Nations and Nobel Peace prizewinner, was refused membership in the West Side Tennis Club, because he is a Negro. This news precipitated a call on Rev.Charles Humphrey Este, BD Litt D, who, as the minister at the Union United Church, 3007 Delisle street, on the border of Westmount, has been spiritual leader of the- colored community in Montreal for 34 of his 63 years. We wanted to know, not only the history of Dr.Este and of his church, but if there is evidence of racial discrimination a I have to keep it for the family.ficulties 1 am willing but the neighbors will complain. We rented to colored people once but they allowed the property to fall into disrepair, were clamorous and disagreeable to the neighbors. We don’t care to rent io negroes. Some people have no logical reasons, just flimsy excuses.” Dr.Este sald there is not so much discrimination in Canada .as in the United States.“But you wonder if Canada would be as cordial as they are now if there was a larger negro population,” he said.“I have no conclusions, just a question mark.” The Canadian people on the whole, he said, are more sympathetic and more democratic in their relations and attitudes to other races.“They have a cosmopolitan approach in regard to humanity and the minority races,” Dr.Este said.‘I have heard from many colored peo- Rev.Charles H.Este, BD, Mr.Bunche wiich he called most regrettable in the face of United Nations efforts to impress the world with the idea of its working for a better world.‘In some areas of Montreal there is slight evidence of what I call diplomatic discrimination,” he continued.“Conditions are one thousand per cent better than 25 years ago.One reason is that colored people are now widely diffused and some are acquiring fine homes in districts once styled as exclusive. As rosy as that seems, there may still be instances where colored people are not allowed to rent and here is the evidence of diplomatic discrimination I mentioned.” Dr.’ Este 1s a tall, graceful man whose provocative elo- © quence in and out of the pulpit is a joy to hear.He spoke about the various receptions a prospective colored tenant might expect on enquiring about a home, apartment or room, “It could be any one“of these,” said Dr.Este.“The house is taken, ple with lucrative pdsitions in the United States that they can feel the difference when they cross the border. There is an atmosphere of friendliness.I am not saying that for the purpose of winning plaudits, but out of my own feelings and experience. That is no partial assessment coming from a tourist but from a man who nas had to meet all kinds of rebuffs, “Do you know that I see a renaissance of racial understanding? The negro should not be too dogmatic in his conclusions that he will be acceptable to every area of human society. He should face life with certain reservations and an awareness that, as a result of his pigmentation, anything may arise. Not that he should so adjust his life in a defence mechanism stage that when difficulties arise he should not be swept off his feet.” Dr.Este has this time it was with the desperation of a lunatic.I saved $250 to go 10 theological college.” In 1925 Dr.Este graduated from Congregational College, McGill University, He was ordained a minister on May 10 of that same year, taking over the Union United Church, In the "40's he won his doctor of literature and bachelor of divinity degrees from Pioneer Seminary, Rockford, Illinois. He majored in religious journalism and for a while considered resigning from the church to pursue this profession.“The needs for my work here were too great and there was always this dream of expansion,” he said. His dream of expansion came true.It is the expansion, renovation and modernization of the old church.“This old build- mg dates back to 1899 and was an apology for a church, inconvenient and totally inadequate ° for our needs,” Dr.Este said.“The sum of $150,000 is being spent.Forty thousand is a gift from the United Church, another $40,000 a loan from the same source, and the remainder pledg~ ed from the congregation. Our relationship with the United Church is very cordial, indeed.” The church, tinished in oak, is beautifully simple in design, cool and peaceful. The facilities now include recreation rooms, offices, large reception hall, auditorium with stage. The congregation numbers 400 members but Dr.Este has 1,000 under his pastoral care, About five per cent of the membership is white.“This church must be viewed in the light of a community church,” Dr.Esté said. The minister has joined many mixed couples.“Many negroes have married white girls, But there is a new trend of white men marrying colored girls,” he said.