chapter in local art history BY WAYNE LARSEN The original building is long gone, but 305 Beaver Hall Hill remains one of the most notable addresses in the art history of Canada in general and Montreal in particular It was there, in 1920, that a group of local painters rented studio space in a house nestled in the shadow of St.Patrick Church in what was then the heart of Montreal’s artistic community. But over the past 80 years, the legacy left by what was informally known as the Beaver Hall Group has suffered what many consider to be the neglect of Canadian art historians; they have received nominal mention in most studies of the period but have never been the subject of a comprehensive book devoted exclusively to their Lives.Now.with the recent publication of ‘Painting Friends: The Beaver Hall Women Painters’.Westmount's Dr.Barbara Mcadowcroft has made a significant contribution toward filling that long-standing gap with what amounts to the most complete portrait of the Beaver Hall Group to date—despite.as the title suggests, concentrating exclusively on the women within its ranks and their closest associates. For the first time, the trials and tnbulations in the lives of Nora Collyer, Emily Coonan.Prudence Heward, Mabel Lockerby.Mabel May, Kathleen Morris, Lihas Torrance Newton, Sarah Robertson, Anne Savage and Ethel Seath are brought to light through Meadoweroft's extensive rescarch.“Some people were amazed that there was no book on them,” said Meadowcroft, a research fellow at Concordia University’s Simone de Beauvoir Institute who spent more than a decade piecing together her material through letters, archival documents and more than 100 mterviews with surviving family members and friends of the artists. She has written extensively about some of these women in the past, including exhibition catalogues for Anne Savage and Lilias Torrance Newton retrospectives at the downtown Walter Klinkhoff Gallery-—the venue now most commonly associated with the Beaver Hall women.Ethel Seath working at The Study.T he Beaver } Tall Women 1 amlers Barbara M cadenverafl { Dr.Meadowcroft's book, now in its second printing.By maintaining a constant focus on the interaction between cach of her subjects, Meadowcroft extends herself beyond conventional biography. She could have casily chosen to offer ten smaller.independent profiles with incidental references to the others, but by deftly interweaving cach artists activities she succeeds admirably mn capturing the essence of their collective friendship. The result is an often touching tale of camaradene and mutual support in a period when female painters faced an uphill battle in their quest for acceptance in what was still very much a male-dominated art world. And in the case of these ten women -nine of whom never married (although Anne Savage almost became Mrs.A.Y.Jackson)—theur relationships with cach other were often the only encouragement they had.Although ‘Painting Friends” 1s an engrossing biography that makes no claim to be an academic study of the artists’ work, it does offer an excellent cross-section of ther paintings.Meadoweroft admits that she had à hard time choosing images for the books 24 colour plates, but her diligence in this areca has certainly paid off. From whimsical 01] sketches to large canvases, Meadowcroft has carefully avoided reproducing most of the women’s best- known works, often in favour of less prominent paintings that have been languishing in private collections.Of the chosen few.only Prudence Heward’s masterful ‘At the Theatre’ has been previously reproduced with any consistency. Also illustrating the text are a number of faded black- and-white photographs of the women, often in suff family portraits or captured mn action with brush in hand. The obvious age of these images serve as a constant rerminder that these women were of an era long passed.and when viewed in contrast to the modern paintings they reinforce the fact that the work produced by this group was indeed ahcad of its time, be it landscape, portraiture or still life.Art historian Prof.Sandra Paikowsky of Concordia University agrees that the Beaver Hall women deserve their prominent position in local art history.“They were very important—both for Montreal and Canadian painting—because they exemplified one of the first true commitments to modernity.” Paikowsky said.