It has been announced that the City of Westmount intends to place the names of all of its citizens who lost their lives in World War II on additional tablets which will be erected at the War Memorial.In order to have the list as complete as possible, letters will be sent out to all next-of-kin to check the records which the City has compiled from various sources, including the records at Ottawa.New By-Law Proposed Consideration 1s being given, by the Westmount City Council to a new zoning by-law which will concern the erection of various classes burners to the powerful giants of buildings.| Funeral Tuesday For Drowned Boy A funeral was held on Tuesday morning, from St.Leo's Church, Westmount, for 11-year-old Pierre Loranger, of 235 Kensington avenue, who lost his life in the pool of the Notre Dame des Grace Community Hall late Friday afternoon.An autopsy performed that night showed the cause of death as - drowning.Reports indicate that the boy, a son of Crown Prosecutor Henri Masson Loranger, K.C., and grandson of Mr.Justice J.L.Loranger of the Superior Court, went with his brother Jacques, 13, to the pool, where a large number of boys were enjoying respite from the summer heat.The pool is well- patrolled by Neil Cameron and Theo.Macduff, who are both competent swimming instructors.It is reported that Mr.Cameron spotted the boy under water, and immediately removed him from the water and commenced artificial respiration.Firemen and membera of the Quebec Hydro Emergency Squad were called, as well as Dr, D.D'Avery Bailey, of the Homoeopathic Hospital, and Dr.Samuel Shuster.of 35821 Girouard avenue, who worked on the body without success for an hour and a half, Mr.Cameron, in his years as a swimming instructor at the Community Hall, has rescued from the water well over 125 individuals who were in serious difficulty.RATS IN WESTMOUNT Rats have been reported by Miss Sophie Elliott, of 90 Arlington avenue, who claims that they are growing plentiful in the neighbourhood, and that they have been raiding garbage cans and are getting into homes.Miss Elliott reports that she has heard of similar situations in other Westmount localities, and claims she would rather see dogs on the loose than have to put up with rats.BEN aan x Ra SUE om, ea WHIMSIES , By Oliver Towne Received a complaint from a Westmount resident to the effect shat her garbage, when left in the streets to be picked up, is being overrun and scattered around by numerous rats.Not only that, it was stated, the rats do not confine themselves to routing around in the garbage, but spend much of their time finding their way into the houses themselves.The observance was made that it was much better to have dogs running loose around the city than the rats which are on the prowl just mow.Maybe the city should investigate this.a little more closely Great indignation has been ex- k— pressed by a number of residents who own property in the Gros- venor, Victoria Avenue District.No, this is not about the tramways work, but about a proposed lane to be built down the middle of the block, cutting off some “backyard” property of property owners on these two streets.We believe the idea is partly to provide a rear exit for the new theatre on Victoria Avenue.One citizen stated that he had his lawn and garden all seeded and starting to grow, and now the city wants to expropriate some of his land.Accordingly, there is a strengthening opposition now arising, with all the property owners fighting it.% % % Overheard at a Westmount restaurant .“No wonder we haven’t sold any of that spaghetti tonight, we forgot to put it on the menu.” We must extend congrats to our genial Sports Editor, ye old George “Buddy” Cochrane, for the magnificent literary effort he is now putting forth, which is known as “The Pillar”.Undoubtedly, it will henceforth be a Pillar of Strength on page two.+ % % George was all set this week to start an extensive research programme on that much debated problem of late, “Whether or not girls should kiss with their eyes open or closed.” However, due to the urgent pressure of more important matters, George was forced to postpone the starting of the experiments until after next week .the line forms to the right, girls! % % % Congrats to Tom Sparrow, one of our Westmount Boy Scouts, who will be going over to Paris this summer to attend the World Jamboree.He will be going over aboard the “Warrior”, a Canadian Aircraft Carrier, and is looking forward to the trip.He is representing the entire District of Montreal.Well-Known (Continued from page 1) into the railroad shops, taught their trade, and given educational courses to fit them for their future tasks.Aided Railway Development Mr.Robb was deeply interested in the welfare and opportunities for promotion of his