Canada's Metropolis | : yoL.XXi, Ne.32 CIVIL DEFENCE M WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1950 Romans Had Modern System Of Heating, Rotarians Told The science and technicalities involving heat for home, office or factory, were stressed by Harry Houston, who gave a classification talk to his fellow members of the Westmount Rotary Club, Wednesday.Mr.Houston, a partner in the plumbing and heating business with his father, outlined the scientific composition of heat, claiming that it can neither be created or destroyed at any time."He pointed out that heat is produced by friction, chemical change and electricity, and that it may be transferred from one body to another by three distinct methods.Unity Boys Club Unofficially Opened Monday The reality of the Westmount Rotary Club's Unity Boys’ Club was realized Monday morning, when the first registrations were made for members.Rotary Club president Frank Kenwood announced that 35 boys ‘and girls signed the membership card application on Monday, and pointed out that a minor program was being run on Tuesday afternoon for the new members.’ “It is not of course in full operation yet,’ Mr.Kenwood said at the luncheon meeting Wednesday, “but we are now open on a small scale and will continue to grow.” Mr, Kenwood also announced that it is the directors’ intention to have one of the luncheon meetings in the early weeks of September held at the Unity Boys' Club.He did not state when the official opening would take place, at which time it is hoped that the Rotary International President, Arthur Legieux of Quebec City will officiate, but said that the executive director of the club, Alan Moss, is carrying out a preliminary program immediately.Several Rotary .Club members have also joined in the work by taking posts as chairmen for the various committees.+ Outlining these methods, Mr.Houston said that when heat from a body of higher is placed in a body of lower temperature, method is called conduction. He said that suits are pressed in this manner, whereas heat from the sun is called radiation. The third mode of heat is known as convection and is possible with fluids where the lower area when heated expands and forces its way to the top with the colder fluid being forced to the bottom. The speaker, who was introduced by Donald Ross, said there were two main ways of heating a home, the indirect and direct methods.Briefly he termed the indirect method as one where cold air is passed from a room through a heating chamber and returned as heated air by means of duct work.“ “The direct method is usually operated without any provision for ventilation,” Mr.Houston said.In going into detail about the various systems used to heat the average home, the speaker said that while radiant heating by circulating warm air through shallow ducts under the floor is considered more expensive, it was used by the Romans 2000 years ago.He pointed out that heating by electricity in Canada is practically unknown, but many experiments in this type of heating are taking place in California at the present time.A specially designed type of wallpaper is needed for this type of heating, Mr.Houston said, “and then it would be possible to plug (Continued on page 2) Unity Club Finished Tools, Books Needed The Westmount Rotary Club is appealing for donations of handicraft tools, power tools, equipment for woodwork and leathercraft, and library books to help equip the Unity Boys’ Clubhouse, on Greene avenue, just below Dorchester street, Westmount. One of the most modern clubhouses of its kind in Canada, the project was sponsored by the Westmount Rotary Club, with the assistance of other citizens interested in boys’ work.Included among the club’s facilities are a gymnasium, library, snack bar, club and games rooms.A special department has been provided for handicraft work to be conducted under the supervision of an expert.fices are also provided in the new building. The Rotary Club of Westmount, proposes to open the clubhouse in the fall, and all that is needed now that the structure is practically completed, is the equipment now being sought.A minimum of basic moveable equipment hag already been provided from what remained from the building fund, and it is hoped that donations from private individuals, firms, and hobbyists, who have spare equipment.will enable this de- Administrative of- * partment to be completely equipped by early fall, while books for the library suitable for boys and girls, between the ages of eight and fourteen, will also be welcomed.Allen Moss, executive director of the Unity Boys’ Club, Fitzroy 9397, will make arrangements with Westmount Rotarians to pick up ail contributions offered. The club has accommodation for 400 young people and serves ‘the district of southeast Westmount for supervised recreation during evenings and non-school hours.the |.Mayor J.S.Cameron Band Programmes attend Lhe thirteenth annual conference of the Canadian Federation of Mayors katoon from August 21 to 24.The Montreal office of the Federation announces that preparations ced, and that matters of urgent enda.Outstanding among these is the role of municipalities in civil defence, which is growing in importance with the tense international It is imperative, therefore, that the mayors of Canada confer on this matter with a minimum of delay.Otherwise separate and individual action by municipalities, may lead to confusion and un-co- ordinated effort. For this reason alone, the Saskatoon meeting of the Federation is of timely and paramount importance.Mayor George C.MacLean, of St.Boniface, Man., president of the Federation, said that both Gen, F.F.Worthington, national co-ordinator of civil defence, and Brig.R.E.A.Morton, who directed the fight against the Manitoba flood disaster, will be in attendance, and that plans will be mapped out at the meeting for the setting up of a co-ordinated civil defence plan, for the guidance of all municipalities.Mayor MacLean expressed the hope and conviction that agreement will be reached between the railway employees .and companies before the strike deadline, and for this reason plans will not be changed for the meeting. In the meantime, the Defence Department at Ottawa has announced that the department is preparing a series of pamphlets of vital interest to millions of Canadians. They will be made public within the next month or two, and will ‘have the purpose of telling the people, what to fear and what not to fear, in what military people call “A-B-C warfare,” that is, attack by atomic, bacteriological