Sunday last by the Rev.Sydenham B.Lindsay at the Advent.In opening, the Rector quoted from 1st Timothy, Verse 17, “God Giveth Us Richly All Things To Enjoy.” Following is the text: s “There is an unusual word in the Epiphany collect, — the word “fruition’’.In this collect we pray that we may have ‘the fruition of Thy Glorious Godhead.” Now this is an unusual thought.We know that fruition is the same as enjoyment, and it is an unusual thought for us to ask God that we may enjoy Him, We hear a great deal about loving God, about serving: Him, about worshipping Him; but the idea of enjoying God does not re- Lodge A.F.and A.M.ceive the same emphasis, But Rev.Sydenham Lindsay Preaches Of Religion here it is in the Epiphany collect — “the enjoyment, the fruition, of Thy glorious Godhead.” The same thought is expressed in the Presbyterian catechism, which says: “The chief end of man Is to glorify God, and enjoy Him for ever.” Now while this thought may be unusual, it is a very natural and normal attitude for us to have.Nothing indeed should be more nafural, in our fellowship with God, than that we should enjoy Him.I was struck with one remark, that was made about our Carol Service at Christmas; one person said: ‘‘’The boys, as they took their part, seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.” I am sure they did, as we all did: and it is what we should feel with regard to every aspect of our religion, There is a phrase, which oc- (See REV.SYDENHAM, Page 2) Dr.A.E.Cliffe At Westmount Rotary Robert Burns delivered a most interesting lecture before the Solar Club of Montreal at a | meeting held in the Griffith Memorial Hall of the Homoeopathic Hospital on Thursday evening last.Inspired by the celebration of ‘Burns’ Day” on the 25th, Mr.McBroom soon impressed his audience with a profound knowledge of the imyortant events in the life of the Scottish bard, and with brilliant interpretations of many favorite poems written by Burns whom he described as the greatest poet of all time.Some false impressions of this great man were corrected by the speaker, two of the most commbn of which were his weakness for drink and his poverty.It had been proved, the speaker emphasized, that Burns was greatly handicapped in the art of drink- (See SOLAR CLUB on Page 8) Children’s Librarian Urges School: Libraries The need for central libraries in the Montreal schools was stressed last week by Miss Gwendoline McEwen, children’s librar- fan at the Westmount Public Library.She was speaking at the St.Laurent Home and School Association meeting held in the school.She pointed out that the reading ability of children in the same grade varied greatly, and that it was a mistake to confine them to their text-books and supplementary readers, | Miss McEwen advocated setting up libraries in the schools where children could choose thelr literature according to their reading ability and at the same time round out their education.I « ER c E AST ress + np ry.amr © Te ESA AT IE EE EE MT NE SE EE ” PR tres mr rm = PAGE TWO THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, the founding of Calvary Church was observed at special services held in the Church, Dorchester St.at Greene Avenue, Westmount, on Sunday last with the Minister, Capt.the Rev.T.W.Jones, M.A., D.D., preaching both morning and evening.The Sunday School, which preceded the formation of the Church, celebrated its 856th Anniversary on Sunday; while the Young People’s Society eelebrat- ed its 61st anniversary on Monday, January 24th.The annual business meeting of the congregatiin was held on Wednesday, January 26th, which date is actually the birthday of the church, for it was on January 26th, 1877, that the church was formally organized.Following a devotional service conducted by the pastor, Rev.T.W.Jones, the secretarial report of the year’s work was presented by A.S.Keiller, A.C.I.S., secretary of the church.The statistical section showed a net gain during the year of 42 members, the membership now standing at 637 Resident, 44 non-resident and 74 members on active service.Reports from all departments of the life and work of the congregation were presented.These revealed much activity, earnest Iabour, and sincere devotion to the cause of Jesus Christ and humanity through this branch of His Church.While Sunday School and Young People’ work is being maintained under increasing difficulties, the spirit of optimism was sounded in the reports of the school and the Y.P.Union.Women's work was reported in the story of the W.M.S., in the work of the women’s association, and in the report of the Red Cross Unit.The music commlttee reported the department reported a most successful year's work in support of the Minesweepers Auxillary service.The church treasurer's report presented by T.Haugland, showed that $11.000 was raised for the local “work of the congregation; while the missionary and benevolent funds report of A.Modler, the treasurer of this department, showed a total of $2,430 raised for these purposes.The trustees and canvass committee reported through the secretary of the trustee board, which showed a very encouraging outlook for the year 1944.The W.M.S.reported an income of $627, while the W.A, raised a total of $1,690.