Rotary”: Club as part of their boys’ work campaign, has just about completed its first year of activities.The club was inaugurated last spring with its headquarters in the Cal- fary Church at the corner of Dor- chester street and Greene avenue.This site with a gymnasium, showers and game rooms proved & popular redezvous for boys of all ages, races and creeds.These premises, unfortunately, had to be vacated in the fall and the club was unable to obtain satisfactory accommodations for the boys.However enthusiastic groups of youngsters attended the “gym nights” Friday in the Westmount Y.M.C.A.Dr.Reid took for his topic the Object of The Boys’ Brigade, which is, ‘The Advancement of Christ's Kingdom amongst boys and the promotion of habits of Obedience, Reverence, Discipline, Self-Respect and all that tends towards a {rue Christian manliness,” and emphasized very strongly the great importance of building their lives upon that great, solid foundation.Other guests of the evening were Douglas Manuel, formerly of the 77th Belfast Company and now with the Fleet Air Arm, training in Canada.He greeted the Company briefly and stated that it had meant much to him as a boy, up until the time of his enlistment, Rev.Gerald Fee was also at the head table and extended a very wart greeting as well as his best wishes for the Company's success.Gordon MacIntyre.Arthur Hame mond, and G.E.Richardson were also special guests of the evening.Captain J.Howard Richardson presided over the banquet.Awards le At the.display in the High .cu (Continued on Page 2 i AS RTE grr Question —Was there a Tennis Club in Westmount in 1889, and who were the organizers?Answer—In the year 1889, under an old elm tree, later removed In laying out Sherbrooke ptreet, in the municipality of Cote St.Antoine, 11 men gathered together to organize a lawn tennis elub.They were Percy and Guy Simpson, Fred and Arthur Crawford, Jim and Allen Kerr, Douglas MacFarlane, Bob Sweeney, Charlie Raynes, W.A.Hamilton and Harry Penfold.In founding the Cote St.Antoine Lawn Tennis Club, they little dreamed of what a future lay before the game of lawn tennis and the leading part the new club would ultimately play in developing tennis in Canada.The grounds and clubhouse were located at the southwest corner of Kensington Avenue and Sherbrooke street with four grass and two cinder eourts for play after rain.The Club flourished and many championships tournaments were held as well as club matches against McGill, M.A.AA.and Ottawa and such was the interest in the game that many of the leading members turned out at six a.m, to practice and get in condition for these Matches.Ail went well till 1906 when the rented grounds were sold for build lots.Faced with this prob- Jem, strenuous efforts were made to build a new club owning its own property: after many meetings and much effort in selling ptock the necessary funds to make a start with the property were procured and the new grounds below Sherbrooke street between Grey and Vendome avenues were laid out among the hay fields and apple orchards, with nine grass courts and space for seven hard courts, with clubhouse being located at the northeast corner of the grounds beside the large elm tree still standing at that point.On March 18, 1907, the old Cote Club wound up its affairs prior 10 a succeeding meeting at which the Mount Royal Lawn Tennis Club took over.The {following were present at the meeting emong whom will be noted many Jocal and Canadian champions of yesteryear: C, W.Yarker occupied the chair, the others being A.D.Anderson, Dr.D.F.Gurd, A.C.Dunlop, J.D.Bell, Pzul Garneau, T.Y.Sherwell, A, 8.Cassils, R.P.Jellett, S, McKay Edgar, W.A.Holland, F.Peacock, J.A.Pre- vost, James L.McCulloch, J.F.Savage, Royal and Stuart Ewing, R.T.Gaunt, Rex Denne, H.E.and H.M.Suckling and S.Nops.Moving out to the new grounds was quite a venturg as the carline’s western limit was Victoria Avenue, and none of the members drove motors.A three-plank wooden gidewalk marked the way to the grounds along Sherbrooke street and many were the misgivings at moving so far out into the country.The old clubhouse was moved out intact to the new grounds via Western avenue, but before arriving at its destination it successfully blocked the tram lines for some hours at Victoria "avenue in spite of all the eloquence of the contractors.This contrary ettitude on the part of the clubhouse wag considered to be due to its desire to see a street car which “were few and far between in those days.The fees of the new club when opened were $18 for men and 87 for ladies.The men enjoyed the privilege of a cold shower and provided their own towel which had seldom dried from the previous day.Possibly the ladies did not play hard