1942 it was so low in comparison with that of 1941, the Librarian remarked “there are definite indications of a decreased circulation in the near future”.Some of the causes of this situation were attributed to ‘‘enlistments”, ‘reduction in the leisure of housewives and young girls because of the shortage of domestic help” and the gas rationing has apparently held up the regular visits of many who live at some distance from the Library. And yet—it is stated that “the library continues to reach a large proportion of the citizens of West- mount, for the number registered with us i8 only slightly less than in past years.” Types of Popular Reading Many books ‘’dealing with postwar thoughts and problems” were taken home for careful reading.Stories of the Canadian scene — especially when laid locally —— still absorbed the attention of the readers, and ‘a surprising number of biographies, lives of men and women, ancient and modern, — also a good deal of history’ was in favour last year.Drama, music, art and poetry, designated by the report as ‘peacetime subjects” were shown to he ag popular as ever.Great care was evidently taken wtih regard to the purchase of the three thousand and seventy- seven new books.High Price of Books The number, by the by, was actually a drop in purchase from that of 1941 owing to the high cost of hooks.‘Much of our popular fiction” it is stated ‘’was bought in the form of re-print editions’.Although a number of books dealing with the war were acquired, it was recognized that they would be of “ephemeral value” and all efforts went towards buying outstanding books having ‘‘no hearing on current events hut with a Aeronautical Engineering.by way ! evening seems ill-con- sidered and an unnecessary hardship both on the druggists and the residents of West- mount. The law will fall particularly heavily on the druggists, for, at a pinch, the residents can buy from stores without the city’s limits —where there is no early closing law—and have their purchases delivered right to their doors. In effect the law would simply transfer trade from Westmount druggists to those outside the city's jurisdiction. There are other considerations. There are frequent cases of sickness not serious enough for the doctor, yet which call for medicine from the druggist—muscular aches and pains, toothaches, headaches, and the frequent and many ills af childhood. Then there is the husy war worker who has forgotten his razor blades. There are nther cases of such small emergencies too numerous tn mention, Most difficult tn understand of all the angles of this proposal is the fact that the drug stores may keep their restaurants and soda fountains open while heing compelled to close [the drug counter.Why?‘.HELP THE GREEKS INCE THE BEGINNING of the war local residents have been asked to support a greatly extended number of patriotic and charitable campaigns. We have met our responsibility in each case in a manner befitting our reputation nf never failing in a worthy cause. We are now asked to support generously still another appeal—the Greek war relief fund. The plight of the Greeks is known to us all.The bravery of the Greeks in opposing aggression is alsn known well to us all.Against hopeless odds, they went unhesitatingly to war when many other nations just quit before Fascist might. We owe them a debf we can’t repay, now, when they are dying by the hundreds—dying for be interested in the services, tn be held Sunday, commemorating the valiant fight and the sacrifices of our gallant ally, Russia. There will be a service on Sunday afternoon, on Fletcher's Field.while in the evening the active head of the Russian Orthodox Churches for North America, the Metropolitan Benjamin, will speak in Calvary United Church on “Religion in Soviet Russia”.This latter service will be conducted by Captain the Reverend T.W.Jones, who will Le assisted by Dr.R.G.Kat- sunoff, pastor of the Church of All Nations. These services will Le interesting to native Canadians not only because they will help cement relations between our people and those of Russia, but because of the presence at both services of many “new Canadians” representing many nations now at war together against Fascism.Such meetings as these also help clear the way for better understanding in the post-war world, OUR NEW TERMINAL HE OPENING OF THE new Canadian National Railways terminal will be wel- comer by all Montrealers, for the old Bonaventure station was not only inadequate for the traffic it was called upon to handle, but from a purely Montreal standpoint it had become an eyesore and not at all in keeping with what the world expects of the terminal of the world's greatest railway system in Canada's largest city. The new terminal, one of the finest, and the must modern in the world, is more in character.Old Bonaventure station these days .reminds one of what bargain dav at an Indian Bazaar must have been like in pre-war years.huge job it is doing that regulation of the hundreds of people milling about at train time is impossible.Men from all the armed services by the score; civilians—fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sweethearts, relatives and friends; trains of baggage trucks laboriously making their way through the crowds; officials, train crews, youngsters, newsboys. That business moves on time is a tribute to the patience and efficiency of the railway's employ- ces.The new terminal, which has been described in print frequently since its preview by newspapermen, is opening in time to contribute substantially to the solution of the nation's wartime transportation problems. When peace comes again, it will have extended greatly the distances Montrealers can live from the heart of the city and still get in and out conveniently, It will add millions to the value of real estate within commuting distance of the city. The indirect or unseen values of a project like this new termingl are far greater than the apparent advantages, great as they might be.Montreal welcomes the new station as a civic asset as well as a means of increasing the ef- give generously to alleviate their suffering.Book Review Howard $.Ross | "Chicken Every
