* * + After many years às an automobile driver, I have finally reached the conclusion That the drivers of milk wagons are privileged people. To prove my point, here are a few of my observations: When I come to an intersection where there is a “Stop” sign, 1 stop.Do milk drivers? No, they keep right on going. When I wish to go back in the direction from whence I came, I make a U-turn at the next intersection or go around the block.Do milk drivers? No, they turn in the middle of the block. When I wish to park my car, I draw over to the curb.Do milk drivers? No, they park half-way out on the street. When I come out of a lane onto the street, I drive cautiously and make sure that nothing is coming either way.Du milk drivers? No, they allow their steeds to dash out into the traffic and then both horse and driver smile sardonically at the sound of screeching brakes. When I am confronted by a red traffic signal, I stop.I fret impatiently, perhaps, but I stop.Do milk drivers? Not always.Only vesterday I watched a driver cheerfully adding up his accounts while his horse jogged sedately past a red light.See- what I mean? They're pri- viliged people, that’s what they are.ar *% # Slip of the weak.Credit this to a freshman reporter writing his report on a Parents’ Night gathering of Boy Scouts and their Mothers and Fathers. We quote, “Last night, Mr.Blank spoke to a large number of enthusiastic * fathers and expectant mothers,” unquote. No comment.* * » Won't you join us in congratulating the young ladies in our Classified Advertising Department?Last week the Examiner published the largest number of classifieds in its twelve-year history.Low bows in the direction of our classified addicts, Miss Evelyn Mec- Kinnon and Miss Margo Murray.Use Examiner classifieds, they get results.(Advt.) % * * Betty Speirs, of the Speirs-Miller School of Dancing, is reported to be progressing favourably after a recent operation.* * * One of the most unfortunate incidents of Hallowe'en, happened on Prince Albert Avenue last Thursday. Two boys aged 7, were making their way homeward after about the homes of their friends, clutching their treats and a small quantity of money they had been given, when two persons dressed as girls, who were judged to be about 15 years of age, caught the two lads and forcibly took their treats and money. The boys were heartbroken and proceeded homeward in tears.A local policeman met them, heard their plight and gave them each a quarter as some compensation, but their evening had still been ruined. It would seem there should be an age limit placed on Hallowe'en masqueraders, otherwise it offers the criminally minded an opportunity to get some on the job training, early in life.* æ wo.Congratulations to our Sports Editor, Red Fisher, he is covering the Q.R.F.U Junior Football games a pleasant evening masquerading for the Standard.Scouts BY REG & Cubs GROOME Sunday, your reporter was lucky enough to be included ‘it a party going on a trip to Camp Tamaracouta, where all had a sp'endid time.there unfortunately being no one present from Westmount Area. Most of the boys who went were from the west-end or ine city, We arrived at camp just before noon and spent the next two hours wandering around to the many camp-sites.We observed numerous small trees which the camp staff planted during September, ahd lots of new grass coming up where grass seed had been planted earlier. These are only a few of the improvements the camp committee are working on to have ready for next year. The wharf was all torn up and work is well ahead on building a new one, something which is very necessary.Another new feature is a small building next to the fence (marking the end of camp property) behind the Artificer's Shed which will in future hold all inflammable goods in camp, such as gas, coal-oil, paints, ets.Previously, these were all stored in the Artificer's Shed.- After exploring the camp thoroughly, we made a small fire (no mean feat in Sunday's rain) where we cooked dinner and warmed ourselves.Shortly after, we set out on the return trip to Montreal, going by way of Morin Heights. This was probably the last.time any of us will see Tamara- couta until after the thaw-out next spring, for the roads will soon be closed.' $1.00 half-year, Authorized as 2nd Class Mail; Post Office Dept.Ottawa FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1946 UNWISE TO WAIT In the closing days of last week, officers of an independent organization, which makes a specialty of accurately measuring public opinion, became curious about the reception which Canadians are giving to the new Canada Savings