“One can also look at the Group of Seven in doing that, except with the Beavers it was closer to a sense of international modernity. They also exemphfied what became very typical of Montreal from the 1930s right up to the "70s and "80s, which was the notion of the collectivity-—a group of artists working together and sometimes showing together, but also having an identity, not only for themselves but also for Montreal.” Westmount also figures prominently in the story of the Beaver Hall women, for several of them lived here at one time or another in fact Mabel May's family owned 434 Elm Ave.from the turn of the century until 1950.Ethel Scath, who was a fixture at the helm of The Study’s art program from 1917 to 1962, lived on Melville Avenue, while Nora Collyer and Kathleen Morris hived on Tupper and Windsor avenues, respectively. Many seniors who attended Baron Byng High School in therr youth will no doubt remember Anne Savage, who taught art at the school from 1922 to 1948.She was almost a Westmounter, having lived most of her life on Highland Avenue just over Westmount’s northeast border.Another near Westmounter was Mabel Lockerby, who spent her last 20 years on neighbouring Vendome Avenue. In writing ‘Pamting Friends’.Meadowcroft may have set out to tell the story of ten local women who faced adversity on many levels including the restrictions placed on them by their own soctal class but in domg so she has also succeeded un creating à vivid historical portrait of Montreal during an entirely different era, a city gencrations removed from the one we know today.Painting Friends. The Beaver Hall Women Painters” by Barbara Meadowcroft is published by Véhicule Press and is available at all major bookstores. So you weren't a victim of the Y2K bug.You didn’t want to take a plane and you did what cvery- one else did on New Years Eve: you stayed home with family and friends, you opened a bottle of champagne and wished cach other a happy millenntum? We all did the same thing, even 1f we weren't optimiste about our chances of seeing the new millennium or the next century. That is, unless you listened to our historians and decided that at's really next year that everything changes. If this is the case, we should, God willimg, be able to ask ourselves the same existential questions all over again. In his year-end column, Leo Gervais, the editor of The Westmount Examiner, offered us all best wishes for the holidays and outlined his wish list for various pcople working in our riding. For myself.Leo wished that the PQ government would trip up again in order to provide me with subjects for my bimonthly column.Well, we're barely three weeks into the year 2000 and has wish has come true.Indeed, the newspaper La Presse recently ran a headiine stating that the megalomaniac management of the SAQ (Societé des alcools du Quebec) had spent $135,000 to celebrate the opening of a new specialty store in our riding at the corner of Metcalfe and de Maisonneuve.Under the stores previous name, ‘Whiskey et Cie’, it specialized over the last few years in different types of rare spirits and brandies, such as old cognacs, single malt scotches from smaller distilleries, and eaux de vie made with almost every type of fruit imaginable. Now called ‘Signature’, the store sells old vintages and rare wines in addition to its line of spirits and brandics.Yes, $135,000 was spent to launch this new ‘appellation incontrolec’.Of this amount, $50,000 was spent on the traditional grand opening cocktail and $85,000 was used for a dinner to which 270 people were personally invited by Bernard Landry, our Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier, who 1s responsible for the SAQ.Ils not only the flu that 1s contagious at this time of the year; the SAQ president's megalomania is also catching.Bernard Landry, who has been suspected by many as having illusions of grandeur, 1s now officially contaminated. This 1s the same Bernard Landry who beat around the bush when he was questioned m the National Assembly about the construction of an $8 million museum to recount the history of alcohol.Agam in the National Assembly, this same Bernard Landry refused to recognize that the SAQ 15 a state monopoly because, he reasoned, wine 1s also sold in grocery stores in Quebec. This is the same Bernard Landry who doesn’t understand that it is not normal that in the past three ycars this crown corporation has gone from having six to 15 vice-presidents under the management of the president that he himself named. That as our Minister of Finance. As Jean Chrétien would say.“Que voulez-vous?” The winter season has harshly descended upon us, at least in the past few days, with the temperature falling below -25 Celsius.| hope that after a week like this one, winter will be over.Well, maybe not quite warm enough for getting the golf clubs out, but at least warm enough to stash away the down-filled clothing! Since it's so cold and all we want to do 1s stay indoors, that Arthur Miller classic.