- It was reported that constant communication is being maintained between the men and women of the congregation on active service and the groups to which they belonged, as well as by the Women's Association sending parcels to those overseas.Officers for the year 1944 include : Chairman of the Church Board, F.N, Stephen; Secretary, A.S.Keiller; Treasurer, T.Haugland; Missionary and sabbaths” (2 Chronicles xxxvi 21).Strangely enough, it does not speak of the people enjoying their sabbaths, just the land, And yet it 18 evident, in reading the Old Testament, that people did enjoy their sabbaths.But coming down to fairly recent times, it is noticeable, that people did not have the idea of enjoying sabbaths, or enjoying Sundays, That was about the last thought they Barrister and Solicitor Telephone "HOWARD S.ROSS, K.C.57 St.James St.West HA.9238 connected with Sunday, Sunday was a strict day, a solemn day, a day full of prohibitions, Now what, after all, is the right Christian attitude about Sunday?First of all, it should be the happiest day in the week: we shoulda enjoy it thoroughly.And it must be obvious, that if we are sincere Christians, we shall not experience the fullest enjoyment if we put Jesus Christ on one side, Jesus Christ must be the centre of it, or there will be something radically wrong.Therefore in keeping Sunday, and in seeking to enjoy Sunday, it is an elementary and essential thing to settle, that He will occupy His rightful place.The ,Church guides us, quite simply and quite definitely, as to what we should do, The Church says: Sunday is the Lord’s Day; therefore be sure and come to the Lord's House, your parish church, and let us all take part in the Lord’s Service, the Holy Eucharist; on some Sundays let us get up early, and receive the Lord’s.Food, the Blessed Sacrament.Now that is all very simple and very reasonable, and as those who love our Lord Jesus Christ, we shall enjoy doing it.A more difficult question arises when people ask whether it is all right to do certain things on Sundays.It is fairly obvious what we should do about our worship, But when it comes to recreation, and other things, we want a sound principle to guide us, Here is the best principle I can think of: Sunday is not only a day of worship, it is also a holiday: we are to put aside our work and enjoy ourselves.But in enjoying ourselves, we should make sure, absolutely sure, that we are not giving extra work to other people, Other people, besides you and me, have the same right to a holiday on Sundays; and, therefore, if we do anything that makes unnecessary work for them we are spoiling their holiday, and that is plain selfishness.None of us will really enjoy our Sundays, if we are conscious of causing our fellow men to do any work, which can be avoided.With regard to fruition or enjoyment, it is clear that some people finq it easier to enjoy things than others; that is to say, some people have the faculty of enjoyment.I heard it said of one man, that he had a strong sense of duty, and that he did his duty faithfully and well, but that he never seemed to derive Any pleasure from it.That was unfortunate: this man was lacking in the faculty of enjoyment.Now if we are lacking in this or in any other gift, we should seek to acquire it and cultivate it.God will certainly help us.One purpose of prayer is to ask from God those things which we lack; we need never say that we were born without certain gifts .or graces, and so we have to go on for ever doing without them.We can acquire what we lack: even if we cannot get them in as large measure as some other people, we can get them in some measure, and in measure sufficient to round off our Christian characters, Therefore with regard to fruition, enjoyment, we should enjoy our religion, we should enjoy our work, we should enjoy our relaxation.If it does not come naturally to any of us to enjoy these things, then let us acquire, from God and by practice, the faculty of enjoyment.Finally, we must not be misled by the Epiphany collect, In it we pray that after this life we may have the fruition of Thy glorious Godhead: we project ourselves forward to the next world, and think of the high degree of fruition which awaits us there.But because we pray for something in the next life is no reason why we should not begin to have it in this life, All the good things of the next life should have their beginning here.And surely, it is not going to spoil our sense of enjoyment in this life, because we are told that there will be greater enjoyment sssemerhemes ne beyond.Life is all of a piece: it Financial reports submitted at the annual Vestry