Bettering Childhood Health Canada’s fifth annual “National Immunization Week” is being sponsored next week by the Health League of Canada, in co-operation with health departments and other authorities across the country.This campaign is part of the public health programme, and it is designed to impress on everyone the importance of taking protective measures against two diseases which threaten the children of Canada.These two killers of children are diphtheria and whooping cough.These diseases have taken a terrible toll of life in the past.They can do 30 again, unless we establish and maintain our defences against them.Immunization Is The Answer The most against the ravages of these two killers—and other diseases, e.g.smallpox—is immunization.The means to wipe them out exists.All that is needed is the co-op- eration of the public.Parents and guardians throughout the nation should realize that diphtheria and whooping cough are preventable—and that their public health officers and their family physicians have the means to protect them and their.children “from the menace of these twin scourges.Disease prevention measures in the past have accomplished so much that the present geheration, generally speaking, is not sufficiently aware of the unceasing need for disease prevention if we are to keep killing epidemics from raising their ugly heads among our population.\\ For example, there were over 7,000 deaths in Montreal from smallpox in 1885—and that with a much smaller population than our metropolis has today.Since that time, vaccination against smallpox has been made obligatory by law, with the result that this disease has disappeared from the province.Since smallpox has disappeared, why bother with vaccination?The answer is that-we must maintain our protection against the disease by vaccination to prevent a recurrence of this scourge.Seattle, Washington found out the hard way.Two years ago, smallpox was introduced, and spread throughout the city like wildfire, attacking hundreds, and killing (Continued, on Page 2) square vit errr *- important defence ; + w Jean Van Patter Wins Duggan Scholarship Miss Jean M.Van Spelling, Arithmetic, Health text books and then our mascot, a little brown puppy stuffed with straw and with one ear off.Then our copies of Black Beauty, Tom Brown's School Days and Christmas Carol.Then came our posters and a big sheet of beaver board which we put our posters on.Then the book shelf with all the books it contained, the Books of Knowledge, History and ordinary reading books.Then there were maps of all descriptions.Maps of the United States, Canada and South America.All this soon amounted to quite a lot.But still more things kept coming down.Mr.Pitcairn's odds and How About Diphtheria?In 1927, when toxoid for diphtheria was first introduced, Canada became one of the leading countries in widespread use of this immunizing agent.The result is that the number of deaths causgd by this killer of children is now but a fraction of what it was before toxoid was developed, and where immunization has been complete, elimination of the disease has been complete.The very scarcity of the disease, due to the benefits from immunization, make us prone to forget the dangers, and to put off having our children theria.The inevitable result is that deaths from diphtheria have been increasing in the last few years.Incidentally, for complete pro- teétion against diphtheria, the first course is not enough, One immunized against diph- Down Hobbylane By FRANCES GAUTHIER Collecting can be a very ‘enjoyable pastime—expensive or not, depending on you.Outside of well-known collections, such as stamps, paintings, antiques, etc, are millions of other things.For instance, people interested in play# shows, concerts, sports, etc, collect programs as souvenirs — others, book reviews.or amusing or tragic or educational incidents publicized in everyday papers.Interested in biographies or history?Articles on great men or outstanding citizens are for you; centuries, but in the course of time, the castes became very rigid, and the outcasts suffered.To improve the situation, certain measures have been taken in recent years.For example, by the new constitution, recently adapted, the caste system is declared illegal.Moreover, the progress of modern education is changing things.; Education Poor Mr.Chand stated that education, by our standards, is very poor in India, only about 25 per cent of the population being literate.In his opinion, the chief _ cause is that roughly 90 per cent of a population.of some 400,000,- 000 lives in outlying districts.Progress in education is being made, however, he said, and the populace is being educated in three ways, at present: i, schools have been set up for parents and er adults; ii, members of police forces are receiving educa- - tion, with promotion as a stimulus; iii, prisoners are being educated, with time off their sentences in proportion to their progress as a stimulus.Early marriage in India is slowly disappearing with the advance of education, especially in thé larger centres, he declared.In certain instances, marriages are arranged and formalized