men.He created a skilled and loyal staff which advanced with him.He grew with the growth of Canadian railroading, and played a prominent part in its progress, which greatly influenced the phenomenal development of the country, He was a Canadian, born and bred, and never forgot, in his long and active life, that his country and her people had first claim on his loyalty.Mr.Robb married Catherine Haggart Black, daughter of James Black, of Montreal, in 1881.She died in 1937.Five sons and a daughter survive.They are Joseph D., J.Bruce, W.Clifton, and F.Morse, all of Montreal, and Wallace H., of Kingston, Ont., and Mrs.C.R.Sneed, of Montreal.The funeral service was held ât 2 p.m.Wednesday, in St.Andrew's United Church, Westmount, where Rev.D.M.Grant oficiated.Interment was Down Hobbylane By FRANCES GAUTHIER at ‘Mount Royal Cemetery.| J Leagan hoe ee ame REY" PYF I'm ready.Won't you join me?Where to?why, down Hobbylane, of course! Hon.Jan MacKenzie, Minister of Veteran's Affairs, was brought to task by the Speaker for attempting to in- troduce a third language into our already } bilingual House of Commons.This is the event as recorded in Hansard on Monday, May 26th: Right Hon.IAN A.MACKENZIE (Minister of Veterans’ Affairs): Mr.Speaker, I rise to a question of privilege.Last Friday, at page 3433 of Hansard, the authenticity of my interpretation of holy writ was challenged by one of my good friends from Toronto.I was supported by the book, sir, the Bible on which you were brought up.I went home and got my own Gaelic Bible, and I am going to put the quotation on record.I have a precedent for doing this, because John Tolmie— Mr.MacKINNON : He was my uncle.Mr.MACKENZIE: —did this about forty years ago, in the Gaelic language as used in that part of the country from which my colleague the Minister of Trade and Commerce (Mr.MacKinnon) comes.This is what it says in Genesis, chapter 27, part of verse 22: : Is e 'n guth guth Iacoib, ach is iad no lam- han lamhan Esau.The translation, which I give to a long suffering Hansard, is: The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.Mr.GRAYDON: Mr.Speaker, does this mean that this house is becoming trilingual?Mr.MACKENZIE: It should be.Mr.SPEAKER: According tothe rules the right hon.minister should not try to introduce a way concerned, in any of these visits, in the affairs of the conspiracy.” In view of the quashed conviction another observation of the judgment is of interest and moment.“Naturally,” the court pointed out, “there will be much suspicion that there | is real substance behind all that appears on the record of this trial, but the court cannot proceed upon suspicion.” In this phase the Appeal Court put a finger on the uneasy fear that has been | troubling many Canadians since the espionage trials began.In seeking to protect our liberties against those who from selfish or sinister motives have been whittling them away, have we assured these accused the essential freedom and the even justice that we are striving to protect?Or have we dealt in suspicion and prejudice?: Awhile ‘ago the writer was discussing the espionage trials with an old-time friend who is also a justice of one of the courts of our country.He said: “I may as well admit that, in my fear of the growing aggression of Russia, my personal reaction was one of satisfaction at the convictions for espionage.But with that feeling there was a profound underlying fear that such a personal reaction, shared no doubt by a great many people, might be far more dangerous, in breaking down our belief in a justice beyond fear or revenge, than the work of any number of disloyal citizens.” When we remove the protections of the worst citizens, we have robbed the best citizens of the rights and safeguards that they and their forebears have worked and fought for over countless generations.Let us be slow to substitute any hint of Stars Chamber rule for rue of the courts.= TO FILM LIFE OF EXPLORER Preparations for the forthcoming film “Scott Of The Antarctic” which quintessence of the Common Man and it was as such and through the convictions and aspirations which history made available to common men in his time that he grew to the heights he reached.Some critics believe that his Science of Life (written with his son and Julian Huxley), may come to be recognized as more remarkable than his world famous’ Outline of History.When 19 he wrote The Past and Future of the Human Race and seldom thereafter took a less ambitious subject.It is said that although he left the evangelistic Protestantism in which he was brought up he always remained the most passionate of Protestants, the most eloquent of evangelists.At the end he realized that his work and hopes were in vain; that he or humans are dreadfully wrong and he blamed it