Bonds. They set their large and widespread staff to work in all provinces to find out, among other things, what percentage of the three million buyers of Victory Loan Bonds and War Savings Certificates had bought the new bonds to date; how many of the remainder intended to buy.One of the more interesting facts which this survey uncovered was that an estimated 21% of former Victorx Loan buyers in urban areas had not yet bought because they were waiting for a salesman to call; and in the rural areas an estimated 11% were also waiting for a salesman. This proved of particular interest to those who planned-and are giving direction to the sale of Canada Savings Bonds, in view of the fact that such wide publicity has been given on this very point. While there are a number of gales- men from investment houses in the field, they cannot begin to make the extensive canvass of individuals, particularly in rural areas, which was made by the sales force employed in Victory Loans. The odds are overwhelming that if this 21% in cities and 11% in rural districts continue to wait for salesmen, they will never buy a new bond. Two other features of the survey show that 27% of those in the rural areas who have yet to buy are going to send in their applications by mail, and that 28% of those in country areas who bought Victory Bonds have not yet decided to secure a new bond and are classified under the column, “Might buy.” A good tip for those in the first group would be, “Act now on your good intentions,” and for the second group, “End your indecision and buy.You obviously stand to benefit yourself, since it is the finest investment available today. In case of THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1946 need you can turn it into cash at 100 cents on the dollar, plus interest, at any time.” COMING TRAFFIC JAMS The information, made public recently, that there are ten thousand automobiles in downtown Montreal for every one that can be parked, makes one wonder what is going to happen when all the new cars get on the road. The traffic problem a year or so from now is going to be ghastly.Today, it takes the better part of a half-hour to get from Bleury street to the corner of Peel and Sherbrooke, via Dorchester, during the five o'clock rush; what it will be like when fifty thousand additional cars get on the roads in the Montreal ared can hardly be imagined. We talk about spending millions on a subway system as a solution. That will get folks to and from work faster, but it won't take any cars off the road. The traffi¢ will be just as bad, parking will be just as difficult, with or without subways.Men who can do something about it do not seem to know the solution, which should be obvious — make cars smaller! Present-day automobiles are foolishly inflated — about six or seven feet longer than necessary, some of them more than that. The additional length is unnecessary, being composed of “gingerbread” as they call it in the trade.Cars are built long to make people think they are getting a big car, a lot for their money.Forty percent of available parking space could be saved, or to put it another way forty percent more cars could be parked in the same cub space if the gingerbread was stripped off.Make cars smaller, by legislation if necessary, or else city auto travel will become almost impossible.COMPLIMENTARY, BUT UNPOPULAR One day we complimented a newspaper writer on the production of a forthright editorial in which certain individuals and corporations were named for merit and extolled for their contribution to the local welfare. The man smiled wanly and said the article had caused more jealousy and discontent than anything he had written for months. Those not mentioned in the roundup were sore, and said so.Those mentioned kept quiet, no doubt concluding that the nice- words said about them were inadequate. The public often wonders why so much editorial writing is double-talk and hash. The foregoing is the explanation.About the only time a provincial newspaper can really go to town is when a man dies.WEEKLY REVIEW By LEWIS MILLIGAN TWO PICTURES OF RIBBENTROP ther I had had a comfortable journey.I turned to Dr.Schmidt and said in English that I had lost all facility in speaking German and to be good enough to interpret my reply to the Minister.