“I never discuss the racial angle with them unless they mention it to me.I figure the couples are fully conscious of what they are doing.I see to it that the legal requirements are filled and if a girl is of tender age I do not perform the ceremony without the consent of both parents.” .Help Mate His wife, the from this predominantly Anglo-Saxon community of Westmount; but they will come a little nearer tomorrow as members of the Spamish consulate on Sherbrooke street near Greene avenue celebrate Spain's National Day, July 18.National Day commemorates not the end, but the start of the Spanish Civil War nearly a quarter-century ago.According to Carlos M.Fernandez-Shaw, Consul of Spain in Canada, this day was chosen because it symbolized the start of a new life in Spain, and the overthrow of communism there.Loud in his praises of the advances in Spain since that date, Mr, Fernandez-Shaw states that the Spanish government has done everything in its power’ to become self-sufficing.New heavy industry developments dot the landscape, and Spain has become a maker of steel, trucks and cars.Automobile firms from other European countries, including the French Renault manufacturers, have also established plants in Spain. The development of internal resources is am important feature in rebuilding Spain's economy.Home economy was disastrously undermined with the easy wealth that shiploads of gold from Spain's former American colonies brought.Internal disturbances and disagreements prevented the country from keeping pace with the industrial developments of the world until the civil war ending 1939 brought an end to political dissension under Generalissimo Franco. On October 12, Spain and the Spanish-American countries celebrate “Dia de la Hispanidad,” a day when the many nations, separated politically, recall their common bond of language and culture.October 12, 1492 was the date of Columbus’ discovery of America. On the more exotic side, says the consul general, Spain produces fine leather goods — gloves and shoes particularly — textiles, and a great many wines and sherries. But one of the mainstays of Spanish economy, and what could be called a natural resource, is its wonderful climate. The hot sun and clear skies produce some of the world's signatures for his petition to be sent to Mayor Leading objections feature the two projects which will place several apartments on the former site of the Montreal Children’s Hospital on Cedar avenue; project on the Outremont side of the mountain.Forty thousand women, members of the Montreal Council of Women, sent a letter to the Mayor ,expresaung the hope that the wisdom and good judgment of the City Council of Outremont will prevail over those who would be short sighted enough to encroach upon one of Montreal's most important assets — The Mountain. The Montreal Real Estate Board and the Province of Quebec Association of Architects have voiced their opposition also.“It would not be in the best interests of the City and citizens of Greater Montreal, that buildings be permitted to encroach upon or impair park facllities, or areas so situated that they might properly be developed as part of municipal parks.” The Quebcc Sarto Fournier.Association of Architects most strongly urged that proposals be carried out to enlarge the ame- ount of land homologated for the preservation of Mout Royal Park, It called upon the City Couns cll to approve the expropriation of the Cedar Avenue site.“To provide luxury living and an cle- gant panorama for tenants, withe out spoiling the Mountain sil houettes for the majority of Montrealers, should be the criterion.” It is obvious that the enlightened professional viow- point suppouts the gonerul desire of the people that the Mountain should be cherished as “Lhe crown of the city.” This is not just a romantic idea. The publio is afraid that if these two pro- jeola are allowed to be carried out, future buildings will eventually rise on the land which has been so carefully preserved as The present controversy concerning Mount Royal many serve a very useful purpose if it sets a permanent limit to encroachments. We who live in Montreal are so accustomed to the mountain that we do not realize that it gives a unique character to the oity; just as Central Park in New York or Hyde Park and Kew Gardens in London set a unique stamp on those cities. When we think of the land value of those parks we must commend the cities for holding them as open breathing spaces in the midst of the cement and gas fumes of modern life.We must feel a certain indignation against our city planning departments for allowing this special feature of our city to be threatened, and we may be exasperated with the commercial interests who want to make money out of them.At the same time we must remember that the site of the Children's Memorial Hospital has been on the market for three years and no one has been