the female.Arrange the mating for the 10th and 12th day after the heat commences.Very often a first breeding does not take, and if you are dealing with a pedigreed dog which commands a high stud fee, try to make arrangements for ‘a return service should the first be unsuccessful. The usual period of gestation for a dog lasts from 59 to 63 days.If the female dog has to be wormed or otherwise this way, the cable is cut and each end is tested to see what direction is dead. This procedurs is followed until the trouble is found.Temporary blackouts are usually caused by cable failure or lines ‘The Christian Idea of Education” has just come to hand from Oxford University Press. It consists of papers read and discussion indulged in at Kent School in Connecticut. The writers are Georges Florovskÿ and Alan Paton of South Africa, men who can speak with authority. The most interesting of them all is Wm.G.Pollard, who has been executive director of the Oak Ridge Institute of discussion with an appraisal of American culture and education. After all the two things are inseparable: education is the machinery we use to pass on our culture to the next generation, I am now summarizing this first paper. Our culture has two roots, one in Greece and one in Israel. Those two came together in the early Christian Church. Then the Greek side of the culture was very largely forgotten until it came to light again in that great intellectual movement of the twelfth century which we cail the Renaissance. From that movement springs all our modern scientific knowledge. So much so that an English scholar of the last century could say: “Nothing moves in the modern world which is not Greek in its origin.” That illustrates the fact that the other — the Hebrew — root of our culture is almost entirely forgotten, and with the Hebrew root goes the Christian inheritance.Another great teacher, William Adams Brown, tells of being in a seminar of university professors at which one professor read a paper on ethics in which he stated that modern ethics was based on Greek philosophy and modern science. In BAPTIST WESTMOUNT BAPTIST CHURCH Sherbrooke Street years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her.Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.” Correlative passages to be read from “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures’ by Mary Baker Eddy include the foliowing (142:31): “Truth is God's remedy for error of every kind.and Truth destroys only What is intrue.Hence the fact that, to-day, as Yesterday, Christ casts out evils and heals the sick.” the discussion Brown remarked: “I think you forgot one thing in your ethics.” The lecturer bristled up and said: “What was that?” “Christianity,” said Brown.“Great Scott,” said the lecturer; “I forgot all about that.” That is characteristic of a great deal of modern American education, if the reports one hears are true.Walter Lippmann, for example, said many years ago that modern western education was tearing modern western civilization to pieces because it had left God out.You may ask why I should speak so in the Province of Quebec where we have religious education in our schools.Yes, we can be very thankful that we have both worship and instrue- tion, but it is still true that we are under the very strong influence of American education. We have a religious culture to guard against a secular education.UNITARIAN CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH UNITARIAN Sherbrooke St.at Simpson Sunday, October 6th - Sermon Subject: “DATED they have no thinking apparatus.Perhaps that is so; but they certainly possess individuality and character. One needs only to watch a bird family to find that out.For five or six summers Mr.Junco has rented territory in the centre of which our house stands. He may have a different wife each year for all we know; but ‘Mr.Junco is unmistakable. As he looks exactly like any other male Junco (grey above and white below, with a distinct line of division, and white tail shafts) you may well ask why we are so sure of his identity; but we will answer with another question. Are yon acquainted with a Junco that hops upstairs, one step at a time? This happens day after day.each summer.None of his wives or children were ever caught ‘at this trick, and that gives a lot of chances, because he generally has eight children a year—four born the beginning of June and four in early July.We are al- ways sorry for the older ones who are chased off the feeding tray by both parents a very few days after they have learned to feed themselves. Why does Mr.Junco hop upstairs? He is looking for moths, the kind that fly around lighted lamps in the evening.By day they hide in the cracks between the boards of the verandah floor. He goes to endless trouble to find one, hopping under PAGE NINE chairs and hammocks without paying the least attention to their occupants. And when he finds one he cheerfully pulls off its wings and carries the body to a son or daughter. We wish Smartie would rent the territory beside his father's next spring. He could easily be recognized if he came to the feeding tray. But Mr.Junco will never allow him., Spare-Time Training Pays You Four Ways YOU: SERVE Canada LEARN A valuable trade EARN Money while training ENJOY Recreation and Fellowship by training SOI "ASPHALT EL.1177 Hampton Garden Supply L— SOD PAVING cheese comes from monasteries. For instance the famous Canadian Oka cheese which is made by monks at La Trappe from a secret formula long preserved in their monasteries in Europe.Canada Was once the world's largest exporter of cheese but today we are importing as much as we export. There is not sufficient milk available today to manufacture it in such quantities. There are some very strange misconceptions and superstitions connected with cheese. For one thing there is nothing unclean about cheese. No insect life plays any natural part in the making of cheese. If you see worms or other strange forms of life in vour cheese you can be assured that they do not belong there.Mr.Cooper then exhibited a number of strange and exotic cheese that are not usually found on the store counter. He explained that the holes in the Swiss cheese he exhibited are not formed by insects but by the gasses released in the maturing process.Next a flint hard Sar- dinian cheese called Sardo. This cheese is so hard that it cannot be eaten except in powdered form.It is made from sheep and cow milk mixed. An Italian smoked cheese named Probolloni excited a lot of comment.Another interesting fact to come to light is that here in Canada there is no such thing as a Stilton cheese.Stilton merely means the size of the cheese and not the flavor or quality. This of course does not apply to furniture, English Stilton. We stock printing, the following well-known LOOSE LEAF and BLANK BOOK SUPPLIES: Steri- ing — Dominion — 4, 1957 for the major share of the and most valuable player THE Snowdon Major Fastball League rang down the curtain on one of the Bad taste.(Continued from Page 4) have what they missed mn Hungary for 10 years. There is some unemployment in this country. But Canada is a young country and still has to develop much of her culture.Canada is doing something about culture, and in any event it is not the place of a newcomer, who arrived with hat in hand, to even mention such subjects. There is, however, another side to this story. While I am ashamed for mv countrymen that a minute part of them should show such bad manners and be so ungrateful, I am also aware that the resentment to the published statements of the few who went home is a dangerous thing.I remember first murmurings, and then murder — involving the Tews in Hungary.I remember ill-feeling against the Rumanians and the Czechs and then the deep national hatred that followed.DON'T LIKE IT I understand why a newspaper reporter will resent the statements of the ill-manner- ed 63 and allow them to show in his report, I can see why my colleagues speak of “the Hungarian situation” — but I don't like it, I don't apply for jobs, the employers will be blinded by the newspaper reports of the Statement of the 63, and say: “We dont want any foreigners around here.” But more important—it is just the type of small flame that can—by people with bad intentions — be fanned into a white heat of national hatred, the very sorl of thing that we are all, I hope, trying to drive out of this
