Education, Oakland, Calif.By Rev.Canon R.K.Naylor Rector, Trinity Memorial Church Education Il This brief article is addressed to parents as citizens of a great country celebrating its eighty-ninth birthday. Our minds naturally turn with the closing of school and the approach of Dominion Day to the questions: What have the schools and the Dominion to say to one another? And also, What do the parents as citizens think and do about it?The answer to the first question is conditioned by the fact that the schools are a provincial affair and will remain so.Some people think it should not be so, but as wise men we shall deal with things as they are and not go after the impossible. But even if the Dominion as a whole does not control the schools nevertheless it has a moral concern in them and expects certain things from them.It expects in every province the best general education that can be had in our modern days.It expects an education which will fit the next generation to take its place and maintain the good name and orestige of our country in a {roubled world. It has a right to look to our schools to provide citizens for life in Church and State, in industry and finance, in law and medicine, in teaching and politics who will in every sense promote the good of our community.Further, it has the right to look to the schcols to train citizens with breadth of vision and understanding, with an appreciation of their dual heritage of religion, language and culture which will enable them to interpret Europe to America and America to Europe. It surely must expect our schools to keep before our pupils the practicalities and the ideals which will produce an upright and a prosperous nation. That applies to the whole Dominion, but we live in Quebec, a province with its own peculiarities and problems and even it: own provincial holiday. It is very interesting that Quebec— which came out of France does not observe the French national holiday, July 14, but its own private holiday, June 24.For Quebec did not pass through the French revolution of 1789, and still thinks of a .pre-revolu- tionary France. It follows then as a matter of course that our Quebec Government exepects certain things of us.They may be summed up in one sentence: that we shall take seriously the French language and history and, especially, try tn sympathize with the national mentality of our fellow-citizens.For we are training our pupils to live understandingly in (his province, There is another side to this questioning. What do you as parents and tax payers expect of the Government of your Dominion and Province? What do you say about governments at the breakfast table before you rush off to your office and the boys rush with equal speed to school? Is it merely abuse of government as such or have you something constructive to say which will give a lead to your son if he becomes a member of Partiament in years to come? There are several things that you have a right to ask.The first is honesty in handling the nation’s finances, to which you have contributed your taxes.Padded payrolls should lead to dismissal, not to cynical laughter. In the second place you have a right to expect absolute fairness both from Dominion and Provincial Governments, They wdninister the country and province not for a party but for the good of the whole, There should x MUMFORD, BA, BD, who was inducted as asssitant minister at REV.ROBERT WW.St.Andrew’s Church, West- mount, last Thursday, and will preach his first sermon this Sunday morning.be no question of a wharf here or a road ‘here because it will provide votes for a member of Parliament in distress. In =the third place Government should use every nieans to promote the unity of the country, not by suppressing one group—English, French, Jew or New Canadian— but by welding them together as one nation. And, lastly, at least as far as this note is concerned, we expect in Parliament dignity and the observance of all the niceties of parliamentary life which have grown up in the last six centuries. You have a right to ask for these things on your national holiday because they provide the setting for your schools and the atmosphere in which your chil dren grow up, the atmosphere without which national teaching will be completely ineffective.» Westmount Baptist Church Interim pastor Dr.A.C.Archibald will speak at both services oh Sunday. His morning topic will be “That First Lord’s Supper”, being followed by the monthly Communion service, At the evening service he will speak on ‘A bad case of the Blues”.The rickert room will be open during the morning service to care for all children under eight years of age.At the midweek service on Wednesday, Dr, Atchi- de x a Plan a sensible program of word recognition.Slow learners should eventually become independent in word recognition, just as other children do.Since they learn mgre slowly, it is important that these skills be developed gradually in keeping with total reading growth.Specifically, slow-learning children may be expected to need more time than % the average in ear-training activities. These should precede and accompany the initial reading from books, and may be necessary for a considerable time thereafter. The ability to hear differences and likenesses in word and letter recognizing differences and likenesses in printed form.It is an important ‘beginning step in word recognition. As the children begin to read from hooks, they must be helped to build a vocabularly of wotds they can recognize at sight.New vocabulaily ‘must be presented and practised in a variety of ways if slow children are to master it.The association of a word with a picture or with an actual object will be an aid to recognition. For this reason, picture dictionaries made by the children, games which involve matching words and pictures, following written directions using objects in the room (Sit on the biggest chair.Find a red book.) are useful, Meaningless repetition of lists of words, a poor practice for any group, cannot be .justified for slow pupils either as a learning aid or as a morale builder. After the children have mastered a considerable nuniber of words which they recognize at sight (this may occur during the primer level or even later), they will probably show readiness for observing parts of words and forming generalizations about them. Thus; if they have learned as sight words cookies, come, cold, and candles, the teacher presents all “these words, the children pronounce them Hsten- ing for the beginning sound, and discover that the letter c has a specific sound. In the same way other familiar sight words are examined for beginning consonant sounds, for rhyming endings, and later for more difficult phonetic parts. It is important for slow-learn- ing cliildren that these three major steps be taken in order and at fhe child's rate of learning: (1) ear-training activities; (2) ear-training activities plus the building of a sight-word vo- cabularly; and (3) ear-training activities, if still needed, plus the continuation of the sight- word vocabularly, plus analyzing words and forming generalizations about sounds (phonics.) Help the children measure their own progress. All children need to feel that they are succeeding with their school work.Slow- learning children, many of whom have known repeated failure, need success®even more.In fact, they need success frequently, and are unable to wait for long periods of time to gain it.The teacher of slow learners will strive, first of all, to plan a reading program at the children's level, and then to devise objective ways of recording progress.Competition and comparisons with more able children can be avoided.Individual graphs and charts on which the children may record daily achievement in their independent seatwork activittes are helpful.A bit of ceremony when a child completes a book — taking it home to share with bald opens a series of four discussion topics; his subject this week being — “How can we Conquer our Worries”, sounds is basic to- the family or reading a favourite story aloud to a younger group at school — marks an important milestone.Setting up group standards for good oral reading, for good independent work when the teacher is busy, or for considerate behaviour in the classroom library, with proper attention given to‘those children who achieve the standards is another means of measuring growth. So too are displays of interesting work done by this up in yela- ton to their reading. The first voluntary interest in reading books from the public library may be quietly praised. Results by testing from time to time measure growth.- The teacher who is gentiinely interested in helping slow-learn- ing children will find tangible ways of making them aware of their progress and giving them pride in achievement. The teacher who would succeed with slow learners needs an extra measure of understanding and patience and interest.Above all, she needs real skill as an instructor. This is a challenge to any teacher.Countless numbers of teachers are accepting the challenge and doing a fine job to help the less able pupils in their classrooms.Tooth decay attacks nine out of ten people and is particularly active among the teen-agers.Adults are more susceptible to gum diseases. To prevent dental caries, brushing the teeth ‘m- mediately after eating will remove the acid-forming food particles that cause decay.UNITARIAN CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH UNITARIAN Sherbrooke St.at Simpson ; and the lion's share of the $15,000 prize money in the Canadian Open Golf Champion- ~~ ship at Beaconsfield Golf Club July 5-8: It is 10 years almost to the day since the regulation 73 holes of Canadian Open play wound up in a tie—and that was at Beacons- field. Before then there had/been four ties in 14 tournaments -spread over 16 years. No tournaments were staged in 1943 or 1944 due to the war.’ It was June 30th—just five days before this year's Canadian Open starts—in 1946 that George Fazio of Los Angeles and Dick Metz of Arkansas, Kansas wound up the regulation 72 holes for the Seagram Gold Cup at Bea- consfield Golf Club tied at 278 to force an 18-hole playoff for the - Championship. That was the day Fazio came xin early with his potential winning score and sat on the club veranda chewing his nails for more than two hours.while Metz and a young guy from Yancouv- er by the name of Stan Leonard traded shot after shot out on the course in an attempt to beat Fazio’s score. When t was all over, Metz had equalled Fazio’s 278 to force a play-off and Leonard wound up with 279 for an automatic third place. The next day Fazio shot an 18- hole 70 to clinch the Seagram Gold Cup, one stroke better than Metz. The Canadian Open has not wound up in a first place playoff since and it hasn’t been back to Beaconsfield since until this year. Before 1946, playoffs were fairly common in the Canadian Open.In 1931 Tommy Armour nosed out Leo Diegel with 138 in a 36-hole playoff. The following year the great Walter Hagen won in the same kind of playoff LEARN TO SWIM A bi-weekly Learn To Swim American rules will be used¥ throughout. The pitchers will hurl from 46 feet, instead of 43; the bases will be 60 feet apart, instead of 55; and the American softball will be used.If the locals do well, and the changes look good, the Snowdon League may discuss adopting the American distances in future, according to vice president Gerry Snyder. For Gibby Wesolowski, of F'BI, and Percy McCracken, of Stein- berg’s, it will be an opportunity to display their pitching wares in familiar circumstances. Both are veterans of world tournament play, McCraken having sparked the Grocers to a 2-2 record in 1952.Wesolowski made numer- Raybestos Schedule The Jineup of exhibition games this weekend between the Snowdon League and world champion over-sweetness.Take one sip of the new Crown & Anchor. After just that one sip you'll want to know why it tastes milder (not bitter), smoother (not sharp), lighter (no?heavy-sweet).And as your pleased glance falls upon the glass, you'll want to know why the bubbles shine so brilliantly in this clear, sparkling brew. Here are the why's.1.Because a new pure yeast strain — imported from Copenhagen — has been introduced into the fermenter to make the beer more | mellow.2.Because the ageing period has been length.ened.3.Because the Molson’s brewmasters have developed just a s//ght variation in the proportions of malt, hops-and other ingredients that go into the brew kettle — and it has made an important difference.4.Because subtle changes — just a few vital minutes—have been made in the timing of the brewing processes.5.Because this new brew is forced through thousands of layers of filtering material to remove any haze and impart a brilliance to the finished product, All slight.all seemingly “"un-world-shaking”—but together these refinements have produced Mdlson’s new Crown & Anchor, a truly sasty lager beer.FERMENTER 8 The new Crown & Anchor was first submitted to a panel of trained beet tasters. These trained testers sipped from an unidentified glass of new Crown & Anchor .then from unidentified glasses of other popular lagers. These trained palates gave the new Crown & Anchor higher marks than any other lager for mildness, smoothness and lightness of taste. And trained eyes gave new Crown & Anchor the highest marks for clarity and brilliance. Then bottles of the new Crown & Anchor and bottles of the next most popular lager — both identified only -by numbers — were left in thousands of homes throughout Quebec.Interviewers called later to get these ordinary consumers’ opinions. Here's what they found .Everywhere, new Crown & Anchor was preferred by a majority of all lager consumers.Like the trained experts, these average consumers preferred Molson's new Crown & Anchor for its mildness, smoothness, lightness of taste 3 » » for its sparkling brilliance and clarity.call for a "CROWN?today!
