Members of the Westmount Rotary Club learned the fundamentals of big game hunting in the Canadian ®orth, when they were shown movies and received a running commentary of a 20 day hunting expedition at their luncheon meeting, Wednesday. With Phil Bruneau handling the colored four reels of film and Bill White telling the story of their experience, the members were shown numerous events of the hunting party undertaken in 1946.The official part included the two men with Mr.White's wife, Marion, who was also responsible for bagging some of the game during the trip.* Excellent pictures were shown eh decided to recommend to the City Council that a referendum of citizens be taken on the question of whether Sunday sports should be permitted It was also recommended that the organ in Victoria Hall which is at present out of condition, should be replaced by a new elec- wlric organ. It was felt by the committee that the repair cost, plus the price which may be obtained for the present organ would probably more than offset the purchase price of the new electrical instrument. The Educational and Library Committee are in favour of making available to citizens long playing symphony records. It was the opinion that this service would prove a boon to those who delight in good music. Before this idea can be proceeded with, however, it will be necessary to refer to the terms of the original deed of donation of the library. The library committee will report back to the next meeting.Mr.White said that the annual Spring meeting would be held on May 2 in Victoria Hall. The committee also discovered COCHRANE WHAT NEXT?The vagaries of censors are inexplicable, So, too, in many instances, is the need for.censorship.The little dictionary which accompanied me through high school defines a censor as ‘one who examines or judges; one who finds fault.” As such the average censor is about as popular as a worm-ridden apple. This century hasn't yet overcome its desire to be.told what to think, what to do, and what to see.Hence, the censor boards that sprinkle the land with their views, their ordinances and their edicts—many of them the result of narrow, bigotted minds. When we reach the millenium, possibly even before that if more people can be educated properly, censors will be a thing of the past and each citizen will decide for himself what it is right and what it is wrong to see, hear and read. But until that time of true democracy arrives we must put up with such bodies as the Quebec film censors. There ran at the Snowdon _Theatre just about a year ago a very interesting, strictly adult production entitled “An Act of Murder.” Its central theme was euthanasia, its story very similar to that of Dr.Sanders.Last week the Seville Art Theatre announced that it would be showing the film on Saturday. Then came the revelation that they had been asked to withdraw the film at the request of the Province of Quebec censors. Why ?The answer to that question is something that I am anxiously awaiting. For I have written our dear censors and asked them, very politely, their reasons for “‘requesting” the Seville Art Theatre not to show one of the few films released from Hollywood in 1949 that was not designed for view by adolescents. When that answer comes I'll print it in the Pillar, Then we can both laugh— or groan—depending upon what we had for dinner that day.OLD BOYS Westmount High's Old Boys are expected to be out in force March 27, that’s a week from this coming Monday, for their annual reunion. This time the scene of movie comfort has been inaugurated by Wyn Currie, popular manager of West- mount’s de luxe Avenue Theatre, A special view room seating fourteen persons and completely glassed off from the rest of the auditorium has been installed in a small balcony at the rear of the theatre.“ The room is soundproof and air conditioned, thus permitting the privileged fourteen spectators to smoke and talk without disturbing the rest of the movie-goers.The sound is piped in through a loud speaker.\\ .The view room is quite small and is situated next to the operator’s booth.Settees and easy chairs make for the maximum in comfort for the fourteen persons who see the screen through a specially treated plate glas window. The room has heen designed for groups who wish to be seated together, It must be rented as a whole, no individual seats being sold. The rent for the fourteen seats is $10 plus tax a performance, which works out at 85 cents a person.Reservations for.the view room must be made in advarce. It is quite flattering that, West- mount should have been the first city in this part of the country to try out this innovation. The idea is not new, however, as many movie theatres in the United Kingdom adopted the idea many Years ago, and in Glasgow it is possible in at least one theatre to have dinner served while watching the picture on the screen.Vets May Be Admitted To D.V.A.Hospitals Westmount veterans who, up until now, have been denied treatment