a day in which the whole family would join together in thanksgiving for the birth of the Saviour of Men, (2) Let us make it a day to exalt the home reminding ourselves, our nation, and our world, that the most valuable of all is the baby in the manger or the crib.(3) Let all the expressions of good-will, unselfishness and love which Christmas ought to inspire, be a basis of fulfilment of the Christmas spirit in everyday living.“Peace on earth to men of good-will is real, practical and possible, if we begin with a Christian Christmas.Rev.Thomas E., McLennan HEAVEN'S REASON FOR JESUS (By Rev.A.Lloyd Smith, Dominion - Douglas Church) Many causes have claimed to represent the Spirit of Jesus but Heaven's reason for His Name was "He shall save His people from their sins”.Jesus is still doing that. From drink and drugs and lust.“He sets the prisoner free”.To men and women defeated and discouraged Fro SSIES ERS CRE IRR SRSA ARES OO SREB SIE 3 GECRGE C.MARLER, M.LA.Extends To All Electors of Westmount-St.Ceorge Best Wishes fer A MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR D.C K.C.M.P.Extends to All the Electors of St.Antoine-Westmount - Division his Sincerest Wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.Abbott, He comes with the assurance ot mercy, forgiveness and new hope.To other sorts of sin He comes with sharp rebuke — e.g.resentment and revenge which do so much to poison life and stir up trouble. He said we are to forgive until “seventy times seven” — and He set before us the example of His own forgiveness on the Cross.Christmas is a time for giving and forgiving.Prejudice is another popular sin which Jesus roundly condemned. He tried to save folk from a paralyzed and stiffened mind.He said that unless we become like enquiring, teachable children we shall not see the Kingdom of Heaven.Christmas is the children’s festival. It is a time for everyone to seek a.childlike spirit. Then there, is fear which, in Jesus' estimation, is one of the worst siks.Certainly it is one of the most disastrous. Many lives are wrecked by worry and fear.Nobody ever had greater cause for anxiety than Jesus. No one ever lived such a serene and sunny life. The secret was a complete trust in the love, ‘wisdom and power of God.Christmas is a time when we ought to remind ourselves that the Heavenly Father Who gave His only Son for us will “with Him also freely give us all things”.Worst of all sing is selfishness which crowds God off his rightful throne in our hearts and blights "generosity.Over and over Jesus emphasized that to save life is to lose it and that there is no real wealth except that which comes through giving.Christmas joy, which flows from benevolence, is the year's most powerful reminder that Jesus spoke the truth. He still can and does save men and women from their sins and greal joy continues in Heaven.- A Lioyd Smith THE ANGELS SANG ON CHRISTMAS MORN By Rev.Canon Gilbert Oliver St.Mathias Church _ The opportunity afforded by the kindness of the Editor of The Examiner to send a ‘‘Christmas Greeting” to the people of West- mount is greatly appreciated.The- message of Christmas remains the same; nothing can change it.Wars, pestilence, unrest — socially and industrially — may rage around us, but the message of this joyous season is just the same, and the angels sang it on the first Christmas morn, — “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace amongst men of goodwill” — a free translation, but expressive of the real meaning of the Angelic song.’ The appeal of this Season is so strong and enduring because it is so acceptable to all well-meaning people, Peace is the desire of most men, although comparatively few seem to be willing to pay the price of peace.Because peace is the soul's desire, it is a mistake to imagine that fulfilment will follow without effort.- We get nothing for nothing in this worid, — there is always a price to pay; and if there were no price, we should probably spurn the offered boon, and regard it as cheap and not worth bothering about.Let us make up our minds to strive (and mark the word strive) for peace in our national international and personal relations. It means, understanding the point of view of the other person, giving up all foolish racial prejudices, and a genuine desire to co-operate heartily in all that is for the good of mankind. It certainly does not mean that we have to acquiesce in evil things; nor does it mean dropping all our defences. An earnest desire for peace, and willingness to work, pray, and sacrifice for it is cleaf- ly indicated.Glory to God in the highest, — this is the pre-requisite for peace and good will, It is only as we give gloryr|l praise, and honour to God that we can be truly happy and enjoy real peace.May God bless you all this Holy Season — don't let us forget to pay our homage to the - Jd