[" Vol.LXX Few apply for apron permits By WAYNE LARSEN @ fter a four-month battle with the City of Westmount, less than a dozen residents have applied for a permit to install a parking apron on their property.“It’s been quiet,” Westmount Building and Planning director Joanne Poirier said last Fnday.“So far we have received no more than 10 permit applications.” Those still planning to apply for a permit have just over two weeks until the August 3 deadline, when the passing of Bylaw 1231 will ban any further parking aprons in Westmount.Once granted a permit, the holder has a year to complete construction.Poirier added that many other people wanting a parking apron may have been discouraged by the City’s specific guidelines, which include having enough space and not having to cut down trees to accomodate an apron.Another deterrent is the cost of a private contractor to do the work, not to mention the City’s fee to slope the sidewalk—$100.80 per square metre, or about $1,000 for the average apron—which must be paid in advance. One of the first permit applications received by Poirier’s office came from Michael Finkelstein and Susannah Prince.Citing the safety of their children, the couple had been fighting for the right to park on their front lawn ever since city council proposed the bylaw on February 2.They promptly applied for their permit two days after the June 1 council meeting, at which councillor Karin Marks announced a two-month period allowing residents to apply for permits before the August 3 deadline. On June 23 they were granted their permit and have recently chosen a contractor.“Our world has been turned around,” said a relieved Prince, who expects work to begin in front of their de Maisonneuve Boulevard home within the next few weeks.“It’s such a joy to be The Westmount ze Exäminér ©.WEEKLY Westmount, Que., Canada, Thursday, July 16, 1998 Bardfest 98 brings Shakespeare | classics to his death A 32-year-old man who apparently had a history of psychological problems leapt to his death from his apartment window last week.Police say the man jumped from his bedroom window on one of the upper floors of the Plaza Towers, at 4000 de Maisonneuve. The suicide happened at around 5:25 p.m.Investigators say the man’s head hit the corner of the building which houses the robbers getting away with large hauls in each case. One occurred between 8 a.m.and 8:45 p.m.on July 8 in an apartment @ on Kensington near Ste.Catherine.Police say there was no sign of forced entry, but that the door’s lock mechanism was slanted askew, leading them to believe the lock was picked.Missing from the apartment was a Hitachi VCR, a Sony Discman, a Yamaha speaker, a Pentax 35 mm camera and 50 CDs.Total value of the items is $1,575.Sometime between 10:30 a.m.on July 8 and 4 p.m.on July 9, someone broke into an apartment on de Maisonneuve near Wood. The 30- year-old female tenant arrived at her home to find her front door unlocked. She told police she had locked the door before leaving. The victim also discovered her two jewellery boxes, which were open and empty on her and 35 CDs.Total value of the items is $2,235.The police say the robber probably simply unlocked the front door and left.In both cases, there were no witnesses and no finger prints.en sa qualité de
