[" 4 renal NERC: | AML DW EN Sidelights On Current Events THE NEW CARS A FREE MAN POSSESSOR OF EARTH VALUES ARE RELATIVE GREAT PLAYERS THE NEW YEAR By BRODIE SNYDER With the new year come the new automobiles, and the excitement of choosing a first car.This is the automobile age, and the automobile is the most benefi- cient adjunct to the home.The car supplies healthful, inspiring, mind- developing emotions.Motoring gives oxygen to the body, life to the blood.And to the mind motoring gives everything.It shows us new country, new Pecple, makes us acquainted with our own “neighborhood” that now, thanks to the automobile, extends fur a hundred miles in eveiy direction.‘A man with a car has the ocean at his front door, the mountains at his back door, the lakes on one side of him, the far away country on the other, all within reach.He who owns a car is a free man, free from the law of gravitation that tied men to one spot, until the automobile came, He knows little about automobiling,, about life's real values who - says “It cost to keep up an automobile”.That isn’t the way to put it.The truth is that it costs not to have an automobile.How much would an intelligent bird want for its wings?How much would a hop-toad, kicking himself along the road in the dust of the country road, give for a pair of wings if he could get them and had the price?He would say, “Give me the wings and take all I have.” A comfortable car, big or little, with a SMALL house, is a thousand times better than a BIG louse, made uncomfortable by the the lack of a car.In a house you only change your clothes, take a bath, eat and sleep.In a car you see the world, and your family and friends see it with you.An automobile makes you the possessor of the earth, free to travel up and down in it, see it, enjoy it.All values are relative.A glass of water to à man dying of thirst means more than a glass of water to a man living with a mountain spring at his back door.A few birch at the tide of a stream mean wealth to a beaver; wealth to a lumberman means a few thousand acres of good timber.The same thing applies in sport.A hockey player goes out and scores six goals in one game; and the newspapers make a great commotion over the fact.What player is of the most worth?A team plays a one-all tie with a rival.Player Smith scores the goal.The same team wins another game 2-1 in overtime, player Smith scoring the winning goal.In another game player Jones scores six time, and his team wins 10—2.It is obvious that either one of Smith's goals were of more value that all six of Jones’.Howie Morenz is the type of player that scores at the opportune moment.Seldom does Morenz get more than a goal in any one game.but his goals come when they are needed.Nelson Stewart, although a more prolific scorer than the brilliant Cafadian centre, is of the same type—most dangerous when the going is hardest.Weiland, Boston centre; Shore, Boston defence; and Bill Cook, Ranger forward also rise to the greatest heights in the pinches.These are the players of most worth, not the ones that punch in half a dogen counters in a one-sided game, This year we commence another year.It is an opportunity to begin a new, cleaan page.Each can write on it 4s he chooses——*success”, “improvement”, “failure”, or “the same old dull routine”.Fortunate he who, despite past failure, deternines to make the new year a good one.It is not possible for any of us to do all we would like to.Heredity or environment help or hinder us, The difference between humans is as great as the difference between stage coaches and flying machines, But 4ll poasess, in more , or less degree, the power of will.No one knows.what unused quali — VOL.II, No.1 Model City INCLUDING THE DISTRICTS OF , Outremont MONTREAL, JAN UARY 4, 1930.4 The Weekly Examiner North End SERRE PRICE TWO CENTS Served “Goodies” Guests.sented a gala appearance New Year’s afternoon on the occasion of the Annual Open House Reception.From 2 o'clock, when the doors opened, a veritable stream of friends and relatives of the large membership poured through the swinging doors and were greeted by Chairman W.J.Moore and his colleagues and J.M.Graham, Executive Secretary of the branch.The.bappy throng packed the galleries and thoroughly enjoyed a hard- fought game of basketball between two fast little quintettes, then witnessed a splendid and varied gymnastic program, staged by a score or more juvenile athletes, which included everything in the athletic calendar from an exciting game of indoor hockey to fencing matches.These gifted little fellows ran through long calisthenic drills under the silent leader ship of one of their own group and their execution of the long manoeuvers was of such a manner as to ve- flc.: great credit on both themselves and their instructors.The athletic program came to a conclusion with a swimming meet in the big tank and the little matators who participated showed their elders some fancy water tricks and nice bursts of speed during the various sompetitions scheduled.The big lobby was laid with a number of tables which were burdened with loads of good things and the zrowds werc treated with Y hospitality in the form of tea, cakes and sandwiches.Those presiding over the refreshment tables were as follows: Mrs.J.A.Cullens—President of Ladies Auxiliary;
