the congregation grew in numbers and strength, and in 1817 the congregation having become too large for the building on St.Sulpice St., decided to erect a larger church; so the first “St.James" church was built on the corner of St.Francis Xavier and St.James streets and was opened in 1821.The years passed.Another building was erected in 1844 on the site now occupied by the Bank of Commerce on St.James St, Its seating capacity was 2,000 and was insufficient at times to accommodate all who -wished to .attend.But conditions were changing; population was moving, and in about 40 years movement of population to the north and west of the city became so great that the St.James congregation decided to move with the people. After long and careful consideration the present site of St.James was purchased from the Canadian Pacific Railway for the sum of $70,000.Plans were made and the cornerstone of the present church was laid on June 11, 1887.Many notables, both lay and cleric, were present on that occasion. The corner-stone was laid by Hon.James Ferrier.‘The present building was then erected and was opened for public worship in June, 1889.It was considered to be the largest and most beautiful Methodist Church in Canada and one of the noblest in world Methodism. Many have been the great preachers and orators who have occupied this pulpit. In 1925 St.James became part of the United Church of Canada and has played a prominent part in the church life of Montreal all through her history.Because of financial difficulties it was decided to erect commercial buildings around the front entrance. While this has been a great loss in that it hides the beauty of the massive towers, yet it was necessary to sustain the church and her work.Great changes have come as the years have gone; changes in residence, of the population have again affected this old: - congregation.thedamilleh who were th strength and igtay of St.James \\ a few years ago are now living in the newer residential areas, and ly erected have as their strength and stay people whose roots in the Christian faith were planted in old St.James.In a recent call from the Finance and Extension Board of the Montreal Presbytery, St.James contributed $100,000 to help finance the building of new churches in Greater Montreal.- The present minister of this historic congregation was born on a farm in Bruce Co., Ontario, and after public school there, and while still very young, went to Vancou- r ver, B.C., where matriculation was completed. Then, for four and one half years in the Navy, after discharge in Halifax, N.S., was received as a candidate for the ministry in 1919, attended Mt.Alison University and was ordained in Parrsboro, N.S., in June 1923.His first charge after ordination was in Nappan, N.S.then after ChurchUnion was called to Ayles- ford, N.S., in the beautiful Annapolis Valley.Following this happy pastorate a call came from old Annapolis Royal and a more wonderful spot for good living would be difficult to find. From Annapolis Royal a call came from the mining centré of Stellarton, N.S., from which pastorate many happy memories still linger.During the war, while serving as part- time Chaplain with the armed forces, a call came from the great congregation of Trinity United Church in Charlottetown, P.E.L No Maritime ministry could ever be fully complete without an Island pastorate — a great people filled with kindness and good-will.From there the call came to St.James, where so much is different and more demanding.= Next ton many of the churches more recent- | - Beauty Shop in Montreal, 342-A Vic- HE.5129.N-12 orin, “WA.6687 — Also an exclusive 34 HELP WANTED Boarding Kennel catering to a limited number only.hone e.Anne de FEMALE Bellevue 2134.N-§ JUNIOR SECRETARY |# PERSONALS Lawyer requires junior secretary, re- LAMPSHADES Recovering lampshades, at very reas sonable price. For information call GL.3231.N-%1 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS GROUPS For particulars, P.O.Box 213, Wednesday Westmount Station L, Westmount, Sunday afternoon Thursday West End TRADES AND PROFESSIONAL CARDS 20 WORDS &5c ADDITIONAL WORDS 3c EACH CARPENTRY S.STANDRING — General carpentry and cabinet-making.Expert craftsmanship on all lines of woodwork.Planned kitchens and custom built interiors a specialty, Estimates free, Satisfaction guaranteed.EL.7458, CARTAGE — MOVING GENERAL TRANSPORT—Local and lo distance.Specialty: furniture, .pianos, refrigerators.Call FI.1328, EDUCATIONAL FRENCH CONVERSATION, Paris, Montreal universities graduate, former McGill professor, private small groups.3479 Prud’homme, near Sherbrooke, DE.2290.N-8 UPHOLSTERING CHESTERFIELD sets recovered, reconverted to modern styles. For free estimation call WA.5582.Mid-Town