But hold everything! Came a hus- ky-muscled son of the bush with a hand-saw and did the same stint in a few seconds. We don't and can’t logically decry and trend to greater efficiency inherent in mechanization. But if the spirit of personal initiative, as typified by the hand-saw, is ever totally superseded by the ‘lais- sez-faire’ attitude so often hand in hand with the machine — will be sunk, brother — sunk without a trace.Wedded Bliss Dept. We're glad to have this officl- ally, but it's been pretty widely known for years — chances are that if your wife hurls the Frigidaire at your devoted head in a moment of pique — she loves you, no less. This marital phenomenon came to light in a Cornish divorce court last week.Hubby charged spouse with throwing (2) a knife (b) a poker at him and (c) stabbing his leg with a fork.Hizzoner noted that “variability may be a female defect but it is also one of the great charms of womanhood.Forgiveness in marriage should extend even unto seventy times seven.” And, he added in dismissing the case.most of the dames who 1 THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, APRIL 9th, 1048 Rotary To Hold Annual Public Speaking Contest Dates for the annual Boys Speaking Contest sponsored by the Rotary Club of Montreal have been settled, it is announced by Contest Chairman, Roland Gom- ery, with three contests in Montreal and ten schools to participate.Preliminaries will be held at the Montreal Westward and Verdun Rotary Clubs; one daughter, Mrs.J.S.Wallace: a brother, Stewart; a sister, Mrs.Margaret McIntosh and four grandchildren.Rev.Canon Gilbert Oliver of- ficated at the service, held in the chapel of Jos.C.Wray & Bro.Interment took place at Mount and the representatives of the National Government in South China all pitched in.Never before had a social agency in Canton had such instantaneous success.Stories of' increasing Y support have come from all over China. The Nanking Association just one year after restoration is entirely self-supporting, Shanghai, outstripping other welfare organizations, raised $800 million (Chinese inflated currency) on a $500 million goal. And the Kweiyang Association doubled the goal it went out for.The over-all picture for China’s Y.M.C.A.’s shows membership increased since the war's end to 150,000.The total number reached is about 2,750,000.Associa= tions number 142, counting the 100 student Y.M.C.A.s.Fourteen suspended or destroyed city Y's reopened in 1946 amd eight more in 1947.In Manchuria, the Mukden Y, outside the Communist area, has once again opened its doors.Shih Shang-tah, its General Secretary, wlio in 1939 fled to Free China from a Japanese jail and founded the Kweiyang Association, returned home in the winter of 1946 to find the top floor of the 3-storiea Y building destroyed by fire.In tems peratures of 30 degrees below zero he then set to work and levelled the third floor into a roof. The present two-storied Y now runs an adult school for 670 people, an outside orphanage for 500 children and a student shelter on the campus of North- Eastern University.STOVE CAUSES FIRE Fire, caused by an electric stove in a cupboard converted to a kitchenette at 354 Kensington avenue, resulted in a call to the Westmount Fire Department for assistance in putting out the blaze on Monday afternoon. The fire was extinguished with little difficulty, and water and fire damage were held to a minimum.Barrister and Solicitor HOWARD S.ROSS, K.C.Department for the closing of estates of Deceased Persons.Telephone HA.9238 87 St.James St.West AIR FORCE HAVERSACKS FISHING RODS .& Wittnauer re.RAINCOATS KHAKI SHIRTS SUN CLASSES, Polaroid SHOVELS, an all time low at SOLDERING IRONS, USED FILES .FOOT PUMPS, .Rubber Dinghies, etc.8-DAY CLOCKS, New, Waltham, ARMY & NAVY COVERALLS .FIRST AID KITS, complete .5-GALLON STEEL CANS, New .SILK & NYLON PARACHUTES .SCREW DRIVERS, 6 inch - Red Wood Handle .OTHER ITEMS: Motor Boat Lights, Tools, Water Cans, Lighting Units, Canvas Buckets, Tool Boxes, Toasters, WAR SURPLUS AIR FGRCE BLANKETS, all wool, new .eerie.$4.25 & $4.50 Elgin, Bulova MARIO .$8.50 .$3.75 - "$5.00 - $6.95 secs cc 00020000.$4.95 A real buy at 95 $3.45 Special.$4.25 cer en $2.80 - $2.95 + "$3.50 BY cere .55 à ‘$14.00 & $15.00 1S 100 Watt $2.95 200 Watt $6.75 | ean .….$400 |A Bar Sa 5 Our stock is of such variety that no list will cover it.We suggest you drop in and see us for real, practical bargains.M.