all on the human race.As I read his books I wished he had realized the possibilities of Equitism under which the world "would have an equitable medium of exchange for the work individuals do for each other, the only I had a good laugh to If when I read the following extract from the British Labor Government's White Paper, “Economic Survey; 1947, issued in February last: © «at the present time there is too much money chasing after too few goods.To increase the amount of money in people’s pockets does nothing te increase the amount of goods available.On the contrary, it makes the situation worse, since, if there is still more "money chasing the same amount of goods, prices must sooner or : Jater be forced up and no one will be any better off than they were * before.” After I had recovered from my sudden fit of cachinnation I ex- to discover what it was that tick- fed me.I found that the humor of it was, so to speak, double- parrelled.In the first place, the jdea of too much money chasing after too few goods; and then still more money chasing after fhe same amount of goods, follow- ¢d by the chasing of prices up the spiral staircase, was in itself a funny motion picture.But the thing that caused the explosion was the childlike simplicity of must soener or later be forced up nd no one will be any better off han they were before.” It was these last words that touched my funny-bone, for it seemed to me that the idea that ‘no one will be any better off’ for ali this chasing, had struck the writer as an after-thought, as though he had made a unique dis- tery.It may indeed be a new discovery for some members of the Labor Government who.have for years been engaged in promoting this economic steeplechase.They have all along contended fhat higher and higher wages will give to the workers more and more purchasing power, which would enable them to buy more and more goods, raise their standard of living, and provide full employment for everybody.Now that they nave got into power and have come to close grips with the practical problems of financing, ‘production and marketing, they have discovered the fallacy of their theory of big purchasing power.They have discovered that high wages are not purchasing power at all unless there is an abundance of goods to purchase.The theory might have worked out all right if high wages had been accompanied by higher production, but they put production into reverse with slowdowns and strikes and the reduc- tien of working hours, The logical result was increased production Costs, decreased production, short- âges, higher prices, and a lowered Mandard of living.The White Paper understated the situation when it said that “no one will be any bétter off than they were before,” for the British workers ire worse off than they ever were before, It may seem like a callous thing to say, but I believe, from What I saw in Britain, that the frorkers would be better off with OWer wages This is practically What the White Paper means When it speaks of “too much Money chasing after too few goods.” This point is doubly emphasized by the further statement hat “to increase the amount of Money in people's pockets does of hing to increase the amount te Boods available.On the con- ary, it makes the situation Worse,” .i average worker in Britain, underway.This week, two of the most important summer time activities open the holiday season—the Parks and Playgrounds Association with medel playground programs planned for grounds scattered throughout Montreal, and for Red Feather camps and affiliated camps, one of which, Camp Lewis of the Montreal Boy's Association, opened Wednesday of this week with 250 young campers arriving at the camp site in St.Adolphe de Howard.With the reins of school year discipline loosened and plenty of time on their hands, vacationing youngsters need tactful supervision and a variety of activities to occupy their minds and bodies.To this end, Welfare Federation agencies have aranged special summer pro- city children who must be confined to the congested neighborhoods as well as those who will have the thrill of camping in the country.50-DAY PROGRAM The playgrounds operated by the Parks and Playgrounds begin their 50-day program this week, with specially trained play leaders to supervise activities from morning until nightfall.Since the playgrounds are centres of neighborhood activity in every district, projects are plahned to include all age groups from the sandbox crowd to the older boys and girls who go in for team games and advanced handicrafts.Some of the pitching and checker games to entice parents to drop around.Another summertime project which is less well known is the Daily Vacation School.Several schools will be opening during the tirst week in July, marking the 35th year of