See us first about a watch.We have a grand selezticn at OHMAN’ s so oo | | YOL.XV, No.52 - WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1944 Local Rotarians Carry On With Splendid Results That the Westmount Rotary Club is truly alive, and carries out a tremendous amount of community, charitable and benevolent, fraternal and social activities, was clearly demonstrated when Vice- President A.A.Boire, outlined, at the regular weekly luncheon on Wednesday, the work that had been carried on during the last six months by the various committees of the Club."What he divulged in his resume of the activities of the committees, is an indication that in spite of all adverse conditions created by war times, the Westmount Rotary Club can not only be proud of what it has already accomplished, but expect that when the annual report is submitted, it willw show that the organization has progressed and made a success of #11 it has undertaken to carry out.A very satisfactory financial statement was submitted, and President-A, W.Callard, who was fn the chair, Wäs sincerely congratulated for the splendid man- mer in which he had directed the activities of the Club during the last six months, In the report of the committees’ activities, it was shown that ‘the Carnival Committee, which is presided over by E.A, Everson, had made some $12,000 clear in four days.Smokes for Service Men The report of the War Services Committee, whose chairman is D.A.W.McKean, showed that 10,- 000 cigarettes had been provided to the officers and men of H.M.C.S, “Westmount,” as well as two bicycles, Every Westmount boy serving in the armed forces over- geas, in the army, navy or air force, received 300 cigarettes a month.The programme committee under the able chairmanship of P.J.M.Andrews, had provided first class and most interesting speakers, and had otherwise contributed considerably to the entertainment of the members of the Club.Special mention.was made of the Youth’s Service committee, who has as its chairman, W.G.Moxley.The boys’ camps and clubs had carried out a splendid work, and had obtained most sat- tsfactory and wonderful results.The Fellowship committee, headed by D.Kerr, had arranged for meetings with other organi- gations, through golf tournaments end other similar activities outside the city.The International Service Committee, whose chairman is C.T.Medlar, suffered considerably from existing war conditions, and its activities had therefore to be drastically curtailed.To Get Together It was stated that one of the best ways to get better acquainted was through visits to outside clubs, and this had been carried put by the Inter-Club committee, under the chairmanship of R, G.Burgoyne, _ The Personnel committee, under the chairmanship of E.A.Harrison; the Membership committee, directed by T.C.Stokes; the Service committee, whose chariman ig C.T.Medlar; the Attendance committee under W, W.Murray; the Finance Committee, directed by R.H.Dean; the Ad- Honor Former Life Boy Leader It was an inspiring sight to see FIt.-Lt, Don Scott, former Life Boy Leader with the 1st West- mount Company of the Boys’ Brigade, drop in this past Friday, while en route home after a three year period abroad, with the R.C.AF.He was warmly welcomed by a number of his former boys, now in The Boys’ Brigade Company, and immediately following his inspecting the Company, he was requested by Captain Richardson to remark on his findings.He commenced by stating how thrilled he was to see some of the old boys of his Life Boy Team now serving in the Company, particularly noting several with stripes of rank, showing that they had progressed most favourably, He was pleased to note all uniforms so well polished and said it brought him back to his boyhood days in the 3rd Hamilton Company.Prior to taking up leadership with the 1st Company, he had served from boy to officer in this Company and had proved to be a most successful leader.Later when asked to bring the boys a brief Christmas message, Flt.-Lt, Scott recounted several thrilling experiences which he had during the Blitz and then went on to say how much his early training in the Brigade had meant to him for it was put to a great test and withstood, particularly did he stress what the Spiritual training had meant to him, bringing from his pocket the B.B.Testament which every boy receives upon being enrolled in the Company, and stating that it was this book which had proved to be his greatest companion throughout; reading from it daily, he been at Westmount High for more years than most West- mounters can remember, During those years he has made hundreds of friends.The pupils love and respect him.Their hearts will be heavy if Pop gets shifted.So will Pop's.He likes it at WHS and may prefer to retire than take up duties at Roslyn, Fingerprints Convict Thief Footprints on the dry sand are easily erased by even the slightest breeze, but the fingerprints left by the dirty greasy hands of John Papas, 31, of no known address, remained