Former Scouts When Howie Meeker, rookie of the year, playing for Toronto Maple Leafs this year, recently visited a Toronto Scout Troop and answered questions about hockey players, it was learned that several of the Leaf players are former Scouts! Scouts in D.P.Camps Some 15,000 Boy Scouts have been organized into Troops in camps for Displaced Persons in Germany, a survey has revealed. These include Latvians, Estonians, Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Russian Emigrants and White Ru- thenians. Many of these people, it was discovered, had continued the Scout programme throughout the war despite great difficulties.Bermuda has no income tax destroying the organ and resulting in considerable damage to the Church interior.During recent -months, while repairs were being made, the congregation accepted the kind invitation of Rev.J.A.Johnston, Westmount Baptist Church, where services have since been held.Repairs to the Melville Church have at last been completed and on Easter Sunday the congregation will resume worship in from the kitchen.“There are Grackles in the back yard.” I rushed to the kitchen window; but the hurry was unnecessary. The four birds, with bodies about the size of Robins but much longer, more fancy-looking tails, seemed in no undue haste. They strutted pompously around under the sumacs, poking their long bills down into the old, brown grass of last year’s Iawn.Though actually completely dressed in iridescent, metallie black, in the sunshine their backs shone as polished bronze, and their dark, green-blue heads glistened like Peacocks’ feathers.Straw-color- ed, glassy eyes gave the striking looking birds an unnatural appearance.Every now and then one of them tipped forwards, raised its wings somewhat, spread its splendid, 5 inch tail, and let out a grating, unmusical screech that surely hurt its throat. However, it seemed quite satisfied with its own performance. These Bronzed Grackles are born Canadians, brothers of the more wideiy-known Purple Grackles which are more southeriy: seldom if ever crossing the border. Both kinds belong to the Blackbird tribe, all species of which travel north together in large flocks every spring.Blackbirds are chummy, nesting in communities of like species.Grackles build bulky nests of mud and grass, preferring evergreens or heavy vines in parks and cemeteries or near residences, but they occasionally use hollow trees. From 3 to 7 green- ish-blue eggs, spotted and lined with brown and black, are laid.If a colony has begun on your property, do not expect much sleep after daylight, especially when there are nestlings.Noisy at any time, when feeding children their discordant racket is particularly trying early mornings.Another of their bad traits is stealing the eggs of other birds and preying on their young. So when surrounded by Grackles do not count on seeing other species, which fear these marauders and stay at a distance.Grackles also eat vegetable matter — fruit and seeds —sometimes spoiling crops. One of the few benefits they confer on us is to catch injurious grubs and worms that the farmer turns up in his spring ploughing.A Grackle characteristic is what is known to ornithologists as “boating” the tail. When flying the tail which resembles a pointed fan is spread, and the ends of the feathers are turned up, making a small fence. This is more evident in spring flight than at other seasons. How many belts has a Killdeer? The recent visit to Montreal of Barbara Ann Scott, newly-acclaim- ed worid champion figure-skater, ‘coupled with the extensive press publicity, uncovered this amusing incident which was related to me by Roy Häward, who, along with Joe Dufferin is in charge of the Montreal office of the Canadian High News.On the Sunday morning during Barbara Ann's visit, CHN.received a call from the Toronto office, saying a reporter was en route to get & story from ‘the champ”.The idea- was to get a reservation on the same plane that was to take the eighteen year-old skater to Toronto on Tuesday, two days later.Roy and Joe worked all Sunday, making the necessary arrangements, including a letter to Mrs.Scott for permission to interview her daughter on the plane. On Monday, Mary Dilworth, Toronto high school student who was to interview Barbara, had arrived and attended the public functions where Barbara appeared.Tuesday morning, at Dorval airport, Barbara and C.H.N.'s Correspondent boarded the Toronto plane.Inside, Mary sat beside Barbara for the remainder of the trip, obtaining the story which appeared in the High News a few weeks ago.A.reporter of the Toronto Star also on the plane, was left to view the scenery, having no opportunity to reach the skating queen for an interview.x At Toronto, after the plane had barely come to a stop, the High News editor and a photographer climbed aboard and locked the door.As the representatives of the Toronto papers were forced to wait C.H.N.took pictures and an on-the-spot interview.Emerging from the plane the cameras flashed as Barbare and Mary walked down the steps. One of the papers printed a picture of Barbara with the other ‘half of the picture noticeably removed. That night High News was receiving the congratulations from the people they had “scooped”.I think Joe and Roy are to be commended for the part they played to chalk up a major victory for their paper.Don't be surprised if on one of these fine spring days, while strolling along one of Westmount's avenues, your attention should be drawn to an airplane, which will probably be painted a brilliant purple and white. So what?Because the pilot of the craft will be as far as we know, Westmount High's first licenced pilot, Willard “Moe” Morrison, nineteen years old and an eleventh year student. He started flying a year ago, working part-time for flying lessons, as well as going to school. After eleven hours intermittent flying with an instructor, Moe went into the wild blue yonder alone one day and returned successfully, flying solo for the first time in his life.