prepared to buy it.The Hospital authorities had to have the money.Church and charitable institutions would have liked to get the property for various purposes but could not spend that Eddy, including the following: “Because Life is God, Life must be eternal, self-existent.Life is the everlasting I AM, the Being who was and is and shall be, whom nothing can erase.” Correlative Scripture will’ include this from I John: “And this is the promise that he hath and the City of Outremont naturally was not averse to acquiring millions of dollars worth of taxable property.Throughout the controversy the Parks and Playgrounds Association has been active and the Parks Department of the city has had its say as well, but neither the Association nor the Department is strong enough to protect the mountain without public support. Now that the support is forthcoming the pressure must be maintained. The simplest way is for each of us to write to our local councillor and demand protective action. Then we.shall have council action in September.Even if we get that action the mountain still is not safe. The action taken in September can be undone ten years later or less. The best way, apart from the City Council, is to strengthen the Parks and Playgrounds Association, and make membership in it something to be valued, Their activities have been of the greatest help to the city, but they are less vocal than they might be.Jehovah's Witnesses to attend conference E.Vaillancourt, presiding minister of Jehovah's witnesses, announced today that the West Unit of.the Montreal congregation of Jehovah's witnesses has been invited to attend 2 four-day convention to.be, held July 23 to 26 at Landgdejvne Park, Ottawa.E.Vaillenceurt will head the local delegation of about, 100 persons. The convention: is.arranged by the Watchtower Bible and, Tract - Society, located in Toronto, Ontario, for Jehovah's witnesses. An attendance _in excee of 12,- 000 is anticipated.“The purpose of the meeting,” said E.Vaillancourt, “is to provide addi al Bible instruction for the Witnesses and to enable them to apply Bible principles ‘more fully to their every day lives and activities. For this reason the program carries ‘the ‘Awake Ministers'.™ There will be morning, after noon and evening sessions devoted to Bible talks, discussions and practical demonstrations, he explained.E.Vaillancourt further © reported that several represehtae tives of the branch office, ine cluding Percy Chapman, Superintendent of Ministers in Canada, will speak in Ottawa.Highe light of the convention will be the public address by Chapman at 3 p.m, Sunday, July 26, on “When God Speaks Peace to All Nations.” be.ad i * £ æ Î i Lin al Rg er remets Big job coming for Dr.Alan Ross president of ninth Paediatrics Congress Dr.Alan Ross of Belmont avenue will have a big job on his hands this week- way to this city from al parts pt the world, and they bring with them wives and children.4 “An invitation was issued to the International Paediatrics As- gociation, permanent section, at Copenhagen in 1956 by the Canadian government, and the invi- lation was accépted,” said Dr.Ross.The International Paediatrics Association, acts as a nuc- feus for these congresses.President of the IPA is Prof.G.Fan- eoni of Zurich, Switzerland./ The Canadian Paediatrics So- elety is host, and as such invites delegates from other paediatric societies who are members of the IPA.“We are very proud of the number of eminent paediatri- clans who are going to attend;” Dr.Ross stated.“Queen Elizabeth ts Patron of the Congress, and will send greetings for the opening ceremony.Sir Wilfred Sheldon who was knighted recently, is also coming to the Congress. He is a distinguished paediatrician who is caring for her children. The opening address will be de- Yivered by Prime Minister Diefenbaker.” Congress session will be held on one floor of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, to enable the delegates to go quickly from one room to another with a minimum loss of time.“The study of children has developed over the years so that it now has a great many special fields of interest. To enable the delegates to follow the different events, we are planning to havea ‘ system of translation into three languages, Spanish, French and English,” continued Dr.Ross.“This program puts great emphasis on smaller round table : tonferences to be run concurrent-w ly, and will cover all aspects of paediatrics.Paediatrics has come to include the study of everything pertaining to the mental, emotional and physical growth of infants and children.from conception to maturity.” “Dr.R.L.Denton, is secretary general of the congress. On his shoulders and those of his com- Mmittees, most of the work of organizing the congress has fal- < len” concluded Dr.Ross.!
