[" The Ex aminer Serving the City of Westmount, Garden Suburb of Canada's Metropolis VOL.XIX, No.25 Well-Known Local Floral Clock Operating ‘During the past week, West- mount’s well-known floral clock, situated near Victoria Hall on Sherbrooke Stre~t.has been set’ up for the summer. This well-known landmark and tourist attraction, the first of its kind in North America; was designed after the pattern of the famous floral clock in Edinburgh, Scotland, and was established hers in the year 1926, during Mayor P.W.McLagan’s term of office. With the exception of the years during World War II, the clock has been a continuous feature in Westmount during the summer months, The clock face is 19 feet in diameter, and approximately 6,000 plants are used in making up the design.Dwarf plants, or plants that can stand continuous clipping have to be used.Among the plants usually used for the purpose are Echevaria, Santolina, Red and Green Alternanthera (or Telanthéra) and various varieties of Achyranthus (or Irisene). The mechanism of the clock is located below the mound at the top of the clock. With the exception of periods of wet weather, when the hands become weighted with water and out of balance, the clock keeps good time.In recent years, floral clocks have become more numerous about the world, although they are still uncommon. Some of the places where they are to be seen are Springfield, Mass.; Washington, D.C.; Ostend, Belgium; In- tertakon, Switzerland, and Queensland, Australia. Two Burglars Draw Five Years In Penitentiary Two young men who were detained and arrested by Lt.Baker on .charges of loitering in West- mount recently, pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of burglar's tools and a fully loaded automatic pistol which were found on their persons and were arraigned and sentenced on Friday morning.Ralph Powell and Robert Mitchell, -both 23, years of age and of no permarent abode, were both sentenced to five years in the penitentiary.Several charges also are pending against them in Montreal.Dr.Stern To Attend Conference Of Rabbis Dr.Harry J.Stern, Rabbi of Temple Emanu-El, plans to attend the 59th annual convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, to take place June 22nd through June 28th at Kansas City, Missouri, Dr.Stern is a member of a number of important committees at’ the and Alderman W.S.Greene will attend a confa-ence of the Federation of Mayors and Municipalities, to be held in Halifax, June 22-25.Wayfaring Dog Disturbs Work At Print Plant The routine of work in the Circulation Department at the Examiner was sadly disrupted on Tuesday morning, when a large, white dog strayed into the office and all the members of the various branches took time out to pet and feed it.Soon the word had passed around the entire plant and there was quite a crowd on hand to see the show. The dog's owner was notified and Miss Marion Van Der Walde, 680 Roslyn Avenue, Westmount, came down to pick up the wayfaring animal. She revealed that she had had the dog for less than a week, but that it was pedigreed and lacked but one point from being a championship dog.The dog is a Great Pyrenee.Miss Van Der Walde then took the dog and left and the members of the staff regretfully returned to their work.Westmount “Y” Officers Attend YMCA Conference John F.Lewis, Anti-Horn Blowing Drive Pays Off Excessive blowing of the horn of a “jeep” parked in front of the Avenue Theatre recently, led to the arrest of the driver and the discovery that the vehicle had been stolen. As Constable J.McAleer approached the “jeep” to investigate the reason for excessive sounding of its horn, it rushed away down Greene avenue and turned west on St, Catherine street.By fortunate coincidence, at that moment a prowl car appeared on the scene.Constable McAleer jumped aboard and it gave chase to the fleeing jeep, which finally was captured near the Glen.Taken to the police station, the driver, Paul Goodin, 125 Bridge street, Montreal, was found to have stolen the vehicle, which belonged to the Brooklyn Window Cleaning Company, on Milton Street.Charged with blowing his horn unnecessarily, impudent driving, and failure to carry a driver's license or registration for the car, he pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined $10 and costs on each charge or 30 days in jail.He was then handed over to the Montreal Police Department for arraignment on the car theft.Housing Need Said Cause Of Robbery Sentences are now pending in the Montreal courts in the case of two brothers, Robert and Edward Brady, aged 19 and 18 respectively, and another man, Albert Beede, who admitted burglarizing the Hodge Auto Parts Store, 5028 Sherbrooke Street West. They were apprehended on Friday, June 