Will Move To St.Henri The William Lunn Arts & Crafts School, situated in Griffintown, will close this year and in future English speaking students from Westmount, N.D.G.and other west end areas will be trained at the new St.Henri Arts & Crafts School situated at.the corner of Notre Dame and St.Remi streets. The new school, which incorporates all up-to-the-minute improvements, is rapidly nearing completion, Courses will be conducted in both English and French and will include electricity, machine shop practice, carpentry, drafting, pattern making, sheet metal work and the forge. The William Lunn School was opened in 1941 as a war emergency training school, under an arrange-y ment between the federal and provincial governments.Army personnel were given courses in surveying, mechanical drafting, machine shop practice, electricity, carpentry, sheet metal work and internal combustion engines, Civilians, both men and women, were taught machine shop practice and sheet metal work in order to enter the war industries. After the war veterans received a two-year trades course under the re-habili- tation plan.Over 8,000 students were trained in the eight year period.\\ The English section of the Trade Course (two year) was transferred from the Montreal Technical School to the William Lunn School in 1943 leaving that institution to concentrate on the Technical Course (four years).fuel outlook one year ago compared with that of today is entirely different for the City of Westmount householders.Local dealers report that there is no shortage of the commodity, but do admit that the prices are about the same. One year ago The Examiner survey showed that there was likely to be a coal shortage in the eary months of the winter, and a further survey in January saw dealers maintain that there was enough coal “on hand”.While coal prices are about the same as reported in January, the dealers admit that the price goes up duting the winter months, One merchant said that WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1949 = PRICE: THREE CENTS Rotary History Related To Westmount Members The evolution of the first Rotary Club and the changes made since that time composed the theme of John Smith's talk to the Rotary, Club of Westmount on Wednesday, after their regular weekly luncheon in Victoria Hall.Mr.Smith is the immediate past district governor of Rotary District 155 which takes in 14 clubs in Ontario and 61 in Michigan.Since the first club was formed in Chicago in 1905, there have been many changes in the Rotary set-up, the speaker told his audience.Originally, the club members meant to be of service to one another, but in 1906 they put community service into practice and this then became the first aim of Rotary, x to which the 6800 cluhs in the | world today adhere, he said. These clubs are situated in 80 countries, which is more countries than are represented in the United Nations, Mr.Smith claimed. The speaker then stated that one of the greatest forms of Rotary enjoyment is to get out of town and visit other clubs.Reverting to the historical side of his speech, Mr.Smith said that five-years aftffr the first club was formed, 1910, there were 16 active units, including one outside of United States, and that was in Winnipeg.Rotary entered Great Britain and Ireland in 1911, he recalled, and service became the cardinal interest rather than personal gain.In 1915, Rotary almost hit bankruptcy but at ihe suggestion of the president, each member donated one dollar to the cause and Rotary has been on solid ground ever since, he said.Nineteen hundred and eighteen saw Rotary in South America and in 1920, Europe took up the cause.Mr.Smith dwelt for some time on the British infiuence on Rotary International saying that the word “International” was added to the title after the King of England said in 1922, “Now.Rotary is really international” Another example of British influence is the fact that a Canadian started the first club in Australia. The speaker concluded by saying that each Rotary member has the job of giving good example tp everyone including superiors, inferiors, clients and customrs.Miss Francine Vanier Gets Important Work Miss Francine Vanier, niece of Major-General .Georges Vanier, Canadian Ambassador to France, and a graduate of the Robichaud Commercial Academy, Westmount, Quebec, was chosen as bilingual stenographer at the United Nations Conferences at Lake Success.Miss Vanier writes Gregg at 130 words per minute in both French and English.their present rate was $22 for American and $24 for Welsh Anthracite, but that this may take a jump in the first week - of September. All dealers say that householders should buy their coal in the early months of the summer when the prices are at their lowest. There are several reasons why coal hag jumped in price since 1947 then selling for approximately $17 a ton.An executive of the largest American importers pointed out that coal has not jumped in price any more than food or clothing over the past ten years. He pointed out that the unions which control the miners are demanding high + - Miss K.Jenkins Urges Cataloguing Of Canadian Books Miss Kathleen Jenkins, Libra rian at the Westmount Public Library and President of the Canadian Library Association, recently told the Royal Commission on Arts and Science Development that the first thing the Association ‘would like to see done is the cataloguing of all available maa terial Canada National Library. She said the cataloguing should start in Ottawa and then spread out to Canada’s larger centres, Second step in the Association's plan would be to have a branch set up in Montreal to cover all Frencu volumes in Quebec. This branch in Montreal would cover such important