Meeting of the Church of The Advent; held last Monday evening in the Parish Hall, showed remarkable progress had been made during the year.The « missionary apportionment was well over-subscribed and parochial revenue exceeded the Golden Jubilee Year of 1942.Rev, Sydenham B.Lindsay, the Rector, presided, A substantial increase in attendance at all services, and the installation of the memorial organ, received special mention.A cordial welcome was extended to Rev, Master, one who all his life followed the great teachings of the Christ.Me went even beyond the “Golden Rule.” He loved his fellow man not only like himself, but his entire life, his every thought were eonsecrated to the welfare and happiness of his brother being.Ven, Archdeacon Frederick George Scott, the beloved “Padre” of the armed forces in the Great War, died at the age of 82, after an existence entirely devoted to kindness, devotion, love and charity to all those he ministered to as a priest, an apostle and a friend.J “Canon” Scott as he was best known to the thousands of soldiers who either fell on the fields of battle or survived the terrible ordeals of the great world conflict leaves an imperishable memory.In the midst of shot and shell, in the muddy trenches drenched with artillery and machine-gun fire, the beloved Padre stood by the side of dying and wounded men from the Dominion and the other parts of the Empire.His last words and prayers sent many a brave Canadian boy on his last great journey with a wan smile on a face contorted with suffering and pain.Those whose bodies had been torn by fragments of bursting bombs, whose limbs were smashed and broken by bullets, or who gasped for breath when the Hun released waves of poisonous gas, found courage and resignation in the kindly words of their padge who stood by their side or bent over their tortured frames.Canon Scott was always in the forefront of the fighting.He shared all the privations, all the hardships, all the suffering of the soldiers in the actual firing line.He had no concern for his own safety.He never seeked relief when his presence could possibly alleviate the pain of his “sons” as he called the soldiers.He was always with the boys when they were in the thickest of the fighting and when they were in the rear of a brief respite.The beloved Padre did not only help the dying to face the ultimate great ordeal, or the wounded to show fortitude in their hour of bodily pain.THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, JANUARY 28, Scott was the counsellor, the advisor, the father confessor of the men in the Expeditionary Force.Men could come to him at any time with their troubles of mind, their worries and annoyances.They never left him without a feeling of deep relief and moral contentment.He was the “Padre” in every sense of the word, a “Father” to all the men who confided their innermost secrets to him.They always found consolation and comfort in his words of advise.But Cannon Scott was as much beloved by the civilian as by the soldier.While he was a true clergyman in the fullest sense of the word, there was no nar- | rowmindness in his mental make-up.The Padre was most tolerant and unprejudiced.He was beloved by those of all nationalities and of all creeds, and all were welcome when they appealed to him for council or advice.nature and disposition.He fully enjoyed a 1944 ! “Westmount’s Home this newspaper, and it ! does not accept responsibility for them.ar + 5 + Perhaps the German general staff may have propaganda reasons for stating the European war is about to be decided in*the next few weeks on the Russian front and for emphasing the desperate straits in Jhich the German army finds to agree there is really good cause itself.But military experts seem for their fears, and point out that .a great German army is apparently all but trapped in the Dnieper While he was a man of study and great pend and only a military miracle will free them, And the Russians accomplishments, he had a most charming nave swing with great force toward Bessarabia and Rumania, where they threaten the last natural oil supply of the Germans, and may, good story or joke even when it was told at unless soon halted, open a wide back door to Hitler's Festung his expense.He possessed to the greatest degree that outstanding trait of all truly great men, the love and affection for innocent little children.Canon Scott will be sincerely mourned, not only in this country, and this continent, but in many other parts of the world where his name and fame have spread.He was a gentleman in the fullest acceptance of the meaning, a scholar of brilliant intellect, a writer of outstanding repute, and it is no exaggeration to say he was a saint in the face of the Allmighty.Cannon Scott, in his humble and modest way, was one of Canada’s greatest and most beloved citizens.BREAKFAST-TABLE GRUMBLES ‘Said the bread: “I'm feeling crusty, but they kneed me, so I