Uphotstering Co., 5337 Western Ave.VENETIAN BLINDS VENETIAN BLINDS — Flexalum spring tempered slats, Vinyl plastic tapes.Newest and best on the market. No installation charge.Steel drapery supports given free of charge.Call tor free estimate, J.P.Beaudoin, veteran.OXFORD VENETIAN BLINDS REG'D.YO.5681.EVENINGS, HE.0581, NT STMOU NT GARAGE LX } Operated By e d European 244: Victoria XT 1d) echanical repairs ars.tati Ee ian ES ms, 2% Vans Toe TEER AT ve pe ri J PAGE EIGHT THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1951 = + Socia + + Personal + + Engagements = + Mrs.H.W., Emo, of Westmount, has been in New York recently, the guest of Mrs.Charles Jones of Norton, Virginia.Rev.and Mrs.F.H.Brewin, of Cobourg, Ont, and Mr.and Mrs.J.A.C.Colvil, of Farnham, Que., were among the guests at the Vivian-Thackray wedding on Saturday. The Rev.Mr.Brewin, the | bridegroom's grandfather, assisted | Canon Oliver in officiating.cae lj J WESTERN |! American Revolution then came to Canada as Loyalists.Pioneer businessmen of Montreal drove in brickboards over a lume berjack’s road to see the legendary Shawinigan Falls and so founded the great power and chemical industries of La Mauricie. An habitant boy became one of the last of the coureurs de bois and turned his love of the wilderness into a driving force that helped to turn four thousand square miles of wilderness into the Laurentides Park and the greatest natural trout - fishing preserve in the world. These are the sort of persons who imprinted on Quebec its infinite variety and its traditional culture. Our old Province has a curious duality that makes it a fascinating travel country for while it clings proudly to its antiquities of place and custom, it is at the same time in the very forefront of revolutionary industrial adventures in power and mining. Its amazing natural wealth in power, minerals and timber, and the industrial skills of its versatile and thrifty people, have created riches far beyond those of- the fabled Cathay which drew the European discoverers up the St.Lawrence in search of the land of the Great Khan.Blodwen Davies was born in Montreal and spent her childhood in the old Seigneurial Town of Longueuil. Many of her friends bore the names of old French pioneer families. Her father was _| a well-knôwn water sportsman and spent all his leisure sailing The final score, 21-0.It was gratifying indeed to see the response to our plea of last week that more adults should take a little time out to watch these games. We noticed a large number of parents and friends of the - players present this week.Let's see a lot more out for the all-im- portant tussle next Wednesday versus McGee; starting time will be 3.30 SHARP.Allan Sandelius park every chance they have to boost their already top-notch physical condition and their various, deceptive and otherwise, plays. The WHS Sr.usual against tough and haven't yet managed to hit the win eolumn as they've drawn with Lachine 1-1 and lost to Baron Byng 4-0 and Rosemount High 3-1 with last Wednesday's game with Loyola postponed till yesterday.More details next week.Getting back to the doings of the rugbyites, their loss by & score of 16-0 to West Hill the week previous must have sparked them to glorious heights in this Wednesday's “game’” with Montreal High as they took the boys in blue to the cleaners 21-0 with what looked to be comparative ease, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter and one each in the last two stanzas, plus a second quarter convert." Undoubtedly the individual star of this game was Charlie Baillie, team captain, who, with his good blocking, plunging, passing and tackling helped to set up not only his own but the other three majors 38 well. The game opened with Westmount receiving the ball on their twenty yard line.and running it tg the forty. From there it was easy going for Baillie and" Dave MacAulay, who did most of the ball-carrying at the time, to move the pigskin upfield to -the Montreal two yard stripe. There quarterback Tony Skinner tried a quarter sneak which went awry when after he had been pushed back from over the line, the ball was fumbled and Montreal recovered to force the play to see-saw for the remainder of the period, Westmount obviously having = healthy territorial edge. The second quarter found the Westies opening up their full attacking power as they rolled to an easy T.D.in less than one minute of play, MacAulay going over standing up on a wide sweep around the right end.Baillie's first attempt at the convert went.wide but an offside penalty against HSM enabled him to improve his aim for the point! Some very swift running on the part of Gerry Apostolatos, Hank Matthews, Baillie and MacAulay once more put WHS in a scoring