‘The Crucible’, at the Centaur Theatre 1s not to be missed.I Guess I NEED A BIGGER HAMMER Tron M FUNDRAISING ill 0 ñ ‘ if | | | | | | A matter of truancy To the editor: Now we all know how potentially disastrous it 1s when our children are truant from schoo, music lessons or any other responsibility conferred upon them, even 1f for no better reason than the development of their moral character and civic discipline other than of course their all-important formation for life as taxpayers. We also accept the principle of role models to inspire our young 10 greatness. But on the subject of truancy, our highest appointed role model 1s a disgrace when it comes to demonstrating honesty in government and the commitment to true leadership. The man I am referring to here is the Trudeaumania-cra nominee for senator representing the Anglo Quebec constituency, the (right or not so right) Honorable Senator “for life’ (if not for work).Mr.Michael Pitfield.À very cheap excuse 1s offered here sumilar to that other Liberal appomtee from Toronto who preferred the casy life in Mexico to even a semblance of civic responsibihty for the fat pay he collected from the Canadian taxpayers. Both clhigible for bureaucratie fat-belly pensions, indexed and all, Mr.Pitfield.like that other one who finally resigned in the face of a public outcry, we have here a truant role model with the true likeness of a Liberal sense of civic responsibility.By this | mean that it 1s legitimate tor a senator to bilk the taxpaying people for all that he can get.Yes, my fellow Westmounters, we are getting a bum ride here, and m an almost self-flagellating way we worship such outrageous truancy, it 1s indeed as pitiful as the self-flagellation we witnessed during the time of Khomenet in Iran.Now.if Mr.Pitfield was unable for whatever reason to do the job for which he was appointed with such symbolic obligations as role modeling, and sober reflections for the benefit of the tax payers while warming the scat reserved for him exclusively in the Upper Chamber.then he should put 1s honor before his greed and resign his post so that someone responsible could be elected to fill this post.As a bad suggestion, we could promote Mother Theresa Robillard to the job of doing nothing in the hope that doing nothing is less dangerous for Westmounters than being in charge of the public trough. But maybe there are some citizens out there who had their fll of truancy in public office, and maybe someone out there would like to contest the wisdom of rewarding posts to members of the Shawinigan Falls Inner Circle Cult.As to Mr.Pitfield, 1 recommend that we've had enough damage done to us, first by his being the chief architeet of the deficit philosophy of management of the public trough, but most of all for having deep-throated on the people of Quebec a constitution that not even the Quebec Liberal franchise could accept.much less the majority of Quebecers.Yes Senator, in your ability to deep throat, you of all Westmounters excel all, even President Clinton.Your truancy from the work for which you arc so handsomely paid is scandalous and it is entirely the wrong role model, with the wrong message, now that tax time is once more coming down on the taxpayers with more vengeance than ever before. So do us all a favour, Senator: resign! ® Roland Sperlich Cedar Avenue Membre - s Transcontinental The Westmount SDAYS IN LOCAL SALES CONSULTANTS PRODUCTION DISTRIBUTION En 2 Hebdo: x DISTRIBUTED ON THUR Sandra Cobrin ext 24 Innograf Monkland Transcontinental Distribution Inc hr 8 I Montréal-Quest X a m I n e r HY H3Z Harvey Aisenthal ext.25 5890 Monkland Ave.suite 12 Ad-Bag Montreal ET $ 5890 Monkland Ave.suite 12 : Janice Proctor ext 26 Montreal (Qc.) National Assembly in recess, the real political action these days 1s in the courts. The latest to test the judicial waters, and to win at least temporary satisfaction, are Mont Tremblant residents opposed to Quebec's plan to forcibly merge the ski resort town with three neighbouring towns, including St- Jovite.A Superior Court judge, ruling citizens may have been deprived of their constitutional right to self-expression, granted a temporary injunction that prevents any forced merger from going ahead.A full hearing on the issues will be held March 13.But until then, the merger remains on ice and more importantly, Municipal Affairs Minister Louise Harel will be unable to move on merger plans for the Montreal Urban Community or any of her broader municipal