m the Churches Christ-chila in His.Housé; and let us not get so engrossed with the material side of Christmas that we have neither time nor room for the One whom at this time we should honour and adore.Warmest good wishes for a Happy Christmas, and prayers that God may bless and guide us all in the New Year.Gilbert Oliver CHRISTMAS THOUGHTS ~ (By Rev.A.T.Love St.Stephen’s Church The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. And it is meant to serve two purposes.First — A Reminder Of The Second Coming Of Christ, It is stated thus in the Creed, “From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.” As he came once to be the Saviour of the world, he will come again to be its Judge. The judgment of God is a constant process, but it will be only fully reavealed later. This gives a note of solemnity to Advent, and the Church presents it in her services both through .the eye and the ear.Hence an Advent Collect pleads — “That in the last day when he shall come again in his glorious majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal.” The other feature of Advent js, “Preparation For The Celebration Of Christ's First Coming, which is observed at Christmas. The nature of this celebration depends on its interpretation.Generally speaking there are two ways of viewing it.One is the expression of Holy Scripture, namely, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us".This is known as the Incarnation, and it means the Divine assumption of human nature in the person of Jesus Christ. In other words He was perfect God and perfect man.The other view is that while Jesus Christ is recognized as a prophet, and the world’s grandest character, he was not completely Divine. This difference of interpretation accounts for the various ways of (Continued on Page 9) THE PRESIDENT AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS of the WESTMOUNT WOMEN'S CLUB Inc.Wish to Extend the Compliments of the Season to Members and Friends. The Officers and Members of The Rotary Club of Westmount, a member club in Rotary International, wish to thank the people of Westmount for their continued support and extend best wishes to all good people in our city and throughout the world for A JOYOUS CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY & PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR RRR For Christmas and the New Year The members of the Business Association extend to the citizens of Westmount their best wishes for a Joyful Christmas and a New Year filled with Happiness and Prosperity.THE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION OF WESTMOUNT -< | A RE a" i Po OR ARS 810 hm an od ES D Pe the ce loc toi br Serving the City of Westmount, Garden Suburb of Canada's-Metropolis VOL.XX, No.51 WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 1949 PAGE THREE ’ ABBOTT PARRIES CHALLENGE i # ( / =Pletured with local members of the Westmount Young Liberal Association Club is the Hon.D.C.“Abbott, who said at an address Tuesday that Canada’s economic situation remains strong despite a “drop in the price of eggs.Others, from left to rig ht, are: Rolland Lefrancois, president of the Quebec "Young Liberal Federation; The speaker was addressing the Montreal Chapter of the Internal Auditors. He said the diminishing balance method to be employed under the new law was abandoned it in 1944.“dangerously outmoded”.Britain had = Prof.Byrd also pointed out that the Accountant, an English professional publication, had “scathingly denounced” the method and dedéribed it as the lazy accountant’s friend. He was frightened that the lead taken by Mr.Abbott would be followed by Canadian accountants who would not” only introduce the “unfortunate” method in income tax, but would also use it for general accounting purposes.Three Tiny Girls In Blue, False Alarm Fiends Three very small girls pulled a fire alarm last Sunday afternoon about 1 p.m.at the corner of Greene and St.Antoine.The box is located on the Montreal side of the street and the call was answered by the Montreal Fire Dept., who, needless to say, were very annoyed by the false alarm and useless trip.An observer informs us that the three mischevious little ladies had to hoist one of their number up to turn the handle, after which they fled. They sauntered demurely back to the scene of their crime when | the firemen arrived, looking very, very innocent. The fire captain asked them if they had seen anyone pull the alarm but they shook their little heads in reply. There has recently been quite a number of false alarm calls in this area on both the Westmount and Montreal sides of the street. For their own protection residents should report the offenders.Seasonal Colour At Homoeopathic Christmas festivities at the Homoeopathic Hospital will begin | tonight with the annual candlelight carol service. The student