collections as the 800,000 volumes of Laval University and the collections of other French-speaking university institutions.Abbott Announces 4th Bond Series A Fourth Series of Canada Savings Bonds will go on sale across Canada in October. This was announced at Ottawa by the Hon.Douglas Abbott, Migister of Finance, Member of Parliament for St.Antoine-Westmount, who, at the same time, gave notice that Canada Savings Bonds, Series Three, will be withdrawn from sale August 31.The Minister said that the de-: cision to issue a Fourth Series of Canada Savings Bonds was prompted by the enthusiastic response that had attended the in in a previous three offerings.Fuel Outlook Is Good wages at the present time, and said the cost of operating the mining industry has also skyrocketed since the war years.Another reason for the increase in coal purchases is the result of the 21 per cent freight rate increase by Canadian Railroads. This new rate has forced the Canadian goal price level to rise considerably because most of the produce is shipped by rail. The executive of the importing company also agreed with local dealers when they maintained that they were better off in the pre-war days.“It is true” he said, “that the retail dealer was able to show a greater profit for his produce in the pre-war sales than he is at the present time.” or &ls0 gives Lie long-term history of the ‘planned economy” countries shows that the only answer to the problem of inflation is increased production of goods,” caid Mr.Rutledge.“In the past ten years Canada's national income has climbed from five to fifteen billion dollars a year,” Mr.Rutledge pointed out.“The average hourly wage in 1939 was 44.3 cents per hour and this year it is more than double that. The government's cost-of- living index shows that we have to spend $1.60 today for what we bought in 1939 for a dollar. From that it is obvious that there is inflation in Canada, but price controls and subsidies that make taxes pay part of the cost of consumer goods would be merely an attempt to hide this inflation, not to cure it.“Despite the platform promises of office seekers,” said Mr.Rutledge, “the way to stabilize and lower prices is not to try to tie them down with the red tape of government controls but to produce enough goods THE EXAMINER, poliomyelitis in comparison with other diseases.Last year whooping cough alone caused almost as many deaths as diphtheria, polio and scarlet fever combined. In a five-year period, whooping cough caused nearly five times as many deaths as polio, and diphtheria three and a half times as many.At this time of the year, parents are nervous about poliomyelitis, or infantile paralysis.Such feeling is understandable, particularly during a year such as this, when there has been a sharp increase in the number of cases. However, since our knowledge of the ‘why’ of polio epidemics is extremely scanty, there is no more reason for forecasting an epidemic than for prophesying that there will be none, While there are specific preventives for whooping cough and diphtheria, there is, St.Paul stood on Mar's Hill in Athens and presented Christianity in the form of an argument concerning Jesus and the Resurrection his philosophic audience laughed at him, and he ‘left Athens a shaken man and made his way to the cosmopolitan, commercial City of Corinth, He told the Corinthians later that he came to them in fear and trembling, determined to know nothing among them save Jesus and Him crucified. From that day on it was not a mattter of argument but of proclamation. It was words of wordly wisdom but the confession of a crucified Saviour. His proclamation was that “He died for our sins.” There are few things that Christianity has to say that are more offensive than that our sins of today crucified Christ. There are few things more mysterious than that ‘He bore our sins in His own Body on the tree.” It is offensive because we do not like to admit the reality of sin at all.We like to flatter ourselves that any wrong doings are only the result of our animal inheritance, and that we are not really respons sible fr them at all.Surely they are not the sort of thing the Son of God would have to suffer for.We find the whole matter a mystery that makes us a little bit impatient. Was not St.Paul, we ask, stretching his argument a bit too far when he said to the Galatians, ‘before your eyes Jesus Christ was evidently set forth, crucified among you.” ?Yet there is the claim, that “He was crucified for us under Pon- tius Pilate.” It is those two little words “for us” that make all the difference between, we might say, the death of Socrates and the death of Christ. With all its heroism we should never say that the death of Socrates saves us from our sins, while that is just the claim that we make regarding the death of Christ. If we sense the thing at all we do not ask in quite the same tone as before “What difference does it make to me?” If we have grasped the meaning of it at all our first reaction must be: “Can it really be true that my sins are of such consequence, as to bring the Son of God to His death?” And perhaps our second reaction will be: “Can God really be of such a nature as to send His own Son into the world just to save me ?”’ And the third would be: ‘Can even God do such a thing for me?” The third question is answered first in the lives of the ccuntless thousands who have known themselves to be set free from their sins.Perhaps the most striking picture of it is in Bunyan's “Pilgrim’s Progress,” when Christian's burden rolls from his shoulders at the foot of the Cross. The second question is really the crux of the whole matter: God is of that kind. And our response must be of the same kind: “We love Him because He first loved us.” The first question, I think, is hardest for us to answer: “Can my sin really matter so much?” The whole temper of our age is against it.But ask those who have come near to the mind of God and they will testify that sin is the most terrible thing in the world, and that their sins are the the Death of Christ” should be a re.examination of our own soul, with a steadfast determination to lead a new life, because our sins have already done such an infinite harm to the Son of God, but, nevertheless, have already been atoned for in His love.First Church of I put the same question to another good friend. He knows politics and literature, war and peace. He senses terribly the suffering of mankind, seldom analyses the causes, works hard to alleviate human misery.“Family Allowances ”,said he, “are an excellent thing — they put money in circulation”.' The fact is we spend close to $300 million a year on family allowances. This is a transfer from all the people of Canada to some sf the people of Canada. It does not increase the national income — it may reduce it.Those who receive it spend More, those who pay it spend less or invest less. Will greater wisdom be shown in the expenditure if those who receive the allowances or would we find greater wisdom in those who pay the taxes?Life is more complex than: many people think. There must be capital investment if we are to have progress. The greater the capital investment per unit of labor employed the greater will be the total production and the greater the wealth of the nation. In a sound economy human needs will receive attention — mass charity is often stupid waste.~ If we are determined to spend Pa of expenditure would, over a period of years, produce greater benefits. The issue should have been discussed.Consideration should have been given to alternative methods of spending this sum.% *% % Progress, under modern conditions, consists of the exploitation of our natural resources. We reap a harvest but what about the harvests of the future. The land is becoming eroded, in some areas wind damage is high.Suppose we consider one or two possible alternatives. There are substantial areas in the Province of Ontario and Quebec which are no longer suitable for farming; they should be used as forest areas. There is more in the next 50 years if it was more in the next 50 yars if it was planted in trees instead of in crops. There are roads which should be sheltered from drifting snows by forest wind-breaks.Tree planting in Western Canada has been helpful as far as it has gone but more work could be done.We need a broad policy of soil conservation, Failure to develop a program of this kind will only add to the difficulties of the future. All effort should be based on the conservation and development of our basic assets. There are other problems. There is now under consideration an irrigation and power project in Saskatchewan, .If it is developed: ing made for a national highway.A highway through the mountains would add greatly to tourist traffic. There is no end to projects which could be developed with the money now spent in family allowances — they would insure the future stability of the nation. The safeguarding of our resources is a creative responsibility.Family Allowances deal only with the redistribution of existing wealth.Conservation will determine our ultimate standard of living.Bright pictures are drawn of the improvement in health as the result of family allowances.Their health improved during the war.It did not affect babies alone, it affected the whole standard of living. Our national effort was put forward to increase production, not merely to alter the distribution of existing income. What of the future At present, our burdens sit lightly on us but our debt is high.We have accumu- | lated a number of fixed charges which may well prove a heavy burden in time of depression.Hard times will come again — the essential need is increased capacity to produce, a higher national income in terms of goods and services.A new model ‘British motor car contains a gadget for brewing tea while the driver tools his way through London traffic. What—no oven for turning out crumpets?travelling to the Quebec Provincial Exhibition to be held at Quebec City Sept.2 to Sept.11, inclusive, were announced here today by J.A.Brass, chairman of the Canadian Passenger Association.Reduced fare tickets may be- purchased from all stations in the Province of Quebec.Round trip tickets will be sold for the normal one-way fare plus one-half for both first class and coach class travel.Tickets will be honored going from Thursday, Sept.1, to Sunday, Sept.11, inclusive. On the return trip, tickets will be accepted leaving Quebec up to midnight of Monday.Knute Rockne was born in Norway.Country Property for Sale DOMAINE PONTBRIAND RAWDON, QUE.Exclusive year-round resort under development in the Lauren- tians, surrounding 5-mile-lons Lake Pontbriand.Adjacent to Rawdon village.Modern subdivision; 80° boulevard crosses pron- erty.Plan includes hotels, church, schools, riding academy, ski slopes on Oak Mountain, golf course, aviation field.Houses of various architectural design or building lots available, We can also design and build to your convenience, Electricity.Wells or aqueduct.46 miles from Montreal on route 18.For information see Henri Pontbriand, 288 Lakeshore Road, Rawdon Heights. - Sor: a ad Tee aH ha _- Lo LE PY TL eA crt, vue a - .mene my aT TIES ies wn ’ PAGE EIGHT LL a A A LT Hellywoods …… QMAZING new cream Type make-up! they are provided with comfortable mattresses, sleeping bags and bedding; with a small gasoline stove, cooking utensils and dishes; with space for clothing, and food, and the