But you won't be there. If you've shot the holiday time and money for this year, ponder the proposition for next year, please.(We'll now pause for ten seconds, to remind mothers with school-going broods that this piece isn’t directed to them.Your rewards will be in the future, we hope.In the meantime, have the titular head of the family take you to one of the nice restaurants listed elsewhere on these pages for dinner.(Plug, L.P.) man who inhabits this planet, who is made of the dust of the earth and yet has dominion over the earth? He is a most curious creature — curious in two ways — he is always asking questions about himself, and he excites the most violent curiosity. The animals with whom he consorts might well ask what this strange creature is if thye could ask questions, and a questioner of 3000 years ago asked the question for them: “Lord, what is man?” That man gave one answer to his own question; William Shakespeare gave another.Still another “Man is a thing of nought; his time ancient answered: passeth away like a shadow.” Science tells us that man is* not only composed of earthly elements, he is also a kin to the animals. Some people do not like the idea, but I still remember the shock I got when I saw the leg of a bear hanging up in a country butcher shop.It looked so much like my own leg that I felt mine to see if I still had it.Jt is just a century since Darwin and Wallace propounded the theory that man is derived by malural selection from some primitive animal species, It was not a new theory. The Greeks had it 2500 years ago, but did not try io prove it.The theologians tells us that man is not only composed of the earthly elements but that it is God who made him so.He agrees that man is akin to the animals, but that there is also an infimte difference between them. The old Scripture story says that God breathed into man the breath of Jife and man became a living soul.He is a creature but a creature with a difference. And note that creature means a created thing. He is God’s handiwork. There is no contradiction be- {ween the scientist and the theo- kogians. The scientist is concerned with man as he is and with what he does. The theologian must try to answer the questions: Where does man come from? What is his purpose here ?What is his destiny ?The scien- test asks: What does man do?The theologian asks: What should man do?The apparent clash over the question of creation is a mock battle, The scientist says: On the evidence the history of the earth runs into billions of years, and ihe life of man is the product of evolution, The theologian agrees, and adds: But back of these billions of years 1s God, who does not belong to years but to eternity; and the method of His working is, on the evidence, evo- Jution. If the scientist finds it necessary to change the theory of evolution the theologian is quite unmoved. He is willing to accept any workable hypothesis of how man and his world op- €rale, But when it comes to man — not only how he behaves, but how he should behave, the theologian demands the right to be heard. And his claim is that while man is an animal he is spirit also; that while he belongs to this world he is also a citizen of another spiritual world; that while while he is being trained io live here he is also learning 10 live in eternity. On this Labor Day weekend it is necessary to emphasize one of the most striking things about man — he is a worker, always adapting himself to the world and the world to himself.A beaver will build beaver houses till his race is extinct; man will build anything that the circumstance calls for.He will tame other animals and improve them; he will use the wild plants and tame them; he will not be satis- field with a stick and a stone for tools; he tames the raetals and shapes them to his purpose. He is not satisfied with a surface knowledge of the planet he in-+ x Westmount Baptist Church * Making a living has become so important that many a very interesting radio discussion, the subject being : “Why are municipal politicians held in low regard ?” As usual, in such discussions, there were opinions pro and con.I think that the average citizen would express surprise that those who serve in a local municipal capacity are somewhat suspect. Those who differed pointed out that municipal politicians give a great deal of their time and get little thanks.I believe that the suggested low regard is due to the publicity arising from the exposure of scandals in large cities. We have all heard of Tammany Hall and like organizations in several of the large American cities.Occasionally, interested individuals in the smaller towns and cities may have sought personal profit rather than the general welfare, but I think it can be said in all truth, that the majority who assume the legislative burdens devolving upon the municipal councillor or alderman are men of integrity who seek nothing more than to serve their fellow rate payers and promote the lest interests of the municipality. One of the speakers remarked that because of the “low regard” in which municipal were held that it was difficult to get prominent and capable citizens to become candidates for municipal honors. One can perhaps appreciate that a certain type of municipal politician may hope lo profit because of his office as a councillor, alderman, or controller.less have been and may still be, men of this type but they seldom.are long in office. The public spirited citizen who is persuaded to become a member of a city or town council is generally a business or professional man who sincerely believes he can render service that will be of benefit to his fellow rate payers. He ig in the same position as the devoted men or women who sit on boards of hospitals and other institutions. Those in the latter category are held in high regard because they give their valuable time and experience in the carrying on of the association's or institution’s normal activities.Dealing with actual situations where can we get a finer and more gelf-sacrificing group of citizens than those who compose the councils of Westmount, Hampstead, Montreal West and Outremont ?The members of these several councils are municipally patriotic and proud of the place their respective municipalities habits; he will not be happy till’ the Creator; it is when he is him- he has unlocked its inmost sec- self creating that he is most him- rets.He js a fellow-worker with self, politicians x There may doubt- ’ hold as efficiently administered little democracies, They serve I am advised without compensation other than the satisfaction that comes from the consciousness that they make a contribution to the welfare of the people who dwell within the confines of the municipality.Westmount, in particular, has been extremely well served since it was first incorporated as a city.A list of those who have held office discloses that the mayor and aldermen have been citizens of unblemished reputation and a credit, not only to their city, but municipal government generally. There are grumblers and critics who would find fault with saints but the overwhelming number of those who live here regard themselves as fortunate. One wonders why these fine men give so freely of their time and ability to administer the city or town's affairs; but ag pointed out in an earlier paragraph it is because of a desire to render service in the public interest. We who live in well-governed municipalities should on every occasion express not only our appreciation but admiration of those who represent us in the municipal, legislative and administrative bodies. If I speak SYNOGOGUES TEMPLE EMANU-EL 4100 Sherbrooke Street West Westmount, Montreal Dr.Harry J.Stern, Rabbi Otto he
