What happens when the newly elected members arrive at the House of Commons? They hope to shine in the field of politics. There are times when genius finds a way but to this group we give little and expect much. What do we do for the members when they are elected ?Nothing! They are simply thrown into the House of Commons, left to the mercy of the Goddess of Luck. The party owes everything to the active members ~ they should have more help.Consider the new member. The chances are that he was not born to the job, few are.The task is new to him.He has much to learn, He must now confront men of wide experience. He is not, as a general rule, a student of political affairs.Everything is new to him, He is faced with many problems, he moves in a maze, What is being done to start him on the right road? The work of parliament does not consist solely of speeches, delivered in the House. These are often the dried bones of past political efforts. The work of the committees is often more important than the work in the Chamber. It takes real effort to bring out the facts, to examine an issue as it ought to new member to ask questions if, for no other reason than to get acquainted with the sound of his own voice when heard at a public meeting, - Every effort of this kind when strictly party questions are under discussion will, of course, be confined to the separate parties but there should be in the early weeks “THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1952 of a new parliament, an opportunity to discuss in camera, the policies of the various parties including that of the government party. It is only in this way that the policies of the different parties can be examined, explained, bravely defended or seriously attacked.PAGE SEVEN 1t is essential also that each individual member should study and know intimately the policies of the opposing parties as well as the policies of his own.The more he knows on this subject the stronger will be his position in either attack or defence. The young member ought to be able to answer off-hand every criticism against the party to which he belongs. If he knows the weaknesses of the opposing party he will be better able to attack and remember — the attack is almost always the best defence, Tel.EL.0511 EL.3149 FREE CUSTOM SERVICE Your favourite color will be mixed for you quickly, easily, correctly .No muss, no fuss, no bother.we do all the work.Any Color Made Up Exclusively for You Bring us a sample, be it draperies, rugs, lamp shades, etc.we'll match it.ABSOLUTELY FREE.The CANADA, PAI NT@ 4883 Sherbrooke St.West (Near Prince Albert) COLOR ca ran Nae be examined. The new member will want to be on the committee which deals with the subjects in which he is particularly interested. The methods followed in committee are often quite free and informal. They constitute a first class training 4 ground for the new members. The qualities needed are the possession | of a broad intelligence, a questing : mind.Naturally enough, for the ! committees, members are chosen i from different sides, there will be 3 a wide divergence of opinion. Some’ members will have a certain amount of misinformation. The informed members, the ones who know the field, are invaluable. There is abundant material on which the new member can feed. There will be those who have the capacity to use it.The committee moves forward gradually by the ! synthesis of divergent opinions.Above all the new member must retain an open mind. The capacity to analyse, the ability to form reasonable conclusions based on facts is of vital importance for any M.P.When this is natural® thed member speaks with assurance and conviction.- oak SERENE FPL ir You'll find him about 20 years of age .fully trained and full of the zest for flying … keen …; ‘1 went air crew because, more than anything alert.brimful with a sense of accomplishment else, | wanted fo fly — and I felt I'd gef more rs flying and experience in the Air Force.Jets?, .yes, they're easier fo fly .Sorry, 1 can't describe the feeling to you, but there's just nothing like being up there .35,000 and responsibility! manufacturing industries will spend more than one billion dollars in new construction and equipment.Canadians may well take pride in the fact that their enter- -prise and energy, to which this remarkable investment bears witness, are thus creating great new opportunities and are playing their part in raising the standards of living, not only at home, but in all the free nations of the world.” .The words are those of Mr.G.K.Sheils, C.M.G., the president of the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association, and they were said about a month ago at a Canadian National Exhibition directors’ luncheon.Certainly, a billion dollars in expansion js a lot of money, but Canadian industrialists are not the only people who are aware that betting on Canada is not like betting on a long shot.Let us quote further from Mr.Sheil’s speech on this subject.“Not all of the capital which will be expended this year in the expansion of Canada’s industrial economy will come from the pockets of Canadian investors. On the contrary there is every reason to believe that the influx of foreign capital, which, over the last two’ years, represented approximately 15 per cent of our aggregate capital expenditure during that period, will not only be continued, but will be accelerated.“In this connection, I am sure many of you read with interest, as I did, the report in the August 16th issue of the Financial Post of the talk given by Mr.James H.R.Cromwell at a Colgate University Conference.on ‘Investment and American Foreign Policy,’ in which the former U.S.Ambassador to Canada set out certain fundamental reasons why investment ih Canada was more desirable, from the point of view of the United States citizen, than in any other country in the world, not even excluding their own.As the basic facts so clearly stated by Mr.Cromwell become better appreciated by more of his fellowcountrymen, and provided, of course, we in Canada can maintain intact the first three assets which he places to our credit in his ledger, namely political stability, economic stability and a proper governmental and national attitude towards business, there would seem to be little doubt that more and more U.S.funds will be seeking profitable investment in our country.“And, let us not be afraid to take advantage of the opportunities, and to accept the responsibilities, which accompany these foreign investment funds.Let us not hearken to the timid soul who whispers in lugubrious tones that we are selling our birthright.to the United States, or to any other country.Point out to him instead, that if the net foreign investment from all sources in Canada were to be considered as a mortgage on our national wealth, that mortgage has decreased, during the past generation, from 19.2 per cent of Canada’s wealth to less than 5 per cent of that wealth today, and this despite the heavy capital inflow of the past two years which I mentioned a moment ago.” We think that the speaker proved one point definitely: Canada is certainly the brightest of the world's blue chips today.Or maybe gilt-edged would be a better way of describing this country of ours.THE EXAMINER, WESTMOUNT, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1952 - Come to Church Your Church is the Bulwark of Democracy, There Does Freedoin Flourish.Attend the Church of Your Choice Regularly.+ Ï to do with your home and its furnishings when you're away for the winter, here are some considerations.Leave the blinds drawn if possible. This will protect rugs, wallpaper, draperies and fabrics from sun.And naturally yeu'll carefully close and lock all windows to keep out prowlers as well as dust and rain.Dust a tremendous, rays. The surface will blister and crack if exposed to direct hot sun.Where heavy pieces of furniture leave the impression of their feel on your carpets, move them.Help the pile to stand upright by applying a steam iron on the spots, then give those spots a complete rest while you're away resting.Cleanliness is important in an empty house. We realize you've just finished housecleaning so all will be clean.Maybe some drawers and cupboards could be re-done and your favorite patterned wallpaper used to line drawers and shelves, This helps to keep the moths away.Remember what a thrill it is to come home to a clean kitchen?Change the shelf paper and drawer linings