4th about 2.30 a.m, when Westmount Police, suspicious of their actions, stopped the cab in which they were riding to question them.Four radios were on the back seat of the cab and the men, under questioning, admitted .that they had robbed the Hodge store of two radios and $40 in cash. They had effected entry by climbing the fire escape and forcing the door at the top.Held at the Westmount Police station overnight, they were turned over to the Montreal Police Department. They appeared in the Montreal Police Court the following day where they also confessed to robberies on St.James St.Judge Gerald Almond learned that the two brothers were not living at home and held sentence over to Friday, pending representations of their parents.Robert Brady gave his address as 3494 Marcil Avenue, while his hrother and Beede listed their address as the Russell Hotel.Judge Almond stated that he blamed the housing shortage, necessitating the two brothers living apart from their parents, for their advent into criminal ways in which they had joined a west-end gang and had engaged in thieving activities.Pleading guilty to charges of loitering in Westmount, each of the three was sentenced to a fine of $40 and costs.= PRICE—THREE CENTS Rotary Carnival Entertains, Proceeds Help Good Works This year's Rotary Carnival in Westmount Park got off to a good start on Tuesday evening, with a large and happy crowd which thoroughly enjoyed itself at the many attractions provided for its entertainment.Unlike tHe opening evening last year, when proceed ings were dampened somewhat by sporadic showers, the weather man this week provided ideal weather for the event.A wide variety of entertainment has been provided for the carnival goers, and the spirit of general gaiety is enhanced by strings of multi-colored lights which set off the many attractions in the booths operated by the Rotarians and their helpers who have turned Carnival men for the oc-* casion.Seventh Consecutive Carnival This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Rotary Club of Westmount has held its annual carnival in Westmount Park.Started in a modest way in 1942, under the difficulties of war conditions, this annual festival of fun has grown to become a major operation for Westmount Rotarians — an outdoor carnival that has won its place as a fixture ‘in the community life of the district.Headed by Rotarian S.B.Cay- ford as chairman, the carnival committee consists of J.H.Col- ton, honourary treasurer; R.E.Edwards, publicity; D.Kerr, stock; C.T.Medler, tickets; P.Delgado, construction; W.H.Girard, lightening; W.F.Close, purchasing; W.G.Moxley, decorations; E.A.Everson, programme; A.M.Murray, personnel; S.A.Neilson, secretary and F.Ken- wood, advertising. The carnival features a larger number of booths than heretofore offering a greater veriety of entertainment. An innovation this year consisted of quiz programs made on the grounds of the midway and aired over radio station C.J.A.D.All precautions are being taken to see to the protection and safety of the public and policing of the grounds, and information service are in the hands of the Young Men's Section of the Board of Trade.Proceeds Help Good Work The Rotary Carnival enables the Rotary Club of Westmount to live up to its moral obligations, voluntarily assumed through the years, of contributing substantially to the upkeep, well-being and expansion of such institutions aa the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the Julius Richardson Convalescent Hospital for Children.Nor would the Club be able to lend its support to the extent it does to crippled children’s work, or to the Unity Boys’ Club, or other under- fakings to the general benefit of the community.Remember, you can enjoy yourself at the carnival, playing the games and joining in the happy spirit of the others who do likewise.Yes, you'll enjoy yourself, and you'll be glad you went and contributed to the good works carried on by the Rotarians with the Carnival proceeds.UNITY CLUB PICNIC On Sunday, the Westmount Unity Youth Group will hold a picnic at Calumet Beach, Point Calumet which is situated some twenty odd miles from Montreal.Being the first major event of the summer on the Club's agenda of activities, a great deal of planning has been done to be sure the picnic is a success. There will be a softball game swimming race, boating and many other events. The Group will leave Gentral Station at 9.20 a.m.D.S.T.Anyone requiring further information should get in touch with the Committee Chairman John Wakely.Playgr'nd Parade Plus Pageantry Plans Progressing Details are now available on the Westmount's playground parade and elections which will be held early in July. The date for this event has been