defence that we have undertaken might have to be continued for a generation or more, we might ask ourselves whether we can do this and add to it our soéial program without being ready to sacrifice something of our present way of life.If we are satisfied with our abilities in these regards we are entitled to go ahead.Comparisons are not always ccrrect hut they are generally instructive. In 1939, before we had undertaken large commitments for war, our spending on social measures cost us about $8.50 per head of population or a little more than $86 million. In the current year it is estimated that federal spending on various welfare measures will ap- income.“meme 1 » THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1952 proximate $1,042 million or something more than $75 per head of our materially larger population, Approximately $100 million are for pensions and other benefits resulting from the last war. But, eliminating this as a charge we are still spending eleven times as much on welfare projects as we spent in Are we that much better off?It hardly seems so.Our net national income in 1949, the last year of complete record, was $12,917 million. That is about three times the $4,- 289 millions of net national income in 1939.They were different dollars too, so we aren’t quite as well off as this would make us appear. But though our welfare spending was sharply less than we propose to spend this year it was rapidly creeping up and has continued to climb, so that this year it will amount to about one twelfth of our national Now we have hardly begun on our defence program and that will add up to much more than our welfare program.Of course we are told that we will have to expect heavier taxation. We would be happier about this if we were starting say from the basis of 1939 figures. Then corporation and individual income taxes brought in $145 million and the sales tax and other imposts were relatively modest. But in 1950 personal and corporation income taxes brought in £1,221 million.Thal, though better than eight times as much, provided only enough to look after our welfare program for this year.Of course we have added to these taxes since then, and we are proposing other taxes. But we wonder if there will be enougn to provide for everything and, if not, which will we give up first.the guns or the butter?—J.L-R.+ : + | St.Andrew's-Westmount | Sunday Dining Room. With Doreen Day as commentator, the “feminine” theme was evident in every detall of the showing.7 The first important sign of the times pointed out by Mrs.Day.was in the housecoats, New York originals by Jean Dessés.Whereas in former years it was considered improper to appear beyond the bedroom door in a dressing gown, the present elaborate styles are dêliberately designed to be seen and approved.Fabrics are crisp and often sheer, and sleeves and skirts are fuller than ever.Other high spots of '52 are patent leather accessories; high, fitted waistline; crinoline skirts under everything from formals to tweed suits; and, at long last, the reappearance of knitted suits.A colorful interlude was provided by the modelling of a mother's, father's, and child's typical outfit before the turn of the century, and of a bride's gown in 1907.For contrast, this was followed by a 1952 wedding style.Of the originals, special enthusiasm was shown for an apricot shantung tweed daytime suit by Dior, with the fashionable knee- high pleats; and an “Enchanted Evening” gown by Digby Morton, in three shades of grey net, with irridescent embroidery and taffeta pouff. To add the last word in elegance to the show, a half dozen Paris hats were modeled, and were surprisingly demure and uncomplicated.Light refreshments were served at the conclusion of the revue, the tables being decorated with var- iagated spring flowers.Miss Florence Ewing is Hospitality Chairman, Mrs.J.C.McKean, president of the club, introduced Mrs.Doreen CI I a mas Day.Maritime ago as a gourmet’s fad, has developed into a nationally popular eating habit. This latest companion to our daily bread is yogurt, national food of Bulgaria, and now being thoroughly expounded in our own country.Says Professor Assen Todorqff Kantardjieff, former director of the Institute of Dairy Bacteriology at University of Sofia: “In all hospitals of Bulgaria, yogurt is part of the regular daily diet.Prof.Kantardjietf, who makes his own cultures in Montreal, says “consumption is mounting all the time.We hope to see people in Montreal eat 10,000 jars a day before long.” Yogurt is a milk preparation infected with a special bacillus that the Bulgarians believe responsible for the fact that it's not uncommon for men to live to the age of 110 in their country.Dr.A.Donoff, a 42-year-old Bulgarian doctor who.operates the Montreal north factory of Vita- Yogurt Products, says that Illia Metchnikoff, the great Russian biologist, first spotted the value of yogurt in keeping Bulgarians hale and hearty.| Here, it is very commonly eaten as is, in six-ounce portions. However, Montreal housewives, adapting this new food to standard Cishes, are using it as a salad dressing, or as a topping for jelly, fruit, etc.Dessert Luncheon The monthly dessert luncheon meeting of the Laurentian Service Organization will be held at the home of Mrs.Munroe Leopold,
