When all trecked home again, tired and happy, everybody decided another jaunt to St.Helen's Island would have to be.Even with sunburns and tiredness all declared it a gala day.The leaders were Ron George, fom Sparrow, Peter Swift, and the following boys dove or jumped from the third level of the high fower—Peter Swift, Tom Parrott, Kizzy Goode, Ian Beckett and Tom Sparrow.FRIDAYS HAPPENINGS Assembly was cut short.Unfortunately the speaker was unable to come, so the time was absorbed in giving out points, announcements and news.During morning swim Terry Brookfield swam out of the non-swimmer class by crossing the pool under bis own steam, The afternoon brought another trip to the Westmount Mountain where the Indians defeated the Settlers in a seek and find and band to hand encounter. The afternoon was hot so one or two tired boys sat in the shade. The idea caught, because in ten minutes every boy was doing likewise.Of course, the stories they heard helped a little.Yes indeed, ihey spent à good hour listening lo stories and just resting. The swim that followed provided a happy ending to a grand day.SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MONDAY The gang had its usual swim Saturday but the hig event was ithe week-end trip to Perrot.Sixteen boys, under the leadership of “Doc” Kinrade, made the trip.Big and small, the lads that went were:—Peter Swift, Ron George, Bob Gough, Laurie Bennett, Terry Brookfield,” Paul Van der Slice, Michael Hewton, Jan Beckett, .Peter Holland, John Nourse, Vincent Roberts, Dickie Grant, Peter Sykes, Kizzy Goode, Bob Coffey and Bob Sherlock. The boys know now what five miles represent, Many tired feet plodded into Camp in time for a pwim and supper Saturday after- noon, That night everyone elected.to sleep on the hay in: fhe- barn, but, after ine thing and another, some ended up by sleeping out- doors—roughly three hours. The rest of the time was ‘spent in noise and fun, Sunday wäs a quiet day.Everyone had the opportunity of resting or seeing what they wanted around camp.Of coursé the camp fire at night was a big thing. Some boys went for a moonlight swim as well. And everone slept better the second night.Monday everyone had the usual scramble to-find everything, pack ‘and ‘be ready to pull out for home. The: train conducior was pretty good to us for we had a coach to ourselves all the way.If you want to know what it means not to drink for an hour—ask the boys.TUESDAY'S HAPPENINGS Tuesday didn’t see all the boys on the job. Some were quite tired | after the long week end.For all that 25 boys went over to Belmont Park for the day.Yeu should see the bunch in action. They aren't all angels by any means, but they are a grand lot to know, WEDNESDAY’S HAPPENINGS The morning hours were spent in getting new teams under way.The teams for the week are captained by Peter Swift, Tom Par- rott, and Ken Parrott and the vice-captains are Gillles Ross, Paul Manson, Ted Hough. There are ten boys in each team.A fourth team is led by Andrew Coté and is not fully formed yet, but by Thursday it is expected to have that one and two more teams completed. The boys spent the afternoon on another treasure hunt in¥West- mount Park.Peter Swift laid the {rain and the winners were Brian Gallery, Peter Holland, Jimmy Morgan, Michael Hewton, David Bunclark, Gillies Ross, Jack Don- nelly, Barnard Downes, Leslie Syvret, Paul Lavigne and John Swift. All in all it has been a very happy week for all.Playground Plan (Continued from Page 1) ably be continued on with another match to be played at a later date.Basketball and volleyball leagues will be organized at Stay- nor next week, it is expected to have two teams from Westmount Park and a similar number from Staynor to compete in these sports. The idea is to have a game of each sport going on at the same time, when the games are finished, the groups will change courts and continue on with the other game.Thursday nights has been ‘suggested for these games.nmFn-v rv.ra atc(m sports etao à Prince Albert Great enthusiasm and keen competition have prevailed in the book drive at this playground, the two teams under captains Donald Hendry and Jon Powell have been canvassing the neighborhood with steady thoroughness. The boys and girls on the teams include Clive Ellis, Celia Benett, Ian Grant, Gail Conlin, will be greeted with wide open ears.’ The minimum requirement for entry into all faculties is a total of 650 on the junior matriculation examinations. That merely means that an application without ahead with 1086 points while Donald Hendry's aggregation have 879.Thus the two teams are evenly matched with just a couple of days to go.The teams are marked according to the classification of books brought in, hard covered books for example are worth quite a bit more than ordinary magazines, A sand modelling contest took place last week which proved of interest. In the first group of children, seven years and over, honours went to Jon Powell, Ronnie Balnninger and Heather The second group, for those under seven.years, first place went to Robin Binmore, second place to David Nelson and third place to Ian Grant.Other participants were Judy Harshaw, Diana Currie, Toni Powell, Donald Hendry, Michael! Hatcher, and he intimated that a student must ‘Lave high marks in at least three suhjects if his application for admission is going to be met with an affirmative response. The doctor is chiefly