but the fact remains that Lional Chevrier took most of the offensive in needling the government on transportation matters.Statistically, Mr.Chevrier has to date entered no less than 12 questions on the House of Commons question paper. Most of them have to do with the St.Lawrence Seaway, and all of them are loaded. This is only natural; Mr.Chevrier, having served as Seaway Authority president, presumably knows more about the subject than anyone else in the country.~ In contrast to Mr.Chevrier's even dozen questions, Mr.Mar- ler has listed only one: “Has an agreement been entered into with the United Kingdom for the construction of a new telephone cable between Canada and the United Kingdom.“If no such agreement has been entered into, what steps have been taken to provide additional telephone cable facilities between Canada and the United Kingdom ?" Parliamentary observers sug- gest that on the basis of the first 10 days of the new Parliament, there is reason to suspect that Mr.Chevrier has been tapped by the Liberals to supplant Mr.Marler as the party's Number One spokesman in Commons for Montreal and the Province of Quebec.+ when he was in his appointed, place in the House he took no | Seeks young players The Montreal Orchestral Society, whose 1957-58 season he.gan on September 9th, is continuing its previous policy of providing practice for young soloists in playing concertos with the orchestra, with the possibility of performing one movement of a concerto at a public rehearsal Any young player who would ne interested in playing a concerto with string orchestra should get in touch with the conductor, Mr, Joseph Berljawsky, 5016 Dornal avenue,, RE.-8-3C88.UR large staff consists of eleven people, each thoroughly trained for his assignment and each with considerable experience in the funeral directing field.BA.Collins INC.FA NUNNS ap willlams 5610 SHERBROOKE STREEF WEST ~ Express your svm- pathy at a time wien the proper words are difficult to find.4509 COTE DES NEIGES RD.AMPLE PARKING FAZILITIES ESTABLISHED 1084 RE.8-1124 Montreal's Newest and Finest Funeral Home ROSEDALE EDGAR A.WRAY (Pres.) 4911 COTE DES NEIGES RD.South of Queen Mary at Decelles We wish to advise that the new Cote des Neiges Blvd.in front of our premises is now open.© RE.1.6868 qu : 2 ESS | = The Chapel of Cathedral Beauty - zay pled out [y r day [ouse mbey there hen arlia.Spect tap.plant Num.mong ce of ee FS ï Sa.nh be.ntin.pro- loists the ty of of a Arsal, ld he certo i get ) Mr, ornal ~ FINE FLOORING o HARDWOOD « ‘ © RUBBER & COMPANY WESTMOUNT 4486 ST.CATHERINE STREET © ASPHALY k Specializing in Refinishing Old Floors | A.Ross Grafton Wx mp The aminey "565 YE O ARS IN GA WESTMOUNT" Reliable WATCH REPAIRS 5 Certified Watchmakers HMAN'S JEWELLERS Free Estimates WE.3-2323 WE.3-4046 1216 Creene Ave.voL.XXVIII, No.46 WESTMOUNT.FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1957 3 Roslyn School is again tops with flowers During the official opening of the Chrysanthemum Flower Show at the greenhouses Thursday by Mayor Sidney Bruneau it was announced that Roslyn School has won the gardening competition for the.City of West- mount Parks Department for the third year, in succession.Second, also for the third consecutive year, was King's School.Announcement of the awards together ‘with the individual prizes was made by Alderman Hugh Seybold, commissioner of parks and recreation. The competition, which is run The flower show has been an annual event, except during the war, since 1928.This year's show includes over 2,500 chrysanthemum blooms selected from 137 varieties.in conjunction with the flower show, was started in 1949 for the pupils of the fourth and fifth grade of elementary schools, The program consists of a general talk on the use and functions of plants, a descriptive tour of the greenhouses and the potting and growing of a plant hy each pupil.Individual prize winners for the best grown plants during 1957 were: Helga Schwalbe.King's School; Westmount Rotary “The profession of undertaker or funeral director seems to hold a horrible fascination for some people, who wonder how I could ever stand to be in such a business”, Ross James an executive of Tees and Co., funeral directors, told Westmount Rotary Club Wednesday.“Funerals and funeral directors are the butts of considerable humor, a humor which is based instinctively on fear”, he said.“This fascination and fear goes back to the dawn of history, when man took to his heels at the sudden death of a fellow cave dweller. This was fear of the unknown.Primitive man thought death was caused by evil spirits, and the same thing would happen to him if he didn't get away from the vicinity im- mediateiy.” “Later on they covered tn» Abu people who believed a corpse could still see after death and cast an evil eye on the place he died causing further sickness and death.” “The custom of casting three handfuls of earth on the coffin originated in ancient Egypt.Another interesting custom is the Irish wake which supposedly started with St.Patrick who told his mourning followers to forget their grief and rejoice at his comfortable exit.It is a custom which is still followed with enthusiasm.” “The history of the present day funeral director goes back + 5 Hh # WILLIAM D.MORROW of Westmount has been awarded a Paris, University of Geneva, the University of Me:buurne, all appear peside McGill and Columbia on the faculty lists, AMBITIOUS PROGRAM Naturally, with such an ambitious program the school curriculum isn’t & normal one, or example, children begin to learn French at the age of five in the elementary school. For iwo years they have already been learning French songs in the the kindergarten, and at the age of eight they are reading fluently from .French newspapers. In the high school the “pbroad and deep” policy is continued to develop every ability that a child might have. All students ‘take both Iutin and Science, as well as English, French, Maths, History, Music, Arts (both industrial and fine), and take part in the games and gymnastic programa Within this broad framework kept ut a maximum of fifteen, of freedom. The classes are the teachers have À great deal and they are able to concan- trate on each child. All the time the emphasis is on progression. No child is kept back because his or her classmates are not as clever. They are all individuais within the group, and their particular abilities are guided along the best lines in reading or experiment, depending on the subject.; Contrary to current beliefs, the teachers insist that this emphasis on individual progression does nol tend to develop complexes ir the less-intelligent child. Each pupil quickly finds his or her level in the group: and works along that line. This system makes small classes a niust. And although the school is currently short of funds, the Board refuses to take more children and ruin the individual pupil's prospects.Mrs.Forbes, an official of the school said, “We need money for materials, books and a whole lot of things. But if it means crowding the classes to get them then we refuse, There are no lowering of standards after coming this far.” RELATIONSHIPS The ultimate succéss of ‘his system of education depends on the relationship between teacher and pupil. The teacher has to have an intimate knowledge of each child. This is gained in two ways.First, it is done through the parents.St.George's has a strong home and school association, and a number of parents are members of the school board. With each school report the parents are invited to an individual meeting with the child’s teacher to discuss his or her progress, In addition, parénts of children who are working below their capabilities are asked to meet the teacher to discuss the problem, Second, from the beginnipg of their educaticn the group apirit is impressed on the children, They are assured that at any time they have the right to criticize and contribute: It is emphasized that the teacher is part of the group, and not the strong- arm at the head. They may question the choice of text-books, make suggestions for improving the interest value of a lesson,.and are encouraged to discuss the methods being applied to them, As soon as this spirit has been established the children are wide open to encouregement, And they quickly realize the value of hard work.A history teacher insisted HOMEWORK The same teacher spoke of a class of hers that had recently complained that they were getting too much homework. The principal came in and spoke to them for half an hour on the value of the extra work, and pointed out why they needed it.Be- Dn IT TREY