enough to require showers as none was provided for them, till on one famous occasion the club was visited by Miss Kay Sutton who later became Mrs.Tom Bundy) champion of the Ne = from Wimbledon, having won thé.English Championship.After a spirited but losing exhibition with the club champion, H., M, Suckling, she demanded & shower, and being a very determined young lady it was necessary to clear all the men out of their locker room to accomplish this purpose, with the club president guarding the door.This incident may have fired the members with enthusiasm for a new clubhouse with hot water" and showers for everybody which finally took shape in 1912 when the present clubhouse was started.when World War I robbed it of so many leading players, just as Worid Wâär II is doing now.But in the meantime there were some glorious years after 1918 when tennis rode the crest of the wave with visits from time to time of the leading Davis Cup teams of the world, the Americans, Australians, Japenese and Cubans all playing Davis Cup tiles on the grass courts of the Mount Royal Cl to say nothing of exhibition maîches in which French and English champions as well as English Wightman Cup ledies participated.And while the club is again sending of its best to war, the old spirit prevails as evidenced by the turnout to see the exhibition put on in September 1941 on its grass courts by the former English champions in their worthy effort for the Red Cross.Ed.Note.—We are indebted to Mr.Reg.T.Gaunt for his interesting and accurate history of the founding of the developments from 1889 to 1942, Chester McBride (Continued from Page 1) interested in church and charitable work.He was president of Westmount Rotary in the it plans to convert into a boys’ summer camp, the Optimist Club of Montreal is making à big stride to assist underpriviliged boys and strengthen them against causes responsible for juvenile delinquency, John F.Dalton, Superintendent of the Boys’ Bureau, Federation of Catholic Charities, and chairman of the Optimist Club’s Boys’ Work Committee, stated yesterday in an exclusive interview with The Examiner.Purchase of the 340-acre property was completed when Albert C.Lloyd, president of the Montreal club, presented its cheque to the former owner, Gardner Stone.» - - The property contains a three- storey, 15-room house, capable of accommodating 30 boys at one time, and plans are Deing considered to eventually provide space for many more.CONTRIBUTORY OFFERS At the same time, arrangements are nearing completion for a three-day bazaar to be heid in Victoria Hall, on April 12-13-14.Paul Wickham, an ex-president of the local club and former governor of District No.15 of Optimist International ,is head of the Bazaar Committee.No Discrimination No discrimination will be made in the gelection of boys to attend camp, he emphasized, adding that the Optimist Boys’ Camp will be non-sectarian, with provision being made to have religious services for boys of all creeds.There is much need for summer camps of this kind, Mr.Dalton declared, particularly in view of war-increased juvenile delinquency.Such factors as fathers serving in the armed forces and mothers and older children working in munition plants have resulted in lack of parental guld- ance, with the inevitable reaction that youth bas been left pretty much to its own devices, Study and Recreation “Through classes in dramatics, woodwork and other handicrafts of natural interest .to wherever gypsies were found they were sent to the terrible camp at Troblinka, where they were gassed and cremated.What justification there was for this slaughter, apart from pure cussedness, we do not know, for the gypsies are among the purest Aryan peoples of the world.Perhaps Hitler hated them because they were such poor Nazi material.It is impossible to impose order or discipline upon a gypsy; it is impossible to affect him with propaganda, for he instinctively questions everything he is told; it is impossible to impress him, and it is impossible to quench his lively sense of humour.We confess to a great admiration and affection for the -gypsy people for these very reasons, and we can understand why they would not {it into the Nazi pattern.—Peter- borough Examiner.THE DXAMINER, FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 1945 THE FORUM Conducted by’ HOWARD $, ROSS, v w not accept responsibility for th Im Which Subjects of General Interest Are Discussed - The opinions expressed in this Forum are not necessarily those of this newspaper, and it doss | em, K.C., D.CL .= 4 ~ Feb.8, 1945, & pañ-Arab League Arabia.