Westmount now look for the stop-sign sticker when they enter a home.“We were first made aware of the BY Davip GOLDBERG Going to the fridge could save your life, thanks to a program which is being relaunched in Westmount by the Pharmaprix chain of stores. The Info-Stop Pointe Rouge program was onginally launched in June, 1996, but is being reintroduced in the hopes of giving seniors and others piece of mind in casc of a medical emergency.A plastic vial with a form inside is given to the participants. The form, with room for personal information as well as allergies and illnesses, 1s filled in with the help of the user's pharmacist. On the back is a place to attach the labels from the users medication.Once both sides of the form is filled out, the vial and contained form is placed in the fndge, and a red Info-Stop sticker 1s aflixed to the refrigerator door. The program presently covers about 85 per cent of the province, but Pharmaprix director of publicity and public relations Robert Westmount resident Moses Judah Hayes built luxurious hotel and theatre By PHILIP DOMBOWSKI The Westmount Historical Association’s spring lecture series got off to an auspicious start on March 19, with a talk by Annette Wolff on Moses Judah Hays.Trained as an engineer, Hays contributed to Westmount’s development when he built Metcalfe Terrace, a group of four houses erected in 1839 on Côte St.Antoine Road. Two of the original houses have survived and arc among the most prized heritage properties in Westmount.Number 168, a house Hays himself lived in for over ten ycars, 1s currently being restored by Canadian Heritage of Quebec. Most of Hays’ activitics, however, extended beyond Westmount.Among his many civic accomplish- With only the Royal Olympic Theatre on Jacques Cartier Square providing competition, the Hays Theatre rapidly assumed the role of Montreal's leading playhouse. It opened to the public on July 10, 1847 with Shakespeare's comedy ‘Much Ado About Nothing’.During the same ycar, the Séguin Company presented a series of concerts featuring the compositions of Adam, Bellini and Weber.Over the next several years, many noted performers appeared on the stage of the Hays Theatre, including, in 1850, the celebrated vocalist Anna Bishop. After providing entertainment to Montrealers for five years, the Hays Theatre came to a catastrophic end in the great fire which swept through the city on July ments were the Montreal Water Works, an undertaking which met the city’s increasing need for water. In 1836, Hays was made a judge of the Court of Special Sessions, a post which he held until 1840.Hays also gave freely of his time for Hays’ life was remarkable for the diversity of his accomplishments.9, 1852.Along with buildings hike the Hays Block, the conflagration destroyed 1,100 houses and rendered 8,000 people homeless.Total property damage was estimated to be in excess of $1 million.Reports published at the time suggested that the Hays Block might have escaped the the betterment of Montreal’s Jewish community, spearhcading the drive which gave the Sherith Israel congregation a new synagogue on Chenneville Street in 1838.In 1847, he helped found the Hebrew Philanthropic Society, the first organization of its kind in Canada.Hays’ most ambitious commercial venture was an clegant hotel and theatre on fashionable Dalhousie Square.Designed in 1847 by John Wells, the architect responsible for the Bank of Montreal on Place d’Armes, the Hays Block was a four-storey building constructed mainly of Dumscen brick imported from Scotland with a facade of sculpted stone. The front portion of the ground floor was tenanted by the Free Masons, while the back of the building housed “one of the neatest and most comfortable theatres in America.” The threc upper floors were given over to the hotel and stores.Like the earlier Theatre Royal (erected on St.Paul Street in 1825 and demolished in 1844 to make way for the Bonsecours Market) the Hays Theatre had a richly appointed interior with three galleries, loges to each side of the stage and seating for 1,500 patrons. The stage equipment, installed at a cost of $40,000, was of the highest standard and included a drop curtain with a scene of Windsor Castle painted by the Italian artist Martanni.calamity had a sccond fire not been intentionally set in a nearby stable. When the fire was finally extinguished, Montreal had lost its finest hotel and theatre.A small quantity of scenery saved from the theatre, including the famous Windsor Castle drop curtain, was purchased by Hays’ cousin Jessie Juseph and used at the new Theatre Royal on Cote Street. The curtain remained there until 1900, when it was replaced with one displaying a regatta scene. With the destruction of his hotel and theatre, Hays lost his principal source of income and had no choice but to sell his fine residence on Cote St.Antoine.His life, however, took a more fortunate turn in 1854, when he was appointed Montreal’s Chief of Police, a position he held until his death in 1861.Hays’ life was remarkable for the diversity of his accomplishments, a fact not overlooked in an obituary published in The Gazette, which referred to Hays as “a gentleman who was identified with and originated most of the great improvements which have helped the city on to its present maturity and high position.” Philip Dombowski is the archivist for the Westmount Historical Association. 4 - Thursday, April 16, 1998 The Westmount Examiner more seniors are taking up weight training these days, with reason.Studies clearly show that regular resistance training can counter the loss of muscle mass and reverse weuknessess once thought to be inevitable especially among those over 05 years of age. There are two rcasons for strength loss. The first is inevitable decline in muscle size. The second reason is the increasingly sedentary lifestyle of many older adults. This is something we have control over.Older people probably lose more strength than they necd to simply because they decrcase their activity level.Muscular weaknesses, espectally walking is a good cardiovascular workout. It’s also wonderful for weight loss. Many people have discovered that walking offers relief from stress and allows you to get away from life’s e j @ problems for a while. If you are looking to begin walking, there are several things to keep in mind. You will need a good shoe. There are many walking shoes on the market now and a running shoe will often do the job as well. When you try on the shoe walk around the store for a while