[" Serving the City of Westmount, Garden Suburb of Canada’s Metropolis WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 1951 PE Ne VOL, XXII, No.33 PRICE 3 CENTS LOCAL CIVIL DEFENCE ACTIVE Summer Fun Club Now In Full Swing At Westmount “Y” The Summer Fun Club, West- mount Y.M.C.A.'s August program for boys 9 to 16 years of age, was officially started last week.Following a brief registration session, he Club wasted no time in getting on with the program.A “Water Party,” conducted by Douglas Seller, Program Director, ptarted off the chain of special vents which marked the first week of the Fun Club.Movies, trips, tours, crafts; sing songs, swimming programs and swimming instruction were included in the week’s activities. Two highlights of the first week were a tractor competition and a marathon 6-hour bike race. The tractor competition was won by the Braves with Jim Atkinson's hand-made tractor going the long- got distance.Second was the edoinks tractor made hy Peter hite, and in third place was Bill Johnstone's of the Apaches.hese toy tractors were made by the boys in their craft sessions. In the marathon bike race, the Bedolnks, led by such speedsters Pierre Carriere and Don Seller, flashed by the finish flags with a ne-lap lead. One of the main features of the es this week was a trip to Central Y.M.C.A.to participate in # City-wide Inter-“Y” Swim Meet. The Westmount swimmers proved too much for the other “Y’’’s, and captured the meet with a total of 61 points.N.D.G.Branch was second with 46 points, schedule.- Participate in Summer Program Jane and Jane McArthur participate in the summer program for pre-school children held at Murray Park, Nearly 30 Westmount mothers banded together under the aid of the Recreation Department of the city and formulated a program for their children.A 15 minute splash period in the wading pool ‘was part of the Community Nursery Idea In Murray Park Works A group of Westmount mothers have just accomplished the impossible by successfully putting across their summer program for pre-school children.About 20 mothers banded together under the leadership of Mrs.N.E.Brown, recreation supervisor; to create a program whereby they could leave their children off at Murray Park each morning.Unique and untried, this program caused the eyebrows of the city fathers to shoot up in scepticism. But pessimism was a poor substitute for the imaginations of these ladies.Tied down by their toddlers in the hot and humid weather they were looking for something thatw would be an “Al” substitute to a cottage in the country plus a nursemaid.Ever try to do the week’s shopping with a couple of screaming youngsters sampling the cherries and cookies in the store at every chance ?Ever try to do the morning’s housework and worry about thosa toddlers out on the street?Well, the solution was a dilly. All the mothers had to do was to take the youngsters to the park and leave them there to romp and play.Every morning of the week from Monday to Friday, 9 tn 11:30, they would bo left off at Murray Park with as many as 47 other toddlers their own age.The only catch was that four of the mothers had to volunteer to help each day with the supervising. If they failed to appear to take their turn their youngsters were barred from the fun, It was a picture of democracy at work. The mothers, French and English speaking, representad the Catholic and Protestant Home and School Associations of Westmount as well as a corresponding group of Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue. They formulated their own program, supervised the children.White identification hats were given all the youngsters to wear while in the park. The morning's program consisted of a gong period, rest and refreshment, a dip in the wading (Continued on page 2) Women's Army May Locate On Westmount Site It is learned that the Department of National Defence has under consideration the purchase of one or two buildings on” Sherbrooke street, near Greene avenue. If either of the buildings is purchased it is understood that it would be used to heuse the newly created Canadian Women's Army Corps.Whether the premises would be used as a barracks or merely as a headquarters for the corps is.not clear. It will be recalled that what is now St.Sulpice Barracks M.D.No.4 Headquarters of the Quebec Command on Atwater Avenue was purchased from Roman Catholic Church authorities at the beginning of the last war.The St.Sulpice Barracks were used by the C.W.A.C.and proved to be very suitable after considerable alterations had been effected.Presumably the properties being considered on Sherbrooke Street would require considerable remodelling before being found satisfactory for the Women's Army.