nurses file through the darkened corridors on each floor, carrying lighted candles and singing the best-loved Christmas carols. The singing will be directed by S.Mc- Keys.Sunday morning the Salvation Army will present a programme by the popular carollers. The corridors and ante-rooms of the hospital are decorated with 17 brightly - trimmed Christmas trees, and Nurse Mildred Bennett has painted many of the windows various seasonal designs, Commenting further, mer, states that Mr.Abbott appeared to be in excellent spirits. He was -extremely polite to the delegation, but seldom allowed a speaker to finish his remarks without breaking in with some statistics to counter the arguments advanced.Mr.Abbott did stir up some resentment when he made the statement that with the consump- and ~ elséwhere he believed the tenants eould afford to pay higher rents. If they can buy beer in increasing quantities they can "pay more in the way of rents, he is reported as having said.Mr.Abbott also made the statement that the average percentage of wages or salary going towards paying rent is only 12 per cent. The delegation left without any assurance from the Finance Minister that he would take any action on their request to have the rent hike order rescinded. In the meantime Vic Obeck and Lew Hayman may be able to evolve some new plays by watching the ball passing game being played between Ottawa and Quebec, in which the tenants are taking a bad beating.CHRISTMAS EVE CAROLS On Christmas Eve, in St.Stephen's Church, Dorchester Stand Atwater Ave., the Choir under the direction of Eustace Tait, A.C.C.O., will give a short programme of carols by candlelight, prior to the Choral Celebration. The programme will commence at 11.10 p.m.Christmas Happy New Year.zens.preserve these benefits, way of living.Tenant Dele Delegates Get No Promises In Rent Interview The Hon.D.C.Abbott, Finance Minister, and member for St, Antoine Westmount in the Federal House at Ottawa, turned aside a challenge that he resign his seat as he had “lost the confidence of the majority of his electors by his attitude on the rental increase.” The demand for his resignation was made to the Minister by a delegation representing the St.Andrew's Ward Tenants which called on him at his offices in the old post office building on Friday.Unlike the knights of old Mr.Abbott did not accept the challenge when the gauntlet was thrown at him.The demand was bi- passed without comment on the part of-the Minister.our infor-x tion of beer going up in Quebec | Two Men Injured In Boulevard Auto Accident Two men were rushed to the Homoeopathic Hospital, Saturday night, when .the automobile in which they were riding, jumped the sidewalk and crashed into a tramway pole at Clarke avenue and Westmount boulevard, The driver of the vehicle Marcel Rochon, 32, of 6586A Des Erables street, Montreal, suffered a broken nose and face lacerations, while his companion, George Maxwell, 34, of 1280 Laird boulevard, Town of Mount Royal, was treated for a possible fracture o.the lower left leg; Humphrey was astounded to find the beautiful frail violet still there! shooting up and up with the bloom | intact. The whole thing is quite: incredible, he thinks.Maybe Col.Humphrey should turn the violet over to the Superintendent of Parks.Who knows but that we may be able to get a violet which will vie with the snow flakes of our Canadian winter.Dr.N.Gouroff SURGEON-DENTIST 4147 SHERBROOKE ST.W.(CORNER GREENE AVE) TELEPHONE: Fi.0685 though no .regular dance will be deld tonight.During the coming week in the place of organized groups the pro- Zram room will be open from Tues- ay evening to Friday. The Y.M.C.A.will be closed on Monday, Dec.26.A Square Dance | Club has been organized to hold regular meetings on Tuesday evenings at 8 p.m., in the Westmount Y.M.C.A.Arising from the interest shown in this activity on Friday evenings during the past two months, the Club has been organized to promote square and folk dancing. All who are interested are invited to attend the first meeting of the club on January 9th.The provisional ‘executive 's comprised of * Chairman, Jayson ‘Conn, Secretary, Gina Peirson, and Program Secretary, Howard Fair- bairn, The Westmount Y.M.C.A.Bad- n.inton Club also elected new officers to serve for the coming year. The club has been growing in strength during the past two months, and p'ans are being made for greater activity.in the new year. The officers elected were: Chairman, Robert Morrisette, Treasurer, Ray Beauchemin, and Joint Tournament Secretaries, Shirlev Eagles and Denise Hudon.BOYS DEPARTMENT: December 27 will see the Basketball Jamboree at N.D.G.