soldiery would be employed on sentry duty at the various banks dotting the metropolitan area — in uniform.armed.and ready to shoot if necessary. The real problem then.as now.is the chronic shortage of policemen.Let there be no doubt, there is a state of emergency in Canada’s metropolis, even if it has not been officially declared. The tragic death Friday of Bank of Montreal Manager Royce Smith by hoodlums robbing his Darlington bank struck very close to home. When utter bums can shoot leading citizens — Mr.Smith was just that: a church and community leader and re- specied bank officer .— then the situation is little short of anarchy. If the victim had been a political leader.and the mo- five assassination instead of robbery.a state of emergency undoubtedly would be actions Sir:—Armed and brutal banditry has reached an all-time high in this city. The murder of a highly respected citizen, who endeavored to frustrate the robbing of the bank of which he was manager.has shocked the whole community. After committing the murder the trio entered the bank and stole all available cash. The despicable and cowardly cur who killed a brave and upright citizen, together with his accomplices, had evidently made up his mind that nothing would be allowed to stand in his way when he participated in the hold-up.The present situation calls for drastic and urgent action on the part of governments on all levels.1 have all along contended that banditry can be curbed if the authorities will take the necessary steps to deal with the crime cpidemic.1 have, with your kind co-operation in printing letters addressed to you, suggested what these measures should be.1 regret to say.that the apathy of the public and important organizations has made the situation more difficult for the police to whom we look for protection of life and property.I have for several years expressed the view that major crimes, those committed by armed bandits, could be substantially reduced if it was made almost impossible for lawbreakers to obtain revolvers or other lethal weapons, Through vour columns 1 advocated that the manufacture, importation, and distribution of revolvers should be an absolute government monopoly.Further.that no persons be allowed to enter Canada in possession of a lethal weapon of any description. This should apply to visitors and immigrants whether they enter by rail, car.plane, or ship.If possessing a revolver.it should be delivered to a government officer to Le returned when they depart, and, in the case of an immigrant, confiscated.Possessors of a weapon should likewise declare under oath they have no other weapons of an offensive nature, A false statement should be severely punished.H should likewise be made mandatory for judges and magistrates to impose penalties so severe that they would con stitute a deterrent. We must not forget that the armed thug is a potential Killer who is not entitled to the slightest consideration. He is a social outlaw since "THEY SAY This is no time for ease and comfort. If is the time — Winston Churchill he is a constant menace to the person and property. We have gone altogether ivo far in our leniency toward potential murdcrers. In other words, we save them from the gallows and bury their victims in the cemetery. The law breaker is a serious liability.hence the duty of both police and public is Lo reduce it to as near zero as possible.in the matter of protection for our banks, to which they are fully entitled, since they are heavy taxpayers and (trustees of the funds deposited with them; I suggest that during the epidemic two armed soldiers with loaded rifles and bayonets, and revolvers in their holsters, should be stationed in each branch bank.Thugs would hardly dare enter and hold up a bank thus protected. There are thousands of soldiers available in this and other provinces to perform this duty. The Canadian Bankers Association should make ' representations in this connection to the Federal Government. When an epidemic takes place affecting the health and lives of the people, the government takes the necessary action to meet it.A like situation now confronts the people who are the prey of bandits, and the government is justified in taking the necessary steps legislatively and administratively to let the bandits know that crime does not pay.Bernard Rose Military training for all teen-agers Sir: Re: hoodlums.Don’t you think ils about time psychiatrists, and sociologists realize they've been pampering, excusing teenage acts long enough?