‘Brig.DeLalanne States Training Courses to Start A meeting of Westmount Civil Defence Wardens was held in the offices of the local organization at the Westmount Athletic Building on Tuesday night, under the chairmanship of Digtrict.Chief Warden Brigadier J.A.DeLalanne.Attending the meeting were: His Worship Mayor J.A.Cameron, T.J.Hughes, City Manager, Chief of Police R.A.Byford, N.T.Dawe, Col.R.D.Harkness, J.H.Drummond Ross, Brigadier A.E.D, Tremain, Jacques Senecal, F.E.H.Gates, N.A.Fellowes, G.B.Puddicombe, K.C,, W.H.Carling, and Lieut.-Col.P.W.Cook, Director Civil Defence for Westmount.* ‘Wardens, The meeting decided to go ahead with the Training Course for the question of the timing and organization of the Course to be decided by the Civil Defence Planning Committee under direction of Brig.DeLalanne at an early date.Post areas were finally fixed and the corresponding maps are in process of preparation. The next step said Brig Delalanne is for Sector Wardens to appoint their Post ‘Wardens.Approximately fifty Post Wardens are needed in Westmount.Citizens who have already volunteered for service as Wardens will be contacted within the next few weeks by their Sector Wardens.A handbook of Warden Responsibilities and Duties is in the course of preparatiin and will be ready for distribution by the time the Courses commence.Brig DeLalanne remarked that the Group and Sector Wardens already appointed have been most generous in giving of their time during the summer months in working out an organization which will come into full swing just after Labor Day.He said it was a tribute to the public spirit of Westmount citizens that so much work has been done during the summer season. The proposed Training Syllabus for the Warden Section has been issued by the local civil defence office. The lectures and instruc tional periods will take about six weeks with two evenings per week being taken up.Each evens ing will be broken into two separate periods.District Administratifnal < .Control ve The courses will be taken by all wardens up to and including Sector Wardens. The proposed syllabus looks very comprehensive follows: a) Civil Defence Organization: 1.C.D.and local organization, 2 periods.~ b) Warden Section: 1.Organization, 1 period (Air Raid Warning Technique, Householder Register).2.Duties, 2 periods (Organisation of Self Help parties, Knowledge of area, Security).which is as 3.Warden Post (Installation and area), 1 period.e) Pre-disaster Operational Responsibilities of Wardens: 1.Log Book, Channel of Mountain Top is Warmer Than Lower Westmount The top of Westmount mountain is not so Cool at night as the corner of Sherbrooke street and Victoria avenue. This is the opinion of Jeffrey, E.Aronin, a young graduate of archilecture from McGill University, who is worxmg on the problem of building houses in a climate like that of Montreal.Mr.Aronin graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor of architecture degree and is an associate of the American Institute of Architects, His first project, a recreation centre in New York City, is already under construction. There are, many who will violently disagree with the statement of the young architect but the find-% ing was not arrived at until a number of tests had been made.10-degree Difference Mr.Aronin said that on a hot summer hight he and his assistants and noted a difference of tants noted a difference of Avenue and Sherbrooke Street, and the top of Sunnyside Avenue — a distance of three quarters of a mile.: “It was ten degrees hotter on Sunnyside,” he said.He explained that after the direct rays of the sun had been removed the “cool air rests on the slopes of the mountain, and then flows downwards forming pools of cool air lower down.” Mr.Aronin said that houses -|could be built in such a way that they could catch the maximum benefit of these streams of cool -air which start coming down the mountain about an hour after sunset.- “If you want to be really cool in the day time the logical place to go is a park,” he said “and that is not only because it looks cool, but because the grass and the trees do not absorb nearly as much heat as buildings, and also because they evaporate water and generate their own kind of refrigeration.” EL eT Ts = vec en a di a “mess she 0e - 12 a Stine rtm tt adr ae Ati: thea eue A, ves ~ me oti enis 2 ce Tes Fda sé, 4 À 1 ; followed by Jimmy, a very quiet type with a good boot, followed in turn by Johnny, much the same type as Jimmy. Then came Ramsey, the tearing eyes- closed-type, smashing his way through.Phillips Brothers The Phillips brothers, Henry, with his fiery temper and wings on his feet in hockey, followed by Johnny and Doug, both quiet and much the same type. Then the Christie’s, Mowatt, tall and mother nature was putting on for them. The wading pool was the most successful- item’ on the agenda.Frolicking in the water for fifteen minutes brought the French children along the point of where they were soon trying out their English. There was nothing backward about Paul.He was the extrovert of the bunch and found his favorite outlet in yanking the tresses of a little girl. This teaser came quickly into line when told the girl might drown in the pool if he didn't look after her.Tha change was magic and soon he was the most responsible of the group. With the program coming to a close tHese Westmount mothers can look back on an idea successfully carried out to their own benefit and the development of their children.