and an evening of varied entertainment put on by the Scouts, Guides and Cubs.More than 100 members of the three organizations and their familles and griends were present, - : Mr.McDowell was introduced by L.J.Dunbar, chairman of Stanley Church's Scout committee, and the minister spoke on the need for a four-fold lite embodying ‘religion rd and mental, social physical caps bilities. His brief address was followed by a ‘‘radio talk’ by Scout master Whittet and Cyril Dendy, field secretary at Scout headquarters. Then came community singing led by Dr.E.D.Lewis, ‘with Bert Rogers accompanying on the piano, Girl Guide leader Miss Stanfield putting on a show with some of her Guides, a skit by the Fox .Patrol and the presentations. After an intermission the program resumed with Scout Peter Aykroyd's marionette show, movies and finally Scout Master Whittet leading in the saying of the Scout promise.’ Scout Bruce Robertson acted as Master, pupil of Miss "Rose Goldblatt, gave an interesting piano recital of music ranging from Bach to Shostakovitch last Monday evening at Victoria Hall (Westmount). After an absence of about two years from the concert stage, this was a membrable return for Miss Master. The main work on Miss Master's program was Beethoven's Sonata Appassionata in, F Minor, Opus 57.This sonata acts at all times as a chalienge to all pianists, Miss Master's interpretation was good on the whole, her attack on the second movement however was not entirely called for. This movement is one of respose, it acts as an , Interlude between the stormy first - rainy day and last movements.Due to the heavy playing it seemed like a between two stormy ;.days instead of creating that pas- :toral feeling ‘one adventures be- I tween -stormy days.It- was also noticed in her interpretation that * alie had a little trouble with pedal - leakage. It was the performances of the - first two compositionse that Miss © i { r ‘Master proved herself an.artist._'The first of these two works was Corelli’ s “Folies d’Espagne” ar ‘ranged for piano by ‘Miss Gold- “'blatt. This piece wag à series of “Pictures, they almost sounded like _3 theme and variation.Miss Mas- “ ter’s playing of them was clear cut e MUSICAL Score Adams and flawless at all times. It was a pleasure to listen to them, Better still was the remarkable performance -of Bach’s “Organ Prelude and Fugue in A Minor" arranged for piano by Liszt. The outstanding feature in this rendition was the remarkable - technical power of Miss Master's left hand. Not often does one hear Bach's organ transcriptions so enthusiastically and brilliantly played on the piano.Of the entire program this was the most enjoyabe. After the intermission Miss Master returned to play the lighter portion of her program. She opened with the well known Capriccio in B Minor by Brahms followed.by the charmingly graceful Intermezzo in A also by Brahms. It was in these two compositions that Miss Master showed her ability at phrasing.Three Fantastic Dances by Shostakovitch followed, these being plated with precision lost none of their humour.Miss Master closed her listed program by playing two compositions by Liszt. In the first of these, Die Lorelel, the artist was given ample opportunity to display sentiment in music. The other Liszt composition was his Concert Etude In F Minor. Here brilliance was Miss Master's Watchword. The coneert closed with two encores: Gra- ‘-nados’ “Playera’”; and a Mazurka by Chopin.Westmount High ‘(Continued from Page 1) ‘who - has ‘preformed the greatest service tothe school and who best has combined the reported killed in action during air operations overseas.Educated at Argyle and Westmount High schools, he was one of the earliest members of the No.1 (Westmount) squadron Air Cadet League of completed a tour of operations.Besides his mother, Flying Officer Badgley is survived by two brothers and a sister. One brother is at present completing his pilot training at Centralia, joined the air force in September, 1942.He was commissioned on graduation as à pilot at Camp Borden in 1943, and went.overseas early last year.A hrother, Clifford H.Harrison, is in the Canadian Army.‘tion.