& L.SALES CO, 4521 St.James St.W., Near the Glen 5 Minutes from Victoria & Sherbrooke by Glen Bus WE.1345 JRE ete né er Ie ~ ——— Rae a a a Same ate Sani tt FE ——- EAE range" [ED VV ERR Hardwood Floors REPAIRED - REFINISHED .SUPPLIED LAID - FINISHED: - CLEANED “47 YEARS IN oy WESTMOUNT" WEDDING GIFTS Che J A.Ross Grafton : He ee vera = Free E jme COMPANY we 2323 4Ç > "0 HMAN se : ree 3 ST € A : ; Severe coughing spasms, with a “crowing” sound, should be regarded with extreme suspicion. The doctor, or local health authorities, should be asked about protective measures against this-deadly complaint.Weekly Review Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi By LEWIS MILLICAN crammed carriages of inferno millions had to make a journey, Gandhi would go third class, too.But his train was a asked by one of her boarders what she thought of Mahatma Gandhi. That about sums up the average person's opinion —if it can be called an opinion. To the Western mind Gandhi was and still is an enigma, although he has been generally hailed as a saint. Some have even gone so far as to compare him with the Man of Nazareth.Woodrow Wyatt, a member of a British Parliamentary Delegation which went to India in 1946, gives his impressions of Gandhi in an article appearing in the New Statesman and Nation of February 7.The article is entitled “Saint ink Gandhi's food was the same as that of the peasants, but he is said to have eaten “much more than they did, or he would not have retained his health and vigor. His days of silence seemed to Europeans to be conducted with an eye more to their political effect than on their religious value.” He never undertook a fast “unto death” when he was in the hands of the British, as the risk THR EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, APRIL 9th, 1948 Politics,” and Mr.Wyatt's story reveals Gandhi more as a politician than a saint.Nevertheless he concludes: “He did not claim to be a saint, but he had better right to the title than many who have passed the test at Rome.” The first meeting with the Mahatma was on a hot and “sticky” evening at Madras when he addressed the delegation in a “rambling discourse delivered from the veranda floor of the house in the centre of the camp, as we sat uncomfortably shifting on our chairs in a semi-circle around him, and lasted for nearly two hours.” While there were flashes of wit and penetration in the address, Mr.Wyatt says that it left thé delegation baffled.“It seemed to be impossible to settle anything with such a man.” When the members of the delegation pressed for “practical suggestions on the course our Government should follow, the only advice we got was, ‘Get off our backs,’ with no indication as to how it was to be done,” says Mr.Wyatt.“It is easy enough,” continues Mr.Wyatt, “to describe his simplicity, his asceticism, his days of silence and his fasts as playacting; as many British administrators did so, perhaps rightly from their standpoint. To travel third class in India is a nightmare experience against a back ground of wooden seats and that they might not release him was too great.“But that did not diminish their genuiness, and the diminish their genuineness, and the Indians knew that they were says Mr.Wyatt.“His defects by Western standards were not defects at all in, India. His position was understood perfectly .He represented their hopes and fears articulately when they could only feel them vaguely.Gandhi knew that the Indian character when it turns to violence can be as ugly as that of any nation in the world.” Mr.Wyatt says that Gandhi had the greatest respect for British institutions and culture, and for the British soldiers.“One .- * LETTERS to the EDITOR Letters are reproduced exactly as received as a public service. The paper does not accept any responsibility for them.Dear Sir: Please find enclosed a poem that I have written. This is not an ordinary poem, but one that I have written out of gratitude for the City of Westmount.I have just recently returned from spending two years at the Boys Farm and Training School of Shawbridge, P.Q.,and you know with what opposition a boy meets with when he has been there.I chose the City of Westmount to live in, and to my surprise have been very happy ever since.I work at the Westmount greenhouses doing gardening work and no one ever mentions that I have been to the B.F.T.S.And so I have written this poem and if by chance