Council has authorized the purchase of a sand dryer, used in connection with the sanding of Westmount sidewalks during the winter, At the same meeting, Monday, the Council also authorized the purchase of a mechanical sand spreader. This machine, the first to he tried in Westmount, will sand the sidewalks instead of it being done by hand.A spokesman for the city said that while a machine of this type may not be the answer to all problems, it was an attempt to start on the mechanization of that service. The Council also approved of the purchase of seven acres of land at the intersection of Upper Lachine Road and the Ste.Anne de Bclle- vue highway. This spot will be used as a disposal site for inert materials including snow.At the same time the Council secured a lease with the Grey Nuns’ property, bordering on St.Catherine street, Redfern, Wesl- ern and Clarke avenues, to use the lot as a snow disposal place from November to May.A spokesman for the City cited the co-operation given by the Grey Nuns’ officials, and said that at no time would either spot become a nuisance such as generally is the case with disposal sites.Cote St.Antoine Will Be Widened Cote St.Antoine Road will he widened from Metcalfe avenue to Kensington avenue, through the purchase of a strip of land from the congregation of Shaar Hasho- mayin Synagogue. The purchase of the land was authorized at the Westmount City council meeting on Monday nignt. It is understood that the widening of Cote St.Antoine will be proceeded with in the spring. The new electrical sub-station on Olivier avenue will soon be Addresses St.Leo, St.Paul, Grads Monsignor Lawrence P.Whelan, Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal, told graduates of St.Leo's and St.Paul's academies on Sunday night that there is a growing tendency among people today to divorce religion and morality.Presiding at the commencement exercises of the two academies held in the Church of the Ascension of Our Lord, Westmount, Bishop Whelan warned the graduates of the temptations to be encountered in life which would tend to make them indifferent to morality and religion.Human nature naturally empowered for truth and good, does not change easily, Bishop Whelan stressed, but the danger lies where the world tells people how to serve the world and to put religion out of their lives. Many young people are regular church-goers and perform acts of religion,” yet they may read magazines or go to see moving pic- tyres which are injurious to their minds. There is a desire to serve | God but there is also pressure on all sides to turn them away from Him, he said. There - are few wicked but many weak-willed people in the world, Weakness leads to indifference, and indifference to sin, Bishop Whelan declared.Major winners of honors in the St, Paul's class was Miss Ruth Sheridan, the valedictorian.A (Continued on Page 2) These were presented by+- 800% or over out of a possible J.H.Molson Heads St.John Amb.Fund John H.Molson of 634 Clarke