at a very e@ y age, but the parties to the .drriage do not even see one another, in most instances, until maturity.Marriages in India are usually quite stable, he said.Industry in his country got off to a late start, but developed rapidly, and is good, now, he declared.The country has wide natural resources, and has built up powerful iron and steel and textile industries, and others are progressing.At present a schism exists between Nehru and his followers who are for the building of an industrialized India, and Gandhi, and his followers who be- eve that industrialization is an evil influence.However, considerable modern development is taking place, especially in transportation, with the development of canal systems, an in dams, for irrigation, and power.What will be perhaps the biggest dam in the world is now under construction on the Ganges river.The political situation in India is involved, but is ironing itself out.Recently, said Mr.Chand, a general uprising against the British was feared.However, due to thé wise counsel of Gandhi, thé people of India came to recognize the fact that they were much better under British rule than that of Russia, or Japan.Incidentally, he added, the communistic faction in India is almost totally discredited.He concluded by saying that the people of India were eager for the friendship and trade with Canada and urged his listeners to.take advantage of their opportunity, .He added, incidentally, that Rotary Clubs were active and performing valuable service in India.Rotarian Walter Murray thanked the speaker for his interesting address, and extended to the people of India the friendship and good wishes of the Rotary Club Dine in Damask The rule that appears in standard eliquette books.“We dine or breakfast on damask but we lunch on lace,” does not mean that only lace is correct for luncheon.It is merely a catchy little sentence to express the idea that .the lunch table is “bare”, according to correct social tradition; that is, one does not use a white damask cloth with a felt pad underneath for luncheon but that is reserved for dinner, and mats or a lighter type of cloth are used for luncheon.» And 40 homes in the Nova Sco- tia tishing village of Pleasant Bay had been destroyed by fire.THE EXAMINER, FRIDAY, OCTOBER * Song Poem Appealing For Music Words That Haunt in Lilting Style Worth Attention Rose Marie is a romantic these modern counterparts of Antique French glass doorknobs, can be teamed -with drawer pulls in matching designs.Also worth noting for a household pick-me-up are French-im- ported trays and pictures which boast three dimensional designs of flowers, birds or fish.The unusual effect is created by painting overlapping parts of the design on separate sheets of glass and fitting glass layers together within a wooden frame, FOR MODELING If modelling clay is not readily available, do not deprive little children of the pleasure of making beads, marbles, balls, fruits, flowers or animals from a plastic substance so well suited to the purpose.Make a substitute for modelling clay by mixing together one cup of flour and one-half cup of salt, moistening the mixture with enough water to make a “workable” dough.Children will find this as usable, and as interesting as the traditional product.Clear plastic tray teams with lucite luggage rack to make .handy service table.Rack folds flat for storage.Crinkled lucite salad bowl and diamond - patterned tray are decorative examples of new applied design for plastics.Graceful galax leaf is duplicated in synthetic rubber to make new coasters.Ridged veins trap moisture from glass.* Maggy Rouff Favors Swinging Bell Skirt The highlight of the Maggy Rouff fashion collection in the introduction of the swinging bell skirt as the motif of all her daytime costumes except strictly functional sports togs.She contends that ultra long skirts tend to make one look older, and hems in her Paris exhibit are séldom longer than 12 inches from the ground for informal daytime costumes.Gay nineties flavor is evident in the usé of graduated bands of velvet or deep hems of contrasting fabric, ball fringe trimming, LE F DAY AND EVENING nurses, Hospital receive school maintained.diplomas.LASS SLPS LILES LIA SEAL LLL CLS LILIES SS ALLS LS LALLA LSS SL SES SILLS SLL SLS AS 1 .NL UYS LA I M A II AAA I UM M ME M M MA A AAA MAMMA Lg @) The EGERTON SCHOOL Regd RAINED ATTENDANTS Tupper St., Montreal A relicb'e school of established reputation, stressing thorough training and individual supervision.Highest standards maintained.BEGINNING IMMEDIATELY Instruction given by a staff of qualified, registered experience provided.Studefts Employment Apply for personal interview stating qualifications and ‘phone number to Miss E.W.Egerton, P.O.Box 74, Station H.Montreal, or "phone WA.1376 7 2 Rl Le eT Ee EO LLL TT li ral pL, CLASSES register 7777777777 777 7 Ra 77 P27 rd a 7 Illi li Z Ulster Is Centre Of Linen Industry Northern Ireland has the same problems of rationing in food and clothing that England and Scotland have, according to Mrs.Dehra Parker, first woman to be elected to the Ulster Parliament.The same regulations apply, except that large quantities of milk -are produced in North® Ireland and therefore milk is available there.The Irish linen which is gradually coming back into our market after a wartime absence, is all -produced in Northern Ireland, Mis.Parker said.Although some the manufacture of the linen is in Ulster.Fine Irish tweeds are made there, too.Shipbuilding and agriculture are the other .hief industries.No linen, household utensils or china are available to the people of Ulster, however— like products elsewhere in the British Isles, they are all for export.