activity.VACATION SCHOOL One might think that the idea of returning to school would have little appeal to youngsters who shout with joy as they leave their classrooms in mid-June.On the contrary, all of the schools were filled to capacity last season, and early enrollments indicate that ‘Hello’ from a pilot.” Jimmie left to join the Army Air Force the next day.While David missed him, the idea that he had a personal friend whe was a real pilot and who at some time soon would dip his wings in salute just to him‘colored al lhis days.He thought and talked almost continuously about planes, and all his play centered around them.Jimmie entered the Service his gift to his little friend was a four- foot plane model, and this was later suspended with wires from the ceiling of the boy's room.David constantly pretended that Jimmie was at its controls as he pushed it gently back and forth through the air.hen came the fateful telegram to Jimmie’s family—and the word to David’s mother and father that Jimmie had been killed in the service of his country.David's parents both knew that their little son must soon be told, but how?— certainly not too casually.They, also, loved Jimmie very much and felt his loss keenly.My friend, in telling me the story, said, “It was the hardest thing I ever had to do.His father and I thought it would be best for David to be alone with me when I told him.He never wants anyone to sec him cry—not even his daddy.I was sitting on the davenport, apparently reading a book, but really groping for a way and praying for the courage to tell him; he was playing happily near me.Finally I said, “David, our hero has given his life for our country.’ “His little face, usually so rosy, blanched, and he looked at me— silent, scared, and unbelieving.At last he said, ‘Oh, Mother! —Jimmie's dead?That means I'll never see his again, doesn’t it?’ “Yes, darling,’ I said, feeling more inadequate than ever before in my life.“Quickly David climbed up beside me, threw his arms around me and clung tightly.I could feel the sobs slowly rising inside that small body and at the same time a growing determination not to give way to tears before me.Such strong conflicting emotions are more than even an adult can long withstand; they would be devastating to a child.Slowly, I released his arms from around my neck and brought him face to face with me.“ ‘David,’ I said, ‘Mother feels just as sad about Jimmie as you do, but I think if we both cry for Jimmie and say a prayer, it will A CHILD'S GRIEF Retently a dear friend told me of an experience she had had with her small son, David.It had been a revelatian to her, and it proved to me, too, that young children feel grief and have a depth of love that few of us realize.She told me the story with complete sympathetic understanding, for she had just shared her child's first real sorrow.David, in spite of his mere five years, absolutely adored Jimmie, the nineteen-year-old boy who lived next door.They were as close as brothers could possibly be, for Jimmie loved David, too.One day*Jimmie pointed to a plane high overhead and said, “Look, David, one of these days I'll come flying over your house in a plane and I'll dip my wings-—that means * On the first Christmas after y help very much.We shall both feel better.” It is a simple iittle story, but [ have not been able to forget the impression it made.The poet tells us: “Grief knits two hearts in closer bonds than happiness ever can, and sufferings shared ars far stronger links than joys.” I think David's mother, by her sympathetic understanding, has caused to be established a love and confidence between her son and herself which can never be shaken or taken away.Condemned to Die The Everglade kite, of Florida, depends entirely on a species of snail for its food, Now man is draining the habitat of the snail, and with the snail's disappearance, the bird, as the official agency for locating lost persons in conjunction with the Governments and the Red Cross Societies of other nations; and as the official agency for the teaching of arts and crafts to disabled veterans in hospitals throughout Canada.Also, the Canadian Red Cross is recognized as the official organization to create a nationwide blood bank for civilians who need transfusions; and it is recognized by governments and municipal authorities as the logical agency to respond with emergency relief in case of disasters such as fires, floods, explosions and epidemics.The act of Dominion Parliament dated 1909 authorizes the Canadian Red Cross to promote public health and humanitariar interests.To quote its motto, the objective is, always: “The improvement of health, the prevention of disease and the mitigation of suffering”.Thus the Society has undertaken such work as outpost fursing;
