frightening type are seen above about to work their evils on little Barbara McFadden (extreme left) who is fied to a totem pole. The action took place in Westmount Park last Friday night as children of all local playgrounds staged their biggest pageant of the year under the direction of recreation supervisor Herb Linder.Westm’t Park Invaded By Indians’ During Pageant With blood curdling Sheila Wakeley, Staynor Playground Supervisor made) teepees, totem poles.etc., were all products of the playgrounds. At the Ravine Pond, the Indian Village was constructed and with the small fires and footlights throwing weird shadows, the atmosphere was complete.Over a hundred boys and girls took part in the show. After the screaming, milling throug of braves, with their war paint glistening, had took the fair white maiden away and warned the Indians to forever after live a peaceful life. After the show the children were given refreshments in the Parks Department Greenhouse, where cakes and used to queuing for things that they seldom give a thought to the dreary process of standing in a long line to purchase the ordinary commodities of life. But when Jon Cleary, an Australian novelist who has been in Britain for three years, started queuing it was another matter. He and his wife decided that it would be a good thing for father to stay home from the office to look after small daughter Catherine whilst mother went into the hospital to produce the second member of the family.Father gaily thought that it would be a nice change and a bit of a holiday but after a fortnight of it was prepared to put it in writing that, in sober truth, a woman's work is never done.“I knew there was food rationing,” he said in a BBC talk on his chastening experience, “and I never asked questions about , the things we never had.I also never asked questions about the things we did have.I know now that I should have.” He began his day with household chores, which he disarmingly confessed meant making the bed and re-arranging the dust on the more prominent articles of furniture. Then he dumped Catherine in her pram and went articles and little knowing, poor uneducated creature, that shopping is not a matter of what you want but of what the shop- Keepers say you can or cannot have. The first reverse was in finding that his shopping list and his basket did not tally at all.The second was in finding that he had to queue for what seemed hours before he could get into the shop to see what he could not have. Before Mrs.Cleary went into the hospital she presented her hus- hand with a manual “The Young Bride in the Kithen.” For a tyro like myself,” he said, ‘who was neither a bride nor a domestic science it was as Finnegan's Her father did not do so well and was a much wiser man at .the end of his enforced period of housekeeping.Mrs, Cleary must be surprised and delighted at the | “change in him for he was vowed: ! that.now he knows what house- i hold difficulties are, he will never’ | again complain at what she puts in front of him and never again bring anyone home to a meal without asking her first.NO fundamental importance. On new woodwork it should penetrate into the surface and provide a tooth for subsequent coats. It is particularly important on exterior work where it should protect the surface from penetration by moisture. The recognized practice is for the priming coat to be of a rather thin and oily consistency. In all cases the greatest importance attaches to the efficient application of the priming coat: it should be applied to woodwork before assembly or repair work is done, well brushed in to secure maximum protection and penetra- joints, end grains, and other tion, and especially assurance regarding ourselves. We are living our lives here in the knowledge that the time must come when this earthly scheme of things must end, either by the Return of our Lord or by our departure to be with Him.Of course we dread it as we dread any complete change. We do not like changing from the security of home to the risks of the world. We shrink from the chances involved in changing jobs. And so with all other changes. But in all of them we have the experience of others to guide us.They have done the same things and they can tell us that all is well. But in the case of death no one comes
