provincial president of the Social Democratic Party (CCFY and an official of the United Steelworkers of Ameren, stated that the Liberal and Pro- gressive-Conservative parties are in effect a unified force.Boudreau was replacing the scheduled speaker of the evening, Quebec Federation of Labor vice-president Put Burke, who was called out of town.Present al the meeting was Mrs.Therese Casgrain, national vice-presi- dent of the CCF.A true two-party system will operate with the realization of the present movement towards unificaion of the CCF party with labor interests he told members. At present, labor has no well defined political association with any Canadian party such as in England. However, said Boudreau, al- Sorry copy who are saddled with the responsibilities of exams, families convention of 1956 where the main resolu tion passed Indicated that labor wus now ready to take an active part in forming a political force which would balance the power of the two older parties.“What we need is the co-op- eration of liberal-minded people who want reform to take place,” he said.“The peuple are fed up because they know there Is no real contest in politics any more.“Major parties are actually supported by the same financial resources, so that regardless of which one is in power the results are the same.” Boudreau felt that Canadians children have little to do with one another, contrary to current opinion, two West End doctors reported to the American Psychiatric Association in Philadelphia leon Friday. Both on the staff of McGill University, Dr.Nathan Epstein, psychiatrist, 4342 Sherbrooke street west, and William A, Westley, sociologist, 149 Westminster avenue north, made a four-year study of nine families with adolescent children, The findings were unexpected, the two researchers stated, but established that in the group of families studied, there was no firm relationship between the parents and the average level of emotional health ameng their children.Surprisingly, the opposite seemed to apply more in these families, all of which were white, Protestant, and Anglo-Saxon.“Other clinical data,” the that the basic personality structures of the patients were not altered through treatment. In successful cases the treatment had supported the patients during turbulent or threatening life ITH Montreal pouring more and more traffic into Westmount at the dinner-time rush- hour now that Burnside has been opened up, local officials are waiting for word on developments that will force action on the widening of Western avenue.Official thinking here is that it probably won't happen this year, and maybe not next ycar. But come it must — and from the standpoint of motorists, the sooner the better. Two months ago West- mount’s public works officials heard a rumor that there was some action imminent.but a check with Montreal proved the rumor exaggerated, The whole matter, of course, ties in with the master-plan for island- wide traffic arrangements, and in the long run will probably wind up on the doorstep of Metro, Next project St.Catherine ITH expropriation proceedings concluded after two and a half years for the property required to swing the western end of St.Catherine street round in an arc to Claremont, Westmount's engineers are planning the last step in the development, To complete the project, St.Catherine will be extended west, along what is now York avenue, swinging in a quarter circle to meet the south end of Claremont.Plan is to call the new segment St.Catherine street, right up to Western avenue. The move is a good one, and should be and aid to traffic at this point.YOU SAY Judge underlines right of arrest Sir: The increase in major and minor crimes has reached an alarming degree. This applies more particularly to the larger rather than the smaller municipality. The case with which erim- inals secure dangerous weapons makes the task of the police officer all the more hazardous. The bandits who rob banks, waylay and assault citizens, -nd burglarize homes and offices, do not hesitate to shoot the police officer who must in the performance of his sworn duty arrest the culprit, be the risks what they may.1t is forgotten that although the policeman is the guardian of the peace he is nevertheless entitled to the aid of the citizen. The policeman can at all times when in peril, call upon any passing citizen to help him, even though it entails a risk for the citizen. This is perhaps not generally known since lhe average layman is not acquainted with certain sections of the criminal code.A few weeks ago u brave citizen of Westmount held criminals at bay who he found in his garage. His wife in the meantime phoned the police who took the culprits into custody. They are now in prison. In acting as he did, the Westmount citizen performed a duty incumbent upon every law abiding citizen to carry out.Section 30 of the Criminal Code reads as follows: “Everyone who witnesses a breach of the peace is justified in interfering to prevent the continuance or renewal g thereof and may detain any person who commits or one of the great neurosurgeons of our time, doubtless has brought many of his achievements and personality traits sharply into focus for those who knew him.I recall the remarkable stature of the man on an occasion when his mettle was tried to the limit, and he measured up to the challenge.Dr.Cone, in my estimation, was a great man for many reasons, but one added reason was the fact that he became great in the shadow of another great neurosurgeon, Dr.Wilder Penfield. It is never easy to make a mark in any profession while standing alongside one of the great masters. The occasion I recall was the the school since 1952, “the purpose of the move is to provide adequate accommodation for the number of pupils we have already.” Present facilities are a far cry from the small room on Drummond dtreet which housed the Study's first six pupils but they are still not adequate for the school's needs.“In the last few years the world around us has been changing rapidly,” says history, english and latin to very young children. The present building on Sea- forth road was leased from the late S.H.Ewing, who took a great personal interest in the school's activities and did all he could to improve the building which he himself built nearly sixty years ago.Even with this help, accommodations proved insufficient.and in 1935 the second building on Cote des Neiges road was added. One of the most important recent changes at the school is the conversion of a small study room into a library which contains 15,000 books.Miss Lamont came to The Study in 1952, after serving on the board of governors. The 1958 figure represented an increase of $103,364 over the previous year's deficit, and including $109,000 in bank interest charges.“We are considering reviewing our administrative methods,” Morgan stated, “with the expert assistance of outside management consultants, to ensure that we are operating efficiently and economically.” The main reason for the de- fiat, Morgan said, is the insufficient reimbursement to the hospital for the treatment of indigent patients. The loss in 1959% represented $1,094,963.| Said the president, “We feel that both provincial and city governments should assume, as they have been pressed many times to assume, their just share.” NEW GOVERNOR H.Roy Crabtree, 615 Belmont avenue, was the only new governor posers, and has given an impressive number of first performances of new compositions, many of which have been dedicated to her.Extensive travel in Europe include France, England, Ireland, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and the Baltic States, fostered her interest in the various musical cultures.“I am interested in new compositions for the sake of what they can offer, rather than just novelty,” Mnie Goldblatt told The Examiner.“These compositions are chosen for their appeal to an audience, or their usefulness to a student.New works.that are contemporary can be interesting, whether they are by Canadians or not.” A music store owner in downtown Montreal, has been stocking new compositions for years, because a demand for them comes shortly after they are played over the air by Mme.Goldblatt.This pianist has devoted a lot of time and study to contemporary Canadian music and has broadcast a great deal of it.: She is thus practised in dealing with the various idioms in which our composers are writing and the range Is a pretty wide one.Rose Goldblatt has given programs containing compositions of the old masters also: Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Siegmeis- ter, and others. She also gave a first performance of Chopin Nocturne in B Major. Her natural talent for her instrument, apparent from her childhood when she played for the first time in public at the age of six, her sensitive musicianship, enhanced by her years in Europe and her charm and easy grace on the platform establish her as on of ,the significant planists of the day.She is slender, petite and dark eyed, and greets visitors with a warm smile, Sympathetic and direct, she immediately attracts people, Her simplicity and keen sparkling sense of humor have made her many friends.Among the new compositions played for the first time in public by Rose Goldblatt are the following: Alexander Brott's piano suite, New York Hall and Ladies Musical in Montreal; Elie Siegmeister's primo sonata, New York; Oscar Moravitz; Hector Gratton’s “A Fairy Tale” and several other compositions; Severen Moisse; Albertine Caron Legris; Jean Coulthard; Irish
