WELCOMES THEATRE Business men in the Eastern Business Section of Westmount are elated with the future business outlook in that area of West- mount now that the prospect of the erection of a Motion Picture Theatre project is being seriously considered for that district. The attraction of a large number of people passing through the district, going to and fram a Theatre, night and day, should prove a real incentive for new an improve shopping facilities.Shop keepers will have more equal opportunities for trade—a condition which has long been desired in that shopping centre.Judging from the numerous requests for store premises in that section of late it is felt that, with the erection and operation of the new Theatre, a very complete shopping centre will soon follow to better and more adequately serve the Westmount shoppers. The Business Association of Westmount has strongly advocated the policy of more freedom of enterprise for retailers and opportunities equal, at least, to other business communities in surrounding municipalities, “DEFENCE OF DEMOCRACY The public is being bombarded these days by appeals to support all kinds of organizations, notably ones of political character calling themselves “leagues” or “societies” of “organizations” for the defence of democracy”, “the protection of liberty” and so forth and so on.Most of these organizations are of membership, of little or no influence, with an axe to grind, and liable to be considerable of a nuisance to the bigger organizations in whose care the real defence of our liberties in this country rests. The most effective defenders of democracy in Canada are the men and women who are working at the job—the members of our three national political parties, Democracy is safe in their hands, and it would be considerably more to the «couñtry’s benefit it the self-styled small-scale “defenders” united with one or other of the political parties and exercised their influence where it would do some good, As they operate at present, they are continually embarrassing the authorities by advocating measures carrying a popular appeal, but which are too far advanced to be practical and for which those in authority don’t want to take the responsibility, but for which, nevertheless, they have to bear the criticism if they refuse to act.THE HAPPIEST MOMENTS In his book, “The Importance of Living,” Lin Cutang enumerates thirty-three happy moments which two seventeenth century Chinese were able to recall one 20,000,000 people.Today it is the language of 250,000,000, and with 60,000,000 who are ‘able to use it sufficiently for business purposes some believe that English “bids fair to become the (Contributed by Westmount Historical Association) CLARKE AVENUE Clarke Avenue is one of the best-known sireets in Westmount. It runs from opposite 4292 St.Catherine Street, West, north to north of the Boulevard, ending in the circle called Clarke Place.“ The name of the Clarke family, with which Clarke Avenue is indelibly associated, if so rich in historical connotations for the citizens of Westmount, and, for that matter, for the people of the whole Dominion, that no drastic condensation ot available material will be attempted.Rather, in order to give the readér the benefit of the interesting accounts that are to be found, this treatment of Clarke Avenue will extend over several instalments, The two principal and interrelated sources to be drawn upon are the standard and semi- classic work of the eminent American author Washington Irving, ‘Astoria’, published in 1836, and “Old Montreal: John Clarke: His Adventures, Friends and Family” published by Miss Adele Clarke of Westmount in 1906.Lengthy quotations will be presented from each.Miss Adele Clarke's contains a preface written in 1906 by Dr.W.D.Lighthall, distinguished Canadian litterateur and historian, whom the West- mount Historical Association endeavours to honor as its Honorary President. The date is to be borne in mind, as some of the conditions then mentioned as existing have now passed into history.Dr.Lighthall says of Miss Clarke's work: — “The ensuing monograph will be found of considerable interest to those who take pleasure in reading of the early fur traders or of the past three generations of Montrealers. To them the name of Clarke is familiar.Washington Irving refers to John Clarke in ‘Astoria’, where he connects him with the story of the famous Silver Cup, and attaches some blame to him for a certain alleged imprudence of disposition in treating with Indians. But it must be remembered that Irving wrote without personal knowledge, and the material in possession of Mr.Clarke's family vindicates him completely.IIe seems to have been a very energetic, courageous and capable leader. While the French Government possessed Canada, it