in hospitals administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, will be pleased to learn that regulations, according to an announcement by Vete:ans’ Minister Milton Gregg, have now been amended, to allow of the admission to these hospitals of any veteran of either war, providing he qualifies as to ability to pay the daily rate, and that there is accommodation available. The minister listed the conditions under three headings.1.There must be room for the veteran, and, undoubtedly, some time wili elapse before there is sufficient accommodation.2.The veteran must pay for hospitalization just as he would have to do in a civilian hospital.3.Veterans, such as pensioners already entitled to free care, will still get free treatment, and will have priority over others.Mr.Gregg said that rates charged would be as near as possible to those charged in civilian hospitals in the district involved.Further, the veteran will be responsible for paying the fees of the doctors who treat him, The veteran will have to arrange for, and pay, his own doctor, He also must be referred to the department by a doctor.> ‘The announcement is of potential interest to more than 1,000,- 000 veterans. It means a widening list of persons eligible for admission to a D.V.A.hospital.At present, those admitted are pensioners, recipients of burnt out pensions or veterans’ allowances, and veterans with meritorious service in a war theatre who are unab'e to provide treatment for infuriating letter was handed the boys of Westmount High as Gordie Mac- Nell, captain of the WHS Old Boys’ Hockey squad, put forth in no uncertain terms a challenge to the Senior A pucksters which cannot be taken too lightly. As the missive itself cannot be published due to space limitations, I'll relate four of the main points of the challenge: 1.Do you (the school team) want to go through with the game or do you prefer to default, thereby conceding the inevitable?2.If you decide to play it out, will you guarantee the appearance of your team?3.Do we (the Old Boys) need to line up more than five or six “old crocks,” or will you provide enough opposition for us to call on a “few spares”?4.Since the school never seems to win (the record is, one tied and two lost by the school) the Russ McConnell Memorial Trophy, we are considering having it engraved before the game with our name on it.O.K.?” 24-hour Ulttimatum I the school did not answer in 24 hours, the letter continued, the Old Boys would take it for granted that the Senior A sextet had been shamed into appearing. An alternative to playing the game was provided in a “tea dance.” The Russ McConnel Memorial Trophy was conceived five years ago in memory of one of West- mount High's all time greats in hockey and football, Russ McConnell, who was lost at sea while serving in the Canadian Navy in World War II.The trophy is presented each year to the team winning the annual exhibition game between the school and the Old Boys.AS.THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1950 Sir Arthur Currie in the second-game of their two-game, total point series for the provincial title. The Montrealers, playing on a miniature gym, took the first game at Shawinigan last Saturday by a 52-40 count.Their contest ended a l4-game win streak which the power city boys had racked up, Including victories over Quebec City and Granby along the playoff trail. The sailor boys have plenty of respect for Shawinigan and are not likely to enter this week's game with overconfidence, They claim that they had to go all out to cop the duke last week and report that last season this same Shawinigan team trounced Nationale by 40 points.Prefacing the Navy-Shawinigan game will be the intermediate women’s provincial final tilt between Montreal Meteors and Windsor Mills. This game is called for 8.00 o'clock with the males slated to take the floor immediately afterwards.M The apparent weakness in the past few games has been the in- ‘| ability of the forwards to finish | their plays with any degree of success once they maneuvre inside their opponents blue line, No doubt this can be chalked up to the inexperience of the young forwards, who freeze up when in a good scoring position.À few of the boys up front could help the situation if they could drive a little harder and forget trying to appear stylish around the goals.Possibly some of the boys have been seeing too many games at the Forum and are trying to imitate matured players instead of developing their own natural style. At any rate the teams record shows very little necessity for apology, as they have experienced a very successful season so far and are confident that they stand a fifty fifty chance of taking Catholic High in the play off.The first game of this two game total series will take place tomorrow morning at Lachine Arena, with the face-off slated for 10.00 a.m.The second game in all probability will be held early next week at the Forum.Sport Shorts Two of the school's finest athletes