in such indelible markings on a piece of glass that they convicted him of theft and sent him to window, and careful scrutiny and examination of pieces of glass by a member of the Westmount detective force, resulted in the discovery of a number of fingerprints.Papas had heen held on suspicion, and when his fingerprints the necessary strength to carrya-were checked with those on the him through, He stressed very strongly to the boys that they too would certainly derive much benefit by reading their Testament daily, in keeping with their enrolment promise.He will remain in Hamilton for a week to ten days and then return to Montreal where it 1s quite likely he will be able to resume the leadership of his Former Life Boy Team.The boys were proud to see him wearing the D.F.M.Activities are being carried on throughout the holiday period and this week it is expected a special feature will be introduced on Friday.Edwin Goring was made welcome this past Friday as he (Continued on Page 3) glass they were found to correspond and he was faced with the direct charge of theft.Although he however, that it formed à branch of the Chemin de la Montagne, which ran west from the Recollet Gate of Ville Marie.(Little St.Antoine St., a section of Dorches- ws NEY Flowers For NEW YEAR'S Corsages for land grants by the Seminary of St.Sulpice, (Seigneurs of the Island), after the Fort de la Montagne was established in 1684.The ‘‘Côte’’ system of granting land in long narrow strips, fronting on a shore, or further back, on a main road, was used in early French Canada, primarily for defence against Indian raids; so that all the farm houses could be built near together, and the men working in the fields could be within call of each other.According to one tradition, the Côte St.Antoine was the safest road from Ville Marie to Lachine, because, being well back from the river, it was out of the way of passing Iroquois raiders.It therefore was early chosen by prudent settlers, who, nevertheless, fortified their farmhouses, VITAL MATERIALS NEEDED Newspapers, Batteries, stability themselves, the two fall desperately in love with each other during an ocean trip.Because it it the first real love to come into their ill-spent lives, they agree to forsake their chance at luxury, Boyer to make good in six months.* The valiant efforts of the two to justify their existence, their respective trails of sacrifice, bitter disappointment and brave struggle, and an unforeseen Such must have been the thought of Producer BE.D.Leshin and Director Ralph Murphy when they decided to team Eddie Bracken and Gil Lamb in Paramount’s ‘‘Rainbow Island,” the romantic musical comedy In radiant Technicolor now playing at the Westmount Theatre.This picture about the adventures of three sailors on a tropical island is also noteworthy for Dorothy Lamour’s return to the sarong and the introduction of a new leading man, Barry Sullivan.Ever since the advent of motion pictures as an entertainment medium, right combinations have flourished like weeds in a Victory Garden.Both may be zanies, one may be a comic, the other a straight man, it makes little difference.The public seems to love them and proves it hy boosting their box office pull into boxcar figures, These ‘‘get-togethers” started back in the days when Wallace Beery and Raymond Hatton were the rage of the nation, The duo’s zany antics packed theatres throughout the nation, brought laughter to a world harassed hy war and proved that two names are often better than one.Hardy and Laurel, Lowe and McLaglen, Wheeler and Woolsey were comedy teams who delighted movie-goers in the past.More recently, managers of theatres showing Abbott and Costello pictures called for the riot squads to pro- ‘tect crowds attending the show.“Rainbow Island” is not the first Paramount picture to utilize the talents of Bracken and Lamb.The two comedians had audiences rolling in the aisles over their shenanigans in “The Fleet's In” and *‘Star Spangled Rhythm.” At any rate, they're back again, costarring with Dorothy in one of the season’s gayest and most amusing comedies.Movie fans have a real treat coming! here's a representative account of a busy man’s day at the office: In the first place, a man isn't at the office all day.From the time he leaves his bed until he gets to the office, an hour and a half is consumed.approximately as follows: Twen- ty-five minutes for bathing, shaving.dressing.Twenty-five minutes for breakfasting and reading.Thirty minutes for transportation.Ten minutes for walking to the office.On arrival at his desk.he talks over, with his peers, last night’s radio, the Walter Lippmann editorial, and the morning news.That takes twenty-five minutes.His mail takes an hour, depending on its quality and quantity.Now it’s ten o'clock and he receives a call reminding him of a luncheon committee meeting at 12.30.He receives another call reminding him of a conflicting engagement, which requires that he cancel the other engagement, but not without