While not smack-dab in midtown Montreal.we in this area nonetheless breathe a good proportion of that air what drifts in upon us {to say nothing of what we soak up when we work, shop and play in that part of the metropolis.Nothing is said about injurious gases except that these usually go hand in hand with smoke and dust. The industries of the East End.including the oil re- lineries which have been blamed for some of the malodorous pollution of air all over the metropolitan areca.are energetically studying their possible contributions to the problem. But automobiles and even heating systems are suspected of doing.their share of the damage and more than isolated action indeed, concerted community action — is indeed to reduce this menace to our urban living.a.vs Sel UE nt EE EE BY THE WAY HEN every car has its telephone and its radio, there will be enough noise in a 10-mile traffic jam (o cover a whole county, especially as a driver who has asked for a number “will be told by loudspeaker when his call is through.” It will have to be a very loud speaker to be heard above the dance music, the cackling of studio audiences, and the thousands of telephone conversations in progress. In the case of accidents, will the plea ‘I was on the phone al the time’ be allowed ?—Beachcomber r RO YOU SAY Reader disappointed at teacher tactics AN OPEN LETTER Sir: Being a member of a professional association myself plus being a member of management, I've followed the presentation of your case vs, the Protestant School Board with great interest. My initial general sympathy gradually changed to keep disappointment at your amateurish and stoppy handling of what has been and, I imagine still is.a matter of concern to you.Any of us who have been or still are under the employ of someone, must realize that whether we agree or not, it is the man who pays the monthly stipend who has the final say.If we are to disagree and with good cause, il is in our best interest to best present our case.Why.1 ask, were the Home and School associations not asked to publicly state their views? If they were asked, why was your case not ade- qualely presented to them so that their sympathy at least would be with you.In a letter from Mr.Boyd, Misses MHat- field and King to Mr.Miller of The Monitor you state “Possibly vou and your readers ., .are not aware of the following facts .” and you go on to state an instance or two.‘The fact that, for example you might receive $1,700 more annually for teaching in Sudbury or Cornwall or Fort Williar> is scuant compensation for upheaval of home and family and into an area you know little about.No.kind sir.there's more to it than that. Please dont cloud any future negotiations with a “provisional” tag to your present acceptance. Why don't you release to the public that many teachers in your associations bad broken ranks and had individually asked for contract renewals for 1960-61.At some of your own meetings, much time hus been spent in “firing up’ members who wanted to exercise their right to think for themselves.A single woman teacher who is sole supporter of an invalid mother tor instance, can ill afford possible loss of income ill - The chief difficully in dressing the dolls is their small size, Mr.Webster explained. The doll of the Sicur de Maisonneuve had (aken her 21 hours to com- picte. The doll-dressers must, she said, make their own patterns, and the intricacies of sewing the small clothing tend to make the job that more dil- ficult.Ideas for the dolls are derived from the photo or written word in history books.Interest.in the doll collection is quite intense, Mrs.Webster said.“You get to the point where everything in the house has to be nailed down ‘else it will be used in the doll-dressing.” Mrs.Webster added fictional characters from Canadian literature will also be depicted by the doll - dressing enthusiasts. The dolls, she contends will fascinate school children when they visit the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, To date the parliamentary wives have completed 39 dolls which are on display this week in Ottawa .ses with your case.T suggest you try to correct this to help you in future negotiations.D.Fenwick.(Ed.Note:—The above letter was senl to the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, the Provincial Association of Protestant Teachers, The Federation of Protestant Women Teachers, The Protestant High School Women Teachers’ Association and The Protestant Men Teachers’ Association.) High School history to ever graduate from the school were told by retiring principal R.O.B artlett school marks are still the best determining factor of the success a student will achieve. At the high school graduation exercises held last Friday in St.Matthias Church Hall, Westmount, Mr.Bartlett, in his farewell address, congratulated the students on their fine results and browsed over the traditions which had been upheld by this year’s graduating class.“Students have now reached a milestone in their lives,” he said.“Happy excitement, parental pride, carefree laughter, are shown here today after eleven years of school life.It is the close of an era in one’s life, and the beginning of another, blending knowledge and maturity with good judgment to ensure a happy and useful life.“For me,” he continued, “graduation exercises this year signify an end to a school career after 37 years in the teaching profession and 16 years as principal of Westmount High.During this time I have congratulated over 2,000 graduates, whe received certificates from this school.“Many distinguished graduates,” he stated, “laid the foundations of their careers within the walls of Westmount High School. Many students” before you have successfully met the academic challenges similar to the ones given to you. They were taught by many of the same teachers, and it is mo small henor for you to follow in their footsteps.Successful careers, Mr.Bartlett told his audience, have always been the result of determination and perseverance.School marks are still the best way to determine the success a student will achieve. In the last few years we are proud to find that in the evaluation of Grade XI, Westmount High School stands by itself, second to none.” “During the last six years,” he said, “23.5 per cent of the Grade XI students have obtained honorable standing, and 80 per cent received High School Leaving. In 1959 more than 100 entered university with 25 scholarship students among them.Westmount High School graduates have done exceedingly well, and many honors and awards have been given, “There are,” he said, “several contributing factors that bring about such success.First credit is due to the very capable teach- followed them up faithfully and well; and saw that things got done.-Good teacher relationships is yet another factor.Tasks assigned are not always easy.and sometimes both student and teacher are disappointed wilh the results. But this all leads to a growing respect, admiration and responsibility, Westmount High, he concluded, is fortunate in having so many teachers of this kind.Teachers consider it a great honor to be assigned to the staff of Weost- mount High, and many have devoted a lifetime to teaching students here.Their success is due to good students, who have met the challenges presented, who always exhibited a spirit of cooperation and made achievement possible.” Ronald Cohen, president of the Students’ Council.presented to Westmount High School a portrait of Mr.Bartlett, painted by the well- known Canadian artist, in fact, with the whole of you?You have certain bents. One of you loves machinery.I hope he will not land in a law office; he would be much happier and more useful as head of a factory.Another loves to bury his nose in a book; he picks up information as 3 magnet picks up iron filings; he is the first boy to arrive at a fire and he can hardly wait to put it on paper. You know where he should arrive—he will be editor of The Monitor some day.You all have your likes: consider how you can direct your schooling in the direction of those likes, not narrowly but with a broad base to your education, You will be doctors, lawyers, merchants, mechanics, financiers, but for every one of them school must be taken seriously.Otherwise you will have some nasty gaps to fill in.There is one profession of which we naturally think at this time of the year.Four times in the year we have special days of prayer for the Ministry of the Church, and this is one of the times.I commend to you the Ministry as a profession to be considered alongside of the doctor and lawyer and machinist, It is not as well paid a profession, but it is a most satisfying one.Of course, like St.Paul, “I magnify mine office”.I think there is no profession like it.If you are one of those undecided .boys not knowing whether to study for law or medicine, finance or machinery, it may be that there is this other profession calling you that you have not seriously considered.Shaar Hashomayim Hebrew School holds graduation The Graduation Exercises of the Class of 5720 of the Hebrew-Reli- gious School and Leaders’ Training Fellowship of Shaar Hashomayim took place in the Main Synagogue on Thursday May 26.Heading the processional of the Graduates were Rabbi Wilfred Shuchat, Spiritual Leader; game with a base clearing drive to right field for a home run.Andre Camilli pitched a fine game in spite of the fact was a little too generous with walks that kept him in trouble most of the time but some fine infield support for Jules Desjardins and Dougie Muncey cut off a few promising rallies, Bob Brault, Academy's left fielder made the fielding gem of the game when he went deep to his left to
