[" The Weekly Examiner North End - Model City - Outremont VOL.2.NO.40.| TRIO FOUND GUILTY OF STEALING CAR Juggling of License Plates Solved by Local Police Alphonse Gaudreau, George Godrelli, John Capozzi and Peter Pasquale, who were arrested on September 20 by Outremont police after they had been seen driving in an automobile reported previously as being stolen, were found guilty of stealing an auto car and license plates’ or Tuesday afternoon. The plates of the stolen car, an American number, were found by Outre- moht police after.Sentence will be passed on October 7th.According to the police who testified at the trial the accused made separate confessions, each putting the blame on the other. All the accused, with the exception of Pasquale, appeared in prisoner's garb, as they are at present serving a two-month sentence in jail passed on them hy the Outremont recorder for loit- erng at night.ANNUAL COLLECTION AT CATH.CHURCHES On the first Sunday in October, by order of His Grace the Archbishop of Montreal, the annual collection in aid of the poor is taken up in all the Catholic Churches of the Archdiocese, or as soon thereafter as may be found possible by the respective pastors. The total amount contributed by the English-speaking parishes is given to the Catholic Social Service Guild, which acts as their clearinghouse, and maintains a regular bureau and trained service to investigate reported cases and seek the correct solution of the problem involved.A free employment bureau is also carried on by the Guild.Owing to the prevailing conditions of unemployment and the hardships that follow in its wake the Guild is finding the work much heavier than usual at this season, so that its always slender resources are severely tapped in an effort to relieve the most acute forms of distress.A recent appeal to the members of the Guild to report vacancies for men or women in any line of work, and, where possible, to create temporary jobs of painting, housecleaning repairs, gardening, etc., has brought good results and been the means of cheering many a discouraged breadwinner, but help on a much larger scale will be needed to meet the demands of the winter season, and it is hoped that all who are in a position to do so will bear a generous share in the efforts now being made.= + + + + + + % + BUILDING REPORT SHOWS DECREASE Building activities in Outre- mont were lower for September than during the same period last year.Permits in the amount of $125,000 were issued this year as compared to $168,600 last year.General construction activities have _also decreased for the first nine months of the year when permits were granted in the amount of $873,900, while for the same period last year $1,688,600 was expended.> +» #* + + WOMEN'S CLUB ANNUAL BRIDGE WEDNESDAY NEXT Will be Held at Mount Royal Hotel Next Week The Annual Bridge and Tea of the; Publishing Co., Limited ADVERTISING | EDITORIAL 187 0 HEAD OVFICE 015?8357 PARK AVENUE MONTREAL, OCTOBER 4, 1930.The Terrault - Crepeau Case Thousands of electors in the North End who voted for Camillien Houde last Spring in preference to an English-speaking candidate must have read with amazement the newspaper accounts of the debate at the City Hall over the resignations of Messrs.Crepeau and Terrault. While the Mayor was perhaps justly wrathful at the papers publishing the fact that he blew his ‘false teeth out of his mouth during the heated debate, nevertheless nobody will blame the reporter fof reporting the incident as it was merely the finishing touch to an afternoon of highly diverting comic- opera on the part of those who represent the populace of Canada’s biggest city. The resignations of Mr.Crepeau and Mr.Terrault have not as yet been adequately explained. The method of punishing Mr.Crepeau, for example, for his alleged part, consent, or silence, in regard to the water deal is highly puzzling to the ignorant layman.Mr.Crepeau, who got $10,000 for working hard and faithfully for the city, is “fired” by the Houde administration—but only on condition that he gets half a year’s salary as a present ($5,000) and an annual pension of $7,500.That kind of “pumishment” is hard to Laderstand. There is plenty of suggestion to the whole situation that there is more to it than has yet been! divulged.Hints dropped by some of the aldermen during the heat of the debate aroused grave doubts as to the lily-white purity of some of the elected guardians of the public's interests. The real facts of the case would possibly make interesting reading. However, even assuming that the case was as extraordinary as stated, the behaviour of the majority of the aldermen was not conductive to strengthening their case with the public.Peaches Combine With Other Fruits T'astily Peach-Orange, Peach-Pear, Peach Lemon, Peach-Pineapple and Peach ard paper to peer into the whys and wherefores of Canadian rugby, and out of the muddle of a multitude of teams sift out the ones that are apt to be sitting on top of the heap when a halt is called to the season’s hostilities. To Al T.Parsley this habit—perhaps a bad one—can be blamed.Four or five years ago he took on himself the role of prognosticator, and since then we have been picking them as we see them, irregardless of the flock of razzberries that are sure to be hurled our way.So once again we try our hand, but this time we make it short and sweet, Say we “They all repeat”.By that we line them up like this: Intercollegiate:~—Queens University.Interprovincial:—Hamilton Tigers.Intermediate Q.R.F.U.:—Westward A.A.A.Junior Q.R.F.U.:—M.A A.A, Just laugh that off. There are a lot right now that will not agree with that selection. Not at the present date at any rate, especially the third named team.In other years we have taken a fling at the Ontario Rugby Football Union, but enough’s enough, and we've decided to play in our own backyard, for they're too far from home to keep our inexpert eye on.As for the minor intercollegiate teams, they keep one buffaloed, here today, gone tomorrow, shuffled about so much that they seldom look alike in two successive games, particularly at McGill, where the seconds usually are the senior subs.No Mildew on The Tigers Yet.Picking four champions to retain their titles does not say that these clubs are faced with a set-up, Not by any means.A mighty tough season lies ahead of them.To put any one team in the Big Four ahead of the Hamilton Tigers however, looks like absolute foolishness, however, when one takes a peep into the makeup of the Dominion Champions The praises of Ernie Cox, Brian Timmis, “Pep” Leadley, Glenn