LISTENING is an art; ministers and priests, lawyers and statesmen certdinly know that.So do doctors. They practised it long before Freud made it popular among psychologists.Trouble is, that most of us who ever knew how have forgotten. Our hearing muscles, like any other muscles, can become useless without exercise.Learn the art of listening to other people and you can throw away all the books there are on how to become popular.Furthermore, you will find a very good solution to your own problems by lending a sympathetic ear to those of others. There is ego satisfaction An it too, because you'll become important to à good many persons. They'll know they can count on your interested receiving apparatus. This doesn’t mean you should pry or prod. It’ takes restraint to make a good listener. It takes intelligence and understanding and genuine sympathy for the other fellow. You ave to work at the job.You can’t cock one ear to catch what the man on your right is saying and convince the man on the left that his story is fascinating.A good listener has an ear that doesn’t get bored with the other fellow’s affairs, wants nothing in return for his interest, and won’t give advice unless asked for.Not all of us can sparkle when we speak, but we can all shine brilliantly as listeners. You don’t have to be eminent, witty or particularly clever to be a social success. If you can give out with a little time, a little attention and a little human understanding ; if you can give the people around you a hint of security today when everything that ‘once seemed solid and lasting is shifting; if you can give your friends a chance to talk about themselves; if you can convince them that} you really want to hear—because you really do—you’ll be successful.Everyone knows at least one very unpopular personality. They generally have developed some sort of flawless technique for holding the floor. To interruptions they pay convenience of members of parliament thefe has been an annual deficit of $25,000 a year. The running up of large bills by many of its patrons, which they have failed to pay, is held to be principally responsible. But in addition there has been a loss of table equipment which is stated to have run as high as $1,000 a session. The cafeteria, that is also operated, has always paid its way.It has been on a cash basis, which is now to be adopted for the restaurant as well, The delinquents are a fine lot of men to be entrusted with.parliamentary duties. How can there be any confidence in the manner in which they discharge their heavy responsibilities when they are guilty of such petty cheating? There must either be a considerable number of them or on the average they must have defrauded the treasury on a very considerable scale for such a loss to be sustained, What has been disclosed puts all the members under a cloud and those who have not tried to get ahead of the government in this fashion have a right to demand that the names of the men who have run up the bills that are being written off as uncollect- able be published. The constituents of the dead-beats are also entitled to -that
