Our new editor, Joe Robb, is swinging right into things with a vengeance, doing all right so far.Well, we have to keep on the right side of him, don't we?George Cochrane, famous, or is it Vin- famous, Examiner Sports Editor and former Westmount High'er, popped into town on Tuesday night for some sort of a meeting and then adjourned to our office where he put his size fifteens on the desk and made himself at home.George is currently taking a teach- ‘er’s course at Macdonald College.Wonder what he's learning?% 4% % Well, with the good (?) news on the income tax now out, we're going out to celebrate .exactly two bits to do it with.RX OX % Bakery Wagons were in the limelight in Westmount on Tuesday. We noticed a Wonder Bakeries’ wagon turned over at the corner of Western and Grosvenor Avenues creating quite a traffic jam for the harassed motorists trving to drive in the unexpected snowfall.A James Strachan wagon provided an amusing few moments outside the Cliffside Garage. The poor horse found himself slipping into the sidewalk constantly on the slippery, wet snow and moved out into the centre of St.Catherine Street West where the footing was more secure, Eastbound trams were halted until a patient motorman persuaded the animal to remain at the side of the road after three tries.Rumours to the effect that the R.C.M.P.closed a store on St.Catherine near Metcalfe for dealing in black market clothing.Scouts & Cubs 8Y REG GROOME Plans for the Scout Show at the Forum slated for Saturday, May 17th, are rapidly nearing completion and all indications thus far are that the event will be an unqualified success.Rehearsals are proceeding on schedule and the Committee is reported pleased by the results of the efforts of the various unitg ‘involved in the Show.We wish to remind all units to get busy on ticket sales, not forgetting while they do this that 75% of the value of each ticket is returned to the unit after the show. What a splendid opportunity to build up the Troop or Pack funds! Our attention is drawn to the feat performed by nine-year-old Jackie Obee, of Merritton, Ontario, * near St.Catharines, who saved his leg from being amputated and possibly saved his life. His foot was caught in a track junction on the way back to school one after- | neon’ as a freight car moved down , the track. After his foot was severed, Jackie sent his companion and school chum, Eugene Lamothe, for help while he made for a nearby pond.Doctors said that by placing the lower part of his body in the ley water of the pond after the accident, he probably saved the rest of his leg from amputation. They said his action, based on first-aid training gained through Wolf Cub activities, congealed the blood and stopped severe bleeding. It also lessened shock and averted danger of tetanus or gangrene. The Official Emblem of the World Jamboree being held in Paris this summer earries the traditional Scout fleur-de-lis in gold on a blue background with & carrick bend in silver. The carrick bend with its ene lacing symbolizes the World Brotherhood of Scouting. It has become the custom for each World Jamboree to have its own symbol. At the last World Jamboree held in Holland in 183%, the emblem depicted the “Jacobs-staf”, an instrument used by the Dutch navigators of old to find their way round the world. In Hungary, the symbol was the miraculous White Stag of Hungary. The idea of a Jamboree emblem began with the Golden Arrow at Arrowe Park in 1920.Jackson Dodds, C.B.E., Montreal, was elected Dominion Commissioner, on the nomination of the Chief Scout for Canada, His Excellency Viscount Alexander of Tunis, at the annual meeting of the Canadian General Council, the Boy Scouts Association, at Monte- bello, Quebec, last week.Three vears ago, Mr.Dodds retired as General Manager of the Bank of Montreal.Canada’s Boy Scouts are soon to have a winter uniform, specially designed to meet Canadian cli- Mas ‘ ro ett, or eh theft NEW PROMOTION James ‘H.Collyer, well-known advertising executive, who hes heen appointed a vice-president and a director of Waish Advertising Inc., Montreal.Mr.Collyer served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the war in the capacity of Navigation and Signals Officer and Stoff Officer. The Walsh Organization also has offices in Windser, Toronto, and in Leadon.Eng.Roslyn News Recently there was a baseball game between the Lions and the Bears. At the end of the first inning the Bears were winning 1-0.As the game progressed however, the Lions went on a scoring spree.By the end of the game they had piled up a score of 34 against the Bears 3.The umpire was Mr.Pitcairn.A Home and School meeting will be held on May 5th in the Roslyn Gym.The officers will make their reports for the past year. There will also be an election of officers for the year 1947- 48.The Roslyn School choir have been practising hard as they are to sing at this meeting. The programme chosen by the choir leader is as follows: 1, Early One Morning .English Folk Song 2.Brahms’ Lullaby .Two Parts 3.A Shepherd Kept Sheep Canon 4.All Through the Night .