“Perhaps it is because we are still quite conservative when it comes to women,” she said.Household Hints Four to six people may be served from 1 pound of haddock with the recipe I'm giving you today.That means that the fish is “stretched” with dressing.You can.use dressing with other fish, too, to make it go further, because fish, like other meats, is by no means low-priced unless i : friends or relatives to do it for you.; In turning in their first win of-the past two campaigns, and their initial success since they knocked over the Montreal Hornets, the Alouettes’ predecessors back in 1945, the Tigers unvelled a smart forward passing attack, and while they still rest on the bottom of the heap, their lookout for the future is considerably brighter, That win over Alouettés is made all the more sweet by the fact that the Tigers’ biggest star, Flinging Frankie Filchock, the the storm centre of the Big Four thus far this year, was on the sidelines when it all happened, an infected arm keeping him out of uniform.* * * For a whjle here on Sunday it looked as if the Tigers would overcome an early Al lead and when, after creeping up to only a five point disadvantage, the Tigers took over on their own twenty with their plays clicking it looked as if the visitors might be off to the races, Alouettes had slowed down, but ‘Wagner made a great diving interception of a pass and a couple of plays later he ran it over to clinch it for Als, ’ ALOUETTES SHOWED IMPROVEMENT The Alouettes showed up better against Ottawa and the passing and running of Cates was a pleasant surprise and also a significant factor in their win.In Cates they may have that very needed passing power they have so long sought and at times he even outshone Wagner with his plunging dashes into the rock-ribbed centre of the Hamilton line.Gaudaur played a great game om defense as he continually knocked down the Tiger passes some of which seemed to be thrown more in a blind hope than through any preconceived plan, # % % The Tigers showed little of a ground offense except one great extension play that they shook loose for first down five or six times in the second half.They also unveiled a great kicker, an American named Stephenes from the University of Tennessee, who continually matched or exceeded the fine Iong punts of Kijek, the Als’ fine hoofer, STEPHENES WAS STAR AT TENNESSEE Stephenes was a great running back at Tennessee, but like the other imports he experiences quite a bit of trouble in running back kicks and in dodging outside the ten-yard interference limit.These imports from force of habit, fall behind their backfield mates, expecting them to block, which function they cannot of course perform, whereas the Canuck backs keep ahead of their mates so as to keep eligible for the lateral pass.Anyway, the Tigers looked like a solid team, and with a star in there like Filchock they could still be a threat SATURDAY’S BATTLE SHOULD BE TERRIFIC That white-washing that the Argos handed Ottawa in Toronto comes as a bit of a surprise but also shows that the Torontonians are over .that lethargy that they suffered at te beginning of the season, It indicates that the Scullers are back in their 1947 form, and in Pyzer, who scored their touchdown, they have picked up a .good running back who has thus far overshadowed Copeland.The win was the third in a row for the Argos and once again it was Joe Krol, whose kicking and passing led the way to the Toronto victory, That Argo line must be plenty tough also, for they haven't been scored on in 120 minutes, or two full games of football, both of their last two wins being shutout victories, by 2-0 over Hamilton, and by 8-0 over the mighty Rough Riders.It should be a terrific battle here on Saturday when Krol and Company come to town for the first time this year, but with them they are sure to bring memories of that great game when they edged Als 12-6 in the Big Four playoff last year.Krol will again be a marked man, but they'd better watch Copeland too, for the lean half is far overdue for one of those great days of his that leave the fans comparing him to Bummer Sterling and other old-time greats, , Schwiedler will be back with the Als after missing last Sunday's encounter and he should help swing the scales over to the Als’ favour, Third and second place are at stake in this ball game with the Argos currently leading Alouettes by one game in that coveted spot behind the high-flying Rough Riders, now «ly one game up on Toronto.+ wx Learning to Live Instead of the “three Rs”, children should be taught at HOLLAND BULBS FOR ;