to assess whether it's comfortable for you.Cushioning is especially important if you arc walking on hard surfaces such as the sidewalk.Support increases in importance if you begin walking on rougher terrain. You should always walk with your entire foot, rolling forward from your heel to your toe.As well, try to keep the shoulders relaxed so that you don't increase the tension in the neck and upper back area.If you pump your arms, you will increase the effort and the number of calories burned. If you have not exercised in a long time, or have never been especially active, don't worry. You don’t have to start at a high intensity. You simply need to move at a comfortable pace for as long as you can.The improvements will come. Some of you might have been thinking about exercise for a while now, never entirely convinced that you would enjoy it enough to stick to it.Why not try gardening?Gardening is an excellent workout which lets you enjoy the fresh air.Your tools, shovels, and soil become the equipment necessary to sculpt both your body and your yard.Raking, shovelling and other more intense tasks rinks’ solid water BY BoB OLIVER | Following our infamous Ice Storm ’98 many people, with the exception perhaps’ of some deranged individuals, aren't at all disappointed to sce the last of the ice melt away under scasonal spring temperatures. But when it comes to taking out the last of the ice from the surface of the Westmount Arena, multitudes of local hockey and skating fanatics arc never too pleased to sce it go.“Hockey's our biggest seasonal sport and we have a large number of people involved in our (hockey) program.Naturally everybody's reluctant to sce the ice go,” said Westmount Sports and Recreation department assistant chieftain Mike Deegan.“But on a positive note, we ran our winter schedule a couple of weeks longer because of the week we missed during the ice storm and the weck-and-a- half we missed at the beginning of the ycar because of the ammonia problem. And now that the nice weather is here, most people arc cager to get to the outdoor sports. So, all in all, cven if pcople arc reluctant to see (the ice) go, most of them are taking the end of the hockey season in stride.” In any cvent, like death and taxes, inevitably the arcna’s ice surface has to be removed cach spring. And beginning on Tuesday morning, rink attendants were hard at work on the opening stages of the mclt-down.By Friday, the job, and the ice, will come to a disconcerted conclusion.“It’s a big job and we nced a full crew for the removal and clean up of the rink surfaces,” said stationary cngineer and Westmount rink foreman Sonny Gavin, “We'll be at it for cight hours a day to get it all done by Friday.Scraping the ice from underneath the boards and flushing out the water is always a major undertaking.” Gavin and his staff of Terry Stubbs, Peter DeLuca, Robert White, Jim Lothian, Dave Clarke, Keith Webb, Fred Barkman and Cameron Smith, are currently manning two zambonis, icc loaders and cdgers, shovels and squeegics in their battle to meet Friday's deadline. Before that, the ammonia compressors, which arc soon to become obsolete, have to be turned on to bring the ammonia back to the compressor room so the rink surfaces will heat up and facilitate the melting process.Another huge task is the transportation of tons of snow gathered up and dumped out by the overworked zamboni machines.Once the job of de-icing the rinks 1s over, don’t expect Gavin and his crew to be taking any well-deserved sabbaticals. From the rink, they'll be heading outdoors to start on the Westmount Municipal Pool.“How long it takes to get the pool ready depends on the weather,” said Gavin. Before locals can splash around in the pool, there's the thankless undertaking of cleaning it, painting it, heating it up and preparing the chemicals to a proper level.Say what you like about dogs, but in this sports-minded town it seems boys, girls, women and men's best friend is water and ice.cer man mba as GOOD BEGINNINGS we PT r.‘Bruce Oliver ; -D.D.S.F.R.C.D.(C) EARLY It is recommended that a child first visit the family dentist between the ages of 36 and 48 months, while the child's primary (baby) teeth are erupting. At this early age, the pattern of dental eruption can be seen, and the parent can be alerted to developmental changes that might occur. This allows the child's first experiences with the dentist to be positive. This, in turn, begins to establish a good attitude toward dental care.At the first checkup, you will probably receive instructions on proper care of the teeth and advice on the importance of a proper diet.Thereafter, regular visits will be necessary to detect problems early and maintain good dental health.IMPORTANT A child's first visit to an orthodontist should take place when an orthodontic problem is first detected.Depending on the nature of the problem, whether it is a jaw growth problem, tooth problem or both, this first visit could take place as early as 5 years of age, to verify the eruption of the primary teeth.Whether or not an orthodontic problem is detected, a child should visit an orthodontist for a checkup no later than age 7.This may surprise you because orthodontic treatment usually is associated with adolescence.Although treatment will not necessarily begin a this early age, an examination is important to ensure that any problems can be assessed, and a follow-up visit at a later date may be scheduled.SPONSORED BY THE FOLLOWING NEIGHBORHOOD DENTISTS The following early warning signs may indicate that your child should have an orthodontic examination: ® * Early or late loss of baby teeth * Difficulty in chewing or biting * Mouth breathing ¢ Finger sucking or other oral habits * Crowding, misplaced or blocked-out teeth * Jaws that shift or make sounds * Speech difficulty .* Biting the cheek or into the roof of the mouth * Protruding teeth e Teeth that meet in an abnormal manner or don’t meet at ali Facial imbalance ¢ Jaws that protrude or retrude * Grinding or clenching of the teeth An orthodotic examaination is advisable any time a particular problem is noted by the parent, family dentist or child's physician.THE BENEFITS OF EARLY DIAGNOSIS An early examination allows the orthodontist to determine how and when a child's particular problem should be treated for maximum improvement, requiring the least amount of time and providing the greatest benefit.Tel.: (514) 484-3586 Petra S.Dando B.Sc,.D.D.S.Chirurgien Dentiste - Dental Surgeon Early morning, lunchtime and
