in this he differs from our first two experiments, | the Pheasants, and Bobwhites, which feed mainly on the ground, although there is room for argument, in so far as the phefsant is concerned. The Sharptail may be found in the more open parts of our wooded areas, and does not keep to the open like the Bobwhite, however do not be surprised if one bursts away from under your feet anywhere on the mountain paths, the flight is usually a “straight-away’ though they usually do not fly far and are easy to mark down. The Reason Why Citizens may wonder why the Verdun and District Sportsmen's Association Ine.choose West- mount for their experiments for the propagation of Wildlife and for their information we wish to make it clear that the same opportunity was extended to all Municipalities within the Metropolitan Area. The City Council of Westmount has offered every assistance tot our bird committee, this co-operation is carried further by the keen interest by the citizens, backed with the splendid support of the City Manager Mr.Jarman, and the Supt.Parks Dept.Mr.E.J.Anderson.These, added to near perfect environment, are the main reasons.Greater interest 1s being taken by the Montreal Parks Staff, and the same opportunity is still open to all Municipalities willing to cooperate. The City of Verdun while not suited so well for Game birds has already received the first stocking of Atlantic Salmon Fingerlings (last summer) in the Lachine Rapids at her water front.CITY OF W VITAL MATERIALS NEEDED Batteries, Bed Springd, Carpets, WAR SALVAGE Newspapers, Scrap Iron and Steel, Aluminum, Brass, Lead, Copper, Zinc, Bottles, Rags, Fats, Bones, Metal Foil.MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS ARE: Phonograph Records, Coat Hangers, and Tubes Only) Magazines are also needed as reading matter for the men In uniform. Please leave small quantities beside your garbage for collection.FOR INFORMATION OR SPECIAL COLLECTION CALL ESTMOUNT FOR THE WAR EFFORT ARE: Boilers, Mattresses, Rubber (Tires - Fitzroy 8531 “War Salvage” — ay TRENCH TELEPHONE The drugstore phone booth has nothing on this slit trench shel: ter for a Signal Corps switchboard.Freak Accident Tags Taxi-Tram-Truck A verdict of accidental death was returned.by Coroner Richard Duckett in Coroner’s Court Tues.in the case of Miss Laura Singer, 55, of 248 Wood avenue, West- mount, instantly killed late Monday afternoon in a freak accident, invorving a street car, a taxi and a truck.Evidence showed a street car going east along St.Catherine street ,near Gladstone avenue, Westmount, collide with a taxi also eastbound. The taxi, in turn, struck a truck parked at the curb.Miss Singer is believed to have stepped off the sidewalk into the path of the track which was moved from its position by the impac:.Funeral services were conducted by the Rev.D.Scott, of Knox Crescent Church for Miss Laura Singer, 55, of 248 Wood Avenue, who was accidentally killed on St.Catherine St.West, near Wood Avenue. An employee of The Aluminum Company of Canada since April 22, 1929, Miss Singer was the daughter of the late Mr.and Mrs.Francis J.Singer, and has two brothers, Frank W.Singer, of Paris, Ontario, and Charles Singer, of Portland, Oregon, who survive her.Ceremony was held at the Funeral Chapel of Tees and Co, St.Luke and Towers Streets, Montreal.“Young Married Couples” Group Elect Officers The “Young Married Couples’ ” group met recently and members enjoyed a recreational period of Volley Ball after which a dainty luncheon was served by Mrs, Norman Brown as hostess for the evening, The slate of newly appointed Officers was drawn up, with Keith Charters as President; these columns, saying it was bad grammar. We studied the sentences and concluded it was correct; then we put it up to a professor of English, and he confirmed our opinion. The sentence: “These are the kind (meaning sort, variety, type) who are nice to have az ound.” ; The professor explained his reasoning and concluded : “This splitting of hairs over exact singulars and plurals is not worth while. Many freshman classes kill hours over it and become pedantic over trifles while neglecting major ideas.” Much of the incorrect grammar that is heard in daily speech and encountered in business letters is the result of