‘Y’.The tourney, which features basketball teams from all the “Y's in the City, will take place for Midget and Bantams — those under 15 and those under 14, Weather permitting on Decem- her 28, there will be a ski hike on Mount Royal. The gang will he meeting at the “Y” at 10.00 o'clock.During the holiday week there will be swims at 11.00 and 4.90 daily and organized games on the gym and in the games room. The big event will be the “Penny Carnival,” so come over and get your s'‘gns and decorations made now.[Weekend Marked! Montreal Regiment, inspected the regiment at the St.Catherine Street Armoury, Westmount, on Tuesday night.General Price also presented the Regiment with a beautiful massive drum major’s baton, which will replace the one now in use.In contrast to the present baton being swung by Drum Major Bales, which was rather hurriedly constructed quite a number of years ago, and was only to be used as a temporary baton, the new one presented by the Honorary Colonel is heavily embellished with gold and silver.‘General Price addressed the regiment after the® inspection and stressed the things which.go to make a good soldier, these he said were a strict sense of duty, discipline and tradition.Origin of Regimental March He told the story behind the Regimental March of the R.M.R.“Ca Ira” (Let's Go).The song was developed about the same time as the Marseillaise in France and was the battle song of the shock troops serving under Napoleon. These shock troops attacked the West Yorks (with whom the Royal Regiment Band is now affiliated) at Valenciennes, and were driving the British back until the Colonel of the West Yorks went out in front of his men and shouted, come on men, let's beat the French at their own song.Strike up the band, he ordered, and with the stirring notes of “Ca Ira” the West Yorks went into action singing to rout the enemy. The Divisional when Recorder Charles Hale of Westmount convicted him of stealing a bicycle worth $20.He was ordered detained at the Boy's Farm and Training Schoo} for five years, but was released last August on a writ of habeas matter under deliberatiqn.Nat.W.Jacobs, K.C.acting with John Crankshaw K.C, as counsel for the boy, contended that there were many irregularities at the boy's trial and that his committal to the Boy's Farm was entirely illegal.Mr, Jacobs said that the boy was tried under the wrong part of the Criminal Code and if he were tried and found guilty under the proper part of the Code, the maximum sentence he would face would be only six months and this would be in the common jail, not the Boy's Farm.Had No Counsel He said there was illegal character evidence a@mitted during the trial and that the prosecutor had no legal standing. He also charged that the boy who had no counsel, was not advised of his right to testify or cross-examine witnesses. The hoy was charged with stealing and carrying away a bicycle with intent to deprive the alleged owner of its use and benefit.Mr.Crankshaw contended that the inclusion of the last 12 words of the charge ruled out the element of theft.Mr.Jacobs stated the charge does not exist according to law, quoting Article 347a of the Criminal Code. One of the respondents, the superintendent of the Boy's Farm said the purpose of the institution was to educate, train and care for problem and delinquent boys. These boys he said, were committed by the Juvenile Court in Montreal or any other duly constituted authority in the Province. We regard it as a reformatory school he further stated.Certificate Asked Counsel for the petitioner contended that according to the Reformatory Act such proof could not be entertained until that it made no difference under what section of the Code the boy was tried, since no prejudice was caused him.Television In.{Continued from Page 5) Mount Royal was the best possible spot for a By Rev.Canon R.Kenneth Naylor Rector of , Trinity Memorial Church We have been thinking of the preparation that was made through the centuries for the Coming of our Lord. The preparation was political, social, economic and religious, But it was no accident t 7 it was into the Hebrew race that our Lord came. That race had been specially prepared for B.A Collins FUNCRAL HOME 5610 Sherbrooke St.W, DExter 1149 AIR CONDITIONED Funeral Home and Chapel Completely that event. It was not because: they were more religious than the other peoples of the world. It was rather because they had been the recipients of the true revelation of God.From the time of Abraham it had been decreed that through them the nations of the world should be blest. To them was committed the oracles of God.The God whom they worshipped ‘n their sacrifices was the only: true God, The law that he made known to them was the will of the All- righteous God.The life which grew out of that belief and worship and obedience.was the life of righteousness. And that group in Nazareth was a true example of men and women who were righteous and were waiting for the Kingdom of God.And so He came — the Sun of Righteousness — and brought light to a world in darkness, “There was the true light, even the light which lighteth every man, coming into the world.” (R.V.) The Light lightens us.We know God better because of the Light. We know good and evil better because He has made them clear to us.How then do we observe the yearly remembrance, the Birthday of our Lord?In a way worthy of His Coming, or in a way that changes the religious aspect of it to a purely selfish, commercialized thing.Let us admit at once it is not purely selfish, for we do think NESTE oN TT J0S.C.