advanced from that originally set in order to fit in with the schools programme.A Mayor from each of the three playgrounds — Westmount, Stay- nor and Prince Albert — will be elected by ballot, and also a junior fire chief and chief of police.Elections will be held in each of the Playgrounds one week prior to the parade.A junior beauty queen will be chosen by the audience in a ceremony in Westmount Park.Nominations for these positions should be handed in to the supervisors in any of the playgrounds as soon as possible or Phone F1.6975.Election campaigns when measured in volume of production, it is insignificant.Nevertheless I hold that these criticisms are valuable. They have brought forth the answering facts.Capitalism has its faults and its weaknesses. It has never been as strong on publicity as it should have been but that is being remedied now.If I were looking for a job I would seek for a firm with a highly paid management. It means higher pay and better conditions for the workers.“THIS CAR COST ME—21 HOGS” What's money?is the title of a study released by the Farm Journal which describes how inflation has affected the farmer's purchasing power. An Illinbis farmer is quoted as saying in 1947 that his $3,000 ear was “the cheapest car I have bought in a good many years!” He explained that it cost him “lots fewer hogs than the last one.” Other figures in the study are a basic lesson in economics. What's Money?compares various manufaetured produets in dollar prices and their equivalent prices in farm producés for the years 1940 and 1947.The price of an automobile increased from $699 to $1,219, but the 1940 car cost the farmer 17 beef cattle while the 1947 model cost him only 13 beef cattle.À refrigeartor’s price rose from $154 to $194.However, the farmer had to sell 20 hogs to buy the 1940 model, but the 1947 model cost only 5 hogs.$90 washing machine was worth 107 | bushels of wheat in 1940; in 1947 the same mike of washing machine cost $150, the value of only 78 bushels, accordicg to the study.“BLUE BLOODS FROM CANADA” The story of Canada’s argricultural industry — with particular emphasis on its export phase — is pleasingly told in “Blue Bloods from Canada,” a 16mm motion picture just completed by the Associated Screen News studio, of Notre Dame de Grace, Montreal, for the Department of Trade and Commerce, Ottawa. The main theme of the story — the successful breeding of domestic animals along seientific lines — has been skillfully blended into a half-hour narrative film by Director Jack Chisholm. In the development of pure bred animals and poultry, the Dominion and Provincial Agricultural College and Experimental Farms have played a great part.Through their guidance and help, the art of animal husbandry in Canada has reached a high peak and has acquired a world-wide reputation.Due to the varied climatic conditions, Canadian breeders have succeeded in developing sturdier and more virile breeds than any other livestock country.“Blue Bloods from Canada.” Filmed in Kodachrome and in full sound, it will shortly | be released in four languages — English, French, Spanish and Portugese — to Canadian Trade Commissioners in thirty-eight countries. The various breed associations in Canada are planning pamphlets and other sales aids telling the story of each breed. This material is also to be distributed by the Trade Commissioners throughout the world .- oe—oc—oc >o< »oe-—>oc 00 J BOOK REVIEW By H.S.Ross Lx] 050 C00.C0 C01 0 0 0 C—O 0K The Government of Canada by His illuminating comments 0K >o< 2000 on XXI entitled Political Parties and CURE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1948 Can.School of Electricity Celebrates Quarter Century R.MacGregor Dawson, M.A.D.Sc.(Econ.), Professor of Political Economy, University of Toronto. The University of Toronto Press, Toronto.Pages 662.Price $5,50.In this volume we are given a brilliant study of Canadian Government and no one familiar with the trenchant style and ready wit of the author will he disappointed.Stores of knowledge, sound philosophy, clear organization and orderly thinking are evident throughout the many pages and chapters which will be a source book for those interested in this all important subject and that should include everyone In our dountry and many in other countries. It will be a pity if this book does not find its way inte libraries, large and small, throughout Canada and in particular High School libraries.Professor Dawson deals in order with constitutional development, the constitution, the executive, the administration, the legislature, the judiciary and the pol- tical parties.tthe weakness of our governmental system are based upon appreciation of the values of traditional forms. His book