it is ever printed it would be nice for everyone to know why it was written.Yery truly yours, G.Henderson Amid a group of bustling cities, Filled with people beyond count, Stands out one above the others, The charming City of Westmount.Gone the rules of other countries, Here's where friendship reigns supreme, Just as though this happy city, Had come out a passing dream. Its streets are lined with stately maples, Oaks and elms dot every one, And in spring when winter grapples, With the warmth and golden sun.Tulips, daffs and wonderous flowers, Fill its parks and building fronts, Like an artist a portrait painting, The earth, its gayest colours hunt. But best of all I like this city, Resting on a mountain side, For the care, love and pity, Gave to me when all wasepride. With open arms they took me to it, Gave a home and job to me, If only other people knew it, Just what Westmount can really be.Princess’ Wedding Ring Made Of Welsh Gold Many people were surprised to learn that Welsh gold was used in the negotiations broke down, they would start an uprising and throw us out by force.‘Yes,’ he replied, ‘If we were to start a rising, I should hate to think that the British were no longer tough enough to deal with it.It would be your duty to suppress it, and I hope you would.’” At another point, when he was asked if he would tell Congress to adopt a policy of non-violence towards the Mos- lim League if they attempted to become ‘masters of India,” Gandhi replied: “Yes, I should certainly urge Congress to pursue the course of non-violence— but I shouldn't expect them to.” “That,” adds Mr.Wyatt, “was typical of so many of his utterances which to the Westerner had a faintly dishonest flavor. But there was no dishonesty or real inconsistency in his make-up.The drawback was more that he so faithfully and accurately mirrored the tortuousness and simplicity of the Indian mind.never consciously did he do or advocate anything that was wrong or untrue.” Mr, Wyatt says that in some respects Gandhi's conscience was similar to that of the old Non< conformists in England.“That, no doubt, was the reason why Sankey and Moody hymns( and he was distressed that they hal lost their former popularity in England) made so strong an appeal to him, together with the non-ceremonial aspects of Christe ianity.” His Prayer Meetings are sald to have been a “mixture of every creed, and through them he sought to release the best in Hinduism. In that he succeeded, as he succeeded triumphantly, against misunderstanding, in carrying his religious beliefs into the realm of practical affairs,” says Mr.Wyatt.These intimate sidelights on the character of the Indian leader reveal him as a very complex personality.Although he was a typical Hindu, he was in many respects a typical Englishman of the latter part of the nineteenth century, and the two were at cross-purposes.But even toward the end he harked back to the memories of his early associations in England, and when the question of a new national flag for India was being considered he favored the inclusion of the Union Jack in the.emblem.JE fr ata Rt.Rev.Dr.Jones Goes To Britain Sunday evening's service at Calvary United Church will be the final one for the Right Rev, Dr.T.W.Jones, MA, DD, in Canada before leaving for the Members Day Programme Success At Victoria Hall By JOAN FARLEY The ladies of the Notre Dame de Grace Women's Club held their last meeting in Victoria Hall, on Friday, in the form of a concert consisting of various displays of the different groups, connected with the Notre de Grace Women's Club. The president, Mrs.Norman B.Muir, very charmingly welcomed the members and representatives of several clubs, followed by the Members’ Day Chairman, and second vice-presi- dent, Mrs.J.H.Maude, discussed the phases of the Notre Dame de Grace Women's club life and who gave a preview of the Members’ Day Programme. The first group on the programme was the “Civics Group” who gave a panel discussion on the “Curtis Report on Housing” discussing the scarcity of dwellings and the over-crowdedness of living quarters, by stating and answering questions. The decision was that the need of a housing programme is required to re-create certain Canadian communities. The civics chairman was Mrs.W.M.Hick, while the members of the civics group were Mrs.J.W.Parks, Mrs.R.W.Varey, Mrs.J.B.Miller, Mrs.H.S.Marion, Mrs.R.S.Grant, Mrs.C.T.Groome, and Mrs.T.D.Handrahan.All