the promise to drop around as soon as he can tear himself loose from the first luncheon.; That brings him to 10.20, and a man calls to sell him a new heating arrangement for the house.It’s now 10.45, which seems to be a good time to dictate letters; but since the Canadian Art Theatre Starts Auspiciously BY RENE DE CARTERET At a time when the age-old characters.the part of some of the leading have to pitch in and raise some more money.He gets away at 2.00 and rushes to the second meeting, arriving just in time to hear about another deficit.He’s back at hte office at 2.55.Meanwhile more mail has accumulated and four telephone messages from personal friends, reminding him of engagements at 4.00, 4.30, 4.45 and 5.30.He calls back, confirms two and promises to do the best he can on the other two.He locates a stenographer, attacks his mail, but finds that little of it demands his personal attention, particularly since he is so rushed with important matters.He shoves it at the girl, telling her to do the best she can with it, Now it’s 3.45 and he’s due uptown in fifteen minutes.He confers with his assistants and delivers a few well-placed rebukes or compliments.He manages to check in at 4.10 with his friends.In fact.he looks in at three places and is home at 6.45.And yet some women doubt that men work like slaves. re RAR stone CAC CARR A BR 4 6 ‘apte Four Divisions , In the Pee Wees The pee wee section of the Westmount Municipal Hockey League will be split up into four divisions this year, two of them four team groups and the other pair, three team groups.The King George division will be composed of four clubs from Roslyn School with the captains heing Mike McCuiloch, John Fer- rabee, Jim Brown and Mori Jaques.The Prince Albert division will have three teams from King's school and one from the West- mount Y.M.C.A.The Teams from King's include John Gillingham’s Panthers, George Gough's Rinky- dinks and Andy Cote's Aces.The three team Western division includes a trio of outfits from St.Leo's Academy, namely the Greens, Reds and Greys.- The Staynor division includes three teams from Queen's school with Ray Boxer acting as captain for the Flyers, Eddy Kalil as captain of the Eagles and Ray Beaton as captain of the Corvettes.Games will be played ‘on the Roslyn, Prince Albert, Western, St.Leo's and Queen’s rinks.The Western and Staynor divisions will play inter-sectional games and at the end of {the season the four champions wu meet in a playoff to decide the city championship.Ÿ The three teams from King's school have lined Up most of their players with the Panthers signing on captain John Gillingham, Carl Burton, Mike Barnard, Bob Sherlock, Don Smith, Tim Col- linge, John Petrie and Allan Lightfoot.The Rinkydinks have captain George Gough, Bob Bun- ten, David Mackie, James Lough, John Lough, Jan Sandzelius, Eric McFadden ad Ronnie Aldred.Ande Cote's Aces have Sonny Gales, Howard Rosen, .Jack Cote, Peter Giffin, Stan North and Fred Russell.The three Staynor division teams have also lined up their players and captain Ray Boxer of the Flyers has signed up G.Davidson, G.Fehr, F, Wratten, R.Cohen, B.Feldstein, C.Petch and R.Monette.The Corvettes under captain Ray Beaton have signed up D.Kerr, B.Anthony, BE.Hough, J.Dorrance, N.Alanasoff, P.Craig, F.Eartly and J.Bea- sant.Eddie Kalil's Eagles include Gilmour Beasant, Fred MacDonald, John Smith, Bruce McBean, Drummond Marshall, James Craig and Bob Whiteside, The schedules for the teams in all four sections will be published in the Examiner next week but the team captains are asked to call in at the office in the greenhouse and get,a copy from Recreation Supefvisor Jim McCor- miek immediately.k é The Westmount Examiner Classified Advertising Two cacy \\ : = ess = , \\ PACE ELEVEN — PHONE YOUR ADS — WAlnut 2773x 15 WORDS 35.2c for each additional word rm “pieces, ROOMS TO LE" MONTREAL WEST—Two large aa- furnished rooms, with sun porch.Private home, $35.WA.1500.W-14 ROOM & BOARD GOOD home for elderly seml-invalid, male or female, nursing care, tray service, MA, (681.W-22 GARAGES WANTED WANTED— Heated garage, vicinity Argyle and Sherbrooke.WE, 1065.W-20 DOMESTIC HELP WANTED General Housework Apartment on Cote des Neiges, 9-12 every morning except Sunday.50e.an hour.WJ.8051.\\W-26 PERSONAL BENTONA Noted Psychologist reader.Trouble Speclalist for men and women.Questions answered.Appointments daily.F1.0801, W-15 AVENUE Tea Room, 364 Victoria Avenue.Home cooked meals, afternoon teas, teacup, card, palm and ar- FOR SALE LET a graduate pharmacist fill your prescriptions.Due to our policy of 6.30 p.m.closing, it Is possible for Mr.A, Rochman, B.Ph,, to fill every prescription we get We will call for and deliver your prescriptions at no extra charge.SOMERLED DRUG STORE 4625 WILSON AVE.DExter 1161.CHESTERFIELD VELOURS combination, never used, 3 modern gpring filled, sacrifice immediately, $75.00.EL.3614.5826 Sherbrooke Street West.w-3 ONE model aeroplane engine.FI.1020.W-17 BUNK beds, $37.50;
