of Strong and Steady Swimmers for Protection of One's Self and to Aid Others—All Local Mermen Competed. The Y.M.H.A.Swimming C ub completed its season with the finest swimming demonstration ever staged in Montreal. The programme offered by ten year old juveniles to forty year old seniors was replete with excellent form and performance. Many interesting forms of aquatic endeavor were enthusiastically received by the largest audience ever crammed into the “Y” pool.Coach Morrie Bruker out a most balanced programme that featured moving pictures thrown on a screen in the pool. This form of entertainment was both novel and offered the spectators a chance to see leading world swimmers actually on the same programme as the local swimmers were. The programme was opened hy Coach Morrie Bruker introducing the evening as one of educational rather than for compotition, importance of swimming to the boy or girl, man or woman, in which the individua! is able to assist mankind in saving life as well as being able to look after themselves in moments of aquatic danger.Swimming, because of the recent statement of the Society of Directors of Physical Education in colleges, is placed first on the physical education programme, if the physical, social, psychological, safety and recreational development is considered. The importance of such a statement from leaders in physical education should be sufficient argument for homes to send their children to the nearest pool for instruction in this form of activity. The first offering was presented by N.Oliver, M.Bercoviteh, Abe Kushner, H.Sloan.F.Aronoviteh, L.Tucker, H.Caplan, Benny Smilovitch, Irving Shapiro, Geurge Shapiro, H.Pesner, L.Caplan, Abe Ofshitzer, Sam Prisansky and Harry Smiloviteh. The presentation was called “A Study of Progressive Steps in Swimming.” Each swimmer, in turn, swam two lengths of the many many cases three or four swimmers stressing the styles and in’ were used to analyze the stroke under observation, The next group, Sydney, Steinberg, Arthur Hercovitch, Julius Kolhofsky, Joe Greenblatt, Sydney Byer, Abe Malen, Jack Wescheller, David Wangler, Max Rudick, Irving Vos- berg, Louis Lenderman, Morton Freedman, Moses Wolfson and Mervin Bercovitch demonstrated a “learn- to-Swim” lesson. These juveniles, some with the heads barely above the surface, gave an excellent performance of the work done that enabled them to pass the *Y" po- ficiency test. This group represented some seven hundred youngsters who had received similay instruction during the year. The advanced swimmers then gave an exhibition of fancy diving, lad by the association diving champion, Butch Goodman and Little Ofshitzer, practically every dive on the list was presented. Then came the life savers.Five teams of two composed of Sloan and Caplan, Oliver and Prisansky, Pes- ner and Aronovitech, Irving and George Shapiro, Kushner and Ofshitzer, demonstrated all the holds, releases and carries of Royal Life Saving Society. This group of ten swimmers are just a few of the many Bronze Medallion holders who have gained their *RLLS.S.degree in the “Y” pool. The remainder of this item was taken up with racing turns, starts, training methods and almost every trick that is necessary to make an advanced swimmer out of just an ordinary paddler. The next event was a specialty by Mr, Bruker, who demonstrated many Scientific swinming Those exhibited were, first, sculling head breast backwards, marching on the surface, propellor, tarpedo, submarine, cartwheel on surface, rolling log, outstretched somersaults, tum floating and finally cating an entire banana underwater with a spot light to catch any and all movements, movements, sculling feet