| The Editor : This is in regard to news îtems appearing in.the Examiner on February 16 and 23 with reference to a new branch -of the Legion at present being organized in Westmount. While we ‘have mo objection to another branch -of the Legion in this locality, yet of necessity we must take strong -exception to two inferences reported In connection with the new organiza- Firstly, it was stated the R.M.R, Branch is regimemtal; secondly, the statement that “It is felt that a good live branch) can be established for the West- mount district” would by inference imply that the R.M.R.Branch is not alive and progressive, Both the above inferences are quite unfounded and show a lack of appreciation for the out: standing work which has been and is being done by the R.M.R.Branch.During the past three years, our branch has grown from slightly over one hundred to more than three hundred and fifty members.Though we take = natural and commendable pride in the tradition of the Royal Montreal Regiment with which we are affiliated, yet no effort lias been made to remain ex- clusivee Our membership includes not only many veterans who gerved with regiments other than the Royal Montreal Regl- ment, but also includes the var- fous branches of the _service Army, Navy, Air Force, and Merchant Marine, bound together in one great brotherhood. Our firet Vice-President and three of the six members of the Executive Committee are veterans of this war, our object being to hand over tbe active direction of the branch to the young, active, and energetic veteran just as soon as he is prepared and willing to assume the responsibility. From the foregoing you will realize that though we are the pioneer branch of the Legion in this locality and though we have a fine background of regimental tradition, yet we are far from exclusive and far from dead.Returning veterans and also those of the last war who have not yet joined the Legion and who seek to join a branch of proven experience and service and possessing something more than mere newness and imexper- ience as recommendations, will ‘be well advised to get in touch with the Secretary of the R.M.R.Association, Quebec Branch No.14, Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L., whose address and telephone number are given below. While ix the past we have been content to contact the returned man and etrive to serve him ir every way possible, without seeking publicity for our efforts, wn feel that in simple Justice you will wish to rectify the misconceptions, which we be- lleve were quite unintentional, by giving to this letter the same prominence as was given to the articles regarding the proposed new branch.Yours truly, Max R.LeRoy, Secretary.Telephone WI.6307.Fire Fighter Arrives Back From Overseas Harry MacDougall Jones, son of Mrs.Alan M.Jones, of 4216 Dor- chester street west, Westmount, who has returned to Canada following service in England with a Canadian fire fighter unit stationed at Portsmouth since October, 1942, according to word re- celved last night.Enlisting early in 1942, he trained at Ottawa and went overseas that fall. His wife and small son live at Valois and ee Westward (Conttuned from Page 1) ferred number of evictions ‘of servicemens’ families from their homes and he suggested that at the meeting] ‘of.the service clubs the subject of doing could ‘be profitably studied.Westward president introduced Mr.W.Allan who went directly to the heart of a stirring appeal for Boy Scout funds- for the next five years.’ 860UT FUND APPEAL He spoke of the need” of 7,000 boys of Montreal, about ‘there being only £00 volunteer workers among them, where 600]o ‘| could well be used, of only 56 professional workers employed against 7 that were essential. The .Boy Scout representative showed how only 25% of these boys were enjoying the boyish romance of camp, of practical scoutcraft, and incidentally good citizenship under the ideal con- ‘ditions, as against the 80% at very least who should have these camping privileges.Mr.Allan went on to say that the Boy Scouts had high priority with the newly formed War Assets Corporation for the supply of tents, boats, huts etcetera - providing they had the money to pay for them. That he was in the presence cf close friends of the Boy Scouts he was as thoroughly convinced as he was that the quota for the next tive years would be reached, which wag $206,000 and that a 25% oversubscription, which would bring the sum to $260,000 could be as readily reached if all would realise that this would give à 50% profit return in boys in camp and training, which would mean the grounding of a new generation and new citizens.Mr, Brewerton then produced a quartette worthy of a repeat anywhere, Cecil Medlar, 8.Cuth- bert, Jim McAndrews and Duncan Shanahan who excellently rendered ‘In The Evening By The Moonlight’ and ‘Sweet Adeline’, the title of the second, drawing, for