* very quiet, followed by the one and only irrepressible Pat (Battle of Britain Ace).Pat told me one day on the park after joining the Air Force, “You know, Sir, it is my ambition to fly low over the school and clip the flag pole and land on the park.” What a likable lad he was.Another family with opposites were the Campbell's, Donnie the older, with a very hot temper and poor eyesight, but what a competitor, and Hugh, the younger, with a good temper as well.He was the long rangy type and a smart tackler in football. Both were good at baseball. The Nesbit’s, Aird was the older, the smooth voluble type, wheread Dean (B.of B.Ace), was the quietest yet most effective player at the school. The Hellyer brothers, Buddy the elder, the rushing bent-for-leather type, while Ian was a real smoothie. The McConnell’s, the one-and- only Russ, a real player and easy to handle, then Ross, a slower moving type, followed by Austin.(All school coaches have to contend with the problem of young players immitating outstanding players even though they are not of the same type). This was Austin’s fault, otherwise playing his own game he was good. The Hamilton’s The Hamilton's, Alex and his younger brother.Alex, like Donnie Smith, was a top scholar as well as athlete.Donnie’s younger brother Angus was always around sports as manager, but never participated. The Nicolson’s, John and Bill, were good sports with dynamite, Bill the standout short and stocky; I have seen players in tackling go right over Bill's head as he hit low and went under them. The Smaill’s, with Doug the standout, following in the footsteps of his well-known dad, Walter, while Bruce was more the student with sport as a Jack and Art, were opposites with Jack the more rugged of the two.The Crombie’s were another rugged family of athletes, George, followed by Jim and John, better known as Bones. They were all terrific competitors and were in the game every minute they were playing. The Markham's were of different temperaments, both quiet-spoken but Wally the standout, both at school and later at McGill.Space will not permit me to mention all families. The Crite’s boys, Gordon, Doug, George and Jim were all six feet or over and were a great sporting family likewise the Glickman’s Lorrie and Joe, the latter a three-letter man, and one of the best.Heredity’s Part While I am on the subject of families it is a good time to talk about the part I have found heredity seems to play in the makeup of athletes. As a shining example we will take the case of Murray Patrick, son of the well- known Lester, When Murray came to the school he was 17 years old and had not been on skates for a number of years. After playing standout football and basketball he came out with the hockey squad. At the- first practice he was like a person who had never been on skates before. At that time the rule caleld.for pa to declare six boys as seniors cut Nl before the first league ‘game, and they could not be used on the B team. When I sent Murray's name in as one of the six I received my first criticism from you must have known his father.” My answer was, “Yes, and I knew him as one of the best hockey players of his day or any other.” In the middle of the season Murray was a standout, at the end he was an all star, the next season he played on New York Rovers, then the following season on the Phil.Ramblers; .and before the season was over, he moved up to the Rangers.Doug Smaill, like Murray, was a natural with heredity playing its art.The distaff side of the family often showed its influence when I would wonder why certain boys developed so quickly and in inquiring the maiden name of their mother I would find she was the sister or a close relative of some of the older great athletic families.Jim Macken New B.C.Tennis Champ Jim Macken formerly of West- mount now residing in Vancouver won "the British Columbia tennis singles championship on Saturday.Jim who is a brother of Brendan the Davis Cup player played brilliantly to defeat Jim Skelton in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 and 6-1, Tennis experts on the coast think that Jim Macken was the ‘‘forgotten man” when the Canadian Davis Cup selectors named the 1951 squad.Since moving to Vancouver last year Jim has cleaned up most of the major tennis trophies in B.C.Blaze On Boulevard Started By Torches The Westmount Fire Department responded to a call Monday when a house under construction on The Boulevard took fire, The authorities said the blaze was caused by the neglectful use of welding torches by the workers. The heat from the torches started a fire in the walls and attic. One stream was used to combat the blaze and damage was slight.Brig.Del alanne .