and chemical weapons. They will also tell what it is proposed to do to provide defence against them.Hon.Brooke Claxton, American Society of Training Directors held in Chicago in the spring.Mr.Berry has been active in personnel work in Montreal since 1945.He attended high school at St.Leo's Academy then received his college training at St.Fran- cls Xavier University and Uni- versity of Toronto.New Regulations For Taxi Drivers Suggested Here Westmounters are wondering whether the City Council will take steps to implement a resolution passed by the Montreal Trades and Labor Council, advocating that taxi-drivers carry identification cards, with their pictures, addresses and fingerprints. Some Westmount residents would go further, and insist that the system in vogue in New York, where a picture of the taxi-driver with his name shovs- ing must be affixed above tne dash board. In passing the resolution the Labor Council noted that there had been many holdups by taxi drivers in recent weeks, and they asked that no one with a criminal record should be granted a license.‘The resolution is addressed tu Mayor Camilien Houde.Hit by Tramcar- Taken to Hospital K.C.Winans, 58, 317 Metcalte avenue, Westmount, was taken to St.Luke Hospital on Friday after noon at 3 p.m.suffering from a WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, AUGUST 11, 1950 The Pillar By GEORGE COCHRANE CULTURE CORNER Did William Shakespeare really write “Hamlet,” “King Lear,” “Macbeth” and the other immortal dramas which English anthologies attribute to him?Yes, is the answer you'll get from the majority. But there is still in existence an extremely vocal minority who claim that it is impossible for a man like Shakespeare to give birth to the most memorable series of plays the English language has ever known. The Shakespeare discreditors belong to an international group known as the Baconians.Their mission in life is to convince others that the man who wrote “The Merchant of Venice” and the other Shakespearean plays was Sir Francis Bacon who, according to Pope, “was the greatest genius that England or perhaps any other country ever produced.” The Baconians and your Pillar compiler got together during the past week when I came across a pamphiet by a gentleman named Walter Ellis entitled “The Shakespeare Myth.” Shakespeare, according to Mr.Ellis, was little more than a stumblebum. He sets forth his claims in a style that one expects to find more often in a Communist propaganda pamphlet than in a serious literary treatise. The first paragraph of the work should give you the general ‘idea: Ben Jonson, Elizabethan dramatist, and Edmund Spenser the poet, were both enshrined in Westminster Abbey.William Shakespeare, their contemporary, was not so honored. Why?Because at the time of his death in 1616 — caused by a surfeit of drinking — no one associated his name in any way with the Shakespeare Plays. There is no record that he laid claim to the authorship of the stupendous works during his lifetime as Clara Schumann are shown Seville Art Theatre.AT SEVILLE ART THEATRE Robert Walker as Johannes Brahms and Katherine Hepburn here in a scene from “Song of Love,” story of Robert and Clara Schumann now playing at the by so much as a word, and in his will, which provided for the minutest item of his worldly goods, plays, poems, copyrights or books, not one scrap of printed paper; end of his life than at the beginning.” same hysterical type of prose, goes on to build up what might appear to be a pretty convincing case for the Baconians. But it is a case supported solely by circumstantial evidence, by coincidence, by a below-the-belt form of invective.Ellis even delves into numerology to prove, (he thinks) that the plays are dotted with Bacon's signature.'Tis all very flimsy. This is most certainly an interesting little pamphlet to while away the minutes on a street car ride — but it isn't likely to do much to change the views of anyone with an ounce of reasoning ability encased in his skull, The Baconian theory is currently in disrepute with the greybeards of the universities.Books like this one of Ellis's aren't likely to change the picture.Y.M.C.A.NOTES BOYS" He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” (John 9:1, 7, 24 and 25).The Lesson-Sermon also includes the following passage from the Christian Science textbook “Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy: “Knowing that Soul and its attributes were forever manifested through man, the Master healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, feet to the lame, thus bringing to light the scientific action of the divine Mind on human minds and bodies and giving a better understanding of Soul and salvation.Sight, hearing, all of the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost.If it were possible for the real senses of man to be injured, Soul could reproduce them in all their perfection; but they cannot be disturbed nor destroyed, since they exist in immortal Mind, not in matter.” (Pages 210, 486 and 488).You're pretty much all right with your friends when you are willing to admit you're all wrong when you are, CALVARY CHURCH Dorchester Street at Greene Avenue Westmount Minister: Very Rev.T.W.Jones, M.A., D.D.Gifford Mitchell, B.A., Mus.Bac.Organist and Choir Director Sunday, August 13th Union Services of Calvary United and First Baptist Church in CALVARY UNITED ) at 11.00 a.m.and 7.30 p.Preacher: Very Rex.JT.w.M.A, m, Jones, A Most Cordial Invitation Is Extended To All, Including Visitors To The City, To Attend These Services.James United Church 463 St Catherine Street West Rev.Thomas E.McLennan, D.D.Minister: Rev.B.B.Brown, own, Visiting Minister Sunday, Aug August 13th 11.00 a.m.Morning Service, Subject: “O Come Let Us Worship.” 7.30 p.m.Evening Service.Subject: “The Best Is Now.” Rev.Doctor W.E.Dudley, .D, L.L.ID.Will Preach At Both Services.Mr.Warner Norman, Organist St.Jumes Extends a Cordial Welcome To Summer Visitors * : | Westmount Baptist 1 * The ministry at the Westmount Baptist Church will be conducted on Sunday by one of her own sons, Rev.J.Gordon Jones, O.B.E,, D.D., Ph.D,, Minister of the First Baptist Church, Calgary, and formerly of the James St.Baptist Church, Hamilton. As his title indicates, Dr.Jones rendered conspicuous service as a senior chaplain to the forces overseas during World War IIL By others than Baptists he will be remembered as a son of the late Alderman Arthur Jones of West- mount. His topics, chosen for treatment at Sunday's services are, “No Cross -
