Courteous Delivery WE.1151 THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, The Pillar By GEORGE COCHRANE MUM'S THE WORD The sad plight of the citizens of New York has moved the adults of this suburb city to profound pity, the ‘younger fry to something strongly resembling envy. For, as all well-read burghers of this prosperous community are doubtlessly aware, today is water-no, sir, day in North America’s largest city.To the Latin- ally inclined, it is non aqua pura day. This unfortunate state of affairs was the subject of conversation in The Examiner’s editorial sanctum the other p.m.Just to illustrate the razor-sharp properties of ye local weekly staff's wits, permit me to quote the wise sayings of one, Miss Dawn McLachlan, female in charge of women's news; and two Meldrum James, male responsible for, among other things, seeing that the characters who put in appearances in West- mount's Recorder's Court get their full share of publicity.Miss McL, in response to an interrogation of some sort, answered, “Things in New York are very Arid.” To which our Mr.James added, “I heard that down there Mum's the word.” This, of course, is an all too light-hearted treatment of something which might bring untold misery into the lives of New York's millions.Unshaven, unwashed, what chance will a romantically inclined young man have today in New York—unless he remembers that Mum's the word. But such thoughts are melancholy and as this is the Christmas season, let us put such things aside.Forward, Liberals Ye local capitalists will gather in the Reform Club come Monday evening for the annual Christmas banquet of the Westmount Young Liberals Association.John Foss, always a hard-working gentleman, is looking after the arrangements and is personally guaranteeing the presence of such big names in the realm of Liberalism as Senator Hugessen and George Marler.John Joseph Junior Pepper, the former drummer boy now studying law at McGill, will be in the chair. This Liberal group has come a long way since William Atwood Macdonald first organized it way back in 1945.In those days the meetings were held in WAM°s sitting room and there were only a few staunch supporters of Mr.King on hand to bend an appreciative ear to W.A's remarks. But things k:pt growing, kept getting better, until now the association is firmly established.Westmount Art Association Plans For New Year The Westmount Art Association, producing very fine work lately, is planning a much wider spread of activities in the New Year, it is announced.Movies on Canadian and contemporary painters are on the agenda for the beginning of next year.Members who are not interested in portrait painting and figure drawing will be given an opportunity to work from still life with constructive criticism. The next meeting of this group will be on Tuesday, January 10, in the Art Room of the Junior High School. These facilities have done much to accommodate the group with good equipment and A proper lighting.FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1919 Scouts & (Cubs By REC.GROOME At Westmount Park Pack, Peter Corry, Michael Redden sang Tom Netterfield have been awarded their first stars and also his fellow teachers, for the brief case.He hoped that his remaining years at St.Leo's would be as pleasant and as fruitful as they had been in the past.He spoke of his training period at Ottawa Normal School, and how he turned down more lucrative positions to follow the teaching profession. He thanked the School Commissioners for - the manner in which they had always treated their teachers and expressed the thought, that nowhere else on the Island could be found a group of teachers who were more attached to their school than at St.Leo's.After so many years, he came to the conclusion that teaching was the finest profession of all, and in reality was a vocation.Brother Sylvain, Director, spoke of the harmony that existed between the two elements which make up St.Leo's and of the brotherly love that was demonstrated at all times between the religious and lay members of the staff. He remarked that the two gentlemen had done much, in their 25 years at St.Leo's, to enhance the fine reputation of the school. He thanked the School Commissioners for the excellent manner in which they carried out their duties to both the public and to the school.A.E.Wescott, inspector, stated that he was always pleased to visit St.Leo's.It’s home-like atmosphere was greatly appreciated by himself and others.Just as the clergy must recall to the minds of the faithful, the same things over and over, so must the teacher repeat the same lessons year after year. How happy he was, as representative of the Department of Public Instruction, to pay homage to the two jubilar- ians and to voice, publicly, the many kind and grateful remarks which were made to him personally, regarding the benefits which the old pupils of the school were the recipients. He stressed the marvellous harmony which existed in this school, which was unique in the Province of Quebec.Dr.J.T.Togers, School Commissioner, congratulated Mr.Ke- hoe and Mr.Durocher on this, their Silver Jubilee at St.Leo's.He stressed the amount of good which had been accomplished by these two and by all the other members of the teaching personnel.Jean Casgrain, School Commissioner, who spoke in French at the request of the gathering, remarked on the beautiful sentiments of thanks which had been expressed by the two honored guests; One half package of cake mix will make six cup cakes and one small loaf. The loaf is eaten fresh as it comes from the oven with, or without, chocolate sauce. The cup cakes are frosted and served the next evening with fruit or ice cream. When a larger cake is needed a whole package of white cake mix is used and one cup of shelled walnuts added. This is baked in a loaf.We really “take the cake” with this combination.Alternate spoonfuls of prepared light and dark cake mix batter, placed in a pan and baked, make a marble cake that is popular with all who try it.Peach up-side-down cake is made by baking the prepared gold cake mix on top of sliced and sugared peaches.A custard filling is used between two layers of light cake mix and we have Washington cream pie.But the greatest feat was that beautiful large wedding cake. All who ate it commented on its fine texture, its delicious flavor, and moist delicacy.Afterward it was learned that packages of white cake mix had been used with no of our neighbor, who made a muss, no fuss, but with the assurance