rise.” Said the bacon; Europa.Sensational thirty days.If the experts are right and Russia wins, one far- reaching development will be that Marshal Stalin will be the military master of the Continent of Europe.Representatives ot world-wide co-operative organizations recently held a conference at Washington which was direcied by the Committee on Co-operative Reconstruction of the Co-oper- ative League of the U.S.A, My friend, Dr.James P.Warbasse, president-emeritus of the Cooperative League and a member of the Committee, said in part: “There has been much talk of a world union.There is already a world union in the forty countries whose co-operatives are members of the International Cooperative Alliance.Here is a league of peoples — not a league of nations — and this league of peoples is perhaps the most important factor we have to consider in promoting international solidarity.It already exists in the co-operative movement which includes one-fourth of the people of the world.Heretofore, it has been the practice in countries with a surplus to relieve the sufferings in other countries through philanthropic means.That was the practice after the last war.People were given things — they got things for nothing — consumed them, and were left in the same position as they were before.If we can effect a method of self-help, a permanent rehabilitation of the economic structure of the various peoples concerned, we shall be making an historic contribution.Editors and other observers who are returning from Europe, are agreed that co-operative organizations must assume leadership in the rehabilitation work in foreign countries.“Fortune,” the $1 a copy magazine, has proposed that properties seized in the occupied countries by the Nazi powers should be turned over to co-oper- ative organizations as there are no other business organizations of a public nature to assume control over them.” Russia's advance into Poland has brought to a head the question of Poland's future.1t now seems clear that its fate and that of all eastern Europe will be settled on Stalin's terms.It seems; clear that the Atlantic Charter! does not extend to that zone.While the British and U.S.A.governments have been working, hard behind the scenes to effect a compromise, the break between Moscow and the Polish cabinet in London has widened.It seems clear that Russia means to do‘ jaway with the Polish govern- ment-in-exile which, the Russians claim, had a 1eactionary record while it remained in Warsaw and could never be trusted to adopt a co-operative attitude toward Russia if it were permitted “to return there.Evidently Stalin intends to destroy.it.His latest offer — and probably final — was to accept to Curzon line of 1919 bappenings* ,may take place within the next as the western Russian frontier, very little to the east of the line agreed upon by Stalin and Hitler in 1939.Compensation for Polish territorial losses in East Prussia was suggested.Stalin’s broadcast (January 11) was not addressed to the Polish government-in-exile but to the “Polish people.” The post-war Poland, the broadcast indicated, is to be governed by the “Polish patriots” who are now fighting with the Russian army., The idea has been advanced by some leading U.S.journals and legislators that only permanent U.S.A.occupation of the islands now being captured in the Pacific can adequately compensaie for the losses sustained in taking, them.Senator Chandler told the Los 4, Angeles Democratic Club that it would he “absolute cruelty” for the U.S.to be forced to give up any of the islands it is conquering, and the- Chicago Tribune stated that ‘Mr, Roosevelt cannot desert the bodies.of the American soldiers who died on Guadalcanal and Tarawa.He could not continue to live in this country if he so outraged the sensibilities of the persons who gave these sons.” But the weight of U.S.A.opinion seems to be that nothing but lasting peace can bring to bereaved homes anything that faintly approximates adequate compensation for those who are gone.And lasting peace in the Pacific requires something radically different from island annexation.The sober thought of the nation evidently is that building an American island em-: pire to dominate the Pacific, and: the Asia — with ils many, many.of millions — which ‘faces that’ ocean, is a short way to more war.