rumour has it that Hon.D.C.Abbott, member for St.portfolio as Minister of Finance.Antoine-Westmount, will shortly relinquish his The rumour alSo goes on to say that Mr.Abbott is slated to succeed the Hon.Stuart Garson as Minister of Justice.Mr.Abbott is reported as having become rather tired of the finance post, and would welcome a change, The Hon.Alphonse Fournier's name is also mentioned in the proposed cabinet shuffle, with Mr.Fournier said to be looking for an appointment to a vacancy on the Quebec bench. The news of Mr.Abbott's move * from the Ministry of Finance Is said to be welcomed by some of his closer friends, who feel that he is the logical successor to Mr.St.Laurent as premier. While one of the most important portfolios in the cabinet, the job of Minister of Finance is frobably the most unpopular.Decisions, which in some cases are not well received, have to be made by the Finance Minister, and naturally the minister is blamed for the legislation.A point in mind was the furore raised by the hike in rents, and the proposed removal of rent control.Mr.Abbott was the main target for the abuse which was fired at the government, although probably the rest of the cabinet had as much to do with order No.813, as the Finance Minister. If Mr.Abbott becomes Minister of Justice, this will make three cabinet posts which he has filled, Defence, Finance, and Justice. If he is to succeed Mr.St.Laurent as Premier, the training he has received will stand him in good stead. One Man Injured In Car Collision At Cor.Lansdowne John O'Neill, 46, of 2325 Oxford Avenue, Notre Dame de League, who will lose their playing field at Atwater park next year owing to the recent sale of the property and the announced intention of the new owner to start building on the ground just as soon as the present ball season ends, has caused the league officials to start looking around for a new stance, It is learned from a usually reliable source that the league are trying to make arrangements to play next season on the vacant farm lot in front of the West- mount Athletic Grounds which runs back to Western Avenue, If the league is successful in acquiring playing rights on this piece of ground which is quite large, it is the intention to fence the property in and to charge for admission to the games, instead of going around with the gpllec- tion box.‘ The new location would be a natural for the league and should be a money maker as it is central and would still continue to cater tot the same patrons who have followed the Atwater League games over the years.Olieeses LAE EXTRA Columbia University, after graduating from McGill, gave four of the major problems and differences held by the two groups, stating that some solution to the problem can be maintained.“In my when nearly $1,000,- 000,000 is at stake. The basic difference in wages was a second point stressed by the speaker, who claimed that management thinks wages should be given in accordance with the rest of the area and type of work, and that excess profits be turned into making the firm larg; er.But unions want the profits to go to their members, which will, in turn, give them added strength. On the question of work, management expects a normal amount of good work done for a day's pay, while the union feels that work should be spread around so that there is work for all, so there will be no unemployment. The fourth question concerned the power of the union, with management feeling they should deal only with the problems concerning them.“But many unions want their feet under the boardroom table, taking part in the discussion on how much should be allotted to advertising, production and procedure by the administration”.He cited a case where a union tried to stop the executive from putting new lights in the building. In suggesting solutions for what he called, “an exceptionally serious problem”, Mr.Gardner said that management was partly to blame in many cases. He supported the idea that management should be more professional, and that supervision needs improving.“The position of labour and industrial relations needs just as much study as any other profession”, the speaker said in closing. He was introduced by Robert Clarke and thanked by Ted Harrison of the Westmount Rotary Club. The man was in a robust mood as he read the following ad everywhere that here is a film not to be missed.Such a picture is “The Hasty Heart.” Film shot in England under the direction of Vincent Sherman, and starring Donald Reagan, Patricia Neal and Richard Todd, the English star.It comes to the West- mount Theatre on Sunday. The word wasn't long in getting around. As soon as the film was completed and screened for the first select audiences in Hollywood, critics and preview patrons alike rushed to sing its praises.Louella Parsons, on her nation- | wide radio and newspaper hookup, said, “In ‘Hasty Heart’ a new star is born.Richard Todd gives an extraordinarkily fine