The Boy Scout and Girl Guide Movements stand out in direct contrast to the Nazi youth movement. The Hitler youth is inoculated with a doctrine of racial superiority, of hate, of brutality, and of greed. The Scout-Guide Movement is the antithesis of Nazism. It seeks to inoculate a directly opposite philosophy. It seeks through its world-wide ramifications.to breed respect for, and fellowship with all races, all colours, all creeds. It seeks to foster a spirit of goodwill in Contrast to hate.It teaches respect for the physical and mental feelings of all peoples. It teaches the sharing of life’s good things with one’s neighbour, : It has been said that the Founder of the Scout and Guide Movements, Lord Baden- Powell of Gilwell died a broken hearted man In 1941, because Scouting and Guiding had not brought peace to this troubled world. If he did, he never revealed it to his closest associates.Scouting and Guiding aims at a world brotherhood. It could hardly be expected that in little more than a generation it could accomplish what the Christian church has striven for centuries to accomplish. But like‘ the church it is working to that end.Together with all other agencies and forces of goodwill this purpose will eventually be achieved, During this Boy Scout-Girl-Guide Week the public is asked to see Scouting and A Guiding in action, to learn more fully its purposes, and in the knowledge ‘gained to give it the moral support that the Movement deserves. The thousands of young men and women who are today giving voluntary leadership to Scout and Guiding Groups, are rendering a service to Canada, which if not | publicly applauded, must give them a tremendous amount of satisfaction.EDITORIALS ANONYMOUS | It is interesting to reflect, writes William | Feather, that almost all of the editorials in American newspapers are written by men whose identity is unknown to their readers.Victor S.Yarros, a retired’ editorial writer, wrote an article on this subject and ventured the opinion that the function of an editorial writer is comparable to that of a typesetter or proofreader. They put into words ‘the ideas of their bosses, and think no more about the matter. When lunching with friends, an editorial writer may express ideas quite contrary to what he has written that very day for his newspaper. In a political campaign, the majority of writers may personally support one candidate although they urge his defeat in their writings. Some people suggest that a kind of prostitution is involved, but we see nothing wrong.À chef cooks and a waiter serves what the customer orders.Editorial writers are no different from advertising writers. Both are craftsmen, selling their skill for what the market wiil pay.On their own time, they are presumably free to do as they please, writing and speaking what they like, RIGHT OVER A BATTLE Allied airmen bombing Berlin get a free look at the Battle of the Oder. They can see the Russian guns flashing and the German guns smoking as the Russians fight for crossings of the stream that guards the approaches to the Nazi capital.- When our airmen first went over Berlin the Russian front was remote geography to the Berliners. They had dreams of finding their troops in Moscow; they never thought the day was not far distant when Russian soldiers would be threatening to march down the Unter den Linden in Berlin. It must be heartening to our aviators to realize that as they bomb the German capital they are not only bringing missiles from the Western Front, but they are also softening up the Germans to make it easier for our side to go into Berlin from the Eastern Front.ETSI TER Ea A BRAND NEW HARI-KIRI METHOD TY a re .1 Low A .: : ., - 4 (re E Ci artes VistaiTa eat 1 Lu rer 8 THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 1945 grin rae SA Eppa pate > Cepes Aue) Lire “Wostmeunt's Wome Ï vw « v THE FORUM In Which Subjects of General Interest Are Discussed The opinions expressed In this Forum are not pa necessarily those of this newspaper, and it does = I not accept responsibility for them.> come à Boxing Commissioner. He fought in many countries and was Olympic Champion at Antwerp in 1920.He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford.» 8 & The U.S.S.Relief, Red Cross ship, carries the largest gun in the U.S.Navy—an 18 inch gun located along its keel as ballast, # æ » General McNaughton, who arrived at Ottawa to accept a position which the then Prem, Bennett had appointed him, was generally regarded as a Conservative until he became Minister of Defence. And Mr.Case now running as a Progressive in Grey North, contested the same constituency as a National Liberal-Progressive in 1940.Nothing has bebn said as to the former political affiliations of ex-Air Vice Marshal Godfrey or Mr, J.Noseworthy, C.C.F.member for York South who drew attention to the change of parties by the Liberal and Progressive-Con- servative candidates. No doubt they were also of another party before joining the C.C.F.and why not without censure or reproach. This recalls the retort of the famous Benjamin Disraell when accused of inconsistency because from time to time he changed his political opinions.