reforms.Meanwhile Val St.Francois residents, who challenged the government last year and won, say they are going back to court in an cffort to turn what became a hollow victory into a real one.Their anger with the government goes back to its decision to authorize Hydro Quebec to build new power lines in the Eastern Townships after the 1998 1ce storm. The authorization came through government decrees, which a judge ruled illegal. So to make legal what was illegal, the government passed Bill 42, which the citizens now hope to challenge.Hydro is also involved in another case, brought by a coalition of environmental and consumer groups. These groups, via the courts, arc trying to force Hydro, the Regie de I’Energic (set up to oversee cnergy pricing), and the government to come clean on a series of issues that affect public policy, mcluding power costs and exports. In another major case involving rights and public policy, the James Bay Cree have entered round two of a legal fight with the forest industry and the government over logging in Cree territory. And now a frustrated group of Gaspé residents, called l'Action des patriotes gaspésiens, is talking about a series of ‘spectacular’ actions, including a class action lawsuit or a trip to the International Labour Tribunal in Geneva, to protest what they call the ‘economic genocide” of the peninsula.FRIENDS ARE OKAY — Still on the politico-legal beat, Social Solidarity Minister André Boisclair has accepted the verdict of à Superior Court judge who ruled recently a 64-year old woman, suffering from multiple illnesses and confined to a wheelchair, should not be forced to repay $57,000 mm social benefits. The ruling will not be appealed and Boisclair said the ministry will review all similar cases.“| can assure recipients and organizations which defend their rights that all necessary measures have been taken so that a similar situation does not happen again,” he said.Boisclair's ministry had cold-heartedly pursued the woman because she shared her home with a 55-year old man, which welfare rules do not allow. It cut oft benefits and tried to force her to repay benefits she had already received. In reality, as the judge pointed out, the two were living in the same house for the purpos- cs of helping each other out.The man, who has a mental handicap, took care of many houschold chores which she 1s physically unable to do.In turn, she helped hum manage his personal affairs. He paid a small rent and lived in a separate room. They did not form a couple, as ministry officials had marntamed. They simply shared a modest home - two honest people, unable to perform some of life's chores on their own, trying to make a difficult life casier. In the future, Boisclair said, “the nunistry will closely study situations of mutual aid, particularly those that involve people coping with functional limitations.” LIBERAL MENU —- The Quebec Liberal Party has taken the calculated gamble that despite the souped-up rhetoric over Ottawa's referendum clarity act and the Bouchard government’s retaliatory Bill 99, Quebcecers still have no appetite to re-hash the same old stuff. As a result, its MNAs will putin an appearance at the committee debate on Bill 99, an Act respecting the exercise of the fundamental rights and prerogatives of the Quebec people and the Quebec state, but not much more.Liberal leader Jean Charest smd last week he still believes Bill 99 smells like a “grand manoeuvre” to generate sovereignty fever.Obviously, he's right. The PQ government is hoping it can restore vigour to the sover- cignty movement over the next five months, beginning with the Bloc Quebecois convention this week and culminating in the PQ's own convention in May.By the same token, Charest passes up an opportunity to show how his beliefs differ from those of the federal Liberals and how they stack up against those of the Bouchard government. He's prepared however take the risk.“It’s a question of conviction.Do we want to be of the school which promotes squabbling and division, or of a party that is open to dialogue?“We think the way of defending the interests of Quebec, to really defend them, 1s to profit from the alliances (with the other provinces) to re-start dialogue,” he said.“What is going to enter into the vocabulary 1s the concept of co-management, of co-deci- sion-making, of a federalism that will be different from what we have now, and the importance for us to build alliances with other governments. We're heading towards something very different from what we've known in the past.” E-mail: wanamakerhotmail com community member on January 16 with the