had the pleasure .of hearing the newly formed choir, under the direction of Mrs.R.Uden, L.R.S.M.,, who also chose the selections which were very beautifully rendered indeed. The first number was a stirring rendition of “Bless This House”, followed by “Thanks be to God”, a spirited “Hey Ho, Come to the Fair”, and “I Passed by Your Window”, and “You'll Get There.in the Morning”, as.an encore.Congratulations to the choir and of course to Mrs.Uden, who did a splendid job. Also, of course goes congratulations to the accompanist, Mrs.S.S.Beamish.The choir consisted of Mrs.C.E.Bowers, Mrs.F.D.Crowley, Mrs.H.Giles, Mrs.G.J.Mallinson, Mrs.J.H.Maude, Mrs.J.S.Miller, Mrs.J.Rice, Mrs.B.Sutcliffe, Mrs.S.Turner, Fashions and Flights of Fancy, made possible by the Sewing Group, who chose, made, and modelled the garments themselves, and who were instructed by Madame O, W.Miess, who Dame also acted as commentator. An interesting fact was that for some of the ladies, it was the first time that they had ever attempted or completed a garment. The results were certainly amazing. An amusing anecdote was told by Mrs.J.Rice, on how she completed her ensemble. The Drama Group then presented their interpretation of “Charade, by Philip Johnson, and directed by Janet Campbell.which was both refreshing and amusing, and, referring to the climax, was surprising.Janet Campbell certainly created a sensation by playing a self-satis- fied, self-sure, and devilish Scottish cook, to perfection.Leonora Thompson, as Ivy, portrayed a young and rather simple maid, whom everyone in the audience, I am sure, thought would be the heroine. Then came the heroine herself, Dorothy Turner, as Mrs.Lockett, who played a pathetic, god-hearted and sweet, middle-aged charwoman.Thelma Japp, as Iris, acted as the usual pretty, movie-struck teen-aged girl, who was in this case, another mald, and Rosario, played by Peg Seller, was a career woman and director of movies, who had only one thought on her mind, which was who should plav the varv intricata rnla in who | .* HINTS O Fashions A gem for the bridal catch-all for dust cloths that are dirty, ditto brushes and brooms, as well as other -miscellany, much of it soiled. So it is a good idea, once in a while to go over the cleaning equipment closet, and to weed out and dispose of useless items, then to clean and rearrange the necessary equipment in an orderly manner. This sort of cleanup does more than bring order out of] chaos, it reveals what replacements are necessary in order to do a proper housecleaning job.Hung from Hooks For efficiency and to prolong the life and wear of cleaning tools, brushes, brooms, mops, etc.should be neatly hung from hooks placed high enough in the closet so the bottoms escape the floor.Shallow shelves, arranged in step formation, are better than wide shelves for holding bottles and other containers of cleaning products, as well as soap bars and packages.Keep clean dust clothes in their own special container.Staple Supplies It is helpful, especially if one has to take care of a house, to make up a small cleaning basket for toting.Use a basket with a handle, and equip it with staple supplies, so that only special items have to be added for specific tasks, Soaps and soap powders of all kinds, dust cloths and wiping cloths, a sponge or scrub rag, polish wax and a spot remover comprise the usual standard cleaning supplies Some homemakers also include a pencil and a small memo pad on which to THR EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, APRIL 9th, 1948 Picaim Island Little did the nine mutineers of H.M.S.Bounty who landed in 1789 on Pitcairn Island and married Polynesian women suspect that they would become human guinea pigs for anthropologists and students of heredity. The motion picture, “Mutiny on the Bounty” starring Clark Gable, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone and which starts Saturday until Tuesday at the Avenue Theatre, tells the true story of these mutineers and how they found the Paradise Isle.’ Cut off from the world, that little colony, which now numbers 200, has made it possible to substitute solid facts for the fancies that underlie race prejudice. No wonder that Dr.H.L.Shapiro of the American Museum of Natural History should have spent a fortnight on Pitcairn Island to supplement the information gathered by past anthropological expeditions on the family histories of those who sprang from the Bounty’s mutineers, and thus to supply us with an Almanac de Gotha far more valuable and trustworthy than that in which the marriage and offspring of royalty and nobility are recorded. The tales of few places hold the glamour of that which is told of Pitcairn Island. The account of the British mutineers and a few native Tahitian women who settled this bit of land in the Polynesian group is of the sort that makes the man at his desk or bench complain that life has not fairly distributed its romance.Although they are descended from two distinct racial groups, -the present generation of Pitcairn Islanders are “strong, husky, above the average in stature, intelligent, chdrming people, hospitable and very friendly.Dr.Shapiro explains, “the islanders show no ill effects of several generations of intermarriage. They are taller, and at least in some respects appear to be better developed physically than either the English or the Polynesian races. The men and women of the island speak English, and a sort of patois of their own.” A chief magistrate and a council constitute the present form of government, It has little to do.There is equal suffrage and men and women are eligible for public office.Dr.Shapiro found that government on the island was conducted “very well.” The Pitcairn islander has no use for money. He does crave, however, all the magazines telling of the outside world and exchanges his most valued possessions for them.Second Attraction Also on the same program is the delightful Technicolor musical “The Harvey Girls” starring Judy Garland, John Hodiak, Ray Bol- Trinity Players Name Play Cast Supporting Peter Armstrong and Olive Sanborn Lead in the leading roles of “This Happy Breed” by Noel Coward—being presented by the Trinity Players from April 14th to 17th inclusive at Trinity Memorial Hall—are Mary Lindsay Kerr, as Aunt Sylvia and Alf Redgell as the friendly neighbor.Others in the cast are, Marion Keith, Judith Chambers, Joan Wilson, James Trenholme, John Martyn-Baxter, Judith Brown, Leslie Roscoe and Muriel McMaster. The action of the play takes place in England and tells the story of a middle class English family #during the period from 1919 to 1939 up to the days of Munich and “Peace in Our Time”.Basil Donn, C.D.A,, is directing the production.FAN MAIL RECORD Bing Crosby, who plays the title role in Paramount's “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court,” sends out 250,000 photos & year in response to requests from fans throughout the world.AT THE AVENUE SATURDAY! PAGE FOURTEEN #4 THR EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, APRIL oth, 1948 Converters Win Eastern Title Meet ‘Windsor April 16, 17 By GEORGE COCHRANE Westmount's Canadian Converters Junior basketball crew will journey to Windsor, Ont., next week to take on a Windsor cage quintet in a two-game, total points series, for what will virtually amount to the Junior championship of Canada. The Converters copped the Eastern Canada title last week-end by taking a two-game series from Dalhousie University, Maritime champs, by the one-sided count of 118-44.The local larrigans took the first contest 54-21, the second 64-23.The games were played last Thursday and Friday nights on the Converters’ home floor, the Westmount Junior High School gym.The Thursday battle was the* more spirited of the two.The visitors, whose yellow sweat suits which they wore in pre-game workouts, were something new to these parts and caused considerable comments, never gave up trying. But the Westmounters, led by Captain Jack Dudley who sent 20 points swishing through the hoop, just couldn’t be stopped. The Converters had a little too much in all departments for the Dalhousie lads as they checked like leeches, hall handled beautifully and steadily built up a lead.John Field and Gordie MacLeod were next in line for the winners in the point-getting department with 13 and 9 respectively.Red Shaw led the Maritimes with five points.Second Game Walkaway Entering the second game of the series with a 33-point lead, the Converters could have elected to play a strictly defensive game. But instead, much to the relief of the 300 spectators who jammed the gallery to see the tilt, they elected to maintain the pressure and had sent eight points swishing through the cords before the Black Make this a CANADIAN TRAVEL YEAR Canada offers infinite variety © SO MUCH TO SEE! © SO MUCH TO DO !