(ARAY & BRO.FuneraL DIRECTORS Establishad 1842.A Chapel of Cathedral Beautz At your disposal without charge 125+ Mountain St@D Phone: MA.4321 of others; but we have made Christmas a very commercial affair. We have allowed buying and selling to dominate it pretty completely. But we have gone beyond commercialism and we have used Christmas, the Coming of the Son of God, as an excuse for license of a very unchristian kind.I refer to the.fact that many people do 4 not -think they have celebrated Christmas unless they have become thoroughly drunk. The stories of office parties on Christmas Eve are pretty grim. The Christmas parties in the homes, later on Christmas Eve, may be very pleasant and enjoyable affairs, or they may become simply pagan orgies. The week after Christmas may be a permanent round of family and friendly visits, or it may be a continuous excuse for frenzied drinking.Would it not be better citizenship — not to put it on any higher level — to observe Christmas more sanely ?Will it not leave us with a better memory if we have observed Christmas by offering up our worship and prayer and thanks to Almighty God for the gift of His Son in His Church?“The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.” I do not ask for puritanical observance of Christmas, but I Jo ask for a Christian sanity.R.K.Naylor THE CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS By Rev.Harvey Campbell, D.D.Westmount Park - Emmanuel United Church Christmas is a time or remembrance. We recall old times and places, old friends who have gathered about out fireside on former occasions, and friends who will gather with us this season but who will be seen only with the eye of the spirit. We remember too the Christ of Christmas. It is His day.The day set aside by grateful people for the worship of the Christ. It's not just a holiday from work and school, this Christmas. It’s not just a day of feasting and gift- giving, of jollification and hilarity. It is a day for reverent thought, for gratitude and worship.Take time to listen to the music of Christmas.Remember, Christmas began with an angel- song.“Glory to God in the Highest”.And when the bells ring, or the radio brings to us the soft, lilting tune of “Gentle Mary laid her Child Lowly in a Manger”, we realize that Christmas is for the mond Street has moved her Dog's Beauty Shop to 342A Victoria Avenue and is open for business, Make Christmas reservations early, so you won't be disappointed.WA.6687.W-20 42 PERSONALS CHILDREN’S MOVIES Special movies for children’s Birthday | Parties.Free group photo.WA.51938.W-11 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS For particulars P.O.Box 213 Station L, Westmount UPS Wednesday Westmount Thursday West End Sunday Afternoon humble folks of the world, and for those who think deeply. The shepherds were simple men who lived near to nature and had time to wonder and think. The Wise Men were scholars who sought to push back the frontiers of knowledge and dwelt with all the intentness of their fine minds on the great mysteries of life and death and God.To those two groups of people came the angel- song and the star.Let us take it easy this Christmas. Not too much partying; not too much levity; but quiet pleasures, simple enjoyments that are not inconsistent with the listening heart.Who knows? If we open our minds anew to the old, old story, maybe some of the peace of God and the love of God will come through and possess our souls.Harvey Campbell THE GOOD MAN (By Rev.Sydenham B.Lindsay Church of The Advent) What do we mean when we say that God is Almighty?A child gave this.answer: “God is Almighty, because He can make Himself into a little Baby”.That answer sums up the doctrine of the Incarnation.Christ Child inherits something from His Father and something from His Mother.God alone is His Father; and so He is a Divine Person, the only-begotten Son of God.And the Blessed Virgin Mary is His Mother, His only human parent; from her He received His human Nature, His manhood. He is Perfect God and Perfect Man.When we raise our hands to receive the Holy Communion, we partake of Christ In His fulness — His Body and Blood, His Humanity and Divinity, and we are one with Him.May that be the experience of all this Christmas-tide.Sydenham B.Lindsay rt * Stanley Presbyterian !