over-empha- sizing trifles. For example, children are told not to say “It’s me,” although many authorities concede that usage has made the expression permissible.Determined to avoid the use of “me,” the poor kids grow up and insist on saying “between you and I.” The best way to dodge a difficult grammatical construction is to rewrite the sentence in which it occurs. In grammar, as in so many other things, a little knowledge is dangerous.A FIRE WARNING This is the time of year when parents should be reminded to warn their children against lighting fires in the dry grass that covers our vacant lots. Each year the fire department is called a number of times each .day on errands that should not be necessary, valuable fences are burned, and occasionally some youngster obtains butns that necessitate a stay in hospital. The fields are dangerous at this time of year.last year’s grass is dry as timber and ¢an be ignited by a spark.Such grass fires spread rapidly if a wind is blowing, and although we have been comparatively fortunate with such fires in this district, there is always the danger that they will get out of control and ignite buildings in their vicinity.Tae Le f- .- \\ ‘ L "THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1945 NAVY LEAGUE APPEAL The 1945 maintenance ‘appeal of the Montreal division the reason for this complaint.Mostly we hear of keeping up the morale of the boys, and I'm sure we are anxious to do so, But what of the home front maintain their morale except the No one can know what a letter means (or, has waited for one that didn’t” Ever since my fiancee went into service, he has written one each day at.least.I've written twice a day until to-x day, when I've written just one, and it is sitting here before me— I'm not sure I'll mail it.Several weeks ago he left on Mis shakedown cruise, and since then I've had no mail! None at all.“I kept up all right until this week-end, when I guess I just went to pieces. There isn't any morale or anything else left.Just a loneliness. There are no dates for me, except occasionally with some of the girls. But I was satisfied as long as I got those letters.I can’t go on and not hear from him, nor know if things are still the same between us.l've seen service men here forgetting all about the girls they left behind, and the.ones out of the country are marrying foreign girls all the time. It's hard to keep up even a pretense of morale under the circumstances, but the situation could be saved for me and a lot of others, I'm sure, if something could be done about the mail service to and from the boys out there.” V.M.D.Have Faith No news doesn't mean bad aews necessarily, you know.Certainly you shouldn't take it.to mean that your fiancee has fallen in love with someone else— shame! Several accidents can happen to a letter: Ships carrying mail have been sunk, and of course that mail is not retrieved; storms delay letters; censors need time to read them; many a message is written from a front miles away from headquarters. The mail service our Government is supplying is, in my opinions excel- lent. Some letters come through from Italy in five days, some from the Pacific in less than ten.If you haven’t waited for daily letters, only to have a pile of them delivered all at once, you've been very lucky indeed.(As for a shade-down cruise, that’s the best reason for mail being delayed; the ship is being tested in every mechanical unit and foreits overall performance, the boys are just learning about the routine of their stations, their sleep averages, I'm told, about five hours a.night.Onen member of my family wrote his mother just once during that strain, and his girl got not one letter).I know how hard it is not to get panicky when mail doesn't come through. But a girl must Keep the faith—that is the least she can do; remember that if there’s bad news coming, you'li have it fast enough—good news takes longer to travel. And don't let any doubt temper your belief; some boys have failed their girls, but most of them just can't wait to get home and marry.: LJ ¥ * To “Mrs.W.L.H.”: nothing peculiar to your wish to avoid these people you describe. They are shallow and uninteresting; you have nothing in common with them and, naturally, it is difficult to find anything to