“I set forth the nature of my mission, emphasizing that my government was solely interested in Ribbentrop was perhaps the most pathetic-looking feature in the big dock of Nurnberg. There was some attempt on the part of the rest of the accused to preserve their old military or diplomatic dignity, although, as one correspondent remarked, they all had that I had no proposals to offer a “guilty look.” There was, however, no remnant and bearing of Ribbentrop of that arrogant dignity which he assum- {put forward on the part of the ed when he was acting as lackey and diplomatic adviser to Hitler.United States. As he sat there in the dock he was not only deflated physically, but his face was a picture of utter despair.Look on that picture and then on this of the high-and-mighty |over two hours, except at the re- the establishment of permanent peace in Europe and had no interest in any temporary truce.I concluded by making it very clear left in the face |and no commitments whatever to Ribbentrop then commenced to : speak and never stopped for well quest of the interpreter from time Herr von Ribbentrop, as presented % by Sumner Welles in his book, to time to translate the preceding “Time for Decision,” in which he tells of his mission to Europe in 1940 to see if there was any means of stopping the war, “I arrived 1n Berlin,” says Welles, “in the early morning of March 1.Almost the first thing I saw, as I drove down the familiar Unter den Linden to the Hotel Ad- lon, was a group of Polish prisoners, under armed guards, shoveling snow from the streets.“The German government had permitted no word of my arrival to appear in the German press. The time of my reception by Hit- #3 NSS SALLY'S, SALLIES portion of his discourse. The Minister sat with his arms extended on the sides of his chair and his eyes continuously closed. The pomposity land absurdity of his manner could not be exaggerated. One could only assume that he envisioned himself as the Delphic oracle.” Compare this pompous and Olympian Ribbentrop, in all his glory at Berlin in 1940, with the miserable, cowed figure sitting in the criminals’ dock at Nurnberg in 1946.How are the mighty fallen! -Breitman’s - Gifts That Are Different Today as never before the Antique shops are the mecca for collectors of beautiful objects of art. Here you will find priceless pieces that will never be replaced.À visit to S.Breitman’s antique shop, 2000 Peel St, at the corner of Burnside, will substantiate this, as you will find people here from all over the city and without, searching for “ pieces of china, or silver, ete.that the stores will never show again.I know of no better place where you may pick up just the present you may have been looking for. When visiting this shop do not rush through as you may miss some priceless article.Due to a limited space Mr.Breitman has had to crowd his shop, so that it is very easy to overlook a piece that may be very valuable.Yesterday I was looking at a very rare set of Meis- senware plates and uomports. They had bands of delicate filigree, and the centres were cream with pale flowers. Then there is a silverplated soup tureen which is very useful. There are also several cut glass bowls, with the diamond ‘design. These bowls half filled with water and with small flat candles floating in them, appear very decorative on a glass reflector. There is a great demand now for the old French-Canadian pine furniture, and you will find several interesting pieces here.Remember the old fashioned wooden wash basin stands that we used to see in country houses?Do you know that they make very attractive children’s desks?Breitman's have a few that have been waxed and are ready to use. There is a lovely console table copied from one of an old style that you will find very attractive. If you have any old silver or china that you may want to disposu of, call HA.1379 and Mr.Breitman will be pleased to call on you.The Little Tots In a short time the children’s dept.at Holt-Renfrew Co., corner of Sherbrooke and Mountain, will have a beautiful new section, when the new addition to the store is finished. But, meanwhile let me describe what they have to offer for the well dressed Miss.I think it is hard to beat a pretty smocked dress, and you will love the plaids, represented by the three clans, Cameron, Buchanan, and Prince Charles. They are made of the very finest of gingham, in sizes seven to ten.For little Miss six months are some dainty blues and pinks smocked on very fine cotion, and I'm sure this is pre- , war material, it is so fine.If one desires the warmer type, the viyella flannel is so practical Follow her every week for helpful hints in your shopping.Gerry will answer all inquiries.GERRY'S CHATTER COLUMN Copyright 71616.2 cal for our climate.By the way this is tl.e only store where I have seen these. They are beautifully made, hand smocked and with very full skirts. You will be pleased wih the little extra tucks that have been added