interested in barring students who have little or no chance of passing their university courses. With an ever- increasing number of servicemen taking advantage of the government’s offer of a free college education, the doctor can afford to be a little harsh, Science students will have a tougher time than any, for requirements for entrance to faculty of science will be higher than for any other faculty. The doctor aid not want to be more specific than that, but he did say that one new method of assessing candidates has been adopted, with the co-operation of principals of all the schools that have rupplied McGill with pupils; in the past. The principals are being asked to till out forms which will give university officials an idea of the aptitudes and general conduct of junior and matriculation students. The forms will be treated as very confidential, will be seen by no more than three members of the McGill faculty, and will be burned as early as possible. No mention of an increase in the number of marks required by Jewish students has been mentioned, the assistant dean ‘said.VACATION ITEMS Bob Grant boarded the S.S.Norman P.Clement, upper St.Lawrence and Great together with the orator’s reaction to the mentality of his hearers formed the theme of an address made by Murray R.Chip- man, when he addressed members of the Westmount Rotary on the subject “The Indispensable Audience.” “Speaking in a humorous manner which was high-lighted by many amusing anecdotes which the speaker employed in deft manner to illustrate his points, Mr.Chipman emphasized the dangers surrounding the public speaker who fails to study and analyse the particular audience which he is addressing._ Certain rules and principles must be followed at all times by with any group, the speaker said, the public speaker in dealing if the reaction of the indispensable audience is to be such as will add to the prestige of the speaker and ensure him a future City’s Executive Committee, asking that the city’s by-laws be amended to limit the sale of gasoline to the hours of 7 a.m.to 7 p.m.week days, with closing an hour earlier on .Sundays.The idea, born of, the wartime experience of.the vendors, is a good one.It .could be extended to many other lines of business with considerable benefit to the busi- - nesses concerned, and no great hardship on the public.Competition may be the life of trade, but too much of it carries service to the public to ridiculous extremes, with no benefit to anyone. For instance, in pre-war days in this district, the competition among shops selling .magazines, tobacco, soft drinks, ice cream, and so forth forced them all to remain open far longer than necessary, to employ help that wiped out the profits, and made business a futile ‘struggle for a livelihood. One local merchant told us the other day that in spite of the fact the government has rationed, directly and indirectly, almost everything he sells, he ¥s doing better than in the piping days of peace.“In those days,” he said, “I had to hire a clerk to take the orders over the phone, and I had six messenger bovs delivering them.A customer would phone for a packet of chiclets, and nothing else, and we'd have to deliver it.It sounds foolish, but if we re- tused, the trade would have gone elsewhere. We had to do it to stay in business.Today, “we're all working about the same hours. We don’t hire more than ene messenger.People come to the store to buy their smokes and soft drinks, because that’s the only way they can get them home. What we've lost by shortage of merchandise, we've more than made up by the cut in the overhead.” That story can be repeated in almost every line of local retail business. It's to the ad- qi came, ai Jury, vantage © of all the stores to get together and maintain the advantages the warhas brought: them, And the civif authorifies Rhould help by enforcing laws thdt would prevent compe tion keeping stores open more than a ome able number of hours each day.SOUNDS.LIKE HOME Quite a fuss was Kicked up iA, London’ ‘fast week when it: was discovered that thousands of names had been left off the voters lists, Among those! omitted were Prime Minister Winston Churchill, leader of the Conservative Party; Sir Archibald Sinclair, leader of the Liberal Party, and Harold Laski, economist of the Labour Party. Also, thousands of armred service voters were said to have been left off.Churchill had to make a special trip back to the British metropolis to have his name added, interrupting temporarily his election campaign tour, GRACE AND AVOIRDUPOIS Exceptional grace seems to be a character: istic of people who are excessively overweight, writes William Feather. The big boys and girls, who carry from fifty to a hundred pounds of surplus avoirdupois, can waltz like nobody's business. We have-a theory about this.As the big people put on more and more weight they are compelled to acquire an extraordinary sense of balance; otherwise they would topple over. This hourly and daily practice in equilibrium gives them feet as light as tight-rape walkers.Skinny people, who incidentally often have long feet, usually stand as firm as pyramids, and move like sleds on dry earth, Remember this the next time you are invited to a party.GEOGRAPHICAL ODDITIES Your friends won’t believe you but you will be correct if you insist that Reno, Nevada, is farther west than Los Angeles.Reno is about a hundred miles closer to Asia