- “Britain cannot survive living on dominated colonies; nor» can the U.S.A.survive if our college graduates are content with less than three children.The hope of every nation lies in good soil, large families and good male providers.The more who till their own land and the fewer who live on inherited wealth the better the nation will be.We Will never develop a strong race so long as so much of our radio time is devoted to teaching people to take pills instead of live properly; or to worship soft hands instead of hard work.” — Roger Babson, financial adviser and leading Congregational (US.A.) layman, “Shall we, at the close of this war, return to our pre-war unconcern regarding world conditions?Or have we realized that we are in reality ene world?Have we realized that our own security | depends upon the security of all nations?The Golden Rule has not been After much discussion the refs skated back to the little red dot on the right side of the West Hill net.Why ?Peirson’s stick was over his shoulder.West Hill's first score was no fault of Ian Fraser, who played a marvellous game in the West- mount nets.He stopped two shots in a row but was down on his knees for the third and couldn't get his hands on it.The referees argued over that one, too.Seemed they didn't know whether a West Hill player was in the crease or not.They decided he wasn’t.That made it 1-1, During this time the refs were meting out penalties to West- moun at the rate of four or tive a period.At one time Westmount had only three men on the ice including Fraser.’ The next West Hill goal was the most controversial of the game.Three “West illians ganged up on Fraser and one flipped a shot at him.Ian stopped it and fel] to the ice.From where I was sitting I couldn’t tell whether Ian was holding the puck, sitting on it, or whether it was loose somewhere in crease.At.any rate, the West Hilllans poked and shoved Ian with their sticks and We'd like to get away from the local Y.M.C.A.this week and tell you a few facts about Y.M.C.A.World Service.Probably we should have done this during the recent maintenance campaign but ‘Better late than never.” Here are a few point: : In 32 countries YMCA work has been established and developed through the World Service program of North American Y's during the last 54 years.The policy has been to help YMCA's become self-directing and self-supporting.More than 1,000 nationals now serve as secretaries and associations in these countries support 25 of their own after abcut a quarter of a minute either pushed Ian into the net or else batted the puck In.The referees argued over this one but decided to award West Hill the goal.They admitted that a West Hill player was in the crease.BUT THEY SAID IT WAS NOT HIS FAULT HE WAS THERE.Some naughty West- mount boy pusted him there, Fred Lang, head of the referees who was present at the game and who was conferring frequendly with his charges, said that was there interpretation.Now, as far as I know, the hockey rule.book states in black and white that if an opposing player is in the crease at the time a goal is scored, them that goal does not count.The refs admitted that a West Hill player was in the crease.But they allowed the goal.Westmount should definitely protest this game.4 secretaries for every man provided from North America.More than 10,000 business and professional men give their leadership and time.In war countries many have given pr-ctically full time during emergency periods.Ten million boys and young men have been enrolled as’ Ÿ members in these countries in the course of 54 years.: YMCA’s everywhere offer a broad platform of Christian living | i upon which people of all religious ' beliefs can unite.Of the 30 YMCA areas abroad with which the associations of the United States and Canada were co-operating -t the outbreak of hostilities, direct relations con- | tinue with 15.They are: Free China, India, Ceylon, Egypt, | Palestine, Turkey.France, Poland- | in-exile, Portugal, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil.Indications are that YMCA activities are being continued in varying degrees by nationals in Japan, Korea, Man- | churia, occupied China, the: Philippine Islands, Thailand, | Poland, Czechoslovakia, and: Rumania.| Don’t let anyone tell you that the Y is dying.It isn't and never will, Highlighting local Y news this week is the announcement that another Westmount Y night at the Park Slide has tentatively been set for February 18.The last one, which was held two weeks ago, was so successful that executive secretary Ernie Taylor thinks it would be criminal to let 1944 slip away without another, Y night at the slide.Howard S.Ross, the Examiner’s well-known columnist, will address à joint meeting of the Westmount Hi-Y clubg t the Y tonight “Modern Poelry” is the subject of his address.The meeting will be followed by dancing.F.G.Hubbard, personnel director of the Nativnal Council of YMCA’s in Canada.addressed last week's boys Hi-Y meeting on social work.need for a good education to ‘io this work and told the boys that there would be plenty of cpportun- ities available for educ tion and permanent work in the many fields covered by the YMCA.(Continued on Page 16) LEARN TO SWIM QUICKLY—EASILY it's easy to swim at the ‘A.Much easier than you think, Hundreds of men and boys learn to swim at the “‘Y' each year, why not you?Phone for complete information on swimming, diving and life saving.WESTMOUNT Ymca 4585 SHERBROOKE ST.W, He stressed the 1 È Sorat rn SO mre me mmc omer ae a cure _ rm ug ned cL me sig Ny ;