along the back of the sleeve, so as to provide extra room if the dress becomes too small. They come in brown, burgandy, navy and green.I thougl.t these dresses extra smart and they will also stand lots of wear.I was particularly interested in the reasonable prices of these frocks, as many of them were below what I have noted in other stores. You will also find some other articles that you have been looking for down town. For the newly arrived baby, what could be more comfy than a white goatskin carriage robe in the bag style. These have just arrived from England. With one of these over a little tot, one could be sure that the coldest weather would not penetrate.I also noticed some Kenwood bags in white or pink, witlr a zipper up the front.lion Silks If any of you ladies are visiting The C.S.L.Gift Shop at 1480 Sherbrooke St.W., near Mackay, be sure and glance into the show cases along side the stairs as you enter the shop. The - contain the most exquisite Italian lingerie. They are real silk with all hand made embroidery. They come in sets of three, nightie, slip, and pantie, and in colours of pink, blue, and chalk white. For the ultra sophisticated, there are, also from Italy, a negligee and nightie made of black silk chiffon sprinkled with pink silk appliqued stars. The workmanship on both these sets is something we have not seen for years. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary in children's tops you will be delighted with the fine selection here. There is Mr.and Mrs.Bun- nie Rabbit made of soft wool with real bunnie fur for the head, toes, and hands, even to the carrot it Mr.Bunnie’s pocket. Then there ': the little English girl and her fair haired brother. The details in these English dolls are worth noting.I am sure some little girl would be delighted with them. The child who likes animals will be thriil- ed with the old brown lion, lafge in size, and very natural looking.I'm sure anyone would love the life size white Cairn terrier, made of pure wool and washable and having an adjustable head.Miss Morton showed me one of their adjustable book rests that they have just received. They are made of walnut and can be used while reading in bed or sitting at the table. The two metal tabs in front can be used for holding the page open.” For the lady who likes to read and knit these are just the thing.I believe they are very popular in England.America's first street lights were pine knots, placed in iron baskets and lighted By night watchmen, about 1795.All men are interested in clinging meeting on Friday afternoon in Victoria Hall of the Notre Dame de Grace Women's Club, when fine furs, sophisticated gowns for the dinner and dance, casuais for young folks and some stunning ensembles including outfits from London and New York were modelled on the stage and runway to the lilting music of Norton (Buddy) Payne at the organ.Christopher Ellis, the popular radio commentator, presided at the microphone most succe:s- fully. To Christopher Ellis’ amusing chitchat, the curtains parted and the first model tripped out in a coat, exemplifying the tendency this year to use fur on fur, wita a narrow shawl collar of stone marten on a Persian lamb dress coal with deep peplum, by Maxi- milien.A coat of wild mink, with luxurious soft balloon sleeves and swinging full back gave one a warm feeling just to see it (though probably its price would señd chills down the spine) Something pretty nifty had to go with this coat—and something did—a creamy beige evening dress.gently form-fitting at the back and exquisitely draped in front, with slit skirt.A narrow sequin belt in gold was the per- fect touch to complete the creation. Then a Chinese mink full length coat topped a Peter Russel tailored suit of mauve, a hat with a great chou of feathers completing this outfit.Applause greeted coats of Australian opossum, silky bon mouton, silver muskrat (a great favorite) a Persian lamb stroller, pliable nutria (another pet) and a natural fitch with deft insets of dark fur at the hemline Local Singing Tutor Showed Early Talent Signor Francisco Manetfa was born in Bordeaux, France, of Italian parents. His mother was a noted opexa singer, and his father an accomplished violinist. At the age of 16, musicians and critics who heard young Manetta in his native town, knew he was the possessor of a rich and fine voice.Immediately his parents had him study with great Italian masters, Maestro Francese- co Carbonne and Pietro Vallen. His first appearance at the Milan Grand Opera was brilliant. It was in the interpretation of the first roles in Cavalleria Rusticana, Il Trovatore, La Forza