Baha'i children have been forced out of schools, and religious leaders in one community have ordered Rutchers and bakers mot to sell meat or bread to the Baha'is.— In many places the local governors and police have openly assisted and encouraged the atrocities. The Baha'i Faith which stresses in its teachings the unity and onehess of mankind has been accused of subversion and atheism. The Faith, based on the teachings of the prophet Baha'u'llah was founded in 1844 and is now represented throughout the world and in over 100 Canadiun centres.Baha'u'llah taught that the spiritual messages of all, the divine messengers Moses, Christ, Mohhamad were essentially the same in spirit and that on this basis the world could become united.Ghandi once dd it was his purpose to unite ie and Bahg' ullah’s to unite the world. It is difficult to believe that people in the 20th century are still being persecuted in some parts of the world for their + (Continued on Page 2) religious beliefs.Ey È ‘ rt ga rare fu es _-——., ia a ed aboard the S.S.-Shxonia, while a pe gi an Pi Ege ted Ta .PC RT AS FRR RL ars TS ER ome an Let ae ne a ii REE Celie 2eme ane ne ae EE AE TAN SII Ya TES ne va 7 = : : ; of office for the Mayor and Aldermen ds 2 years. Some members of Council have been able to devote themselves to civic affairs by serving several terms.Continuity is of vital importance.Major changes or sweeps are not desirable. It has been said that serling on the Council is one -of the most difficult and time-consuming jobs that a citizen can undextake, and besides you live with the people you govern.Changes in Mayors and Aldermen are inévitable and it is incumbent on the City Manager to provide continuity, and to inform new members of Council as quickly and thoroughly as possible on ali phases of City vice records of, Mayors, Aldermen and City Managers, it is comforting and satisfying to feel that the citizens of Westmount are generally apprectative of the Coun- cil-Manager Form of of multiple services, diverse Departments and individuals. In Westmount we believe that we \\are most definitely in the top bracket in those fields.Council, Manager, Department Heads, Supervisors, two-thirds of Canada’s population increase took place in the 35 chief urban areas of the country, says the current Monthly Review of The Bapk of Nova Scotia, which deals with the trend to bigger cities and some of the | reasons for it.Between 1941 and 1951 the combined suburban parts of the eight largest cities grew by 67%.Of the 51 incorporated placed that entered the 5,000 and over group during the decade, 19 were parts of metropolitan areas of 100,000 and over.In fact, by 1951 about one-third of the entire Canadian population was living in metropolitan areas of this size, and around 45% of it in urban aggreations of 40,000 or more.Canada’s growth, the Review observes, is generally thought of in terms of the development of natural resources. And, indeed, in the surges of expansion that have marked her history, activity on LD Aull FUNCRAL HOM ¢ 5610 Sherbrooke St W, DExver 1149 Complately i AIR CONDITIONED = Funeral Home ond Chapel Be doi active funeral Se + (2 aN eit numbers beside the growth in the great metropolitan centres.Discussing the reasons for this | growth, the Review notes that resource development and high levels of agriculture income have stimulated the capital goods industries.Export demand for such highly processed materials ag aluminum and nickel has been extraordinarily strong.High em- ploymepfy has meant a heavy demand for consumer durable goods and fabricated building materials as well as for the everyday necessities of life. The consequent increase ih manufacturing capacity has played a major role in the growth of the industrial cities of Ontario and Quebec. The advantage of location that account for the extraordinary concentration of Canadian manufacturing in the cities of southern Ontario and the St.Lawrence {Valley has continued to operate as in the past. The big market provided by a densely populated area, and proximity to a pool of skilled labour and to suppliers of parts and - materials are compelling attractions — witness the snowballing growth of Montreal and Toronto.Cheap water transportation and good rail and road connections are further factors and have been especially important to the steel city of