‘If there are any persons in this House,” Disraeli replied, “who can derive any comfort from my disearded opinions, they are entirely welcome to them.” * + ¥* The hope of the future lies not in better human inventions but in better human relations, How strange that with so many able persons in the world so few search (as scientists do) for an economic plan which will be to the ad- | vantage of everyone, everywhere. That should be the test of any economic plan and if it stands that test it Will work well. Our present system does not stand that test so under it constant economic conflict is inevitable and so are wars which cost billions of dollars and what is much worse millions of lives. The economic conflict between nations and between persons within each nation during the usual 20 years between wars probably costs nearly as much as à great war, and in particular the making scarce things which are badly needed and this because under our present faulty system there is the incentive too often to plan to have artificial scarcity instead of removihg the barriers which keep the abundance from flowing through to people everywhere free of tribute to anyone Surely some day it will be pos- gible for the people of the world to see that the only plan which will give us unity and therefore permanent peace and prosperity will be a plan under which no one will be at a.disadvantage and each person will be glad to do their share of the work of the world— with all sorts of exploitation a thing of the past.% * » In à letter to the Nation, Dr.Judah L, Magnes, for more than twenty years president of the Hebrew University at Jerusalem, outlined a solution of the Palestine problem which he believes would be accepted by both Arabs and Jews. His proposal is to permit Jewish Immigration until numerical parity between the two groups has been established, to provide for politieal equality.and to satisfy Arab aspirations oy making this bi-national Palestine Edward Eagan, New York's new part of a larger union which would ring czar is the first boxer to be- also contain Transjordan, Syria and Lebanon, & » » He will still be Lloyd Georges David Lloyd George will be Earl Lloyd George ot Dwyfor, taking] his name from the mountain} stream which runs by his farm In] Carnarvonshire where he lives.J æ# » = Intimations that cars will be re-} tailed at 25 to 30 per cent above} pre-war prices brought from 76% per cent of 30,000.car owners canvassed by R.L.Polk and Com-}§ pany, recognized analysts of they automotive ' industry, emphatle declarations that they will not buy | new cars at any such figures.: 2 # + à WORLD ORDER have made clear 1s that an une} organized world leads to chaow.§ The right of nations to act in in- § ternational matters without regard for the righte of others has ; (1) there must be & meeting.of representatives to discuss eommon problems and work out international agreements, such as how to police the high seas; (2) there must be an oppor- | tunity to arbitrate differences of interpretation of agreements made; and (3) there must be provision for the enforcement of une dertakings and of world-wide order.; Behind ‘any world organization there must also be some common understanding of the objectives sought.Because we of the West have little genuine understanding of the Slavic, Islamic, and Oriental worlds, it will be difficult to come | to agreement on those objectives which are essentially ethical. The Anglo-Saxon nations, having taken several centuries to evolve the Four Freedoms have a come mitment to them beyond the commitment to them that other nae tions may feel.Stalin's notion of external co-operation and internal non-interference is a practical one, but he must convince us that he means it.The Atlantic Charter, incomplete but constructive, needs more discussion at home and examination abroad of the ideas it contains.— Antioch College Notes, & * # The Iron Hewers of History—e 900 years ago William The Cone queror crossed the Channel from Normandy and invaded England, The soldier who struck the fifst blow was named Taillefer whieh means Etsenhower.Taillefer died Octoter 14, 1066.Eisenhower vorn October 14, 1890.Both Tail- lefer and Eisénhower mean Iron Hewer.Rec Assi 8.00 10.00 11.00 8 7.30 À - Wow Another principle which events | 8.00 — gor.te a wy George, be Earl ,» taking 1ountain farm ini lives, 1} be re- | t above rom 76% ers can- j d Com-§ of the} mphatie j not buy es.g events an un- chaos, in in- ut re T8 has | iy.Be- } k, the § e, step ne an- to bel t.And | much ; Hall -by the Westmount Women's Club Drama .Group assisted by several guest players, in aid of the club’8 war services funds, proved to be an unqualified success both from the financial and esthetic points ot view.Rachael Crothers’ play, performed under the direction of Mrs.Louis de Savoye accurately interpreted the really big idea motivating the comedy. The cast was perfectly chosen, and the enthralled audience was so appreciative of the smart dialogue end characterization that a pin could have been heard drop.In this sixth year of the war the selection of ‘Susan and God” was, a, shrewd one, as the satire offers humor round a theme which is truly, as Susan said “tremendously big'—ir a nutshell, that Susan, taking up religion as a fashionable whim, found that Susan and God in a very short time