Small, Alex Denman, Gear Elford, Ernie Rohmer, Cap Fear, Bert Gibb and numerous other Tiger stalwarts have been sung for a long time past, but these iron men of rugby have yet to hear their swan song.Year in and year out they have been pummeling all opposition in Canadian rugby, and one could hardly pick out a “has-been” in this lot of veterfins. Then pep them up with new blood, including Beano Wright, a football ido} in this town, his brother Inkie, Timmy Lan- guay, Ray Boadway and a few more, and you have a combination of experience and well qualified youth to defend the Dominion title, The Tigers have made mincemeat of all the opposition they have encountered from Ontario to the Pacific on their Western trip this Fall, but that does not mean a thing.Other Big Four teams probably would have done the same.Montreal again looks strong, not on their rather painful exhibition match with C.N.R.last Saturday, but with the great array of talent they have available. They have looked that way for the past two years, too, but have just fallen short of their mark. This year they present certain weaknesses that will not help the team.Quarterback looks doubtful with Bonny Haynes out of the game.“Buster” Fletcher and Wallie Sheppard are lined-up for the job, but both have yet to prove that they are equal to the occasion in Big Four battles.“Red” Moore will be a loss as well, with his aggressive backfield play, while “Huck” Welsh has not yet shown what kind of a back- fie'l player he is without the powerful defense that the Hamilton club provided for him.Toronto should again be strong, they always are, and are apt to upset a lot of dope, but Ottawa does not seem the crowd of old, and at this writing look as if they might already be counted out of the picture Queens Are Pretty Well Intact A lot of ballyhoo is coming out of Toronto this week about the strength of Varsitys team, thanks to their great work in beating Balmy Beach. They will need to be strong, for up at Kingston Harry Batstone is plodding away in a quieter manner than usual, fitting his tricolor champions for the college schedule. That Kingston team should be no slouch, for few have departed, while others have stepped up that can ably fill their places, and-make Queens an even stronger squad than they were last Fall.McGill seems the hardest hit by the Freshman rule, and it would be hard to figure them in the runming.McGill teams have been that way before however, and that is when they should be wel considered.Major Forbes has put a Jot of life into his squad, and they are apt to develop into a really smart team.} They did not show much against Westward, but to many did a lot better than expected.Give them another week or so and football fans should see a real revelation in the 1930 red team.Canadian National Present Favorites: Canadian National right now are overwhelming favorites to run away with the Intermediate Q.R.F.U.title.Perhaps they will. They got off to a whirlwind etart against Ottawa Senators and the Winged Wheelers, and looked every bit as good as both senior squads.Their line is again powerful to a degree, their downfield men deadly tacklers, and their backfield well supplied with good material.Westward have yet to do something impressive.Their ball handling was scandalous against McGill. They were penalized time and again for offside and interference, and these faults undoubtedly Yost them the game. That sort of thing can be remedied. On the other hand they were short on practice and condition, attributed to two weeks interference of the Fair. They have a real job on their hands to work into a machine that can stop Canadian National, but the Dominion champions have the material available at Royal Avenue to do the trick, and for the next few weeks they want steady concentration on practice and scrimmage— and nothing else but.Doug Kerr has a more powerful line than last season, two fine snapbucks in Art Allen and Jack Gormley, a strong kicker in Johnny Cloghesy, and possibly the smartest field general and all round player combined, in Canada, in his quarterback, Kenny Copland. That's why we give Westward a slight edge over Dave Rollo’s team, not on what the two teams have shown to date, but what they are capable of doing.Ottawa Rangers, too, might have a surprise to dpring on entering the Q.R.F.U.They grow their football players pretty tough in the Capital and its a cinch that they are not going to spend a lot of money putting a bunch of nitwits into a rough and tumble racket like the Q.R.F.U.for nothing.: The “Jotkus Juniors” Going Strong The M.AAA.juniors have already shown a trick or two in: Collegians Are Ready For Season's Opening The Loyola College Intermediate football squad will officially their grid-season tomorrow afternoon at the Loyola Campus when a representation of rugbyists attack, which will he vigorous and difficult ta thwart. The University gridders wilM be led by Ed.Barnabe, star quarterback and captain, who has already shown rare aggressiveness and versatility by leading the Bytowners to victory over the Intermediate entry from Cornwall. The remainder of the Ottawa squad will be very much the same as that which opposed Loyola last year.In last fall's tussles Loyola proved victorious but this year with Ottawa appearing with a reconditioned and more experienced team the game should prove well worth while.Coach Frank Shaughnessy was out on the Campus this afternoon giving the boys the final work-out before the tussles.About thirty five men appeared on the field and took part in the scrimmage. Some new formations have been introduced by Paul Haynes and will be tested out in reality tomorrow afternoon. The well known huddle and the 1-2-3 system, inaugurated at the College three year's ago will be the back bone of the Maroon attack during the coming schedule. The team that will oppose Ottawa to-morrow has not yet been completly chosen as there are about 4 men to every position on the field.Tim Slat- tery; pivot man and captain seems to be the only player able to count on his position as it is expected that Coach Haynes will put every one into the game in order to look over his candidates in real action. The line will prove Loyola's strong point with such men as “Slug” Sega- tore, Charlie Letourneau, Andy O”- Brien, John Tansey, and Laurie Shaughnessy supporting drawn and muscle to form one of the strongest, if not the strongest that Loyola has ever seen. The back field positions are not pro- pretty safe bet that that team will in himself, and requires a lot of watching.Bill Soden has collected a wealth of material