will not only lead students to examine critically our Institutions but inspire in them respect and admiration for their many good features. This is the second volume in the Canadian Government Series, of which Professor Dawson is Editor. As the author points out in his the first descriptive account of the government of Canada and here we are given the second, While every chapter 1s filled with interest I enjoyed (as would any reader) Chapters IX, X and XI The Cabinet and its position, personnel, functions and organization; The Civil Service; The House of Commons; The Judiciary with much more space given to the Courts of the Province of Quebec than in most of such volumes written in other provinces and this also applies to the very thorough study made of the political parties in the Province of Quebec as discussed in chapter Preface, Professor Clokie wrote.Chapter XXII Party Organization.Chapter XXII Party Activities and Problems 1s very frank and revealing. The Appendices set out in full The British North America Act, 1867, and the amendments in 1871, 1875, 1886, 1915, 1940 and 1946.There is a helpful and exhaustive index and it is interesting to note that the first reference reads: Abbott, D.C., 240n-241n, 424 and the second reference reads: Abbott, Sir J.J, C.209, 342.The author is a Maritimer by birth and received his early education in Nova Scotia. After receiving his B.A.and M.A.at Dal- housie University he was granted an AM.by Harvard and an M.Sc.(Econ.) and D.Sc.(Econ) from the University of London. He has lectured on Economics and Political Science at Dalhousie, Rutgers, Saskatchewan and Toronto and has contributed many articles to periodicals and is the author of several notable books, including The Civil Service of Canada, Constitutional Issues in Cansda, Canada in World Affairs: Two Yéars of War, Next week will mark the Silver Anniversary of the Canadian School of Electricity—a Montreal institution which has been responsible for the graduation of more than three thousand students in practical electricity in Junior Electrical Engineering, Radio Engineering and Electrical Drafting. The Canadian School over the years has trained an average of four hundred students a year and, during the war years turned out several hundred technically trained men who were sought by and welcomed by army, navy and air force. Many of the school’s graduates are in top line positions today with leading Canadian corpora- ‘tions and it was recently stated by the Personnel Manager of the biggest electrical manufacturing company in the country that, nical position can show a diploma from the Canadian School, he is hired at once. The School's diplomas are recognized by both the Provincial and Federal Governments. The Canadian School of Electricity was the first in Canada to introduce ‘’shop laboratory” meth- .jods of training in practical elec- | trieity and junior electrical engineering, radio engineering and drafting.Today, as well as these subjects, the School is teaching electronics and television—the two sciences of tomorrow that are here today and will provide some of the most lucrative positions of | the next twenty-five years. The Canadian School writes its own textbaoks, treatises, and man- ‘uscripts, and produces all of its own laboratory material.Prime mover in the Canadian School of Electricity, around its activities revolve, is the Principal and President, Morrie E.Coshof, | B.Sc., M.E., A.EB., who has directed the affairs of the School since 1924 and enjoys the respect of leading educationalists, plant superintendents and personnel managers throughout the Province of Quebec and all Canada. It is to Mr.Coshof that many successful businessmen today look back with whenever an applicant for a tech-, dragging a small boy, Morrie E.Coshof gratitude for his personal interest, guidance and encouragement during those first crucial years. To Mr.Ceshof x boy's first job is ‘often the most important of his entire life for it frequently happens that that first job determines the entire course of his career. The Canadian School of Electricity has reason to be proud of its record and to celebrate its Silver Ammiversary.Twenty-five years aga it was started with only fourteen students.Today its graduates are spread all over the world and many have gone to the top in fields of electricity, elee- tronies, radio and television.SUSPENSE large flustered woman, sailed through the station barrier and approached her waiting husband.“Hello,” said the man.A “You're late.” “Oh, don’t talk about it, Alf,” replied his wife.