talk about.Don't let it worry you — they won't criticize you for keeping to yourself. You have your own family, your home and your own friends to occupy your time, and no one should ask you to take on more.Additional Chairmen Committees Named For N.D.G.Library Frolic The Frolic to be held on Saturday evening in aid of the N.D.G.Library for Boys and Girls promises to be an outstanding event.Games, fun and various amusements have been carefully arranged to appeal to all tastes, The following are additional names of chairmen and com- mitties responsible.Mrs.Geo.Wright, ticket convener for the Cote des Neiges and Snowdon Women's Club is being assisted by Mrs.A.Lyle, Mrs, D, W.Heywood, Mrs, E.Sharpe and Mrs, E.Willard, Mrs.A.Crompton, ticket convener for Gilson Home and School Association, is being assisted by Mrs.Sharelli, of 5482 Western Avenue and Mrs.Charles A.Parkinson.Military Whist Subscribers are asked to note very carefully that the military whist, while a part of the Frolic, will take place at St.Augustine’s Hall, under the auspices.of St.Augustine’s of Canterbury.Particulars may be obtained from H, J, Carter, the convener, DE.1718.Conveners for the evening include: Mrs.G.Langley, St.Augustine» Catholic Women's League; — > , Turning back the pages of history almost 2,000 years, the screen unfolded Cecil B.DeMille’s “The Sign of the Cross” last night at the Seville United Theatre. The modernized version of the great Paramount spectacle is as awe-inspiring today as it was when first filmed. The timeliness of the epic drama can be well understood in the light of Hitler's brutal conquest of the weaker European nations. In 64 A.D., too, a dictatorial emperor, Nero, also had designs for world conquest. He fiddled while Rome burned — laughed at the anguish his devilish devices brought upon a persecuted minority, the Christians. In starring roles are Charles Laughton, as Nero; Frederic March, as Marcus Superbus, pre- feot of Rome; Claudette Colbert as the wanton Poppaea, wife of the emperor and Elissa Landi, as Mercia, devotee of Christ's principles, The inspirational story depicts the wickedness of Rome Star Cast Returns Again For “Sign of The Cross” and its governors but also tells of the courage of an ever-growing number of Christians who suffer untold outrages rather than give up Christianity.Marcus meets Meréla for.the first time while protectfhg her aged uncle and friends, fdllowers of Christ, from the ruffians who seek to strike them down. The prefect disperses the mob and sees Mercia safely off. When he visits her later, Marcus finds himself deeply in love with ‘the Christian girl, incurring Poppaea’s wrath. The latter persuades Nero to pardon Marcus if the prefect converts Mercia to the Roman way of life. His attempt fails and the Christian band, along with Mer- || cia, is led to the arena where sure death awaits them.Marcus can contain himself no longer upon seeing his love walk fearlessly ahead and, joining her in the death march, finds that he, too, is imbued with the spirit of Christianity. The final, climatle scene brings a heart-warming and spiritual lift to the audience, Coming on April 12th, the “Ice Frolics of 1945” presented by the Montreal Figure Skating Club will conclude the winter season for the Forum and will end another sue “Ice Frolics Of 1945” Coming To The Forum cessful year for J.M.G.Lockerby and this progressive association.Former Junior Canadian Champion Suzanne Thouin, vivacious as ever, 1s again among the headlin- FEATURED IN "ICE FROLICS OF 1945" The Misses Kay and Eva Lopdell, of the Minto Skating Club of Ottawa, one of the feature acts of Montreal Figure Skating Club extravaganza to be held at the Forum April 12th, * Hote gt / bB great story by the author of “AI This, And Heaven Too.” né i NC (St.Catherine at Guy Street) WILLIAM POWELL and MYRNA LOY “in “The Thin Man Goss Home.” Repeat, RONALD COLMAN in “THR PRISONER oF ZENDA,” ‘with Madeleine Carroll, Doug.Fairbanks, Jr.Starts SATURDAY until Tuesday WAVE Saturday Evening Post Serial " WARD BOND GEORGE “cxoer” HAVES AUBREY LONG» ELISABETH RISDON .DN DOUGLAS He's a lone wolf, afraid of ernery females … .but when she fakes à shot at kim, he’s got to find oat what's cooking In this cactas cookie’s heart even if it kills him!