| movement.attention will be given to problems like those of Palestine, of the Suez Canal region and of the future of the fabulous Arabian oil.The Arab League will put a new aspect on international affairs from Tunisia to India.Some students of the middle east think it may have as important a relation to future peace as the Yalta and San Francisco conferences, + J » The Chinese have a four-charac- ter proverb, which might be paraphrased, “Ultimate truth Is unitive.” & » & The only way strife between nations, as between individuals, can be effectually prevented is by the practice of the Golden Rule— the Sermon on the Mount—in all their relations, This has wisely been called *‘Christianity’s hidden talent.”—Francis M.Hall, Cleveland, Ohio.# & = The X-Ray is very clost to baving its golden anniversary.It was in November, 1895, that Professor William Rosentgen, in his laboratory at the University of Wurzpurg, accidentally found that the emanations from a vacuum DIE LORELEI] © VAE tube had passed through opaque materials and caused a photographic to be fogged.Two months later he was able to photograph, before Wurzburg Medical Society, the bones in the hand of their president, The X-Ray, like every other machine, is only a machine; but I myself applaud myself at home, when I gaze at the money in my coffers.” This Toronto team is much better than most of ‘the experts conceded before the series started.Incidentally, there Is plenty of criticism among the fans at the action of the Forum In reserving the rush end.Blame for the action was placed on the inhabitants of the north end, but this is just so much twaddle.The missiles came from all over the rink, most of them from reserved seat holders close to the ice.However, the incident provided a good alibi to early two-goal lead to win, out- playing Canadiens all the way.Sports Parade 1945 Sees Maroon-Canadien Classic Though Leo Dandurand has been rounding up an all-star aggregation to represent Les Canadiens, which he piloted to fame and glory in previous.years, there is no doubt that the Habitants will clash with some very serious opposition with the Montreal Maroons at the Forum Friday, April 6th, in the grand Sports Parade of 1945, which is to be presented under the auspices of the Montreal Rotary Club in aid of their many deserving Charities.Mr.Dandurand will have Wilf Cude in thé Canadien nets, and on the defence will be such well-known figures as Sylvio Mantha, other stars of bygone seasons.Canadiens will really produce a team that could hold it’s own in any company.Leo Dandurand is working night and day on his Canadien problems, and has promised to place on the ice a team that will give an excellent account of itself.Maroons-Canadiens Organize Maroons are also getting organ- We Jzed.Tommy Gorman, who has feo promised to handle his old Big Ï Red Machine for.the April 6th : festivities, announced yesterday that Gus Marker, one of the best right wingers that ever wore the Maroon colors will certainly be on hand for the occasion.Marker was in Montreal for the playoff game and he offered his services for the Sports Parade.There is a strong possibility that the famous Green Line of the Maroons — Gracie, Marker and Cain, will be re-united for the big match.Gracie recently tied with Bol Walton for the scoring championship of the American Hockey League, and Cain has been playing brilliant hockey for the Boston Bruins.Cain will be available if the Bruins are not in the championship finals at that time and Gracie has already promised to be on hand.Toronto will confer with Lionel Conacher and also with Cy Went- worth and other Maroon graduates, with a view of having them here.Hooley Smith and Joe Blinco are certainties for the Maroon team.Archie Wilcox will also: figure on the defence of the Big White Maroon team, .Alex Connell is coming down from Ottawa, accompanied by | = he Thuis en.Walter Buswell and Battleship Leduc.Barry, Paul Haynes and several} Up in front will be Marty the Maroon team will be a formidable one.Lionel Conacher is already training at Toronto, and there 1s.a probability that Dave Trottier, who has been refereeing .ee n Plastic centre Vancouver will be the post-war nucleus of a great plastic and plywood industry, and the centre ricated dwellings for devastated Europe, predicted Henry Castillou, K.C.Such international trade would provide employment for returned members of the armed forces, up for the gigantic charity show.Rotary Club Committee Col.St.Clair Holland, chairman of the Rotary Club committee in charge of the Sports Parade, announced yesterday that Cooper Smeaton had consented to referee the Canadien-Maroon game, thus adding another touch of color to the gala program.His assistant will be made known within a few days.Smeaton was one of the greatest referees who ever graced the National Hockey League.Col.Holland has also