and lastly, the curious Mr.Muckeriji (Dan Seymour), ponderous Hindu and follower of a mysterious Far Eastern philosophy, How Denard meets these enemies and outwits them through a series of hair- raising encounters that include at least one brutal attack on his own person, the heartless murder of an innocent little girl who tries to aid him, ard a breath-taking pursuit and escape through the labyrinth of blackest London streets, makes for as exciting an evening - of entertainment as has cnme out of Hollywood this season, STARTED ‘AT BOTTOM Alan Ladd, soon _to be seen in Paramount's “Two Years Before the Mast,” received his introduc.‘tion to movie-making as a “grip,” or laborer, at Warner Bros, studio. He didn't put on greasepaint until four years later.Much of the location footage Speirs-Miller Revue Is Tops The ‘Standing Room Only” sign was hung out again Friday night at Victoria Hall when the Betty Speirs-Peter Miller School of Dancing presented their Springtime Revue. To say that this show was better than its predecessors would be like painting the lily, but such was the case. From the rising of the curtain on the ‘“‘Babes of the Wood” in which the tiny tots enjoyed themselves to of the “Ballet of Spring” by the Senior Group was one long programme of uninterrupted enjoyment. As is usual with the Speirs- Miller show, variety was the keynote of entertainment. There was never a dull moment throughout, which can be well imagined when Peter Miller had as guest artists Johnny Coy’s sister, Patricia Ogilvie, starring in the Highland scene, with Piper Jock Rae in attendance and supported by a background of two lines of the School's best dancers in highland costume. For exceptional work, but in the tap line mention is made of Claudia Lattin, Patsy and Billy Lord, Beverley Houghton, and the two stars of the McGill University “Red and White Revue”, Gerry MacKinnon and Moira Wedder- spoon, who did “Song of India" with Mr.Miller, A smart example of showmanship was “Me and My Shadow” with Peter Miller and his very smal] ‘partner, Marcia ‘Palmer, which was precision personified, while Jean MacMillan’s Irish Jig received an ovation.Something unusual was added in a group for the boys entitled ‘Home on the Range”, in which these little fellows all dressed in cowboy costume had themselves a grand time. Here was had first taste of Peter Miller's latest discovery, Ben Hannen, who literally pulled the house down in his beautiful singing of “Home on the Range”.; In the artistic ballet (chore- | ography by Betty Speirs) mention must be made of Connie Boe for her “Dying Swan”, Emily Ann Robertson, Janet Fleming and a very smart artist, Sheila Edwards, who had to do her number “Easter Bonnet” twice to satisfy her audierce.Helen Holbrooke’s contribution to this number deserves mention. In the Junior classes the outstanding artists were Carroll Guerin, Joan White- house, Sonia Weintraub and Velerie Davies.Betty Speir's young assistant, Therese Daly, was prominent throughout the evening especially when she teamed up with Mr.Miller in “Stardust” and “Waltz Exotic”.This young lady certain- Iy has a future.Altogether a splendid evening’s entertainment, but the entertainment was too long, considering the “Standing Room Only” and’ made Speirs-Miller run their annual recital in two editions because this show is certainly too big to satisfy everyone at one performance.; like little song of the Grasshopper Sparrow, somewhat a rarity in Canada. But it is more apt to be the sound made by the Savannah Sparrow, in which case we will be undecided whether the musician be near or far, for he is a ventriloquist. If close, we will hear the “Tsip-tsip-you" that in troduces the buzz, and the final syllable “you”.The beautiful White-crowned Sparrow with its lovely song, the friendly little Chipping Sparrow, and the aristocratic Tree Sparrow should not be left off our list. But the White-throated Sparrow has one of the most wonderful songs of our northern woods. The tone is pure and clear.Whether heard from a distance or near at hand we are able to make out the exact words, ‘‘Sweet, sweet, Canada, Canada, Canada.” Surely this bird should be our national symbol.Do warblers warble?Recreation Precautions Greater safety in swimming, bathing, boating and other water sports with the importance of learning to swim will be one of the chief campaigns to be launched shortly for water safety according to a statement issued by the Province of Quebec Safety League.During 1945 most of the lives lost could have been saved if proper care had been taken and now was the time to make as.certain as possible that the toll of unnecessary death would be halted in its present shocking rise declared the League. The League in an appeal to the public requests that all observe one or two safety precautions in never swimming alone; before diving make sure the water is deep enough and ‘there are no hidden rocks; use a boat, rope or pole to help a person who is in distress in the water; pay strict attention al all warning signs; atay out of the water during a thunderstorm; wait until you have eodled off and your food has digested before goliig into the water, Church Softball League To Meet Tonight At 8.00 The church section of the West- mount Municipal Softball League will hold a meeting Tuesday at the office in the greenhouse, Four young peoples’ group have stated their intentions of entering teams namely Calvary, St.Andrews United, Westmount Baptist and Church of the Advent. In all probability games will be played eacff Tuesday evening at Westmount Park with two games slated for each week, Present plans are to have the teams composed of six boys and three girls. The ruling will probably state that no more than six boys can be used at any one time so that more than three girls can get in the game if necessary. Also in mind is the idea to have each of the groups act as hosts once a month and at the conclusion of the games, all of the teams wil go to that church and participate in social recreation for the rest of the evening.Other forms of entertainment are RICH GARDEN SOIL For Sale $3.00 55:00 Single Load Double Load DExter 5198 R.AUBIN 6125 Upper Lachine Rd.also envisioned for the group, If any other churches, other than the four mentioned above, are interested in entering the league, it 1s asked to have a representative at tonight's meeting which is called for 8.00 o'clock. The greenhouse is situated directly behind Victoria Hall and fs in Westmount Park.Information may be obtained from Recreation Supervisor Jim Me Cor- Complete assortmeut of No.1 Summer, Summer, early Fall, and Winter varieties of Apple Trees, Woods county, Minn., cannot be reached by land without going through Canada. It lies nearer the North Pole than any other section of the United States.pe EN EN * LAWRENCE H:V Currant Bushes (black, red and whi mick at FI, 1929, Grape Vines, Blueberrics, Raspbee ” and Strawberries.«> One portion of Lake of the Price List on request 28 ‘Tolçhone *LAncaster 4; x ge x Cl RK = AND "MONTREAL GREENHOUSES AND NURSERIES 4509 COTE DES NEIGES ROAD TELEPHONE AT.1125 St.Catherine Mount Royal Hotel & Guy St.Peel St.Garden Plants e meals al Open during sence.El RINET, i car, 14 Reward.V PROPER DIATE detached p, heated pces, mus , $16,000, ble interes p EL.354 HAVE To g 6-9 rog ancy Oct 00.We" te action.Ww.oan 201 venti FORTS, € “One reason Why 132,000 Borrowers Preferred the | oM in 1945 ‘There are 2 lot of reasons why 132,000 Canadians chose to borrow for personal pure poses at the Bank of Montreal last year, just as there ace 2 lot of ressons why well over s million people choose this bank as theie depository.Perhaps the most important reason is that, here at the Bank of Montreal, they can obtain personal loans at the lowest cost.Nowhere can you borrow more cheaply or on more favourable terms than at the B of M.And nowhere will you find formality and red tape so Cut away.- Because of the low cost, convenient terms, and the friendly, helpful approach of our people, you, too, will enjoy desling with the B.of M when you have need to borrow money.A point to remember is: when you ask for a loan at the B of M, you do not ask a favours.BRANCHES IN WESTMOUNT Westmount Branch, Greene &.Western Aves.-A.D.HORNE, Me Claremont Ave.& ‘Sherbrooke St.- =