changed to God and Susan.Dorothy Hervey was a fascinating Susan, Miss Hervey'’s vibrant voice, her expressive features, great personal magnetism and ability focussed all eyes upon her, Filmore Sadler, the guest star of the evening, played Barrie Trexel, Susan’s husband addicted to drink who took her enthusiasm for: God more ger- iously than she dreamed possible, and gave a faultless portrayal. His awkwardness with his very plain daughter, Blossom, — the dawning.of the ‘realization that after all, and a very unhappy one at that, was extremely weil done.Underplaying rather than overplaying he got the most out of every line and situation, Blossom, played by Barbara Todd, was beautifully real, in the first act, a poignant creature bursting with repressed love for her parents and a frustrated desire for a home.As Blossom's hopes were realized, Miss Todd was an utterly delightful teen ager leading a normal home life.First class work was done by Margaret Pitt, as Irene, and by Margaret McKean as the lovable Charlotte.Winnifred Hogan was ‘casually adequate in her part of Leonora. The other guest players of the evening were Douglas Peterson.John Cook, and Lawrence McGreggor, all of whom gave sourd performances.satisfactory, elegant in a light, gay colorful fashion, with charm- light through open windows and doors. To the Group's credit be it said that the performance started each evening practically on time.Victoria Hall was packed to the last seat both nights, and we prophesy that “Susan and God” as played by this drama group assisted by its guest artistes, will take a high place among the best amateur production of 1945.Jewish Women Support Drive For Save The Children Fund The Jewish women of Montreal will make a considerable contribution to the non-sectarian ‘Save the Children” Fund which has financed much of the rescue work in Europe, according to a decision made by a conference of the presidents of the women's organizations of the community in the Lome of Mrs.Samuel Bronfman, Mrs.Anna Raginsky, president of the Hadassah Organization of Canada and Mrs.M.Surchin, representing the: Pioneer Women's Organization, have pledged their support to this drive as did the spokesmen of a number of other important Jewish organizations. In welcoming the heads of the Jewish women’s groups, Mrs.Bronfman explained that Catholic and Protestant women across the country were also making an effort for the same cause. In particular the Society of Friends, (the Quakers) had been assisted by this fund to effect the rescue of many children, Jewish and non-Jewish.Lady Marler and Mme.J.E.Perrault-are co-operat- ing with the Jewish women’s groups in this project.Mrs.S.Gershon Levi read a letter from her husband who is serving ‘as rabhl to the Jewish troops on the continent. In this| letter Rabbi Levi told ob the sacrifices of non-Jewish families fho had risked much to hide Jewish children from the Nazis.“War increased our common responsibility for the welfare of the children’, said Mrs.Levi.“More of them are tragically maimed, orphaned and starved.Their minds are poisoned. We must give them à chance to live in a good world. This is the least we owe to the world of tomorrow.” * Mrs.Ben Robinson and Mrs.Rose Medine are co- The concert singer is so far removed from the operati® performer that often a famous opera star will embark’ on a concert tour and not make’ a success of the venture. He has pd EE not acquired the knowledge of Musical Sharps Flats and Naturals Frances Goltman how to “put over” a song on the recital platform, The opera singer is quite often too dramatic, whereas a good concert singer avolds this common defect.A recitalist who exaggerates the songs loses the Interest of the audience and the result is that he is not reengaged. Some singers, like Nelson Eddy and James Melton, are fortunate that they can sing any type of song equally well, First and foremost à solo yocalist on the concert stage must have quality of voice, also natural breathing and good pitch, clear diction, balance and contrast, and a pleasing presence.A singer must also know how to bulld a well proportioned nrogram in order to hold the attention of his listeners.A badly] balanced song program is much worse than an instrumental one.Outstanding concert singers include Nelson Eddy, Thomas L.Thomas, James Melton, Gladys] Swarthout, Lily Pons, Igor Gorin, Paul Robeson, Jeannette Maes.Donald and many others.A famous artist said, “To get to the top one must work very hard, and to stay at the top one must work twice as hard’.Next week, Number Four in this series will ba, “Technical Equipment.” * MISSION CONCERT A concert is being held under the auspices of The Montreal-City Mission, presented by The Metropolitan Choral Soclety, directed by Gerald Vanderpoll, Gold Medalist Conservatory of Music, Amster dam, Holland, in Wesley United Church Hall on February 238% at 8.15 p.m, % YORK Today Only ‘BOWERY TO BROADWAY," with Susanna Foster, Maria Montex, Jack Oakie, Donald O'Connor, and Peggy Ryan.