to Westmount Rotary Club the Mayor added, “The impression one gets from recent reports is that the object of Metropolitan government is to relieve the City of Montreal of parasites in the form of the municipalities around it.But our relations with this City already prove we are partners.In fact we give more than we receive.” | The Mayor then pointed out that Westmount pays for all its | re-! ference library for the benefit | of everyone who cares to use | them.“Besides these direct costs,” | the Mayor stated, “There are many more that are indirect.Items such as resolutions which are beginning to come in from Liberal constituencies all over thé country.The three-day convention will be held with the primary purpose of choosing a new Liberal party leader, but there will be several subsidiary features which, it is hoped, will give the public a better insight into the realm of practical politics.For one thing, Mr.Marler’s committee is making arrangements with the CBC to move & television camera right into the resolutions room, to pick up nart of the actual work involved in processing and approving, or disapproving, the many resolutions.Since these represent the thinking and wishes of Liberals from every section of Canada, their importance is self-evident.Moreover, the resolutions which are finally passed by the convention will in effect constitute the party's platform at the ‘next election.Another feature of the con- véntion consists in the decision to allot six hours—apportion- .ed throughout each of the three sitting days — to permit the 2,500 delegates and alternates to propose resolutions from the floor.“This has never been done before at a national political convention in this the second is to cast our net much more widely and think of the preparation which God made through the great nations of the Ancient World.Let us be modest on this occasion and see what the different Sundays mean to us and how they prepare us to receive the Infant Christ, so that we too may hear the message that came to the shepherds: "Untq¢ you is horn this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” The Epistle for the First Sunday in Advent reminds us that “the night is far spent and the day is at hand;” the Gospel tells us of the Coming of the Christ into the Temple.The old Salisbury Benediction and the modern English Collect then lay the stress on the Coming and the need for preparation.Preparation for what?We know the preparation that God had made among His own people through His prophets; and even among the Gentiles through longings variously expressed in the ei9poets.And yet we know now unprepared the world was for that Coming: “He came unto His own and His own received Him not.” He Himself made preparation of His own people in His Ministry; but when He came into His own city the authorities received Him with hostility.His disciples have been maing preparation for the Coming for centuries, and the world is still unready for Him.St.Paul's suggestion for preparation is simple but not easy: it demands surrender and acceptance, You will find it in the Epistle: “Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light.” Notice the plural — “works”.St.Paul has a very nasty list of the works of the flesh or darkness in Galations V; and a description of the armour of the Christian in Ephesians VI.The passage is familiar enough but suppose we read it again for ourselves and see whether we would find the armour so unaccustomed that we could not put it on; the girdle of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.Armour is of no use unless we are trained to it.But the preparation for the the Coming is not an easy-going affair, but a warfare, and in warfare we must have our weapons ready and be trained to use them.SYNAGOGUES SHAAR HASHOMAYiM 450 Kensington Avenue, Westmcant, Qua.Rabbi Wilf-ed Shuchat Hazzan Nathan Mendelson Rev.J.J.Fromm SABBATH The Sabbath Sedra Vayyetze Friday Evening, November 29th 3:30 p.m.Candle Lighting.4:00 p.m.Friday Evening Service.SABBATH SERVICES 9:00 a.m.Preliminary Service Scriptural Readings;