(Descant) 5.Children’s Prayer .Lithuanian Folk Song | 6.Medley of Patriotic Songs 7.Good Night .(Round) God Save the King The choir is under the direction of Miss Vera Jamieson. On Wednesday of last week a softball game was played between the Tigers and the Cubs.Owing to the fact that the Cubs’ full team did not show up, the Tigers won by default. The Cubs, however, got some other Roslyn boys over at the Park to play. The Cubs won 19-4.The game did not count. The next day the Panthers and Cate played, the Panthers winning 25-7.None or our reporters saw the game so we cannot give you a report of it.The girls of Grade VI, Room 13, have nearly finished making their laundry bags which they started about a month ago. Some of the girls are using blue material, some pink, yellow or light green, with a pattern embroidered on them.PLATE KEPT FOOD WARM Hot water was placed in the lower part of the old-fashioned faise-bottom plate. This prevented the food in the upper section from cooling too quickly. In addition to the regular Cubs, Scouts and Rovers, there are in Canada Lone Scouts who live in rural or isolated areas where lack of numbers make it impossible to form a Troop.matic conditions.Fred Deacon of Montreal, an expert, who developed winter clothing used by British and American armies, is a member of the Dominion Stores Committee designing the new winter Scout uniform.Col.George W.Cavey, O.B.E., M.C., M.M, of Ottawa, is the Chairman.# THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, MAY 2, 1947 “Westmount's Home Mewspe SE Westmount Highlights - and a deep glazed ruby shade, suggestive of fireshine on winter afternoons. Finally, after - dinner coffee was served in tiny cups of frosted white, the slender handles tinted in varicolored pastels.Mother had an assortment of odd cups and saucers, - too, and was always on the watch for unusual and distinctive patterns.% 4% % A voice pierced the quiet of the morning, and we smiled.Mother wandered through the hall to the front door window.“She's talking to the postman,” she said.“We shall just have to wait for our mail.” The voice belonged to a certain Mrs.Williston, who lived directly opposite us in a red brick house. It was a perfectly groomed house, whose porch and path were scrupulously swept or shovelled every day, according to the season. The grass was brilliantly green and smooth in summer, and the flowering hedge was trimmed according to geometry rather than Nature.Mrs.Williston was moreover very thrifty, and there was not a delivery boy but knew he must be on his toes, ready to reject the blame should an orange or a safe- ty-pin be missing when he brought her order.Mrs.Williston was aware of a caller's approach almost before his footsteps turned into her pathway, because she was somehow never very far from her window. Before the knocker sounded she would reach the door, armed with a supply of very audible words, be the visitor friend or peddles.Information regarding her family was lavishly given out her shrill-tones carrying the news for some distance down the street. So today she had caught the postman as he was escaping down the path, and he stood there restlessly, poised for flight.“She's polishing the knocker as she talks,” my mother reported.“It really does shine.” “ The whole house was like that, and Mrs.Williston dressed well. But somehow, she never seemed to do anythink BUT dress, and talk, and polish her front knocker.¥ +% % The waitress set a sandwich down on the counter, and went for coffee, The counter was filled.People stood in a row behind the seats, their eyes anxiously fixed on those who were eating their desserts.Elbows rubbed elbows, and clouds of cigarette smoke formed about the food.I tried to concentrate o.the book which had Just reached me through my private “Book - a - month” Club, shared with three friends. We lent .each other all our books, and bought new ones every four weeks. My latest ones were Willa Cather’s “Lost Lady.” It was something like a poem in prose .à fragment of incidents slung together, each reflecting the personality of a beautiful woman, in the days when: the gracious living of the South was not yet extinguished.First there was the height of her glory, and her radiant charm. Then the shadow of change creeping in— but still her charm. The old world died, and with it her position.Wealth, power, homage were stripped away, but the one quality on which her life was built remained and gave the pathos to the title of the book.- “Salt, please,” said a salesman leaning across my plate.Hints On Fashions This is a dress with which to skip blithely through spring and then ‘step just as smartly into suminer.“The simply cut little number is made of brown crepe, decked out twith a little coolie collar, short ‘set-in sleeves and a flanged shoulder tuck. The front of the skirt is relieved by a group of unpressed box- pleats, and the back is straight. For color interest there is a pink foulard sash polka dotted in brokm -4 p