“This”, Mr.Morrison says, ‘‘was the outstanding feature of my flying career”.That was last September. This summer Moe will be employed at Cartier- ville by the Laurentide Flying School, during which he hopes to Westmount Highlights do some cross-country decade will have its culmination on the vening of Easter Sunday when members of Westmount Park Church will present “Dawn,” a two-act drama, in their church’s chancel. The play, which is strongly reminiscent of the mystery and morality plays of the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, was written by Roy Trevor and is being directed and produced by W.R.Chadburn ‘who has enjoyed a great deal of theatrical experience in England and the continent.COCHRANE The cast of the production is * made up entirely of members of Westmount Park Church, for many of whom this is their first attempt at drama.Mr.Chadburn has nothing but praise for his cast, however.Says he, “Although most of them have had little experience on the stage, they are seized with ‘Dawn’ as being a drama of modern faith, and they are rapidly developing a professional manner in their acting.” This reporter, who attended a rehearsal last week-end, can back up Mr.Chadburn’s opinion’ of his cast.I was particularly impressed with the histrionic talent of Dorothy Copland who plays the role of Mary Magdalene and who does it in a manner that many professional actresses would find difficult to equal.Moderator Praises Play The play has received high praise from such an authority as Right Rev.T.W.Jones, D.D., moderator of the United Church of Canada, who read the script and expressed great interest in its possibilities as a contribution to better understanding of the Easter message. With an accolade from such a quarter, Roy Trevor, the nom de plume of a member of Westmount Park Church, can really feel proud of his work.“Dawn” is actually divided into four parts, a brief prologue, with the setting the sepulchre of Christ, the first act, with the holding 10 per cent, can be brought to see, and to account willingly, their own responsibility in the national economic policy, A queer situation has arisen in the British Labor movement, .as revealed in the recurrence of what are called “unofficial strikes.” It had been naturally expected that, with a strong Labor Government in power, organized Labor would be solidly united and that strikes would be eliminated or reduced to a minimum. That this has not been achieved is not, however, the fault of the Government or of responsible labor union leaders. As I understand the situation, it resolves itself into a problem of central authority and control — that is, authority of the high officials of organized labor in all matters of dispute, and full control over the actions of the union à {[then the Labor Government's game is up.And so is the game of all those who believe in a conscious economy directed towards the twin aims of stable employment and rising standards of living.” Those are the words of broad and deep wisdom which the leaders of labor and the warkers themselves should seriously consider. The glib agitator, who still uses the language of the class war and membership, especially of lower union officials, It was the shop SALLY'S SALLIES Labor Government is not one of stewards who led the truck-drivers strike in London which paralyzed transportation and threatened the city with starvation, Both the high union officials and the Labor Government were powerless to prevent or to call off the strike. The shop stewards thumbed their noses at the hierarchy of the Labor movement.Commenting on the situation, the London Economist of Jan.18 said: “The drivers of Smithfield thought they were striking for holidays and overtime. But they 11, Ie a udm is.in Word the workers’ worst enemy.Especially is this so in Britain at the present time, when what they need is industrial co-operation and rising profits as a sign of rising productivity and increased capital.