it is built on a solid ” foundation, Murray Chipman, Montreal Manager of the MacLean- Hunter Publishing Company, told members of the Westmount Rotary Club at its luncheon meeting, Wednesday.Claiming that it is only a forerunner of things to come, he said that Canadians are a curiously modest people, and that it was important that we become aware of the country’s giant recovery from the depression years.Quoting a number of facts and figures on the growing importance of Canada as a nation.Mr.Chip-* man said that “we had the right to break from the log cabin ideas.” He pointed out that Canada's industrial output had doubled since 1939, that 1,031 new industries have started in the last six years, and that American capital in Canada through investments amounted to $900,000.000 from 1946 to 1949.‘This, he said, is proof that other nations see the future of Canada assured.” Claiming, also, that Canada has the second highest standard of living in the world, Mr.Chipman declared that some reasons for the growth were due to stable government, sound labour policies the natural resources of the country. The speaker also outlined some of the basic principles which Can- | ada plays in the world crisis of the present day.He said that it was almost impossible to draw a comparison with the part that the United States js playing in the world. He said that he did not think it was a good idea to have compulsory service at this time, but that Canada‘should try to have three things ready: the defend herself, to contribute to the North Atlantic Plans, and to have a reserve in the event of another world war.“The Government is making demands on us for our own security, he said, but pointed out that (Continued on Page 4) G.McCoy Retires From CNR.A working career, over stretching more than half a century, came to a close Tuesday when G.E.McCoy, 4435 Sherbrooke street, Westmount, assistant chief of car equipment, Canadian National Railways, retired under the pension rules of the company. For the past eight years, Mr.McCoy has assisted in the preparation of specifications and plans for new and converted equipment and in supervising the maintenance of more than 115.000 freight and passenger cars.Mr.McCoy received a leatherbound testimonial and a matched set of travelling bags from his railway associates, the presentations being made by E.R.Battley.chief of motive power and car equipment for the system. On behalf of Donald Gordon, C.M.G., chairman and president, S.F.Dingle, vice-president, operation, gave Mr.McCoy a letter of: congratulations and good wishes, and, with it, a life pass.good for travel over the entire C.N.R.sys tem.i Westmount is probably less, in from the pre-school level through books and young readers.1a regular PRICE 3 CENTS City Librarian Reports Increase In Circulation Miss Kathleen Jenkins, city annual report covering 1950 states librarian for Westmount, in her that nearly thirty thousand books were loaned to residents during the past year.Miss Jenkins’ report is most interesting and covers a wide range of different phases of library work including the current preference in books. The civic library which has served the community for several decades continues to hes well patronized and it is felt that Miss Jenkins’ remarks will prove interesting reading. Her report follows: “As the first half of the twentieth century has drawn to a close, much has been written and said, throughout Canada, of the privileges and responsibilities of democracy.* Perhaps, in introducing this report, it will not be considered presumptuous to present “the public library” as a symbol, in miniature, of this democratic privilege.Children and Young People , Since the child population of proportion to the total, than in many sections of Greater Montreal, it is pleasant to be able to report an increase in loans of 3,064.~ Totalling 29,972 or 19% of total circulation, these books were issued to boys and girls of all ages, to the junior high school grades. To our two staff members, responsible for this particular department, Miss McEwen and Miss Fraser, I would pay tribute for the enthusiasm and imagination they have shown in bringing together Book Talks To Schools’ Typical of their activities were the following.Pook talks were given to eighteen classes in the Junior High School, and another”eighteen classes from .the elementary schools visited the Library.Stories, in the Library, were told to 832 children. The Home and School Associations of three schools—King's, Queen's and Roslyn—each devoted meeting to children’s books and reading, with adresses from Miss McEwen and myself.Handicraft books were sent to the Westmount Hobby Show, and small exhibits of photography and pottery, the work of high school pupils, were arranged in the Library.) Girl Guides were helped to qualify for their readers’ badges, and stories of Indian folklore were told to the boys attending the summer Y.M.C.A.Camp Westmount.Young Canada Book Week Young Canada's Book Week, celebrated throughout Canada in November, brought much activity into our midst, more especially as our staff was responsible for much of the Montreal planning.and in particular, for the newspaper publicity. All through the year, too.came a steady stream of requests from parents and teachers: What shall we give our children to read?At what age?How can we best spend fifty dollars for children’s books? What is available about?and then many subjects.Miss McEwen herself reports thus: “Just as the adult book world has its interest centred in a certain type of story, so has the juvenile. This year, it has been cowboys and Indians, with traing for the very young a close second.11.(Continued on page 5) St.Matthias Had Excellent Year, Meeting Is Told The Annual Vestry Meeting of St.Matthias’ Church was held on Tuesday, January 30, the Rector, Rev.Canon Gilbert Oliver, presiding: and was well attended by both men and women of the congregation. The wardens, Messrs.Leonard W.Taylor and Arthur L.Eke, reported that the church finances were in a sound condition, and that many improvements had been made during the year to the church property.A cordial welcome was extended to the Rev.Peter R.M.Farrell, who joined the staff September last.A report was made on the Every Member visit of the parish by ‘Mr, B.V.Atkinson, who pointed out that the results of the visit had been most encouraging, and that over 100 new families had been added to the parish list.A hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Leonard W.Taylor upon the conclusion of his term of office as rector’s warden; teachers attending the UN- ESMO geography school, held last summer at MacDonald College From Canada came a number of librarians, including one from St.John's, Newfoundland; library school students from McGill; was’ well presented by the Trinity Players last week, with some fine portrayals being given by the cast. While noted as a Canadian drama, there is no Canadian theme in the production, the plot ° being centered in a small French village and the characters being; a British army officer who has been sent to build a bridge in the area, a French family where he is lodging, consisting of an old woman, her daughter, who is accused of being a colaboratrice, and her six year old son, whose father is a German soldier. The soldier is also a character of the produc- .| tion’ when he is sent with a group of prisoners to work on the bridge. On this Mr.Schull has built his play, and while some repetition in the lines is apparent, he has not in any way become ambgiuous in his characterizations. All characters are needed in the production, each one adding something to the power and forcefulness of the plot.Trinity Players, under the direction of Charles Rittenhouse, assembled a fine cast for the production.Outstanding was Kenneth Haslam as the British major, who showed a fine knowledge of the role, and was most convincing in his speech and actions throughout.Lenore Osborne, playing the self-pitying daughter, who refused to show any love for her “Boch” child, was also well cast, being particularly effective in her display of hatred and heartless continence.Rene Almond as the grandmother was another star of the play, giving at all times a careful and sincere portrayal, while Gary Burggraf as the six-year-old child was remarkable in his easy unaffected grace on stage.Others taking part were Kenneth Davey and Leonard Osborne, British Tommies, who supplied the 10 > ns With a slate of five com- comedy relief for the tense drama, goes.Portraying a gentleman's gentleman who finds himself very much out of place in a rough, | tough cattle town, Hope is every inch the swaggering, lovable coward whenever danger threatens. And scripters Edmund Hartmann and Robert O'Brien have had it threaten often.Part of the time’ Bob is called upon to impersonate’ a British earl, and in that capacity he meets President Theodore