“I never ‘ad such a time! but for the ages and reinvestment of profits is a reserve against hard times, a guarantee of stability.x * { Calvary Church | * x Services of worship in Calvary United Church, on Sunday will be conducted by the Assistant Minister, Maxwell ‘ Reader, B.A., at 11 a.m, and 7.30 p.m.This Sunday is being celebrated as Father's Day and the subject of the sermon to be delivered in the morning will be “The Prodigal Son's Father,” and at the evening service the theme will be “In Greener Pastures”.The Sunday School Picnic will be held on Saturday, June 26th.Buses will leave the Church at 9.30 a.m.for Calumet (Robert) Beach. For details call A.E.Robinson, WE.4783.‘Westmount Baptist Church Sherbrooke St.‘ W.and Roslyn Ave, ’ John Alexander Johnston, D.D., Minister Hibbert Troop, Organist and Choirmaster 11.00 a.m.“The Man Who Wrought No Miracle”.‘All Things that John Spoke of his Man Were True.” 9.15 Bible School.730 pm “What Had Iappened to eter?” The King Furious! Interest When out of town visitors come to visit us, we make a point of selecting the most interesting places to show them, and for example if you have not already visited the NEW MORGAN TRUST GALLERIES, 2085 City Councillor St, then mark this special spot with an X.I call it NEW because it has undergone a vast change in the last year, and there may be some of you who having attended auction sales here years ago, are not now aware that this practice was discontinued some time ago.The important change made has been that no article for sale will be received in à poor condition, because if repairs are necessary, they must be made before the article is sent to the MORGAN TRUST GALLERIES.Another point of interest to note is, that nowhere in Canada can there be found such an elaborte collection of china, antique and modern furniture, paintings, and domestic and oriental rugs. The china room is worth a visit in itself, as here you will find some of the most exquisite pieces, and though hundreds of years old, are still in perfect condition. In this room are also displayed many silver articles, candelabras, entree dishes, soup tureens, and I am sure that many of your friends will be interested in exploring this enchanting room for gifts to bring back home, and at prices that cannot be duplicated in the United States. If you are looking for period furniture there is no place in Montreal where such a vari:d assortment is to be found. You will appreciate the way one is permitted to weave leisurely in and out through all this wonderful collection.* The Nignt Of Nights June ushers in Graduations and Weddings, which bring back happy memories and call for celebrations. The question of where to go in warm weather is easily answered when the occasion is such a special one, and that is, the one and only NORMANDIE ROOF, which is air conditioned so that one may dance and dine with indifference to the heat outside.Last week I met GEORGIE PRICE while rehearsing his songs for this week's show at “THE ROOF”.It is always an.inspiration to meet these artists while rehearsing, for when before the public their routine often appears so easy that one is apt to lose sight of the fact of long hours of preparation put in by the singer.Georgie is an artist not to be missed, with his Impressions of Broadway satellites, and his own inimitable way of singing the old time songs like “Mamy”, “Carolina in the Morning”, etc. Then comes one of the funniest parodies on the trials and tribulations of the income tax payer, sung to the tune of Largo Al Factotum, from the Barber of Seville. If you want a good laugh, then don't miss GEORGIE PRICE with his wit, comedy songs and patter.Georgie told me that he is the only actor with a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. He said that he always looks forward to coming to Montreal and thinks the Canadians are the most wonderful people on earth, and never misses a trip to the Laurentians.“THE ROOF” with gay continental atmosphere lends itself to celebrations such as graduation and weddings. With the delicious cuisine and enjoyable music of Neil Golden and Peter Barry's Rhumba band, a good time will be had by all who come here.LA % + Lasting Memories æ + Happy Sunny Days The old fashioned styles may be back, but the twentieth century sports minded girl has not changed, and the peaches and cream complexion that went with the Gibson girl era must ‘give way to the golden tan that ail women are so proud to have.We read about the benefits of the sun’s rays, but how dangerous they can be if not guarded against. From now on the wee tots, and Mom and Dad will be exposing their skin to this wonderful health restorer, but first procure these three essentials for the summer's enjoyment.DUOLANE, a suntan lotion and insect repellent combined. This lotion has excellent cosmetic properties. It contains skin-softening substances which render it highly beneficial