position near the close of the first half culminating in Matthews’ off-tackle plunge from the five yard line for the touchdown.Baillie’s convert | attempt was blocked.A try by Westmount to take | “A” soccer eleven have been battling away as opposition # possession of the ball on the opening kick-off of the second half by kicking a short dribbler within reach of the onside Westmen, resulted, however, in having to kick again five yards back, which they did, stopping the Montreal ball- carrier on his own forty-five.It ‘didn’t take too long before the Blue and White attack was stopped in its tracks and the locals started to roll from their forty to a T.D.scored through the center of the opposing line by Baillie.Again the convert was missed. At long last the fourth and final quarter arrived with Westmount beginning another downfield march featuring spectacular sprinting by Apostolatos, Matthews, MacAulay, Baillie, Skinner, Eddie Kalil and Jack Perry. On one play, Perry was supposed to © Limited ‘Enrolment BOYS and GIRLS SWIMMING INSTRUCTION We are now able to offer courses in swimming instruction similar to our Springtime Learn-to-Swim classes.Boys and girls from & to 9 years of age will be admitted ® Courses start in November For complete details, coll WESTMOUNT Y.M.C.A.4585 Sherbrooke Street West Phone: GL.3916 aeroplane builders are cordially | invited to attend these meetings.Football All Junior boys are reminded | of the touch football games held in Westmount Park on Wednesday | at 4 o'clock and Saturday at 9; o'clock.Intermediate games are held on Tuesday at 4 o'clock and Saturday | at 10 o'clock. In case of rain gym period will be held in the gymnasium.Swim Instruction i Swim instruction is held oni Tuesday afternoons.Beginners’ classes at 4 o'clock! PAGE TWENTY CLIO teams.Mr.coach, - .‘The early season of 1918 is one | I would like to forget. It was then the world went through the ter- which all the schools, churches, theatres and hospitals were closed for over six weeks, wherein you would meet a friend on the street and the next day hear of his death. The younger generation of today cannot conceive the horror of those days, with a daily death rate of over 200, young and old.The roads leading to the cemeteries were crowded with all types of vehicles.transporting the dead.Owing to its virulence immediate burial was necessary and no fu- meral service was permitted. The schools all opened at the .= Usual time and our teams started “their season and were leading in all series when the order came to close up all activities in and outdoor. It was a hard biow to take as our prospects of winning all titles were the best we had in years; nevertheless the order was obeyed. The senior team had in its lineup the following boys, K.Falconer, B.Tyler, H.Emo, J.Glick- man, N.Wallace, H.Campbell, P.Gnaedinger, M.Mitchell, H.Kers- ley, E.Hoffman, G.Webster, J.Plow, L.Kent, G.Chisholm, L.45 Glickman and C.Munro.These id.boys were graduates of the pre- 5 vious years’ championship inter- ' mediate and junior teams. The 4.value of their intensive funda- i mental training of the previous È a : .year was clearly® shown in their an ; play on the senior team, before Ë the games were abruptly stopped." ; When the schools were re- « ! opened it was too late for basketball and we started our hockey practice in the old Arena that stood on the corner of Wood and St.Catherine Street and which later was completely destroyed by fire, with the loss of all the hockey equipment of the teams using the rink. The senior team (seven men) had in its lineup the following: Hubert Kersley, who played a standout game in goal while the defense was composed of Hal.“Emo, a hard rushing type of player and with him E.McNider, not as spectacular but effective.Up forward as rover was Len Kent {now doctor). In front of hifh on the forward line Kenny Barlow, ’ B.Ewing and Larry Glickman, the latter now a big shot in Hollywood, performed well.In those days it was the old onside game and stickhandling was a feature of the game. The sticks used were very short and the puck was played in close to the skates. It was later when they increased the length of the sticks which made it more difficult for good stickhandling.Lost For Something An incident that happened then would be considered strange today. Two of our best players were Seen smoking on the street after : school. The master who observed ‘ | it reported it to the principal and | both boys were suspended for two games and no amount of appeal t could alter the decisiôn.Needless 10} to say we lost the two games and the title. The master who did the ; Ç reporting had a pretty tough time [ A at the school following the in- 3 cident.hi The football teams of 1919 had “ ; & number of boys in their lineup who later were outstanding on the McGill Intercollegiate teams, - © among them the late Dr.Bobby Bell, famous coach of the Red Men “ key teams; Herby Murphy, bi “Boyd Millen, Monroe Abinovitch, .the well known lawyer of today.