quantities of literature which is provided by the head office In Winnipeg.Van Missionary's Work For five months each year, from May to October, the vans are on the road: the main object of the van workers is to reach the children of families who are so remote - from a clergyman that there is no religious teaching, and to interest such children in becoming members of the Sunday School by Post. The Sunday School by Post is operated for each diocese by one of the clergymen. He sends out Sun- daw School papers, and the questions the children are to answer; and he, or some other qualified Person, corrects the returned papers. At the end of the year the youngsters who have followed the course receive credit, just as they would in any regular correspondence school. In this way young folk in remote districts are kept within the church, and made to feel a sense of belonging — something that is very essential if these pioneers are to grow up with normal, healthy attitudes.Church Vacation Schools Another important feature of the van missionaries’ work is the vacation school.Vacation schools are becoming more and more an integal part of church work, but the everworked clergy are unable to undertake these schools in all parts of their parishes, and are very grateful when the job is taken over by the van teachers. The Reverend R.Stanley of Ka- Puskasing asked us to call in at the Japanese settlement on our way to Geraldton, to arrange for a vacation school later during the summer, We had arrived the day before school closing — in Ontario the schools keep open until June 29 at four o'clock — in the Junior grades, and the teachers asked us If we would be willing to stay and attend the closing exercises, which We were very happy to do.Japanese Pupils Miss Margaret Foster, who has been working among the Japanese In Canada for twenty years and loves them dearly, not only takes the religious services for the com- Münity but also teaches kinder- Barten and grades one and two.At ten o'clock on June 28 the mothers 8nd babies began to arrive; chairs and desks had been placed at the back of the classroom, and here the visitors sat — a group of exquisitely neat women and immaculate babies.Several of the womerf were positively beautiful and all of the babies were attractive._ In the short time we were in the settlement we discoverd that though the Japanese look ver y solemn they will burst into delighted giggles, irristible laughter; at the slightest provocation; and that they make a splendid audience for they respond so eagerly to both performer and performance.Miss Foster had trained the children well, and the# recited, read, did arithmetic and sang, readily and pleasingly. The final and most spectacular item on the programme was a maypole dance which was executed solemnly and precisely, in the schoolyard. All these Japanese come from British Columbia. When Miss Foster introduced my daughter and me, she told the ladies we were from Notre Dame de Grace and that my husband Was a clergyman, and chaplain of the Montreal jail and that I sometimes lectured on his work; before I knew it a meeting wag arranged for the afternoon — a parent's and teacher's meeting — and these Japanese women who have surely undergone many tribulations during the past several years met to listen to a talk on prison work and to discuss what could and should be done to p revent crimes, and to aid those who have paid the penalty and are thrust again upon an unfriendly world. The next day Miss Ide’s classes had their closing exercises: these New Bendix Economat To Be Made in Canada Employing a revelutionary new principle, the New Bendix Econo- mat will shortly make its appearance on the Canadian market.Mr.W.V., Howarth, Assistant General Manager, Bendix Home Appliance Canada, Ltd., who demonstrated the machine today at a Convention of Canadian Distributors, said the purpose of the new model is to broaden the line and to meet the demands of the middle income group.Compared to the original “Trumble-Action” Bendix principle, the ECONOMAT uses an agitator action and aflexible “Metexaloy” tub.The Metexaloy tub is of the same composition as that used by the Air Forces during the war as an auxiliary gas tank.In the ECONOMAT the tub, by a vacuum principle, squeezes the clothes after washing and rising so that they are ready for hanging on the line, Mr.H, K.Lyons, Vice President of the Canadian Company and Treasurer of Bendix Home Appliances Inc, South Bend, Inc.said the new model is presently in production at the Bendix plant in Amherst, N.S, This plant employes approximately 175 people and is the only source for Bendix world export, Mr.Lyons said that the ECONOMAT will be exported in quantities in the very near future, However, it will in no way replace the world famous “Trumble Action” washer which Bendix pioneered back in 1937.The ECONO- MAT will, of course, enable wider distribution in the medium price ranges, The Convention was held at the Hotel de LaSalle for two days, during which time, distributors and dealers from all of Canada saw demonstrations of the new model.THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1949 Milkshake Is Healthful During August / The more milk and other dairy foods your family uses, the better will be their health and stamina.Milkshakes, cool right now during the August not weather, are one way to bring up your family’s dairy food consumption.Use fluid milk, evaporated milk or dry milk solids (reconstituted). They all furnish nutritional constituents needed in the average diet. For mixing a good milk shake, use either a glass fruit jar with a close-fitting cover, a milk bottle (with a cap), a shaker or an electric mixer — you have a wide choice of equipment!
