[" MAD SCIENCE BIRTHDAY PARTIES 4 Slime E + Light Shows + Cool Reactions We bring 53% science to you! SAF-SSD1 Vol.LXX 40204797 Aprons to be e debated again Sat Monday’s council meeting By WAYNE LARSEN Westmount City Council can expect a long, heated question period when it sits for its monthly meeting next Monday night, and its controversial parking apron bylaw is certain to be at the centre of debate.Attending the meeting will be groups of citizens both for and against the city’s plan to pass Bylaw 1231, which is designed to restrict parking on residential front lawns and to preserve the city’s green space.But while the past few council mectings have seen a majority of citizens come out in favour of parking aprons, there 1s a growing movement which supports the city.“We're hoping to get as many people as possible to come out on Monday and show their support for the city,” said Claremont Avenuc resident Flora-Lee Wagner, who 1s in favour of Bylaw 1231, but bclicves the city should look at parking problems on a street-by-street basis.She is currently rounding up a group of supporters, as well as urging all those in favour of the bylaw to attend the council meeting.Michacl Finkelstein of de Maisonncuve said he plans to ask council if they will be establishing a register for all those opposing the bylaw to come-and sign.“It’s up to the city now.” said Finkelstein, who, along with Joan Adye of Prince Albert Avenue, delivered a petition of signatures to City Hall last Thursday to force the city to hold a register.THE WESTMOUNT Examine, er Westmount, Que., Canada, Thursday, May 28, 1008 Tr Photo Andrew Soong Eleven-year-old Carl Aye {center} of Montreal and his fellow musicians from the Westmount Youth Orchestra entertained park-goers at Westmont Park last Saturday.The orchestra was started by 17-year-old Salim Nakhjavani two years ago and, according to president Lorne Woods, “has come a long way.” The orchestra was practicing in the park to promote their upcoming concert for Family Day in Westmount Park next Saturday, May 30.For Aye, he just enjoys playing with other musicians his age where he can “make mistakes and nobody can hear them.” By WAYNE LARSEN It was a classic case of being in the right place at the right time.A leisurely Saturday afternoon of rollerblading was capped off by an act of heroism for NDG residents Alex Freedman and Tom Sauvagcau, who happened upon a heart attack victim on de Maisonneuve between Lansdowne and Roslyn avenues.The incident occurred around 5 p.m.on May 16, when Freedman and roommate Sauvagcau came out of Westmount Park and were rollerblading home along the bike path.They spotted a group of anxious people gathered around an clderly man who had collapsed on a front lawn.“We had to stop,” said Freedman, who had been trained as a lifeguard in his native London.Ontario.“At first it looked like the guy was choking on his dentures, so | pulled them out and checked for breath.“We had no idea how long hed been laying there, and since he wasn’t breathing 1 had no choice but to give him A.R.(artificial respiration)” Freedman admitted he was a bit reluctant to apply the mouth-to- mouth procedure on a stranger, but since brain damage can occur just four minutes after the heart stops, he knew he had to act quickly.“It had been quite a while since Reluctant hero Alex Freedman he said, “but | had my training,” no choice.” After several minutes of artificial respiration the man still wasn’t C arlson AN Jas ry the ‘four - i ;