[(A funny story about Monroe, Var- Bity had à wonderful boxer named hd Less Black, and in the draw Mon- £00 drew him for his opponent in fhe Intercollegiate Boxing Cham- plonship.Less had a weakness of .ves pine Bele .rime By G.P.SMITH A series of articles by a retired coach and physical director recalling great nthlietes and great Smith was 32 years” of Westmount High as director of physical education (boys), and concurrently 28 years at McGill as wrestling rible Spanish ‘flu epidemic during: ‘one half of which was occupied continually blinking his eyes.Monroe had it all figured to sock him when he closed his eyes.Unfortunately he couldn't time it right.Nevertheless Monroe was the only man to go the distance with Less, either in Canadian or American college bouts.) At quarter we had a talky little guy, Howard Hyman. In one game I had to dig the mud out of Howard's mouth after he was buried under a mass of players in inches of mud and water in a play-off game on the M.A.A.Aground, which we won, giving us the title.Other members were Bill Wright, a half and a good one; Donnie Black, a very quiet type; Ralph Cummings, one of the best defensive players ever to attend the school; Jim Dixon, Lanky Trevor Kerr; C.Weldon, Fran, Winters, G.Garbi, Reg.Cowan and R.Pollock from Winnipeg, and Hartland McKeown. The intermediates and juniors did not win their titles but provided good opposition in all games. In basketball the seniors had a very good team with Hughy Campbell at centre; Lionel Parker (well known M.A.A.A.) and Oxly Pitt, on the forward line, with Bert Tyler as alternate. As Guards, George Wren and that great piece of stuff, Joe Glick- man, one of the most popular boys in the school.I used to enjoy a lot of boxing with Joe and other big boys in the senior grades.Saved Operation ; I had been bothered for years with a block in the bone formation in one of my nostrils, an old momenta of a tough wrestling match wherein I had it fractured. While boxing with one of the bigger boys I received two solid punches on the nose and I noticed my breathing cleared immediately.I stopped and shook hands with him and thanked him for the operation as his two punches had-put the bone back in place and I haven't had any trouble with it since. In hockey with a strong nu- cleous from the previous years championship intermediates we were able to ice a very strong team that went on to win the title. In the goals we had the most unodthodox goaler in Jack Mackay. He used only his stick for practically every type of shot.On defence we had Joe Glickman and Jack Emo, a very powerfull pair, up forward Russ McKee, H.Hyman, Ralph Whittal, the latter an outstanding skiier as well.Adrian Perram and the late Dr.Bobby Bell filled in capably. The juniors won their title and had in their lineup a number of future greats who later were members of the great 23-24 team, that played in the semi-final for the Memorial Cup.The games that year were played in the old Vic rink on Drummond Street and in one game a free for all was staged, Joe Glickman was penalized for a minor infraction, and as he was climbing into the penalty bench, by the opposing team and a large crowd of their adult supporters, he was met by a punch in the nose from one of the men supporters.I never crossed any ice faster than I did from our side of the rink.I guess I went beserk for a few minutes and then cooler heads prevailed and it was soon over.We won the game.Joe was one of the manliest boys ever to play for the school and one of the cleanest of players in all sports.A few years later a similar incident happened at the Mount Royal Arena with Jimmy Thomson the victim of the attack while lying on the ice and this man hit him while seemingly helping to break up the row.Fortunately he was | in arms reach and it ended there: THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, CETOBER 19, 1951 slate qf of "Y" Notes.(Continued from Page 19) ning the Club’s membership policy waa explained, and a nominating Under th committee will bring in a proposed presentation, season within the next month, ficers for the coming, November 2, and on every Friday throughout the year.Mr.Ges hag Film Club stated that the programs will be e chairmanship of Ron| as interesting as possible, and will Gee, the Film Club is finalizing include unusual Hollywood re plans for the coming season.A| leases, educational films, and varied program will be ready for| filma of general entertainment starting Friday, value, Self Storing!