to the skin, so that it may be applied even to a babies skin, without harm.If you are working in the garden, you will be amazed how a few drops of this cream lotion over the arms and hands will prevent sunburn, ang also drive away any flies that may be buzzing around you.I found this preparation most refreshing as it is non- greasy and dries so quickly. Before your skin has had its full share of the sun, apply SUNO- LANE CREAM and watch your skin take on that golden tan, so that by the time you are ready for your summer vacation, your snappy new bathing suit can be donned without looking anaemic. If you are spending a weekend in the country be sure and bring a bottle of IR-OL for the black flies. With this threesome you are assured of an enjoyable time never offered before. All drug stores and sports shops have the THREE preparations.* * * For years now the Saguenay trip has been and for years to come, certainly will be for many honeymooners their choice for the wedding trip.Having enjoyed this wonderful trip myself last year I can readily appreciate its enormous popularity.- “4 If by chance you are going to be one of the fortunate ones this year, before Parker Is Favourite The biggest favourite in any of the five divisions in the tournament is Frankie Parker, almost an odds-on choice to win the men’s singles title, after his convincing display in winning the Belgian and .French International Titles.Parker can beat any other member of the American contingent when he’s right, and he long ago demonstrated his superiority over such foreign stars as Drobny, who he whipped for the title in France, and Bromwich, who fell before the Californian in the semi-finals at Forest Hills last summer. However, while we see Parker as the men's champion, we don’t think - he can rise to the heights that the great American champions — .Tilden, Vines, Budge, and Kramer — did before him.In the women’s division it is almost a foregone conclusion - that an American will emerge victorious, and it could be almost any of the Yankee girls in the tournament, although the two fav- ‘ eurites should be Mrs.Dupont and Louise Brough, with Doris Hart * and Mrs.Todd ranked close behind. The two doubles titles will go ‘ to the best combinations the Americans can muster in the respec- ! tive matches, and the mixed doubles winners should have at least ; one American member.M Jack Bromwich and Louise Brough, the ' delending champions, team together again this year, they should ; carry through to win.Personal Colour Missing While the competition will be as furious, and probably as ex- ; citing as in the past, nevertheless, much of the personal colour will be missing.Parker, who is the outstanding player in the tournament, has about 2s much colour as a plate of cold beans. There will be no repetition of such incidents as Budge's careless wave to Queen Mary, who left the crowd thunderstruck, when she waved back. There will be no crowd-pleaser such as Kramer, whose “big game” _ thrilled the conservative English public, as the tall American simply simply overpowered his opponents, The stress at Wimbledon this year, will mot be on personal colour so much as in the past, but the competition should be sharper this year than ever before, Is Feller Through? With Bebby Feller ranked seventh in percentage among the pitchers of the Cleveland Indians, and charged with exactly half of their first fourteen losses, the old question as to how good Feller is has been revived again. You remember the last time they asked that question.Feller promptly went out and threw a no-hitter at the slugging New York Yankees, and went on to win 26 ball games for a weak Cleveland Club, That was in 1946.Last year, Rapid Robert “slumped to 20 wins, and when he started off poorly this season the critics jumped down his neck again, How many other pitchers in the majors would like to slump to 20 wins for a season?Bobby Feller is not through. He's simply run into a string of bad luck, that can’t last forever.Take a look at young Art Houtte- man of the Detroit Tigers. He's a far better pitcher tham his eight ler pitched against the Yankees in New York last Sunday is an Jer pitched against the Yankees in Now York last Sunday is -an example. In losing his seventh game, Feller gave up 6 hits in 6 innings, and was trailing 2-1 when he left the premises. He was mot knocked out of the box; he was lifted sor a pinch hitter in the seventh inning, as the Indians strove for runs.As it turned out, the Tribe lost 5-3, so it is merely conjecture as to whether Feller «would have won, had he pitched the route. The Yankees actually won the game with a three-run, eight-inning rally off Feller’s successor, Gene Bearden. No, Bobby Feller is not through!