de Destino and Pagliacci that DON'T BORROW FROM personal | = BA) UE À QU find their way to the identical bush or tree where they nested the year before. But far more remarkable is the navigation of the juvenile Golden Plovers when making the first trip of their lives.Their breeding grounds stretch from Hudson Bay westward. While it is still summer, as soon as the young ones are old enough to care for themselves but not sufficiently feathered to make a long journey, the parents leave, moving at first eastward to Labrador where they stay awhile to rest and feed. After taking off from there, they pass | over Nova Scotia and, weather permitting, continue on for some 2,400 miles without stopping. On reaching the coast of South America they again pause for a short time before continuing the journey to their winter quarters in the pampas of where they arrive in September. This flight over the ocean, almost passing belief, must take all of 48 hours. Most birds fly either by day or by night, but this is ceaseless, unless the Plovers rest on the surface of the water occasionally, which is possible. If the weather is not propitious, they come down in Bermuda; otherwise flocks of them are seeh passing right over the island. How wonderful to be able to find this tiny dot in the Atlantic, almost 600 miles from any point on the continent! We learn from aviators why this route is chosen. They are always aided by a tail wind which the men call “the Bermuda high.” But this constant wind from the north would be against the birds were they to try returging by the same route. And so in March they come north by an entirely different flyway—an exception to the rule that birds use the same course both ways.Flying in a north - westerly direction they touch Equador, cross the Isthmus of Panama and the Gulf of Mex- ‘ico, and go up the Mississipp: Valley, on grounds.Their children, born in the Arctic, must later take the autumn trip without guidance. They do not follow their elders, but choose the Mississippi flyway by which their parents ‘came north before they were born, and finally join them in the pampas of Argentina. Was there ever a more wonderful case of navigation? What ‘is the most common Hawk in eastern Canada?to their breeding Murvyn Vye, making his motion picture debut in Paramount's “Golden Earrings,” Ray Milland- Marlene Dietrich co-starrer, once worked in vaudeville with Milton Berle as stooge and singer.Prof.Louis Baudouin Will Address Meeting Of Westmount-Club at a meeting of the Westmount Mrs.C.S.Fortier will presiae Women's Club Inc, to be held tomorrow in Victoria Hall at 2.30 p.m, The guest speaker will be Professor Lonis Baudouin.Doctor of Private and Public Law, Profes- Department, McGill University, who will be introduced by the Rt.Rev.T.W.Jones, M.A, D.D,, Moderator of the United Church of Canada.Mrs.Jones will also be a guest at the meeting. The soloist will be Armonde ‘Davis, contralto, accompanied at the piano by Mrs.F.G.Sharpe.sor of Civic Law, Paris, now Law: Members are reminded that guest tickets may be used.- Commentary On Friend Of Man The dog, the horse, and his mother have at various times been mentioned as being the best friend of man, An illuminating commentary on this question is presented in “The Silver Cord” which will be the next Trinity Players production commencing on the evening of Wednesday, December 4tH, It's hard enough to muster up nerve to go to the dentist without having him take it away from you.- #4 + % If poverty really is a blessing in disguise, the disguise is perfect.@ TINTING PAINTING PAPERING FLOORS CLEANED AND WAXED WALL-WASHING .Free Estimates Phone Anytime ‘ McEWEN DECORATING SERVICE © Clean, Guaranteed Work @ PL.4391 Argentina,.CHESTERFIELD SETS STUDIO SETS STUDIOS SEWING MACHINES WASHING MACHINES STOVES FURS I use anything.MA.2720 x * REWARD x i anyone can FIND the merchandise listed below they will be well REWARDED OFFICE AND PLUMBING SUPPLIES MEN'S CLOTHING AND LUGGAGE ORGANS, PIANOS, RADIOS, GRAMOPHONES Nothing too big.Nothing teo small.NOTE: We pay the highest Cash Prices for all.We do not choose the articles you have to sell.We buy it ali.We, can Call Anytime American Furniture Exchange 921 St.Lawrence Bivd.Call and immediately a buyer will be at your door.Nothing too big.Nothing too small.American Furniture Exchange will buy it all.BREAKFAST SETS DINING ROOM SETS ODD BUFFETS .WICKER SETS WASH STANDS CARPETS REFRIGERATORS Evenings DO.6843 ‘’WVestmount’s Home Newspaper”” THE EXAMINER, Es ete bey, oan 1 ELA TS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1946 The Westmount Examiner x CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING x — PHONE YOUR ADS — WAlnut 2773.