22, 1944 SIXTH WARTIME CHRISTMAS MONDAY, next, we observe our sixth wartime Christmas. It is sad to contemplate the condition of the world as we celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace, but we can find strength for the great task ahead and consolation in the fact that we are fighting for the principles Ie preached.Qur enemies in this war hold beliefs that are the very negation of the teachings of Christianity.and, if they prevailed.would plunge the world into a lo1g night of tryanny and hopelessness the like of which the world has never witnessed. The sacrifices we are called upon to make to vanquish these enemies of evervthing we cherish are as nothing compared to what we should have to endure were we to lose this war. This is a good time, therefore, to resolve to do more in the coming year to make sure victory will be ours and the principles of moderation, toleration, freedom, and justice kept alive in the world.THE FACT OF CHRISTMAS DURING the depth of the first World War when suffering and gloom had brought the world to the verge of despair, some great Frenchman encouraged his fellow countrymen by reminding them that the tragedy - of the world would not prevent the coming of the spring. It is in some such spirit that one contemplates the return of Christmas in a world where strife seems everywhere present and good will as an effective inter-racial inter- - sectional, -and international force seems at the ‘for building the world on cleaner and better foundations. There is hope in-the realization.‘ that Nature and God do not fail, though man “ manages to plunge himself, his affairs, and.seemingly his destinies, beneath the waves : - Jowest ebb that it has been ever since the signing of the Armistice brought to the world a new hope of peace and a new opportunity of great and selfishness, and distrust and of greed and selfishness, of distrust and sus- THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1944 picion, and the lust for privilege and power. The return of Christmas is the persistent reminder that no matter how far the world goes astray there has been in the world a revelation of good will, a manifestation of the possibilities of the divine in human life, and a revelation of the grace that might transform and uplift a humanity responsive to its redeeming power.Christmas emphasizes the story of birth and beginning. It is the span of a brief life until the cross marks the divine tragedy in the presence of human sin and desolation. But the cradle and the cross alike belong to the Christ, and Christmas has become the symbol not only of the infant Jesus, but of the whole life of a suffering and redeeming Saviour.—The Advance, Boston.AFTER-THE-WAR BUSINESS TIP WE have often wondered what the Spanish, French and Italian that appears grapefruit grown in Japan and shipper to Canada: “Tt is well known how to cook oranges, cut them in two, off the seeds.then serve with sugar like grapefruits making.Morever.it is the most effective for stomach ache if provide them suitable.also to prevent from cold. You are always free from cold if vou have a half of it every morning, cooking them like grapefruits making.” It seems to us that it might be well for our exporters to have the copy of their foreign advertising read by a native of the country where it will be circulated before it is printed.À lot of translators claim to be more efficient than they are.Baltimore Sun: It would be absurd to project the events of the coming months in accordance with the timetable of 1918.Yet, if the element of time is left out, the sequence is worth keeping in mind: (1) the shaken confidence of the mniilitary command; (2) the shaken confidence on the home front: (3) the replacement of a “bad” Government by a “good” German Government; (4) the decision of the military command (Ludendorff) to give it up as a bad job; (5) domestic chaos; (6) the Armistice. One is justified in assuming that the first step in that sequence has taken place again.Beyond that, no assumptions are yet warranted.*"Westmount's Home Newspaper?w wv THE FORUM Conducted by HOWARD S, ROSS, K.C.,, D.C.L.In Which Subjects of When he was two, in London, there had been a sleet storm, but he had forgotten all about it.So when Michael saw the white streets, he concluded a kind of sand had fallen and coaxed to be allowed out to play in it.But when the snow stuck on his clothes he was dismayed. His beautifiil blue eyes regarded the persistently falling fiakes with amazement.“I'm all dirty!” he cried distractedly as he tried to beat off our best quality, highly publicized, prime Canadian snow! Giving that up as a bad job, he turned to studying the phenomenon and was simply awe-struck at the whole thing and at being ai- lowed to roll in it as much as he liked.Never in his life had he had so much stuff to shovel around. He gloried in it till his mitts got wet, then he said plaintively “This sand is very cold.” Then he kept getting wrong way to the wind with the result that every spadeful was blown back in his own rosy face, upon which he turned to his completely bi-lingual Aunt Adrienne and shouted ‘This sand is blowing in my face! Make it stop blowing!” (Don’t we wish we could!) ¥» ¥* * Another Christmas surprise for Michael was Santa Claus. He had never seen the red-coated bewhiskered gentleman in London.Curiously enough, though his upbringing in bomb-torn England had made him used to meeting strangers, and he is not at all shy, still he didn’t like Santa Claus at first. In fact he mistrusted him so much he wouldn't go near him, till for a considerable time he had watched other children approach Santa freely. Then, during a quiet spell, he gravely advanced and cautiously offered him a peanut.Santa took it with thanks and ate it.Michael grinned suddenly and then the two of them, like old cronies, sat there comfortably in the store finishing the rest of the peanuts and discussing Christmas business.% + % Michael and his French-Cana- dian cousins get on wonderfully well though neither understands a word the other says, On a recent day they invented a grand game with the window blind, one pulling it down with an admonition in French to leave it down, and the other pulling it up with instructions in English to leave it up-—all while in the best of tempers!