that the result would be a perfect cake.FARRELL'S CATERING SERVICE WEDDINGS, BANQUETS RECEPTIONS AND PARTIES YOrk 0254 Residence - TR.2342 a That exclusive CREATED FOR That handwork elegance in daylime and cocktail dresses .evening and dinner gowns .and millinery YOU ALONE! ‘Principle source of the household dust that causes asthmatic symptons is bedding dust, that results from the disintegration of cotton linters. The actual allergon is believed to be a protein substance in’ the minute air-borne particles that result from such disintegration. Moreover, as feathers in pillows are cleaned or renewed, they become brittle; particles break off, get into the air and are breathed, thus creating respiratory distress in those who§ are allergic to them.” Furnace manufacturers point out that it is now possible to achieve dust control within the home with the modern type warm air winter air conditioning system. This system is designed around the principle of positive controlled circulation of indoor air.By means of return-air intakes and compact return-air ducts, the cooler air in all rooms is drawn to the furnace unit by a blower where it passes through air filters before being heated and humidifed and directed back to the rooms.Modern heating system filters are capable of cleansing indoor air of a large percentage of all air-borne dust, dirt, lint and pollens.Owners of warm air winter air conditioning systems are enthusiastic over appreciate, and you should not, colored drapes that clash violentiy with brick or paint. It is a good idea, too, to have some general plan of curtain-hanging.Do not mix plain and tieback drapes higgledy- piggledy fashion across the front of your house. For Spacious Look You will have a greater feeling of space if you use the same type of curtain material in a living room and the adjoining dining room or alcove or any room which opens into another.Small rooms will look larger if drapes are allowed to fall straight.Save your tiebacks and festoons for rooms with ample wall space where their softening influence will be felt.Do not be afraid to use simple cottons with your painted furniture. They are by far the most appropriate choice.Plain factory cotton, bound or bordered in brightly colored bias tape, gingham, or print, may be a solution in a youngstèr's room, or even in the kitchen.Chintz, glazed or unglazed, is always a happy solution to the drape problem. If you are bathing beauty pictures, of course, which reminds us that on good authority we hear that Coronet is shortly to feature some of the local lovelies in swim suits.Peter Miller, who has had much experience posing for character studies and modelling male fashions, says “You don't have to be good looking, but you must be photogenic.” Not long ago Peter was chosen for the runway by the Custom Tailors of Amer- fca and Canada, and the suits he wore represented the work of 13 different custom tailors in Montreal, each one an expert in some special feature of tailoring such as lapels, collars, etc.You can world traveller leaning over the.THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1049 pick him out in advertisements inserted by such firms as the Bell Telephone, C.P.R.Steamships, Columbia records, Coca- Cola, etc.Peter has also trained many young men for modelling jobs, including the twenty-eight huskies who lately modelled Migo shirts, As he reminds.us, people of all sizes and ages are needed for group pictures depicting, let us say, new equipment in a parlor car or a plane cabin.Lolling on the comfortable chairs with bright expressions on their faces are not only glamor boys and girls, but children and older people both fat and thin, with plentiful locks and without.Sometimes a shot calls for a type not easily obtainable. One studio recently called Betty Speirs asking her to find on a few hours notice a woman between the ages of 35 and 45, with grey hair, who along with other qualifications, would typify mature charm and poise.None of Betty's model class of cuties filled the bill, but she remembered a receptionist she had seen in a doctor's office, and this lady, after a little coaching, played the role successfully. So a model, it seems, like gold, is where you find her.“There's plenty of scope for a girl or man who is photogenic, poised and can act naturally,” says Betty.“Righ here in Montreal films are being made, on various articles of commerce, which are shown when manufacturers meet at their conventions It is only comparatively recently that amateurs have taken to modelling. But it seems to be a popular and profitable way to spend leisure hours if you have the face, the figure and a flair for it.+ * ¥ MINUTE MAGIC .If one can believe the Hopi Indians (or the newspapers, for that matter) it looks as if New York is doomed. At any rate, that city is presented with a nasty alternative — drought or a dozen diamond-back rattlesnakes. The logical answer to this is to sneer “A few snakes more or less in New York will never be noticed.” But this is not a laughing-or-sneering-matter.Fifteen rainmakers of the Hopi ‘Tribe in Arizona hold little hope for their white brothers in the “tall village,” who have incurred the wrath of the rain gods.Perhaps it all started with the men who hit on the idea of artificial rain. One can't fool with Nature and get away with it.Nature on the rampage is nothing to laugh at.She could make New York look pretty silly.Although rainmakers have no intention of revealing the whole of the secret art of pleasing the water gods, nevertheless they've offered to send along their prize rattlesnakes that play a leading part in the ritual. They are also willing to toss in a dozen assorted rain chants.(Sequels, no doubt, to “That Lucky Old Sun.”) Of course, it may be all a plot on the part of the Indian to get back his country. And you can hardly blame him for trying.BUSY THESPIAN One of Hollywood's busiest ac- tars is Macdonald based on the spectacular and dramatic career of Monty Stratton, who came from the sandlots of Texas to win fame as a pitching star with the Chicago White Sox.While backgrounded with the thrills of big league ball park Scenes, the sports angle of the narrative is subservient to the true-to-life story of Monty Strat- ton who, after two seasons that put him on the verge of all-time greatness, suffered a hunting accident that caused the amputation of his right leg.How he came back, eight years later, to resume a pitching career in the game he loved and to be named the “Most Courageous Athlete