—— 10 WORDS FOR 3 5- 2c FOR EACH ADDITIONAL WORD PERSONALS .CHRISTMAS GREETINGS For your personal Christmas greeting cards, have us take a family photograph In your home, Call WA.5198 for free publication.P-16 ENJOYABLE MOVIES Sound and silent, shown in your home, for children’s par- tles, CR.4675, CA.4072, KAY'S Pantry, 364 Victoria Avenue, Westmount, open 24 hours, serving full course meals and lunches. All bome cooking.EL.0073.P-5 LOST LADY'S brooch of pearls, onyx and human hair, Westmount or Pine Ave.Reward.DE, 7044.P-54 ROOMS WANTED REFINED young lady desires room with breakfast preferred.WA, 6898.P-59 BUSINESS lady wants unfurnished or partly furnished room in apartment, with kitchen privileges.DE.7031, evenings, P-57 GARAGES WANTED VICINITY Western and Prince Albert Avenues, EL.6505.P-53 GARAGE wanted immediately, heated or unheated, for winter storage.Vicinity, west of Victoria Ave.and Sherbrooke, EL.5353.HEATED garage, vicinity Selby Street and Greene Avenue, WE.2274.P-60 GARAGE facilities wanted, vicinity Grsovenor and Sherbrooke; PACE SIXTEEN Westmount High Teacher Second Term President Kenneth Mactavish, of the Westmount High School staff, was reelected president of the Association of Protestant Men teachers of Greater Montreal for a second term at the third annual meeting, held Monday at Westmount. With the re-election of last year’s executive, the following also head the association this year: Vice-president, H.E.Wright, High School of Montreal; secretary, J.G.S.Brash, West Hill High School; treasurer, J.H.Ciley, Commercial High School.Negotiations for salary increases were still under way with the Montreal Protestant Centra] School Board, it was disclosed at the meeting.Announcement was madex of a special meeting on November 12 at 3 p.m.in the High School of Montreal, when the views of the board, as expressed by W.E.Dunton, chairman, and education director Thomas Som- merville, will be made public.Attending the meeting, to be under the joint chairmanship of Mr.Mactavish and Miss Isobel Sher- | man, president of the Federation of Protestant Women Teachers.| will be the executive council of the men's federation and all and women's groups.i Teachers were invited to sub-! mit written questions concerning salaries to be answered at the ‘ November 12 meeting.Such questions should be in the hands | of L.D.Lawley, of Westmount ; High School, research committee head, by November 9.It was understood by the teach- KENNETH MACTAVISH ers’ representatives that a revised salary schedule would be present- ed to the teachers by the board early in the New Year.In presenting his 1945-46 report, Mr.Mactavish pointed out that 263, or 96 per cent of the men teachers under the central board, were now members of the Protestant Men Teachers’ Association. Results of the year’s activities had included ‘improved relationship” between the men teachers and the school board, and “the putting into practice of what we consider the democratic way of approaching difficulties.” Co-operation with the women teachers had also been achieved “to a degree assuring our mutual advancement.’ Prestige of teachers was growing, in Mr, Mactav- ish’s opinion, and this increased prestige, “if properly taken advantage of,” would gain for ANTED : - For the HOMOEOPATHIC HOSPITAL e The Need Is Most Urgent « THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1946 teachers “the high place in our community which I think we merit.” Facing the executive for 1946- 47, said the president, would be the questions of continued salary negotiations with the central board, the setting up of regular channels of conference with the board (perhaps the establishment of a system whereby one day a "Westmount’s Home Newspaper” month could be set aside by the board to receive teachers’ delegations); revision of the constitution to allow for such changes ag the setting up of an adjustment committee; and an enquiry into extra-mural activities, with a view to providing recompense for teachers who.give a major portion of their free time to extramural school work.© PAINTING WESTMOUNT DECOR CO.© PICTURE FRAMING LA.3310 — 1227A GREENE AVENUE, WESTMOUNT (Premises formerly occupied by W.J.Chapman) ® DECORATING WE.2726 « WAITRESSES « TRAY GIRLS « FLOOR MAIDS MEALS and UNIFORMS PROVIDED Westmount | Highlights By John Dickens Derek Cushing, our favourite chartered accountant to be, and Jeff “Oilman” Messenger phoned the other night to ask if there was a Hi-Y dance at the school this Fri- nite.We assumed our most rumor-squishing tone and said positively not!
