bird that fouls its own nest” and when the fouling consists of supposed revelations as to discreditable actions bv one’s family, one’s party or one's own nation, it is almost always safe to discount them liberally, if not to reject them altogether.Victor Kravehenko, supposed official of the Soviet Purchasing Commission in Washington, chose his time shrewdly to rake his own country’s foreign policy with a broadside of accusations if the object in view was to lend aid and comfort to the enemy by stirring up distrust and suspicion of Russia in the United Nations—and it is hard to see what other object he can have possibly had unless he has been eaten with blind passion under the spur of personal grievance over some real or fancied injury.- Many of Kravchenko’s charges of “double- faced political manoeuvres” by his country directly contradict Soviet Government statements, such as his assertion that the Comintern has dissolved in form but not in reality. Some purport to give explanations—for what they may be worth—of confusing moves like the Russian about-face in Italian relations.difficult to contemplate the superb fighting machine that is the Russian army and the magnificent spirit of the civilian population, and then to credit Mr.Kravchenko's assertion that the Russian people “are subjected.to unspeakable oppression and cruelties.have lived in constant dread and want.” —e — It would be idle to pretend otherwise than that the two sides—the United Nations and Soviet Russia—are co-operating with each other only as far as they feel able or as appears to them in their own basic interests to do so.We are sure, however, that the United Nations are not deliberately “double-crossing” their ally and we refuse to believe on the tainted testimony of a Krav- chenko that Russia is deliberately *double- crossing” the United Nations.Even admitting that much of Russia’s diplomacy is mysterious to a point that invites suspicion, so that some people will be only too glad to swallow these charges whole, it is still true that the United Nations owe a great debt to Russian arms and that the present war situa- Army were defeated, instead of victorious as it actually is.The Soviet Embassy at Washington has lost no time in answering Kravchenko, nor does it “pull its punches” in so doing.Far from being head of the Metals Division of the Russian Purchasing Commission as he pretends, it is said, he has only been on temporary leave to assist that body as one of the inspectors of pipes.Called on to return home to continue his military service, it is further explained, this man refused to do so and made slanderous statements against his Government in order to cover up his desertion and, presumably, to.gain sympathy in the United States in anticipation of deportation proceedings.Of the two this story rings most true but in any event it will he wisest to suspend judgment regarding doubtful points until the truth can be ascertaihed, one way or the other.— ee — There is far too much at stake tu permit international relations to suffer at this critical stage in the war through the sensational accusations of a minor official that may perhaps prove in the end to have been completely accounted for the fact that hockey drew such consistently large crowds.Dick replied that it was because of the changes made in the game the past few years which had speeded up the play to such an extent that to maintain During the recent the pace each team used thirteen men—the maximum allowed under the rules.Every player gets into action in every game, “I believe baseball could take a leaf out of our book,” Irvin continued.“Big league teams carry some twenty-five men all season, yet often only nine men play for days at a time. Why not use the other fellows sitting around? If an.infielder or an outfielder isn't hitting good, or fielding well, on a particular afternoon, why not yank him and} put somebody else in?” , Trvin also told the Judge that pinch hitters ought to be allowed to hit for piichers without the pitcher having to retire from the game, and that fast fielders who were in a hitting slump ought to be excused from batting in favour of good hitters who can’t field so hot, and so on.» »*» 0» After analyzing Irvin's suggestions and giving some thought to thelr ramifications, we can only make the observation that hockey is Dick’s specialty, not baseball.Furthermore we're not so sure that the field days the hockey rules makers have been having every year have improved the game at all.As Leo Burns observed some weeks ago, “It’s not hockey any more; it's lacrosse on ice.” The wild scrambles around the goals make it Impossible on most occasions for spectators to see how a goal is scored, or who scored it.The red light flashes, and nobody knows exactly what happened until the loud speakers blare the name of the scorer and the names of the umpteen players who took a swipe at the disc at it went past ada who are each credited with an assist.* * » However, we won't belabour that argument, What we are con- gerned about here 1s that the stabilized excellence of baseball might be disturbed by tinkering with the rules by the crack-pots among the sporting fraternity.Hockey is a game of speed and intuition; baseball is at the other end of the scale—a game of.calculated strategy.Taking players out of the game one inning and shoving them back In again the following inning; allowing pitchers to miss their turns at bat; taking.a lefi-handed pitcher out of the box when a right-handed batter comes to the plate and putting him back into the box again when a left-handed” hitter comes up, and so forth, might appeal to the type of fan who likes to look at the bearded lady at a circus, but won't make much of a hit with serigus students of the game.» » + Besides, has Mr.Irvin or Ray Dumont (who wants batters to _be given the opportunity of running either to first or third when they hit the ball; would like to see men trying to steal second from tirst and third at the same time; and wants the plate dusted off periodically by a roboi)—have these men given any consideration to the official scorers? Some years ago, your chronicler was the official scorer of the old Quebec-Ontario-Vermont League and knows something of the problems a scorer has to face even under the rules as they are today. It was bad enough trying to decide if big Paddy Grenier was within the law in taking off the upper part of his uniform one hot afternoon and pitching in his sweat-soaked undershirt, without trying to compile a record of players entering and leaving the game half a dozen times.Besides, what comparison can there be between the achievements of the old masters and modern players once the rule-makers begin putting into effect some .of the suggestions that have come to light in this year of grace one thousand nine hundred and forty- four?We know today just how great by comparison were the feats of Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Rube ‘Waddell, because the game then was little different than today, But tomorrow, if the ideas of Mr.Dumont represent the shape of things to come, it will be as impossible to determine relative values as It is to make a comparison between the feats of Bill Cowley and Newsy Lalonde.— THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, APRIL school hall.Entries have heen received from the following schools : Westmount Senior High School, Westmount Intermediate High School, West Hill High, Catholic High and Gault Institute, Valleyfield. The ticket committee are already predicting a full house with the net proceeds going towards defraying expenses for the school’s 1944 athletic awards. In the feature bout of the evening the spotlight will again be on the Academy's prize athlete Milton Orr the blonde bombshell of St.Leo's fistic warriors and who in last year's Boxing Show thrilled the fans with his boxing skill and as for speed well if you have an idea what greased lightning is then you have a good idea of Milton in action. In the opposite corner facing Milton in this year's feature bout will be the sturdy Johnnie Kerr who expected the Annual Sports Social will take.place around the end of May and as usual the location will be the Oak Room of Victoria Hall. There is a tumor that certain interested parties in the Parish will put on a dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel In honor of our Championship Hockey Teams. We certainly hope this becomes a reality as such a successful season ag we have enjoyed should not go by organizing is the coaches’ plan to have next season’s football and hockey captains elected before ihe end of this term. This sounds like a good idea for a school of St.Leo’s size as the respective captains will have a good knowledge of their teams’ weaknesses and have plenty of time to scout within the classes to plug up any apparent weaknesses. In most big time colleges the election of ea captain a year ahead is a time honored custom.Mr.Burke will succeed Dr.Henri Bussiere as Chairman of the Sports Committee of the Parents’ Association. We are deeply grateful for the