(Continued from Page 1) 3.First Aid and Stretcher Bearing, 6 periods.“ € Identification and Orientation of points in devastated areas: À periods.d) Post-disaster Operational Responsibilities of Wardens: 1.Reporting, 4 periods: a) Casualties.b) Fires.c) Extent and type of damage.2.Liaison and Assistance to other sections: 2 periods: e) Recapitulation, 1 period.Morgan Realties Limited Real Estate Brokers 1455 UNION AVE.HA.0251 Ladies’ & Gentlemen's SUITS HAND-TAILORED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU Our Newest Imported Materials Are Worth Seeing Call and See Mr.Davies who will Give you his Personal Attention PICCADILLY VALET SERVICE 154 ABBOTT AVE, wi.3205 (Just below St.Catherine) the principal, who said,.“Huh, Fu Fins Satur was | Wray) stree and drow from East.Mont ball While Cana he wi strok Antw Ba the N won Leag! was 1922, the fi and Sprin ance years At was ~ the R serve after lay w Huds Memb Memb Club : forme daugt a bro Te Ee AA FF oe EEA = 1 & COMPANY Free Estimates WESTMOUNT ion Fir day Died In Accidental Fall From Yacht Funeral services for Gordon E.Findlay, 53, who died accidentally Saturday, of 4180 Kensington Ave.was held Wednesday in the Jos.C.Wray & Bro.chape}, Mountain street.A prominent insurance broker and sportsman, Mr.Findlay drowned when he fell overboard from his yacht at St.Andrew's East.: He was born and educated in Montreal and was a former football and swimming champion. While overseas in 1917 with the Canadian Corps, Second Division, he won the Canadian Corps breast stroke swimming championship at Antwerp.Back in Canada, he played on the M.A.A.A.football team which won the Inter-Provincial Football League championship in 1919.He was ‘a member of the team until 1922, Mr.Findlay joined his father in the fire insurance business in 1920 and became manager of the Springfiéld Group of Fire Insurance Companies, He retired two years ago, At the start of the last war he was a company commander with - the Royal Montreal Regiment, Re- gerve Battalion, but retired soon Afterwards. An ardent yachtsman, Mr.Find- lay was a past commodore of the Hudson Yacht Club.He was & life member of the M.A.A.A.and a nember of the Whitclock Golf lub and the United Services Club.He is survived by his wife, the former Greeba Williamson; general opinion that the two Westmount Intermediate League teams to fight for the 1951 championship would be the defending champs, the Ave.Stars and the year's “mystery” team, the R.Y.P.S.In a game played on Monday night, Aug.13, the Aladdins,Ÿ spurred on by Bob ‘‘Hey-no-eh ?"” Lunny roared into a‘'big 15-8 lead and in the seventh inning it seemed nothing could halt their onward sweep, when the disgruntled RYPS took on fire and began hitting relief pitcher Con Forey to their satisfaction and to the amount of ten runs, (four in the 7th, the rest in the 8th, Cliff Gill relieving Al Locke of the R YPS in the hurling dept.in the same frame) and were thus leading when the city street lights blinked on and the umpire did not call the game? From the above hodge-podge of facts all we can ascertain is that the Recreation Supervisor for the city of Westmount, Hugh Strat- ton, and the President of the League, Mr.H.E.Wellein, will hand down their decision in time for either the Aladdins to replay the abovementioned game with the RYPS or for the Avenue Stars to begin their three-out-of-five final series with the RYPS.Whichever the outcome, the final play downs promise to be very close indeed and should be well worth watching. The RYPS defeated the Aladins on Wednesday night by a score of 18-7.Cliff Gill went all the way for the victors while the pitching chores for the “Doins were evenly divided between Lunny and Forey.A protest was entered by Ernie Bolduc of the Westmount Corporation in Yards team about the Monday battle versus Ave.Stars in which unsatisfactory umpiring was said to be the crux of the matter. This protest was upheld and the game which the Stars won 12-7 was replayed Wednesday, the Avenues winning again 8-4 also winning the semi-final series two games to nothing. The winning pitcher in both games was Mike Barnard.Bartlett and Van Rysyuck shared the loser accolade.‘A.S.C.as the last time these teams met, the Mounties suffered their first setback of the season, and have vowed to atone for that defeat, but with the brand of ball displayed by the R.C.A.S.C.in their last four games it will take some doing, as the Service Corps, after a bad start have won three out of the last four, and the loss was only by one run.The stand ing at Aug.16th.is as follows.W.L.Pts.RCMP.0++++0+000000 T7 2 14 RMR.cevevirncesasss 6