completed negotiations with Secretary James Foley, of the Quebec Senior Hockey League, President Norman Dawe of the Quebec Amateur Hockey Association, President George Foley, of the Quebec Senior League, and President Bob Lebel, of the Interprovincial Group, whereby a high class amateur hockey exhibition will also be presented in connection with the Sports Parade.Plans for the amateur display are in the hands of the afore-mentioned officials, and they will announce early next week their complete program, Speed Races In addition to the Maroon- Canadien classic, which will be the chief attraction, and the amateur match, there will also be other breath-taking sport features, including speed races, in which amateur and professional contestants will take part; Mr.MceGiverin then revealed how the rubber plantations arrived in Ceylon.“In 1876 the British Government Were looking for a crop to replace coffee in Ceylon, as coffee had developed a blight which seemed difficult to eradicate.been carrying on research in Brazil and studying the value of rubber.He found he could make plantings from seed and this interested Sir Joseph Hooker who was head of Kew Gardens in Lon- “don, England.As a result—Hevea Braziliensis seeds were brought to Kew Gardens and planted and shipped out io Ceylon.Out of a cargo of seeds, at the end of their swaunderings only 17 plants survived in Ceylon.” Of the wartime demand on both natural and synthetic rubber “Al- awys Congenial” MecGiverin revealed “The demands for huge quantities of essential rabber or rubber type war items, such as tank tracks, bogey wheels, automobile equipment, clothing, footwear, gas masks, boats, floats, gas and water storage tanks, puncture proof gas tanks and hose, fire hose and myriads of ftems, many strange to the industry were produced.Produced {a hitherto unheard of quantities and on express schedules.These were some of the problems laid in the lap of the rubber industry.That they met that crisis is a tribute to the workers and management of one industry that will stand as a record of great achievement.” Turning now to the development of synthetic rubber which took place over a period of time ia ali the major countries of the world the speaker gave important dates in the synt”etic rubber history.Beginning in England in 1826 Mr.McGiverit stated that *In 1826 Michael Faraday (England )showed that natural rubber was composed of five atoms of carbon and eight atoms of hydrogen.It was therefore called a hydrocarbon.Other familiar hydro carbons are gasoline, kerosene, turpentine, lubricating and fuel oils, henzine, and nataral gas.“In 1860 Grenville Williams (England) broke down natural rubber by heat and derived from it a liquid with the same chemical composition as rubber, C5HS and he called it Isoprene.In 1879, G.Bouchardat, (France) while experimenting with Isoprene obtained a substance which had elasticity and some of the other properties of rubber, He was the first to suggest that rubber is a polymer, a substance in which the original molecules have linked together to form giant molecules.“The Russians were early workers in synthetic rubber and because of the threat of blockade during the last war continued their work until interrupted by the Revolution.Later the Soviet Government continued the work of the great Russian chemists, Os- tromeslensky, Kondakow and Le- bedeff.: “In 1915 the Germans bullt and operated a synthetic rubber plant but the quality of the product was inferior.” The speaker then gave some of Tn.a fine,‘ various types et synthetic Henry Wickham had X rubber: Butadiene, Styrene, and how the process of ‘’Polymerise- tion” or, ag the speaker simpli- filed the term, ‘the drying or hardening of paint on the side ot a house is polymerization,” takes place.Describing ‘Buna 8’, ‘Butyl’, ‘Neoprene’, and ‘‘’Thiokol’ as the principal forms of synthetic rubber the speaker closed with the wish that the wartime development of synthetic rabber would in PUBLISHED IN â à A EXAMINER, FRIBAY, THIS ADVERTISEMENT “ OF EX-SERVICE.PEOPLE future: O° : The Rotarians stood for a minute’s silence at the suggestion of President-Chairman A.W.Cal- deceased past-presidgnt C.W, Me- Bride.SL Tee An artist confesses he put ten years’ work into & picture he has just sold.Nine of them are said some hy bandit mankint in the lard in memory of.the.recentiy | Support Legion *- Discharged war veterans should get behind the Canadian Legion, “to thelr.own advantage,” according to W.N.Burke, secretary of the Ontario provincial come mand, speaking in Toronto re cently.to have been devated to selling it.THE INTEREST | without medical exami: ‘He sald that: “£ vital part of the Canadian -Legien presranil should be the enrolling of veter:;