performance in a picture that is so good that it is an improvement on the stage play.” The noted columnist and radio celebrity, Dorothy Kilgallen, had to say, “ ‘Hasty Heart’ is wonderful! THE EXAMINER, Speirs-Miller Summer School Near Montreal Speirs-Miller Summer School open to young artists. After many years of preparation, a dream has come true for Betty Speirs who now has an ideal Summer School in a lovely country locale within commuting distance of Montreal. This idea originated through young teachers and dancers coming to Montreal in the summertime vo study for their winter's work.Swimming, fishing, riding and other recreations all make for a happy time. This lovely old farm, completely veniences and facilities, and the huge studio will certainly see lots of action this summer with the addition of barn dances held for the local people and ballroom classes for the younger set, most of whom are Macdonald College graduates. In these lovely surroundings the young aspirants to success in their chosen field may have tuition in ballet, ballroom, modelling, tap and singing.Wealth of Great Music In Disney Opus Walt Disney, master of music in the visual sense, produced his great concert feature “Fantasia,” in color by Technicolor in 1940, and today the picture continues tod raw enraptured audiences to its repeat engagements. This astounding film, playing at the Seville Art Theatre, contains the works of some of the greatest composers in musical history. It is a concert for the ear and eye both.Under the brilliant direction of Leopold Stokowski, the Philadelphia Orchestra plays eight great treasures of music, while on the screen. The characters in this full-length entertainment range from the familiar and well-loved Mickey Mouse to flying horses, centaurs and cen- taurettes, ludicrous ostrich dancers and bellowing volcanoes.Hundreds of Disney fans has been clamoring for a film based on Tsaikovsky's “Nutcracker Suite.” Thus it was only natural that this beloved music should be included.Dukas’ y tgeil Suite.: lov Dukas’ lively and catchy music “The Sorcerer's Apprentice” is played with Mickey Mouse as the mischievous amateur magician, interpreted on the screen in terms of dinosaurs and the world in the throes of Creation.Beethoven's masterful symphony No.6, known the world over as the Pastoral Symphony, is given animation by centaurs, centaurettes, unicorns, flying horses, cupids, gods and godesses.Moussorgsky's weird and violent “Night on Bald Mountain,” is contrasted with Schubert's majestic “Ave Maria.” who sees the puppets as a child’s enjoyment only, and Winifred Dennis, who supports Burggraf's opinion by virtue of her work with the younger set as a social worker.Stage settings were another feature of the vroduction, effectively designed by Hans Berends.— Mel James.remodelled, has all modern con-, Stravinsky's “Rite of Spring” is | WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1950 “The Heiress”— A film that lives up to all the wonderful things that fave been said about it arrives at the Monkland Saturday until Tuesday. It is William Wyler's Paramount production, ‘“The Heiress" and it is a worthy successor to that outstanding producer's two Academy Award-winning pictures “Mrs.Miniver” and “The Best Years of Our Lives”.From every standpoint ‘The Heiress” has been invested with greatness.Greatness of performance was assured ,.and achieved .by co-starring the nation’s number one lady of the cinema, Olivia de Havilland, with the newest male heart-throb, Montgomery Clift, ‘and the world's most distinguished character actor, Ralph Richardson. The less important roles, _too, were carefully and perfectly filled.Heading the supporting cast are Miriam Hopkins, who portrays Miss de Haviland's understanding aunt, Mona Freeman, Vanessa Brown, Selena Royle and Ray Collins.Miss de Havilland in the title role gives one of her most brilliant characterizations as the shy, repressed girl who is courted by handsome man-about-town Clift and who falls wildly in love with him, The story concerns her father's efforts to prove to her that Clift is attracted only by her money, and when his threat to disinherit her if she marries him does, indeed, affect their” romance, Olivia emerges as a different kind of person, capable of taking cruel revenge on both her father and her suitor.Greatness of production was achieved by the luxurious settings and costuming, and by the obvious attention to every detail, for which Mr.Wyler is so justly famous. And greatness of story is unchallenged, since ‘The Heiress” At the Monkland Theatre Saturday “Holiday Affair” was adapted from the Broadway stage hit based on Henry James’ celebrated novel, “Washington Square”.All in all, “The Heiress" adds up to one of the all-time greats of the screen, definitely a film to be seen and cherished.PAGE THIRTEEN “char Todd gives the greatest performance of BARBARA STANWYCK WENDELL COREY “Thelma Jordon” in PAUL KELLY -