> In a recent speech, Sir Stafford Cripps promised that there would be “no conscription of labor,” but the very fact that he mentioned such a thing would indicate that the Government may have considered it as one of the possible means of solving the present labor problem.Sir Stafford said it was necessary to bring 100,000 foreign- nerd have blundered into the very centre of the chief problem of high economic policy. They have disproved the theory upon which the promise of work for all, combined with the rising standard of living, has been based. At the very moment when the Labor Government and the Trades Union Congress were in solemn conclave on these matters, the shop stewards of Smithfield have poked their heads in at the door to warn the Government that they should not rely on any promises from the union leaders, since they cannot deliver the goods, even in the most literal sense of those words.” This rebellious element has always been strong in the Labor movement — indeed, the movement originated in rebellion against real injustices, Now that labor unions have got the upper hand in industry and even in government, the rebel complex which was cultivated in the early days still survives and is turned oS “Ever get the feeling you'd like to get awa! ‘from it all?” against the high-placed leaders of the Labor movement. As the Eco- omist says.“The way to rise in a labor organization is, very often, to make a nuisance of yourself. To the extent that this is true, it puts a premium upon irresponsibility and makes appeals to reason self - defeating.” Thus the problem faced by the talks about abolishing profits, is reconciling organized Labor and employers, but rather of controlling the active leaders of the rank and file who actually start and lead the unofficial strikes.“How can these men be reached and influenced?asks the Economist.“It would be presumptuous on the part of any outsider to give advice to the Government, whose members have spent a lifetime in the Labor movement. But it is legitimate to insist that it is with these men, and not the official ers into British industry to meet the present year's labor requirements. But he as much as told Labor unions that they were responsible for the situation when he said: “The nation cannot afford increases in wage levels and shorter hours of work unless the change can be shown to increase output per man.” That is merely a repetition of what the employers have been saying to the unions right along. It is now quite obvious that the socialist planned economy launched by the Labor Government is not working the miracles of production and economic recovery promised by the Labor Party in their bid for power.Such planning can only be made to work by complete authority and control over the freedom of labor. That is how it works in Russia. But the British people are too fond of their freedom to submit to the dictatorship required for the success of a plan- ned economy.K.C., D.C.L.© Interest Are Discussed e The opinions accept responsibility for them.possibility of a general election in that country. The Labor members do not favor a coalition and Mr.Churchill agrees with them as to this. The Government ministerial ranks have lost a lot of fighting strength.Hon.Ellen Wilkinson is gone, killed by a faulty economic system.Morrison is very ill in hospital.Bevin has been warned against continuing his difficult work and even the Prime Minister seriously shows the strain.Sir Stafford Cripps was a very distraught and pale man (so the newsmen reported) when he gave his interview on the situation. The brave men and women in all political parties have a difficult time and there are many casualties.Economic warfare is not far removed from actual war and all because of the fact that our economic system is faulty. The rules of the game are not fair to anyone as the net result too surely shows.By and large those who operate any of the systems in use throughout the world are doing their best in all the circumstances, so what is badly needed is not more checks and balances but rather a system so just to all that it will not be necessary to ki people in war or in legislative assemblys because of a faulty economic system.* % * France's plan {o combat inflation, commonly called “The Blum Plan,” after its founder, former Premier Leon Blum. The experiment does not deal so much with economics as it does with the principle of regimentation of a nation and will be watched with interest by people everywhere.Instead of attempting to pacify the workers with wage increases the Government has “frozen” wages and will roll back all wholesale and retail prices. The first cut in prices was 5 per cent and the second 5 per cent.In announcing the second price cut Premier Ramadier said the first reduction had ‘stopped the crazy price race and brought France back from the brink of an abyss.” Admitting that the new price decree would strike some producers harder than others, the Premier commented, “But don't look for justice in all that. There is no more justice in the distribution of sacrifice than in sickness or In death.” * = In Nova Scotia one person in 3,321 is 85 or more.In Alberta one person in 18,511 can boast ninety-five birthdays. In P.EIL the ratio is one in 3,800 while THE FORUM, Conducted by Howard $.Ross, ln Which Subjects of General expressed In this Forum are not necessarily those of this newspaper, and it does not ,The press of G.B.reports the” in N.B.it is one in every 6,175, Ontario is one in 7,231; Manitoba one out of 7,593; B.C.ong in 7,707; Sask.one in 10,904 and Quebec one in 11,887.» + = The University of Toronto hu raised the salaries of its teaching staff.A lecturer will get $2,000, an assistant professor $3,500, an associate professor $4, 500, and a professor $3,500.% % » The following table shows how much we depend upon the U.S.A.for coal: Short tons Short tons Year United Kingdom U.S.A.1939 1,099,419 13,357,324 1940 1,514,741 15,899,975 1945 28,388 25,033,168 1946 101,580 -