‘There may be good in everyone.but (hose who want to play rough should be dealt with in the same manner.Don’t forget there'll be another crop of tough ones tomorrow. If the first ones could get away with but a slight reprimand, why not they? You'll probably argue that it’s their first time.Yes, the first time they've been caught. They finally get to do big things because they slowly build up to it by committing small irresponsible acts and were gently scolded.Of one thing I'm sure, don’t ever abolish capital punishment because these tough teenagers will certainly feel free to let themselves go all the way.The best thing that could happen in this country is military training.where discipline is rigidly enforced, and that's what is lacking here — discipline ‘Teachers in outside or in other business would earn $10,000 NOT $4-6,000, by the way $6500 or near there is the most teachers in high schools may earn, B) Holidays at Easter and Christmas are either spent correcting exams, or if they have been done earlier possibly a few lost hours of sleep may be caught up: also if exams are corrected before these holidays, our teachers must prepare next term's work.Summer holidays are not spent at the beach, but most teachers are attending summer courses so thal they may be fully prepared for next year's class, on modern methods, better teaching aids.C) Hours: — From nine to three are the.actual school hours with the R.C.guing from eight to four or nine to four. These are only school hours, no one thinks of the extra NON-PAID (ime spent al home, correcting papers, and for planning the next day's lessons, making notes for the students.D) Best terms they can get: — Simply quit teaching and go into another business where more money would be earned, but instead of doing this OUR teachers spend most of their time helping if asked by students, after school, doing their best with in many cases improper, unfit, unuse- able tools, books, blackboards, desks, which do not help one in trying to receive a better education but rather hinder them.1 do not have the slightest hope of my letter being published, for even though you are in the wrong, you don't have to admit it to the publie, and therefore will let the matter drop rather than facing up, and making the best of a bad thing.Personally, if any more such articles appear, without any objection being raised, and being published, your paper as far as [I am concerned may stop coming to our house, for we are not interested in degrading GOOD PEOPLE, but doing something about the bad is our concern, A VERY!!! disappointed reader Dick Hagan, Student Reader has right to limit her reading Sir: Due to the enclosed editorial «Sympathy for teachers starts to wear thin") rose from the dead He was other of the mighty acts restored to the world of of God — the Ascension of things. It is no wonder that Our Lord.| can well Imagine His disciples took it for people saying: ‘1 can see the necessity of the Resurrection. It was not possible that such a one as Jesus of Nazareth should remain in the grave. The whole universe is of such a nature that perfect righteousness must be vindicated.Hence the necessity of the Resurrection and of the Appearance of Jesus to those who had followed Him.” But the same people might also say : “But why the necessity of the Ascension ?What purpose could it serve in the working out of salvation?” That, of course, is the purpose of all the mightv acts of God — by them He worked out our salvation. It was obviously the purpose of the Incarnation — “He shall save His people from their sins.” It was equally ithe purpose of the Crucifixion — “He bore our sins in His own Body on the tree.” Bul again the questioner asks “Why the Ascension?” The answer lies in the fact that the whole visible life, of our Saviour was lived on the earthly plans and emphasized earthly and material things. The Incarnation itself was an emphasis on a human, material body like ours.In His Ministry our Lord not only forgave sins, but He healed diseased bodies and distracted minds. He fed the multitude with bread. He even restored the dead to physical earthly life. And when He granted that He would restore the kingdom of Israel. The, Hebrew ideal had always been: a great earthly kingdom; the | idea of Resurrection was a late comer in their thinking. But Jesus had said before’ Pilate: “My Kingdom is not, of this world.” He was con-, cerned in this world, for He had prayed not that His disci-: ples should be taken out of the world but that they should be saved from the evil, However, if he was to lift their thoughts to a higher level He must do the lifting. As long as He was in the world their love would centre there. If he merely passed out of their sight as He had done more than once after His Resurrection, they would still look for His return. So He led them out of the City to the Mount of Olives, and there He was parted from them and a cloud received Him out of their sight. They realized that the parting was final for the time being, and they returned to Jerusalem with joy.prepared to carry out His order to remain in the City and wait for the next: manifestation of God's power. If Jesus was to lift the vision of His disciples from “purely earthly things and to have that vision concentrate on heavenly things, it is hard to see how He could have accomplished the (‘ransfer of interest more effectively.‘Juvenile delinquency is linked by Rabbi to delinquent society Juvenile delinquents are merely the products of a delinquent society.Rabbi Dr.Harry J.Stern of Temple Emanu-El, said here Tuesday. In an address to the Canadian Progress Club of Montreal at the Windsor Hotel he said that wholesome children came from happy homes, while juvenile delinquency tended to develop from unhappy homes.Dr.Stern said that the home, school, and the church or synagogue.played the most important roles in developing the youth. It was essential, he asserted, that parents should pour out love and, understanding to their