“GAMBLER’S CHOICE,” Chester Morris and Nancy Kelly.Vladimer (St.Catherine at Guy St.) MONTY JUNE HAVER DICK HAYMES .fr WESTMOUNT Todsy and Saturday SATURDAY Until Tuesday WOOLLEY Starts with John GE = (Shorbreske et Grey Ave) Anthony Quinn + Beverly Whitney + Maxie Rosenbloom ond The Metrepeliton Opere Singer .LEONARD WARREN and BLANCHE THEBOM - Directod by GREGORY RATOFF * Produced by DAMON RUNYON + YORK Added Feature — ANN SOTHERN in “Maisie Goes To Remo,” % WESTMOUNT Added Feature — ‘HENRY ALDRICH PLAYS CUPID”, with Jimmy Lydon.Hodiak.For One Week Romance In 4 Technicolor! in the Prince Albert or King's section. As it happens the luck of the draw matched these two teams up, and they will meet in the first of a two games total goals to count series at Westmount Park to-morrow afternoon, starting at two o'clock. The second game of this series will be played at the St.Leo's ffnk on Monday afternoon, starting time four o'clock.’ The other half of the bracket King George section, while the Coryettes and Eagles are battling it out in the Staynor group. The championship of the West- mount Municipal Hockey League will be decided when the winners ef these two brackets meet in another two games total goals to count series. This has been one of the most ambitious pee wee programmes in the history of the league, with some 14 teams playing a full schedule of games, but the race has now narrowed down to four clubs, or at least it will be by the time this paper is printed. The Greensh of the Western section was the first section titlist of the season. The Greens downed the Reds in both games of their two games total goals to count series, the winners copped the first fray 3-1 and then came back with a 4-3 victory in the second tilt. This gavé the Greens Panthers.Burton scored all five goals in the first game and notched two more in the second tilt.Don Smith scored the Panthers’ other tally, while Bob Bunten notched the only goal of the series for the Rinkydinks. One of the biggest gurprises of the season took place in the first game of the play-offs in the King ‘George when the Grosvenors, winners of all six league games, were held to a 4-all tie by the Boulevards. The teams met again on Wednesday in the second game of the series, with the winner going “afternoon.on to represent thelr group against the winners of the Staynor Alexander’s juvenile Eagles may upset the apple-cart.The Golden Eagles’ representatives, as champions of the juvenile and midget A’ sections of the Westmount Municipal Hockey League, of Iron had reorganized and began playing under the title of Wanderers, a name that was to become as famous as the game of hockey itself, They entered competition auspiciously, and won a place in the Stanley Cup play-offs.Ottawa had eliminated Toronto Marlboros in easy fashion, and then began the long rivalry which existed between the silver seven, the barber poles and the red bands for many years.Only one game was played, however, in this first series between the two, and that ended in a draw, 5 to 5.There was ill-feeling between thbe‘two teams, charges and counter charges, and Wanderers finally decided to withdraw from further play.finished the season by beating Brandon, Man., handily, 8 to 6 and 9 to 3.Era of the Ottawas The Ottawas dominated the game for the next two years. In 1905 a team came all the way from the Yukon Territory to con- but the northeners were no but thee mnortherners were no match for the finished play of the eastern champions, and went down by scores of 9 to 2 and 23 to 2.Not s0-easy, however, was Rat Portage, These lads from Kenora and vicinity, some of them wearing the new tube skates, gave the Ottawas a terrific battle, winning the first game 9 to 3, but losing the next two, 4 to 2, and 5 to 4.Ottawa successfully defended the cup against Queen’s University and Smith's Falls in 1906.The students were no match for the fast, tough men from the capital, losing 16 to 7, and 12 to 7, but Smith's Falls had turned out an excellent septette considering the size of the town, and in the first game gave the Ottawas a scare, holding them to a 6-5 score. The effort took a lot out of the Smith's Falls boys, though and the Ottawa team recovered from its over- oonfidence in the second game, and won 8 to 2.The trophy passed to Wanderers at the end of the Ottawa thenk season, however, by virtue of having won the championship of the Canadian Hockey Association, and defeating the Ottawas in the process.; Upset by Kenora Thistles The biggest upset in cup history, to date, occurred in 1907, when Kenora Thistles came down to Montreal and took the famous Wanderers by scores of 4 to.2 and 8 to 6.Later the same season a return series was played at Winnipeg between the teams, Wanderers winning the first game 7 to 2, and losing the second 6 to 5.As only two games were called for under the agreement, Wanderers were declared winners of the series on a round-score basis, Wanderers uad reached the zenith of their fame in 1908, as they swept through their league matches, and humbled three famous teams in cup matches, Winnipeg Maple Leafs were the first challengers and were disposed of, 11 to 5, and 9 to 3.Toronto went down in a sudden-death game, 6 to 1.Edmonton were much better than the other two challengers, splitting a two-game series, but losing on a total-goals agreement, Edmonton challenged again in 1909, but lost to Wanderers who were later defeated by their old rivals, the Ottawas.Ottawas de- 1846 THE MONTREAL
